Wonderful video! Practice 😂. I love practice! That's when I draw and paint what I want to do. Blending multiple colours is fun as well. Love the wave painting behind you. 😍
Practice is key! That’s exactly what I am doing with that wave painting!! I’m not very accustomed to using oil paint, so I’m just slapping layers on it every time I get a chance.. I may finish it one day, but for now it’s all about the practice
I loved this!! It wasn’t the answer I was looking for but the honesty hit home. Practice practice practice! Thx so much I’m inspired to explore my colors!!!
Great video! I think you've nailed the main point. So much depends on personal taste and experience, there's no short cut to just diving in and learning through practice. Of course it's also important to understand the theory ... illumination, reflectance, shadows, surface texture, all the things you mentioned, but maybe glossed over a bit too quickly. Funny ever since I was a kid I was fascinated by colour and never felt shy about experimenting with it, so my experience is different to yours, but we've come to the same conclusion through different paths.
You know, I really struggled making this video, because using colour is sooo complex, and I don’t want to bamboozle beginners into thinking its something they can’t achieve. I think the best thing about colour is the more you practice the more you see! The world gets more colourful as your eyes get more experienced at looking. But you have to start somewhere, and it’s not a scary as it seems at first!
I couldn't agree more with what you said about it doesn't matter which colors but what values. I have been sketching this past year and have been intimidated by color and have started to see for myself that it is my weak use of values that is really what I need to focus on. It is a very freeing discovery to not feel chained down to a formula!😀
I think most of us find it difficult to choose the colours for our drawings no matter what the medium. I know I find it difficult every time. I use soft pastels a lot but it's not my only medium. I use my swatches held up against the reference and decide which is the closest colour but then decide I might have to mix colours to get the right tone. It takes up some time to decide but I guess it will get easier the more you do it. :-)
Well said. Value discernment is the key, specific colours are a matter of perception, including momentary mood. Any advice on how to train one's eye to see nuances of values? All kinds of sources, e.g. books, videos are very much appreciated.
I’m a beginner in the adult colouring world & have no clue whatsoever in what colours to choose for a picture,I’ve resorted to following tutorials on TH-cam for now 😂
awww thanks! thumbs down don't bother me, they are just a part of being on TH-cam.. frankly I am surprised this video does not have a lot more, since there is no perfect answer to this question
just ran across a painting course online that the instructor said his school made him do a full year of value study before he was even allowed to pick up a paintbrush. and every other course or video tutorial or lesson has pretty much said the same thing. Value is more important than color. back to grey scale value study it is then. :(
Hi nice video! The App color pencil picker is not the best. It has bad problems with guessing darker colors! My recommendation is the App Arty and the App Color picker for Artists , both iOS! I have them all. None of them is really perfect. At the end, the best resultat is choosing colors by eyesight. Next Problem: is your Monitor calibrated? Another Problem: The Cameras.
Thankyou!!! I will pin this comment to the top so it doesn’t get lost. I am sure there are some pretty good android apps too. If anyone has recommendations feel free to list them so we can all try them out :)
Thank you for this. You are of course correct and your advice is freeing. ❤

It can be a bit scary to go in for the darker colours can’t it?
@@CassandraHanley Yes! Very scary if you are proud of something! Don't want to spoil it.
Hi
Thank you!
Loved this video, it is so pertinent to some of the questions that confront you when just beginning. It has been really informative and helpful.
Subbed because your videos are short and I'm not just looking at your hands!!!
Yes, OVERWHELMED! I'm starting to think I might be colour blind. Thank you for sharing..
Love all your advice and work
I really admire your work and I have been learned a lot of important aspects of colored pencils watching your videos. Thanks! Greetings from Brazil.

I don't see why she gets thumbs down in her videos. People are dumb. I feel like I'm listening to an art teacher.
