Focusrite Clarett 8PreX | Demo and Review w/ Orlando Drummer

  • This is a demo and review of Focusrite's Clarett 8PreX. This audio interface is ideal for any drummer who's hunting for quality sounds that doesn't require taking out a second mortgage. The sounds we got out of this interface are as clean as they come, and the AIR feature certainly can play a major role in the drum sound the Clarett can produce. Enjoy, and feel free to comment with any questions! - Adam

    Yeah thanks for this @Adam Tuminaro - I'm loving this demo you did!! I have its little brother - the Focusrite Clarett 8Pre. It has slightly less bells and whistles, but still has the same great 8 mic pre-amps with the AIR feature. I'm also using the slightly cut down AKG C214 mics as my overheads. It's a fantastic setup if you don't have quite as much budget to play with, and could not be more pleased with it. It works really reliably with a Mac and Logic and I'm still using my old 2011 MacBook Pro with it. I've not thought of trying the AIR feature on cymbals/overheads - so that's a great idea!! - I only wish I had the luxury of using a C414 as a hi-hat mic though!! (Maybe one day...!)

    Great vid. With those dark cymbals they could use the fast transient response of a small diaphragm condenser to brighten them and get more air if that's what you're after. Those large diaphragms are slow.. . But it sounds great anyway

    That floor tom head is wild! So different! The mounted tom has excellent body and a round tone for it's size, looking like a 10". I can only imagine that the floor tom had rediculous depth. It's so dry sounding following the mounted tho. Crazy. Great playing btw! I went with the 18i20 and OctoDynamic, kinda wish I had got the Clarrett because now they're too close together to justify it as an upgrade. 828 when the time comes lol screw it

    Nice video! Got myself the 8pre and I absolutely love it! Did the engineer gate your ambience or overhead mic? Sound seems to disappear all of a sudden at 7:24. Other than that, great mix indeed. The only thing, I wouldn't pan the room/overhead mics that wide tho. Cheers 🔥

    Is thing basically an updated Liquid56? Kind of very similar layout, although the Liquid56 had a pair of slightly cut down Liquid channel pres and then 6 regular pres. I'm kind of looking to upgrade, but I really do love the Liquid56, but yeah firewire is a massive pain in the arse.

    Will this works/ integrate with Presonus Studio One 3.5? I have an iMac with i5 4 core processor, 8 GB ram, also could use a Mac Book Air 13" but this one has i7 only 4 GB ram. My Windows machine is too unstable to use it for recording even when more powerful than the Apple ones. I do need TWO of these connected, I noticed they only have one thunderbolt port so how I daisy chain two as I want to record my 7 piece kit using anywhere from 10 to 14 channels depending if I will mike BD in out and SN top and bottom plus room ambience? -- I started my project with a Yamaha TF1, had tons of issues, had to return, could never make it work with the DAW, tech support could not help, exchanged for a Presonus Studio Live 32, Series III, then realized this mixer stills does not work together with the Presonus Studio One 3.5 yet! as Presonus needs to update its firmware and have been promising to do so for the last year+! Now we are looking at this interface but I wonder if this will do??? and if I would be happy finally? I like the sample rates choices that you are not locked to 48Khz like with the mixers and the pres sound really clean at least from what I can hear from home using my desktop audio Logitech 5.1 speakers. Any Help is greatly appreciated. I can play some drums but obviously new to working with audio!

  • @arjan_l
    @arjan_l 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Adam Tuminaro Couldn't you add that air sound later on while mixing? (I assume the microphones themselves don't change in terms of the frequencies they record?)

    • @AdamTuminaro
      @AdamTuminaro  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Arjan I'm afraid that's not how interfaces work. The AIR feature directly affects the preamp, so it's an "all or nothing" feature. Once the audio has been recorded, those sounds don't touch the interface again, aside from basic monitoring.

  • @garderudghost6211
    @garderudghost6211 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    I have been using this interface for about a year. It is a fantastic piece of kit, but there is a downfall however. That is, no Thunderbolt 3 drivers for PC yet. For MAC users thus is a non-issue, but on PC you might get some slight audio glitching affecting the playback in certain situations.
    There has been no PC driver update for a year.
    I am not sure what is the deal here and hope Focusrite has not abandoned further driver development for PC already.
    At this moment, I would recommend also researching other options, if you do not work with a MAC.

    I really love the clarett sound! Great detail even comparing it to the Scarlett detail. I will probably upgrade to clarett! Now things I liked and disliked about the video and the mixes: I LOVE that you use a batter head mic on the kick and a resonant head mic as well and blend them together. That is something I notice less and less people doing because “EQ exists!!!” I love drummer perspective planning on the final mix and I love the compression on the kick batter and the snare. What I did not like was the gating. Now that’s a “my recording style” preference but I don’t like gating drums. I feel like if the drums are where you like them sound wise, then the mic placement can be used to record the drums exactly as they are as far as Frequency goes (like putting a monitor on the mic and moving it until it sound like the real thing.) so I feel like when I do that then I can blend the drums together and get a little more of a full but also natural sound as opposed to something more on the isolated side. Like recording a piano with 2 mics as opposed to each string having a mic and gating and planning them all from left to right. But since they are drums and the mics are in such close proximity I feel like the gate can only do so much before it starts chopping detail. So if the individual drums don’t sound to much different from each other in the DAW, then it turns more into a job of blending the volumes as opposed to trying to make each mic have its own sound. I’m not sure if I am making any sense but... I’m any case this was a fantastic video and really illustrates how well those pres work!

    • @enewhuis
      @enewhuis ปีที่แล้ว

      I feel you. I am spending a lot of time on tuning and trying NOT to muffle the drums in any way. Now this creates some challenges with some music styles but, well, me and my guitarist we have a kind of agreement. :D

    • @N617A
      @N617A ปีที่แล้ว

      @@enewhuis tuning is a great alternative. But even if you have to muffle or deaden something (like cymbals… because you can’t tune them…) it’s better to do it beforehand than to try to use post processing to “fix” it. And then at some point you gotta use gates and stuff and it just creates more problems. Also, make sure you’re selecting an appropriate mic and placing it well so that you’re capturing the most detail with the least bleed (you don’t want a cymbal showing up in the snare mic just as loud as the snare signal now…)

    So by your logic you went from a $50 preamp to roughly a $150 preamp still seems pretty low budget to me quality preamps cost $1000 bucks or more per channel on the semi pro level and way more for professional recording not bashing $150 preamps just trying to make since of what you were getting at 🤔
