What I do remember from fighting the Illuminates in the first game is, unlike the bots(automatons), These guys rely on guerrilla warfare, hit and run, and ambushes. These guys are also the reason we have energy weapons and shields. Just at the end of the day. Be prepared to hear the jungle speaking in cuthulu.
Edit: please do look at some of the comments from the other HD1 veterans on other TH-cam videos. They’ll likely give insight on some things I overlooked.

Another warning for the new helldivers: The bugs just swarm you, the bots rely on firepower, but the illuminate....they are smart, strategic, and will mess with you down to your controls ,literally.
THEY WHAT???!!!! The random Strategem modifier was annoying enough now there is going to be a hole faction that just does that to your everything?
When the game community is so dedicated that one enemy faction already has a theme before they are even officially released in game. :)

Illuminate = Protoss (from Starcraft) and Covenant (from Halo). In Helldivers 1 they are like this.

We know they're coming. Once we drive the bots out of the western quadrants, we'll have a new threat on the horizon, and my money's on the squids coming back.
Don’t underestimate them. I hear tell this one faction on its own pushed all the way to Super Earth in the last war.

Thought while I listen to your music, my mind began to write a data log that my character (yeah, I know, each Helldiver is a nameless and frozen soldier) in Helldivers 2 might have when it comes to the very idea that an old foe might return...possibly.

Though, I always felt that Illuminate were ones that were on par with Super Earth back in the day...but, Super Earth "allowed" them to leave instead of wiping them out wholly...or so I'm told, many many times now from what I've read in the archives and history of Super Earth's Ministry.
In truth...the more I delve into the annals of our past, the more I find the lines blurred between the victor's justice and the vanquished's silence. The Illuminate's departure from our space might not have been an act of mercy but one of strategy-or perhaps fear. What did the Ministry know that they chose to bury in the depths of classified archives?
As I, Skull Admiral Jaxson, stand on the bridge of the SES Soul of Eternity, I can't help but wonder if our peace we fought for was ever truly just at the end of the day, or if it was just a façade to keep things in Super Earth's best interest in Managed Democracy. A precarious situation and balance that was held by the threat of mutual annihilation toward one another.
Now, with the very thought of the Illuminate's return in what my crew says at times, we are most likely faced with the ghosts of our choices we made over a century ago. Those battles and decisions of the past leaders of Super Earth, that, in the light of their menacing possible resurgence to be sure, may cast a long shadow over our so-called managed democracy.
I cannot shake this disquiet I have above the very planets we liberated up to this point, that perhaps, we were not the saviors we believed ourselves to be. We weren't in the wrong, the Illuminate had Weapons of mass destruction on their end, and they most likely would use them, given the chance. But...the Illuminate's imminent threat on that very horizon beyond the stars... I just can't help but shake this unintended reasoning in the back of my mind with what they might have become, beyond the borders of our galaxy's void. That their forces will have us confront not only the might of an old enemy...but also the specters of our own history that we long forget, and choose to forgo from enemies we conquered. What we may find on the battlefields ahead...may redefine not only our future battles but also the very core of what we fight for.
