The story about the grandma who tried to stab the OP reminded me of my grandma developing serious Alzheimers. It's a condition called "Sundowning." Essentially the person becomes completely disoriented, violent, and hysterical when the sun goes down. It is genuinely terrifying to witness; my grandma would try and attack my grandpa; she would shout, hit, throw things, and then wake up as if nothing happened. She would have no sense of self; she would talk about horrible things, accuse her daughters of trying to seduce my grandpa. There's nothing like it, and it's utterly blind siding the first few times you see it in person.
Happened to my mom, as well. She lived with my family and me for six years, until it got too dangerous for everyone, especially her. She's only 74. And she's been in memory care two years already. So she was only 72 when we had to place her. She was getting violent. And while sundowning, she's wander off, to the lake with the alligators. My mom is only 4'6"... It wouldn't take much to hurt or kill her. She started stripping naked and banging on neighbors doors at all hours, screaming we were trying to kill her. My sons were absolutely terrified. As an only child, I had no support. I had to place her.
I was also thinking of Sundowning Syndrome in people with dementia/Alzheimers when I heard the story. People who have it can get much, much worse later in the day, basically. The aggressive/violent behavior along with confusion and no real memory of it. I don't remember the OP telling us if she had any kind of dementia but maybe they didn't know it yet or it wasn't yet diagnosed because she wasn't nearly as bad earlier in the day. It's a very sad thing and I wish that the family would continue to see her, just during the earlier hours of the day...without letting her be alone with any one person. It seems like they don't understand.
Yeah they definitely show out sometimes....qe have a cousin like that in a nursing home, my great aunt was like that at the end of her life and my mom's bosses mother is exactly like this. You can't just completely cut them off (or I hope no one would cause that is heartless to me and they can't help it).
My mom is getting dementia, I haven’t seen any of these sundown episodes and hope I don’t, either way, I would never abandon her, I see the confusion when she forgets, it breaks my heart
@@sandiklein1906 It will depend on the stage of dementia; we were not proactive in my grandma's decline. We could have done more, but my grandpa was very reluctant and in denial about how bad it was.
Dude, 4 hours!! You rock. That exquisite heavy cream delivery and impeccable tone, timbre and rhythm is soma. I’m relaxed but then, I’m like, wait, this is unsettling!! Chef’s kiss to the best on TH-cam.
I used to feel relaxed enough to fall asleep to this actually , until I kept having nightmares about the stories I just heard. That voice still brings me back here every upload tho.
To the chick who's grandma tried to stab her- Babe, I'm no medical professional, but it's obvious to me that your grandma has dementia and thought it was years ago when she was younger and thought you were some hussy that was having an affair with her husband (your dead grandpa), and I don't doubt for one second that she had no recollection of that event so maybe don't take it so hard on her and try to get her to a doctor
It's not just dementia. My grandmother, when I was 6, accused everyone in the house, except me, of trying to kill her. She met us with a knife one day at the door. She is paranoid schizophrenic. Thankfully, she was put in a ward for a while. She got out and has been on meds ever since. She is now going to be 95 next month and she is my favorite person in the world. The same part of the brain is affected in both dementia and schizophrenia.
I mean, from the sound of it, she'd always been a pretty terrible person, even before that (the stories of child abuse from her father, her grandparents screaming at her over basically nothing when she was younger, etc.). Seems like OP already had plenty of reasons to hate her, even before the obvious signs dementia had set in. She was just a bad person in general, and having dementia doesn't change that.

Best gift I could have gotten this Christmas
Listening to this while wrapping Christmas presents 🎄🎁
The last story by far was the utmost creepiest. Author definitely did a great job with describing the tension--
2:09:00 in and I'm loving it. I'm sick with a temp of 103.1 even though my thermometer an hour later said 109.6 i thought ok something is wrong here if my temp was over 106 I'd be brain dead right? I don't know alot about temps but i do know if it's over 105 your to go to the er. So now my thermometer isnt working it's digital so I'll have to go buy a new one but not today. Today I'm all snuggled in bed sick and listening to Let's Read 4 hour video. Thank you Joel for this long video the longer the better. Your voice is so soothing I'm probably gonna drift off to sleep then wake up and listen to the rest of what i missed. The story about the guy that killed his whole family including his baby and then killed himself had me crying that story is very sad. Anyways i wish you all a merry xmas and safe travels to you all. Holidays are very depressing for me as i have noone to spend it with. Hope you all are having a wonderful sunday. Thanks again joel you rock!
I hope you feel better soon. Sorry to hear that you won't be with family and friends this year. Here's hoping you'll have a Merry Christmas anyway. May God bless you always.
