This makes me wish Bill Nye had a science-themed ride to his own, unlike Ellen's Energy Adventure or the rollercoaster thing at DisneyQuest.
When they use brain scanners to show parts of the brain light up (due to high blood flow) who's to say that the amount, speed and quality of blood flow can't be improved? Just because that area lights up doesn't mean that we are using all of that areas density/potential, Also I'm pretty sure they are just checking areas being used (grey matter), what about the speed and rigidity at which the white matter stores and retrieves information? if this can be improved, then storing/recalling memories, attention/focus would improve, connections between the left and right hemispheres would improve abstract thinking (brainstorming for new ideas or solutions), with all these factors improved, would inevitably result in exceptional intelligence and should also be considered before neurologist's/scientists rule out the notion that only 10-20% of the brains capacity is being used.

An interesting thing to take into account is that during the 19th century scientists thought that their conclusions were completely legitimate, the best part about science is that there's always something you don't know, so perhaps the "we use all of our brain all the time" conclusion may not be correct either
I agree. I don't believe we use our brains to 100% of their capacity or else we wouldn't have savants
mbreezy223 Wrong, Savants brains are deficient in other ways. It's like rewiring a 4 wheel drive car to 2 wheel drive. It functions differently with the same power.
Interesting! I figured the 10% number came from how much of our brain was conscious vs. how much was subconscious and automatic functions.
of course we use the whole brain,it's there for a reason, but do we use it at it's full potential?
not most of us, not even some. a very small percentage of us actually unlock our full intellectual potential. consider... jersey shore, big foot and lippo suction to name a few.

Do we know how the brain's of people like Rainman (Kim Peek) work? He has the incredible ability to retain all knowledge he's exposed to and reference it on command with no struggle. He can perform very impressive mental calculations such as telling you what day of the week August 10th was in 1989. I also remember hearing about another Savant who also has incredible abilities but isn't autistic. He can multiply/divide any numbers in his head with staggering accuracy and also learned the Icelandic language in some ridiculous time frame like a week (if I remember correctly).
If the average person is actually using most of their brain all the time, what is going on in the brains of these people? If I were only aware of Kim Peek, I might assume that he has these abilities because his brain has sort of been rewired which could explain why he lacks conceptual abilities. But in the case of those that can perform similar amazing calculations, they don't seem to be lacking any other function. So what's going on?

most likely the parts taht to math and etc are bigger then all the other parts so the other parts dont work so good
herobrinext9 I didn't forget to mention that acutally. I said that there is another savant who isn't autistic, implying the first I mentioned is. Although I suppose that was a little ambiguous. The second savant I mentioned is Daniel Tammet, I don't believe he is autistic. Also, I said if I were only aware of Kim Peek I might think his brain had sort of been rewired causing him to excel in his mathematical abilities but lack conceptual abilities. maybe its not about using 10 or 100 percent of the brain. Maybe its about realizing the infinite potential of the brain/mind. ah who knows

The "potential" part vs. capacity of the brain and the10% Myth is used all the time with New Age gurus, self-help and mystical thinking for keeping this myth alive.
