I'm a retired Submarine Sailor. When we were in port, especially ports in Florida, and over seas, If you are careless and spill or discharge Sanitary Tanks (Black Tanks "BIG ones") on the land, in the water or on the pier, they can charge the Navy and the Ship hundreds of thousands of dollars to clean it up. My Commanding Officer was very paranoid about that topic and met with each duty section of the day and STRESSED the importance of proper supervision, proper line ups, proper prerevolution briefs and proper communications during the evolution. We had to have people manning the discharge hose stationed every 20 feet with communication devices. Love the channel. I'm VERY NEW to my Dynamax DX3 Super C diesel. The learning curve is VERTICAL! LOL! Your topic lessons are SPOT ON and I really appreciate them. THANK YOU for serving brother!

As a Truck Driver with 2M miles I have tried all the commercial truck gps navigation devices... Garmin is by far the best...
That said in NJ by the coast you have Industrial and cottage areas next to each other... At the time I was testing the 3 major brands. Each directed my Semi down a cottage Rd. (I was sure all 3 wouldn't fubar me.) But, sure enough I came to a Y. 1st choice was one of those 10' bridges 2nd was further down another cottage road. (Remember my Semi is about 75 ft long!) So, I trusted all 3 wouldn't misguide me... But, an 1/8+ mile farther another 10' bridge. So, I tried using someone's wide driveway. (I can back a 53' Trailer into a slot with only 10" on either side) But, no matter what tricks I used, I couldn't do it... Mean while I had some @#$&@# laying on their horns the whole time! So, I got down from the cab and ask very kindly if one of them would guide me so I didn't take out the beautiful brick wall. I was told to FO... So I asked them to back up so I could pull straight. So I could back up the 1/8+ mile. To which more FO. I very kindly informed them either they move or very bad things were going to happen. So, I backed the rig up to the Y where performed a 15 point turn (with the fine person laying on the horn the whole way!)
In other words... We have a Rand McNally Motor Carriers’ Road Atlas with very specific road limitations. Get one and it only takes a few minutes to use it, if you don't want to go through what I experienced...
PS, If you Come across your neighbor with the $350k auto and very loud horn. Please thank them for their behavior...

In PA we have a non commercial class A and B for RVs over 26kl lbs or a truck and trailer when the trailer is over 10k lbs and the combination is over 26k lbs (same as a class A and B CDL. Very few of our driver's centers know of these and only a few can even do the test for them... So most don't have the proper license. As for insurance the towed vehicle is covered under the towing vehicle's insurance but only for liability, not the damages to it. So you would need a separate plan to include repairs. For not much more money a year I carry a full liability and damage coverage for our 5th wheel.
One thing also to think about, when talking of your taxes and tax breaks... If you are traveling and making money that very well can make you a commercial vehicle (depending on the amount you make while traveling) and may open you up to USDOT requirements including DOT#, log books, weight station and possibly CDL licensing.

In my small town in Michigan the city ordinance says you cannot park your rv or trailer in your drive for more than 24 hours. Back when I was first starting I had my little pop up in the drive to wash and load it, and the next morning, before we left, they were there to ticket it!

You missed one legal issue and its open alcohol container state laws, especially while driving a motorhome. For many states if open alcohol container is found anywhere in the coach you can be ticketed. The best place to keep the open alcohol container is in the basement of the motorhome. I remember this was discuss a few years ago in some RV circles.

In Wisconsin if the RV is under 45ft In length you do not need a CDL, if over 45ft then you need a Class B CDL. As far as weight goes the state highways are 80,000lbs and some of the county highways and back roads are Class B roads which are 48,000 lbs. During the spring thaw there will be temporary weight limits that very by county. Although I don't own a RV, I'm a retired truck driver and still have my Class A CDL so I can still drive anything out here. My feeling is that if you're going to buy an RV that weighs say 30-50,000 lbs it would be a good idea to take a course to drive a large vehicle, they react differently in the snow and on mountain downgrades.

Great Video and great advice on firearms. Massachusetts is tough. To carry you need a Massachusetts License To Carry (LTC), but I’m not sure what the requirements are if you just have it LOCKED in your RV while camping for a short time in the state. Also Mass does not require a specialized license to drive a Motorhome. Lastly, we always had insurance on our Travel Trailer. It was just peace of mind.

    California
A motorhome with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 14,001 pounds or more, even if registered out of state, would need to undergo a "Clean Truck Check" emissions test in California, as it falls under the state's regulations for heavy-duty vehicles requiring emission compliance checks due to its weight; this includes both in-state and out-of-state vehicles operating on California roads.
Some port of entries are giving you notifications that you have 3 days to get it smogged or get out of the state.

Driver License : In Quebec, Canada, no need for special driver license
Registered : yes and proof of insurance for the car towing
    Garmin : the best
Taxes : Don't pay any and no write off.
Safety and towing : very very similar
Rv living Laws and Fire arms : We are full time and being in Quebec, Canada 6 months and 6 USA so Canada is pretty easy except for Fire arms.
But always search on the government sites and get the info USA or Canada 🙂

In IL, a travel trailer must be registered with its own plate. You don't need insurance because the liability coverage of the tow vehicle typically covers any damage caused by the trailer in an accident. However, because we initially had a loan, we needed insurance for the trailer. We still have insurance for the trailer. It's only $300 a year. We do get tornadoes and hail in IL.

Very good video with important topics, MJ and Izzy, thank you for this! The first time I drove a Class A diesel pusher was at a dealer here in Florida. I had no experience, no idea about air brakes, etc. The salesman had me drive onto a major interstate highway, and this was close to Thanksgiving, traffic was horrible! First time I hit the brakes I nearly put everyone through the windshield! I "grew" into it with experience, but it still amazes me that at least some training isn't required with perhaps some sort of specific licensing rider or qualifier. I'm sure this isn't the case because the RV industry has probably lobbied against it. I understand the difference between commercial and recreational vehicles, but still, driving a 55,000 lb. vehicle on a highway with other vehicular traffic does pose some challenges and potential dangers, especially for those lacking experience.

In IL, I believe tow dollies have to be registered and have a license on them if they are being hauled empty. However, if they are always used with a car on them, then no registration or license is required. Also a word of caution, if you carry towing insurance on your towing vehicle, but do not carry insurance on your towed trailer, some insurance companies will not cover the cost of a wrecker for the trailer should you experience a flat or something more severe.

We went to Canada this summer. Went thru Emerson/Pembina (ND). Both times, we offered the border officials our registration and insurance for tow vehicle and trailer. Both times, they said they didn't need to see it. All they looked at was our passports. I even gave them my dogs vet annual(shots) and they handed it right back. FYI, supposedly August 1, newer more strict pet laws were supposed to go into effect. Proof of shots, chip, and an online form filled out prior to crossing the border.

And when a tree fell on our camper in storage, our insurance covered the full value with no hassles, even though the value went up due to Covid. Sounds good that they paid off more than we paid for the rig until you realize the replacement rig was also more expensive. We did not make money on this, maybe lost some, but it was open and fair to all involved.

Informative video. I can speak to international travel into Canada.
Recently, US CDC implemented new requirements for traveling with Dogs requiring the animal to be Chipped and a online registration completed (and receipt of completion) presented at the border when returning back to the US with the animal.
Be careful being fresh fruit/vegetables/meats across the border either direction.
It's recommended to carry a Canadian Proof of Insurance card (can be obtained from your US Auto Insurance company) since it meets the guidelines of insurance in Canada.
And it goes without saying, don't try to cross the border with a handgun and certain knives, the former will land you in handcuffs and the latter will be confiscated. Certain Long guns can be transported to Alaska with appropriate forms completed prior to crossing.
One more item - Drugs... Make sure you have any prescription meds in their original bottles with prescribing info and in terms of Marijuana, even if it's legal in the State your leaving and it's legal in Canada, crossing the border is NOT! You'll end up in handcuffs again.

Some states may not require towable insurance but certain parks may require proof of insurance on your trailer. Thousand trails requires that trailers have insurance to stay at their parks. The information on firearms law for each state is readily available online. The laws vary widely. Some states are constitutional carry states. No permit is required to carry a firearm. Others require a permit to carry a firearm. There are other laws that also apply. Investigate each states laws before traveling there. A membership to an organization like US concealed carry association is not a bad idea. In the event you get into a situation they provide legal help.

In Pennsylvania, a “Non-Commercial Class B” driver's license is required to operate a motor home with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more. But be beware that some employees at your local DMV office may not be aware of this. When applying for the Non-Commercial Class B license at the DMV office in Dublin, I was initially advised that my “Class C” license was all that was required to drive an RV. Upon advising the officer of the Non-Commercial Class B license, he left the window to confer with his supervisor and upon returning a couple of minutes later stated “That’s new to me, but you’re correct, a non-commercial class B is required to drive your RV”. Do your own research. If you Google “states with a Non-Commercial Class B requirement”, you’ll find a complete list of all states with license requirements for vehicles over 26,000 pounds.

Most traffic will be going faster but then they learn hard about frost bumps that can launch them if they are going to fast. It's a beautiful drive but very long, especially from NJ. :😀

CDL Class B for single vehicle over 26,000 lbs, CDL Class A required for multiple vehicles with combined weight over 26,000 lbs. Although they call it a CDL, It’s really Non Commercial.

There are RV driving schools all across the US. If you happen to be a member Og FMCA (now called FRVA) and attend any of the International rallies, there’s one company that teaches it 4 days prior to the rally. I’m going to the one that’s in Perry, GA in March. Just search “RV driving school “ and results will show up. Hope this helps, since nobody else has chimed in.

I have a legitimate question for you guys. As far as I know the condition of your vehicle (modifications) goes by the laws in your registered state. If I install modifications (underglow, LED light bars, horns, lift kits, exhaust, ect) on my vehicle, either motorhome or tow vehicle, and they are in compliance with my home state where my registration is does that trump the regulations of whatever state I may currently be in? If your truck is too high for NJ but legal in texas, where its registered, can you get a ticket for it in NJ?

Once again, I started a semi-rant on the last point, then blew it away. 8( My advice, keep any/all firearms hidden, out of view. That goes for friends/family/and foe. Licensed/unlicensed. They are used in life/death situations only, and by owner/spouse only. How to decide? A quick thought, "what would a jury of my peers think", only if time allows! Life/death NOW, nothing matters but our survival.!! I could talk hours around over regulation/under regulation. On to #1, that is a pandora's box also. The last time I did a rant here on that, I answered questions for 8 to 10 months after that!! So let me think, and get back on the rest. Maybe 1 topic at a time, we'll see. Maybe Izzy and MJ have a suggestion? In the mean time, take care and Peace. --gary

In Ohio, Article 1, section 1 and U.S. Constitution 5th and 14th Amendment, private property is held inviolate. License and registration is only required for commercial PERSONS or person-al property meaning corporations and individuals performing duties for those corporations. Ohio General Assembly created a federal legislative jurisdiction called the state of Ohio codified in O.R.C 1.59 G and H. Ohio has 3 branches of government, state of "the' or "this" state of OHIO is subject to the Act of Congress, in the case, O.R.C. 45 is subject to U.S.C. 49 pursuant to Article 1, section 8, clause 3 "COMMERCE. Any contract with a commercial entity is joinder....citation, registration etc. If, as a free people, the state of whatever makes demands like licensing and registration, start asking the question, how did we give our secured rights away....by contracts? Live free.........With that said, we must be 1st lien holder and true owner evidenced by all our paperwork being perfected, we live with a paper system. Enjoy the adventure

Here in NC ANY AUTO , TRAILER,travel trailer, motorcycle, motorhome anything on the road has to have a license tag an be registered an pay taxes on EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING. And anything that is financed you have to have insurance on anything you are still paying on . Well as far as that goes we have two different insurance types for anything that is raged for the road . We have liability insurance an collision insurance if you finish paying off your vehicle you can drop your collision insurance but if you are in a accident an it is your fault the insurance will not pay. Also as far as a special driving license for Motor homes you do not have to have ANYTHING but just a regular car driver license. If you have a travel trailer the same but the weight limit is covered by what ever your truck is licensed for. So if you have say 8000 lb. License tags on your pickup truck that means your truck camper an EVERYTHING IN the truck and camper can not way over 8000 pounds an that includes PEOPLE, pets . EVERYTHING!!!!!. So if you put fresh water in your tank so if needed to have a place to use the bathroom. DO NOT PUT A LOT OF WATER IN YOUR TANK IF NOT NEEDED .
