I have been to this place more than 100 times since childhood and seen this structure only as a destroyed temple, never realised that this was a light house 1000 years ago. Thanks Praveen. Chennai schools have the habit of taking their pupil to Mahabalipuram as it is just 40 kms away, I have been visiting this place as a school kid 30 years ago and my last visit was just three months ago with my 7 year old twins. This place never failed to amuse me every single time. Thanks Indi for reacting to this.

@@IndiRossi there were even more temples most of the beautiful north indian temples were destroyed by invaders the invaders did not reach or i should say there was huge rebellion from hindu side until they could've reached most remote parts of South india so south Indian ancient temples still stand with glory
this is my native place, where I was born and grew up, this place is called old lighthouse only not a temple of Olakkannesvara, this lighthouse used in ancient sea transport during night time. once upon time Mamallapuram has harbour via this harbour the ancient Tamil king did their trade with other countries and also the great martial arts master Bodhidharma started his journey from here to China, and he is the tamizhan.
Praveen Mohan is a genius. What I felt in this video was that even though he knew what that structure was from the beginning he kept his video as a step by step process for us to decode one piece at a time like peeling an onion until you get to walk with him trying to decode the actual facts of this structure. This video editing was awesome. It was like watching a suspense movie. Thanks

From Wikipedia: Ravana is considered to be the biggest and favorite devotee of Lord Shiva. The Ravana whom we know by the name of Lankapati Ravana was his brother Kubera, whom he grab Lanka to become the king of Lanka himself. After becoming Lankapati, the pride of Ravana had increased even more. In such a day, Ravana was going to the Lanka, then on the way he saw Mount Kailasa. But even after millions of attempts, Ravana's plane could not climb that [[Kailasa] mountain. Just then, Ravana saw Nandi the bull. When Ravana asked for the reason of not climbing Mount Kailasa, Nandi said that this mountain is the abode of Shiva-Parvati, so no stranger can climb it. In pride, Ravana considered this as an insult and angrily tried to uproot the mountain with all his hands. Due to which that mountain started moving badly. On seeing such a situation of Parvati, Parvati got nervous and complained to Shiva. . So Shiva, who wanted to teach him a lesson placed his big toe upon kailasa which caused it to come crashing down over Ravana, Ravana's hand was pressed under the mountain, after which he groaned with pain and started apologizing. Realising the power of Shiva and out of agony he played a tune and sang a praise dedicated to Shiva, which, in time came to be known as the Shiva Tandava Stotram. Then Lord Shiva was pleased with his devotion and gave him blessings. You already heard part of this Stotram from Bahubali 1st. The 1st song when Prabas carried the Shiva lingam to the waterfall. That song is composed by Ravana Himself. You can react to the full version of *Shiva Tandav Stotram* (bahubali cover) from the channel *Agam Agarwal*

Dear Praveen, Olakanneshwara is not only in Tamil. In Kannada also Olakanneshwara word is used. Ola + Kann + eshwara. This means Inside + Eye + Eshwara. May be they are depicting the Meditation (Yoga) of Lord Shiva. So this may help you for your research.
Hey Indi.. Great video and kudos to Praveen's findings... But I feel the small towers may not be used as back-up. In fact they may be used at all times in order to give a path to the ships navigating towards the coast in such a way that the bigger flame remain in the center - between the other 2 flames. Please keep sharing reactions to such good videos. Thanks!
Just i want to tell you Indii that in our hindu Dharma Lord SHIVA God is worshipped using Rudhrakh which has 108 beads. 108 is important for hindus: “Renowned mathematicians of Vedic culture viewed 108 as a number of the wholeness of existence. This number also connects the Sun, Moon, and Earth: The average distance of the Sun and the Moon to Earth is 108 times their respective diameters.”
An ED simulation that I ran based on what Praveen suggested and the distances that I could take as a reference from other articles points out that from sea or from a distance, the flames would appear as three dots like oOo only from a 15 degree angle in front of the structure. in every other possible angle, the flames would merge and would look like a single big dot like O. I wonder if this was to provide guidance to the sailors of when to turn and sail towards the port. This is similar to how navigation lights at an air-strip work these days. Also, if ancients were able to light up fires of different colors, the color merge that would happen when the site was looked at from any other direction that the frontal approach would have been different. If that was true, its just an awesome and advanced lighthouse. I will put up the simulation rendering online if anyone is interested. It takes a huge time to render though.. pity my weak computer.
I think ollakanneswara is really ulla_kann_ eeswaran in Tamil. Ulla means inner, kann means eye and eeswaran is lord sivan. It represents the three eyes of lord Siva while ullakann is the third eye.
09:15 I couldn't help noticing the shape of the rock looks like a 'conch' - the sounds of conch and its relevance to Lord Shiva worshiping - am I the only one noticed this?
