- The Supreme Court has ruled in favor of a former Pennsylvania police officer charged for his alleged participation in the U.S. Capitol attack, throwing out an obstruction charge against the alleged Jan. 6 rioter.
The 6-3 opinion came from Chief Justice John Roberts.

We do not make up the laws as we go. They are picking and sticking charges to get the most punishment they can under the law. That is not fair and equal application of the law. The supreme court got it right.

When these people were charged under a law that was created to address events in business, I wondered how they were charged with a law that has nothing to do with Government or Government proceedings. Businesses and the Federal Government are very different and are governed by different laws. For example, an employee who steals a company's proprietary technology is charged with theft. A Government worker who steals National Defense secrets is charged with espionage.

What type of message this decision is showing to the World?
That the rule of law applies and statutes mean what they say in plain text. It does not end prosecutions for people who participated, but it changes the implementation of some specific charges that some people were facing.
Clearly there’s a lot of commenters who have no interest or maybe the capabilities to just view this legal decision from a legal perspective without getting their feelings involved.

These judges were placed on the bench to serve the people. We pay their salaries full benefits, and expenses. If they don't want to honor the contract, they need to resign or be impeached.

This just means that they cannot use one particular law to prosecute these people for the broader crime, as that law was written for different purposes. Other laws can still apply, if I understand correctly.

They did dismiss the charges because the “Law” you were citing wasn’t meant to be used in such a broad manner. It was made for “Financial Crimes”. The supreme court’s ruling is correct in their decision. The prosecutors were stretched to try to make the law all encompassing. It’s not the law that should have been made.
And there will be one, with all the MAGA in Congress today, who should have been prosecuted as co-conspirators in trump's coup attempts, 4 YEARS ago!

Also put into law that anyone who gets elected into an office, is not allowed to own a business nor any close family member(s) AND that them nor any close family member is allowed to own any stocks, as well.
What we need is to remove the ability of those holding public office from being able to profit and financially profit nor be financially bribed from them holding those positions.

The language of the law clearly includes other actions. It explicitly includes other actions and supreme Court president. 4 years has been to interpret laws based on their plain language first and then look towards legislative history and then look towards other precedent. What we are seeing from this court is a willful misapplication of traditional ways of interpreting statutes to fit their own agenda.
@galinavarchena3968 I would encourage you to read the opinion if you haven't already. It was a pretty basic plain language case imo. This is something that Justice Jackson seems to be pretty adamant about in her opinions thus far in her short term on the court. I don't see anything problematic in how they broke down the language here.
