Bro thank you from bottom of my heart. These long conversations mixed with so much classic practical knowledge along with usage of expert lingo hits such a sweet spot. Thank you!
Thank you for the comment about “fizzy feet proble be because to much moisture” this is the first place to hear that.👍 I was about to put more holes in my tote
Glad I could help :) People always used to say "more FAE" as a standard reply. That could also be decent advice. Next time just put less water in substrate and try not to saturate it by over-misting. Most monotubs get all the FAE they need from us peeking inside throughout the day!
Wow, I looked it up and it doesn't look too dissimilar to a coffee machine. There is an old Nespresso coffee maker that actually does an excellent job at extracting with ethanol as a solvent..
Love your videos. Thank you for all your uploads. Have you had any luck with grasses or hay for grain?(don't worry about replying to my noob comment btw, I need to catch you next time your live)
Straw ships, sawdust, paper waste, etc. are usually used for bulk substrate recipes. They generally are very cellulolytic and don't have much nutrition in them. The idea behind spawn is to provide a very nutritious base (usually grain) for the fungus to grow onto larger quantities of bulk substrate. Hay, straw and sawdust would work great for growing mushrooms, but the first step is either buying or making good quality spawn. Good spawn, almost always made from some grain (wheat, rye, corn, rice, millet, etc.) is the way to become independent and self-sufficient in this hobby. It is the most difficult and also most expensive part of the process. It also tends to be the most difficult.
My bro Ed!! Thank you soo much for doing your own live streams, I’ve learned soo much more from JUST this one 5 hrs then I have from 5 months of some of the others!! I love when I think I know this or that, or that I wasn’t even thinking about in first place, and you just tell me everything I didn’t think I needed to know!! Your like a Myco Banksti!! Lol
Thank you brother. I'm glad you got some new info and thoughts. I was noticing the same trend with other streams. Kind of like the same topics over and over. Maybe mine will be the same in a couple months? LOL
Thanks for the very informative video! I wasn't part of the live stream but many people had questions that I had also wondered about! You recommended against misting and fanning because of the additional contamination risk, but do you know how valid the common wisdom of surface evaporation as a fruiting trigger is actually true? The reason I ask is because so many guides recommend misting/fanning, yet there are starting to be many reports who claim they spawned a monotub and didn't touch it until harvest - and they both appear to produce great results!
Surface evaporation is definitely a trigger for pinning. It simulates the natural conditions. Everyone's conditions are unique. It all depends on about 7-10 variables. Cultigen, substrate recipe, substrate hydration. spawn type, spawning rate, spawn hydration, substrate depth, substrate compaction, ambient temperature and rH, size of tubs, headspace above substrate (lid, dub-tub, large mono, shoebox, etc.), ambient wind, ambient light, misting/fanning regimen, external humidification, internal air circulation, external air input, CO2 concentrations, O2 concentrations, and a few more I probably forgot. So when people have very simple solutions to very complex problems, it may be a bit deceptive.
So I know that fungus don’t require light to do anything, but does too much light hurt them? For example if I was to use LED lights calibrated to grow a plant would that negatively impact the fungal life? (Other than the surface of the cake losing moisture)
I doubt that too much light would have an effect unless it's in the UV range. Mostly just a waste of electricity unless you've got plants in with it :)
Substrate question: If I make a Batch of CVG and don’t use it all at Once should I just toss it or save the rest for making More cakes? I was careful to keep my bucket lid on and only used sanitized gloved hands to touch it.
I toss them when they start to look dirty. They cost like $0.25 here. Usually about every 2-3 weeks. The pads fully absorb the water, so it is 'standing' water as some people think.
Some people are allergic to search engines aren't they! Appreciate you starting to dismiss the high level questions like "is tap water ok?", "how do I spawn a tub", "how long can grain sit?" etc etc. Not to poo-poo newcomers but it's really not helpful when people who require spoon-fed information on the basic tenets of growing our babies dominate the questions being posed in chat. And can people please stop taking everything Yoshi and Microppose and Willie and any of those other basement capitalists are espousing as gospel... they're trying to make money off you by selling you their products and garnering your interest, they are not there to support your own self-sufficiency in the way Dr. Grand is. As always Dr. Grand your time and no-bullshit approach to sharing knowledge is deeply appreciated, looking forward to some more streams with more questions around breeding and ethics! Nga mihi, Jake Pettigrew from Aotearoa/New Zealand
I'm definitely gonna have to skip some of the questions as more people join the chat. Unless I have something new to say, I'll just skip the Google-able questions. It'll take a while to get past some of the deceit and lies that have long-held dominance in this emerging hobby. People seem to love their idols and tribalism. some people will never get over that. At least I'll give them another option. Thanks for participating.
Dr Grand has a plethora of pre-recorded videos addressing all of the simple questions and concepts of basic home mycology - it is evident that people are not watching these videos before coming to ask very basal questions in the livestream and that detracts from the experience for others who are here to go deeper with Dr Grand's knowledge of breeding and taxonomy. If people actually watched his videos, they wouldn't be asking the simple questions on live stream because Dr Grand has answered them time and again.
@jacobmillen641 He's the best! Sorry i didnt realize what you meant! I've been watching videos by him daily. Asked minimal questions haha and I sure do have a lot of stupid questions I wish I could ask haha. S
I spawned in a shoe box and the first flush there's like Hella pins and I got 5 full sized fruits do you think it's be fine to harvest all the pins to get rid of them for a fresh start on the second flush
I would try to remove as many aborts from the first flush as possible. Some people leave them. I think it just looks nicer to remove them and make room for new babies.
@@edwardgrand Is there a way to clearly distinguish between an abort and a pin that just hasn't grown yet? Recently I saw someboody harvest a tub, and upon discovering a large number of small side pins (about the size of an abort), he broke the block up and arranged the pieces so that the previous sidewalls were facing up. The side pins, which looked similar to typical aborts, then grew into full sized mushrooms. Perhaps what we think of as aborts might be more fairly considered pins that have the potential to be full sized mushrooms once conditions allow for it. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the subject!
Aborts will not start growing again, regardless of the new conditions. What you saw is quite normal to do, but you have to recognize it before pins become aborts. It is a very delicate balancing act as you can see from my other answer on your comment.
I just want to say that you have taught me more in a month than i learned the first 4 months of this hobby. Began 3.16.23 I wish i had your other channels on discord etc to join. Lmk if that's a possibility. Thanks Ed
I might get a Discord someday, but there are so many already. So many people starting the hobby. It's great to see, but there is too much bad info sometimes.
@edwardgrand Yeah, definitely! There's a lot of misinformation, and at times, it has been very confusing learning. Luckily, a little extra resolve and probing have helped me a lot. A video about SAB techniques by you would be so useful. Although I know you have a beautiful laminar full hood and that may be something we might not get to see. Again, thank you so much for all you do! A breathe of fresh air
Also there is a lot of SAB slander going around lol. You can be very sucessful in a SAB. Ive noticed a huge increase in everyone saying just get a flow hood. For some thats not obtainable. You can be just as successful with a SAB.
SAB's are easier to hide and replace also. I totally agree that you can be very successful in a SAB. If I had the room, money and a choice, I'd lean towards getting a FFU. Just makes work easier and faster.
Imho people who trash SABs are probably trying to sell you a flow hood. There are many people on Shroomery who have been at it for years with the same plastic box with holes. I followed a DIY filter (publicized by 'Whitebeard') design using two non-hepa home depot air filters, and so many people came out of the woodworks to say that I was just going to contaminate everything.
@@vincentwu2848There is nothing wrong with SABs. Hoods just make the work easier and faster. I built various kinds of SABs and hoods in the past. The commercially available hoods are worth it when you decide to stay in this hobby.

Thanks once again brother. When everyone is trying to make a buck you're giving us everything for free. Mush love.

Levo machines will also tincture with alcohol. There are several video out there showing how to use alcohol in the Levo.
