I just got another version of this car, and I'm actually having a lot of fun making a little racetrack with some jumps for it. Now I'm thinking of getting a fully proportional micro car, with a €65 budget for the car and upgrades, would you reccomend the sinohobby tr q2 or the wltoys k989 and what upgrades would you reccomend with them? (or something completely different?)
If you want a dedicated RWD touring racer then Q2 is a better choice because it's the closest thing to a Mini-Z RWD. Otherwise if you want it to do both touring and drifting then K989 is a better choice.
The mods I would suggest.
Q2 - bearing upgrade, Mini-Z main oil damper, good tyres according to the track surface. For normal room floor I suggest foam tyres.
K989 - fix the car and stock pinion and diff for spares, that's pretty much it. You can also upgrade the radio. If you don't want to change the whole board then WLtoys P33 radio is a good choice. Upgrading the tyres to foam tyres also help a lot.
Don't sink too much money into the chassis like aluminium upgrade. It's not worth it. Keep the money to upgrade it to a better chassis. If you want to upgrade, do the electronics and consumables like radio, ESC, motor, servo, wheels, tyres and differential because you can move them to a better car later on.

@@woutchauvaux6672 K989 can handle jumps so definitely go with that. You don't need to do bearing upgrade, it comes with full bearings already.

Hi Beaver, sorry this isn't really related to the video I'm commenting on, but I'm wondering if you could point me in the right direction. I'm very new to the RC scene in general looking to get my first car and after doing a ton of research I've really fallen in love with the small scale drift cars that your videos are mostly about. They look like an absolute ton of fun for something to just play around in the living room or something with. I was thinking about getting a K989 to get into the scene without spending too much money and following some of your modification videos to turn it into a drifter eventually, but I'm wondering if you'd recommend spending a bit more and just going for something like the HGD1 instead. I know the K989 requires a lot of modification to become a drift car, but the building and modding part of RC is what really pulled me to hobby and it actually sounds like fun to me.
Also, I saw from your videos you had trouble with most of the aluminum upgrades for the K989 from banggood (requiring heavy modification or some parts like the lower arms not even being usable) and I'm wondering if you've tried any other aluminum parts besides the "URUAV" ones they sell. I saw some on ebay with "Bigfoot" in the name and I'm wondering if they're better or even different at all; they may just be the same exact parts under a different name.
Anyway, thank you so much for your time. Your videos are so amazingly helpful and such a huge resource of knowledge. They've really helped me a lot while I've been looking into these "Mini-Z style" RC drift cars.
If you don't specifically want a RWD then WLtoys K969 is your best choice for a budget drifter. Just need to free up the drivetrain and the suspension and you have a sold car to slide. If you want more control, change the wheels & tyres and replace the front solid axle with one way and it'll be great.
As for RWD, it won't be cheap and lowest you can go right now is HGD1. Mini-Q is making something similar and presumably at a lower price but I don't know when will it be released. Other choices are GL Racing GLD, Atomic DRZ V2 and XRX DPA all of which are good cars but to complete them you'll need about 250-300 USD.
Beaver's Hobby Yeah, I do want RWD and I really like the GLD, but it’s hard to justify spending like nearly $350 since I don’t have a transmitter or battery+charger or anything. The HGD1 seems okay, but if I’m already going to spend that much money I feel like I might as well go straight to the higher end options. The K989/969 is seeming like the best option for now, and I might work my way up to a GLD/DRZv2/XRX eventually.

@@harriknight Starting with K989/969 for now then work your way up. My advice is don't upgrade the chassis, upgrade only the electronics, wheels and tyres where you can move to a better chassis. Get a decent radio and you can keep using it for the years to come.

I have one of these, my remote and the cart do not pair, the light keeps blinking, do you know how to synchronize?
As far as I remember this one is autobind so you just turn the car on then turn the transmitter on, move the steering or throttle and it should bind.
I just received mine today...
Very powerful motor. But the turning radius is not even. Left turn is super understeer. Right turn is perfect.
But this car cannot go on straight line.
So frustrating.
There's a trim you can adjust under the car to make it go straight.. as straight as it could. Still, it will spin out of the surface doesn't have much grip

It's 2.4GHz so it can run multiple cars at the same time as long as you turn them on one at a time. I can't confirm if 12 cars will work simultaneously though. Theoretically, they should.

Somehow these cheap cars are much more durable than the expensive ones too. Less complexity means more durability.
If I crashed into things with my GLD or even Q7 the repair cost will be more than a whole Rapid Monster as well.
@@BeaversHobby I laugh so hard at those guys at the track with expensive brushless setups that wreck anything metal of plastic on soft cushioning PP track. Kinetic energy increases so fast

No, it's not. There are no spare available and the electronics are simple.
can i use two of these at the same time? i wanna buy two for my kids, we have two rc helicopters and if we use it at the same time bouth helicopters connect to one controller
Normally yes, you can use 2 at the same time. I only got 1 so I can't test if that works but 2.4GHz on cars will work when you switch them on one at a time.

Do you think a mini 4wd body will fit, the bodies which don't cover the wheels? What is the wheelbase btw? Thx
The wheelbase is 75mm. It's a tad shorter than Mini 4WD but it'll work. Most Mini 4WD bodies are kind of flexible with that. You'll have to fashion your own body mounting system though.
@@BeaversHobby I've decided to cut the chassis in half and fuse the front part with a mini 4wd chassis and convert that into RC like others have done instead of just putting a mini 4wd body on. It'll look more 'pure'. The only thing is to get those front wheels off. Do you think it's possible?
@@Diamondbac Cut and shut is possible but don't forget to brace the chassis as well so it won't come apart in a crash.
@@BeaversHobby Hey Beaver, i've managed to convert my mini4wd into rc using this as the donor. The steering is poor as expected but at least the proportional throttle makes it driveable. I've put on one oneway wheels and cornering is much smoother and tighter. To stop, i just relase the throttle and turn. It stops like a skater. Backwards.so possible but slow. Thanks for all the info.

What is the name of the battery connector? I'd like to buy some spares. Its a great little car.
It should be JST but I'm not sure which size it is. All the batteries in this size usually have the same connector though,

You'll need to charge battery before use. Lithium batteries are always shipped with half charge to prolong the battery life while sitting on the shelf.

Sadly I charged one of the batteries up fully and put it in the car but it did not run so I will have to send it back after waiting well over its due arrival date due to the covid. All up I waited for 6 to 7 weeks for it. No dought I'll have to wait that now before I can get a refund. I can't wait to see the end of this stinking covid.

hey buddy! just finished your budget build touring car playlist. im learning a lot and i want to thank you. BTW i have a ticket to buy a cyber truck. I would be over the moon if some how you can build a "cyber truck" I myself tried building one after seeing flite test build one. now i want one that can drift. that would be so cool.
If you want it to be based on this Rapid Monster chassis then I'm afraid it's not possible. It's too imprecise and steering is not enough for drifting. However cybertyruck is just a collection of different basic shape panels so I think you can replicate the body using plastic sheets and put it on WLtoys K969/K989 for drifting.
@@BeaversHobby oh no! i would actually personally I would go "no budget build" for a drift cyber truck.. lol I would like to have one built in time for the cyber truck meets that's bound to happen. what better way to connect with strangers with a spectacle of delight. It would be the perfect ice breaker during the car meet. I also have the new red cat sixty four th-cam.com/video/Zpgp29xhx0s/w-d-xo.html since i also own a low rider. same idea there i use my rc to connect with people on the car shows and meets. some of the most memorable moments of my life come from these gatherings.
@@BeaversHobby you really think i can build a scale cybertruck just off the pictures? Ive tried building a few with foam board and i had a difficult time getting the exact vibe that the real cyber truck brings when you witness it in person.

You can pull it straight up. On the body pole there're 2 small bumps that stop the body from coming off so you can pull the body out pretty easily.

Hi Beaver, have you seen Xotek 1/32 rc? They are rwd rc cars with side rollers that are designed to run on mini 4wd tracks as well. Just wondering if you would consider doing a review on that later.
Yes, they have contacted me a while back. Unfortunately they are based in the US and shipping is a bit difficult, not to mention I don't have a Mini 4WD track with me at the moment so I didn't get it. Also $79.99 is a bit steep.

Yes, the rubber is soft. The height from the floor is around 1cm (if I remember correctly, I don't have the car anymore).

It's relatively fast. I mean it can jump off a ramp and doesn't fall flat immediately but it needs a long run up to do that.

@@WickramathungaSuvindu-zh6cx Unfortunately, it can't do backflip. It's pretty good and durable for 12YO. I'm not sure how precise the steering you need to be but this one doesn't have a precise steering. A kid can play for fun but not for learning how to drive RC properly.

It won't burn the motor but it might not fit inside the car.

Unfortunately, no. It uses the small motor like the one on micro drone/micro whoop.

Pull the body up. There's a small plastic stopper at the end of each pole so you'll have to use a bit of force to pull it out.

You can use ball heads and linkages from Orlandoo Hunter for steering and it will have better precision.

Dust is alright but not sand.

@@Ramon-bd1ii The steering mechanism has a hole that the sand can get in and stop it from working. You can keep opening it up to empty out the sand but it's quite a bother.

It's probably too big for the car but feel free to try it anyway. You'll get a lot of runtime with that.
