i really like the idea!! i think that because it was so diluted it didn’t come out as vibrant, maybe if you brush the blue tea on after making the paper (like a water colour base) and let it dry so that theres a higher concentration it’ll come out more vibrant/ permanent when you write on it with lemon juice :))

It was common, a long time ago , for lovers to write secret letters with lemon as ink
When the letters were received they appeared to be blank
They had to hold the letters near a candle and burn the paper a little bit to make the message come out
It would be cool to burn the paper a little bit to see clearly your lemon written secret messages~

    that sooo cool * ^ *
It might be worth to try this with red cabbage juice as a dye - it makes a nice blue as well reacts similiarly to acid like the butterfly peas.

When i was trying to make ph strips I soaked paper in red cabbage water / juice and guess what, it turned purple as it should but then when it dried the problems started. When using dye make sure to use stable ones. It smell weird, like fermented cabbage and not so nice to have stored, also its color (and pH changing properties) start to fade since UV rays (everywhere) degrade the pigment, so it looked grey and dull. I wouldn't recommend it, but if you want to try regardless, i recommend using vinegar in it since antocianinas (sorry can't recall its name in English rn) are way more stable than neutral and alkaline solutions... although you won't have a wide range of colors as you would have if using the neutral solution (acids gave you more fuchsia, red and orange hues and alkalis gave you blue and green ones, neutral can be seen in the purple natural cabbage color) and you'll have to write with basic solutions since your red paper already won't react with acids but I guess you can give it a try and tell us your conclusions if you do. Good luck!

It is much more fun as tea, with drop of lemon. It comes out dark blue and changes to purple. lovely colors. Great to add to tea. In flower form.

    Great idea!
When we were kids we wrote letters using lemon juice on a normal paper. When you heat it up it turned brown, you can use an iron or a heat gun.
It could also work with turmeric, if you add soda it turnes red and if you add vinegar/lemon I’m not sure which color but it changes, it’s chemistry, changing the PH level changes the color.
There are very cheap water brushes that you can fill with lemon/soda water or even bleach! Though it might stink 😂 thank you for yet again another great video, I love the way you experiment with everything!

while watching this video, i had an idea! I do a lot of fabric dying, with cotton as well as wool and linen, could you possibly get some aluminum acetate and add it to your pulp, but i would do some research about this, since it was just an idea in my head, I'm going to try it, and the REASON i say to do this is that a mordant ( for instance, Aluminum acetate is a mineral salt that you coat your fibers with so it can absorb more of the natural dye and will last longer on fiber) there are a lot of videos on what % of fiber to Aluminum acetate to use, also, the "after" bath for the next step would be also a bran soak for it to "stick" afterwards, cotton wants help to keep a natural dye from escaping, and this will help i think, just a thought, so it might be a thing that can be modified so your butterfly pea powder will stay put and not escape! :) btw, this plant is called clitoria ternatea and i had just recently planted the seeds because it is supposed to give a lovely color for my dying wool, cotton and other fibers :) how crazy is that!? Also it's a vining plant and i am so excited to see what it does or if it even grows in Calif! :)

If you use red cabbage juice in your pulp, I think you'll get some interesting results since this is how all-natural ph paper is made. So lemon juice would produce one color, and water and baking soda would produce a completely different color. And try other common liquids.

If I'm not mistaken I believe you are using blue butterfly pea tea flowers I use it color my papers as well it's a fantastic medium to work with and you absolutely have to use gloves because it will stain your hands depending on the concentration of the flowers, the beautiful thing about this flower is like you have shown when you add acid to it it turns purple so if you like that purple color mix the flowers with the lemon juice and then you should make a full set of purple paper morvo lavender color if you add other things like hibiscus to the mix it will turn a more pinkish red color butterfly flowers also react to certain types of metal of term kind of a blue-gray color it's an absolutely astonishing medium to work with if you also take freshly dried groundup butterflies flowers and add it to your paper after you put it on your Jekyll you can get a really beautiful dark blue smudge on the paper just adds an extra element to an already beautiful made paper. To get the blue and purple subtle paper changes I use a paintbrush and lemon juice, and because it is subtle you can make swirls hearts or other designs but you really don't get a lot of detail out of it. Dropping lemon juice on it as a lot of fun and I really enjoy working with these flowers.
And of course the more flowers use the darker the Blues.
You can buy them whole and dried. Have fun.

Nice, thanks for sharing. If you want more colour, try dyeing the paper after making it. And if it reacts to lemon juive, it should react to baking soda as well, but the other way around (the blue would turn green or yellow instead of purple). There are lots of stuff you can use to dye your papers, like hibiscus flower, beetroot or cabbage for instance. And those three react to lemon/vinegar or soda as well. Have fun ^^

Hi awesome video. If you write in lemon juice on any paper and let it dry, yes it goes invisible BUT if you want to see the lettering, heat the paper from underneath and the writing will be visible again, looking like it was written in brown ink. Brilliant videos,so exciting and interesting to see the process. Have started to try this myself. Happy New year.

I've been binging your videos since I found one of them. I'm new to papermaking, and your videos have been so helpful and informative. When I saw this, my eyes literally went big because I have been making tea with butterfly pea for a long time and I know it changes to purple/pink - I'm excited to make this too! 😄😄

I've ordered some Indigo to dye some paper with. will be too dark to write on, but not too dark to use as decor, with gold fleck, or white or metalic pens. Real indigo dyes a bright green and then when you hang it in the sun it changes to colors of light to dark blue.

  • @momentobooks
    @momentobooks 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I have a suggestion for youu. You could try to dye your paper with red cabbage or blueberries mixed with soda. It will turn your paper green. And THEN use so vinegar or lemon juice to write on it, it should turn blue/purple. Interesting.

Hi Lisa! I have a question but first of all I love your videos, and only recently I tried making my own papers because you inspired me 💙 How do you transfer the paper from the deckle to the couching sheet with ease? I use cheese cloth as couching sheet. Mine does not transfer well to the cloth, either it rips or it stays on the deckle 😕 Would love to hear your thoughts on this 💙

I was struggling with the exact same thing. First I used pantyhose for my mould, then I switched to one of those bags you use in the washing machine for clothes that you don't want damaged, but the less fine material didn't help. Tried to look up tips on the interwebs but so far nada. Do you maybe have some tips for us @nevermindlisa?
Ps I think you are a very cool bean and I'm super stocked to be living in the same country as you!

I think turmeric would be better. Turmeric is an acid base indicator, which changes colour when the solution turns acidic or basic. Turmeric contains a chemical called curcumin, which remains yellow in an acidic or neutral solution, but turns red in a base.

I really thought that you were going to use beets or purple cabbage water...bcuz vinegar helps change the colors, of those...I once dyed a tank top with Beets & had to soak & set the color with White Vinegar...
Have you ever made paper with small seeds? Like to plant the scraps of seeded papers, into the ground?

everytime i try to couch my paper, the part where i lift up from tears a bit :( i've tried increasing the amount of pulp but it only helps marginally. i've tried your thing of swiping the sponge along the edges and pushing down extra on the edge from which you'll be lifting before i actually lift. still get some tears sometimes.
any tips would be appreciated, thanks!!
