This made my day!! I think he is saying, be patient, you will feel fine without it if you are patient. I can personally tell you I lost 50 lbs, got into better shape, have more energy at work, and I can think more clearly.. I don't think many people can do those things and drink 10+ a night, which I did. You just get used to functioning sub-par when you are sober, and eventually, completely out of it, when you are drinking. Thats what happened to me at least, of course not everyone drinks to a few ticks before black out like I did, but, even two a night takes away sleep quality and sharpness the next day..

When you really find out is when you stop drinking. If they aren't supportive or worse try to get you to drink then they defenatly aren't what I would consider a friend. I had people in my life like that and I do still talk to them but I'm not close to them because they just aren't supportive. The choice is yours. Good luck.

I am Irish. I'm 31 years old. I gave up alcohol when i was 24 years old after suffering from debilitating Anxiety and Panic Attacks. Growing up in Dublin all Young people do is drink. Starting around age 16 they drink huge amounts of alcohol. Why would they do any different? They see their parents and friends drinking. By the time they are in their mid 20s they are so used to drinking it's hard to give up.
Life is better without alcohol. I've attracted a beautiful wife and a great lifestyle and also moved to Paris. It's crazy the culture change in regards to alcohol i see Parisians drink a glass of wine or 3-4 beers. I've rarely seen a drunk perisian. In Ireland people just get trashed pissed drunk to the point they can't even remember what happened.
Anyways those who are struggling with alcoholism I'm sending you love and strength to give it up and become healthier and happier and attract more beautiful things into your life. You deserve it.

I married into an expatriate Irish-Catholic family across the pond. The father drank a lot, abused the children, and the mother thought it was "normal" because of her Irish upbringing. Needless to say, my marriage ended because my husband followed his father's example and drank. The wee child that came of our marriage has vehemently sworn off drink. Her father has since passed (two months after receiving his 2nd Moderna vax this year), and she is learning more about French culture after three years of studying the language in high school. I wish I could say I lost weight when I quit drinking but I actually gained. Probably because I used to replace food with beer, and when I stopped drinking I developed a sugar habit. I did finally level out after a couple years and I'm back to an average weight. Being sober is so freeing. I feel like I have nothing to hide and nothing to worry about. The financial boost is great as well. Of course when I was under the age of 30 all my drinks were free... Lol.. but as I reached my late thirties I realized this was going to cost me some money. Good time to quit.

I'm at 301 days now. Every morning I wake up and write the number on the dry erase board on my refrigerator. I see it, my family sees it. Just a number, a "score". It's a motivating thing for me. How embarrassing or disappointing it would be to erase that number and start over at "1" again tomorrow.
At first, I thought that time is the only way to judge my success in sobriety, but now I think it's best just to say "Drinking is something I don't do anymore." But keeping track of the days is a good way to motivate you to get through today without drinking, at least at the beginning.

After experimenting with hard drugs in my late teens/early 20’s, it got to the point where every time I got really drunk, I’d be like a fiend looking for cocaine or ecstasy or anything else. The thing was, I wouldn’t drink all the time and I’d go months without using hard drugs sometimes so I thought everything was fine. Fast forward a few years and I find myself using heroin and cocaine daily and anything else I could get my hands on.

I'd like to point out an important nuance for those watching this video especially if they currently drink and are thinking about cutting down or stopping:
There are two distinct flavours of boredom that can be generated depending on what kind of drinker you used to be. Their existential characteristics are quite different.
One kind, which is the more often emphasised here, is the product of having sacrificed a stimulating lifestyle that appeared to rely on drinking or other drugs to continue. This is the realm of partying and all the thrills and spills that go with it. People who have given up this kind of social or engine drinking will often come to have unrealistic expectations of their sobriety because they are hoping it will fill the void left by a lifestyle they have abandoned.
Since in and of itself sobriety is unable to fill such a void as it is not strictly a lifestyle, a kind of inverse evaluation emerges in which one reminds themself of alcohol's drawbacks that they are no longer subject to (the morning after, the regret etc).
This kind of boredom or angst can be difficult to redress because it revolves around the axiom that you are in fact missing out on something, it's just that thing isn't worth paying the price for. Some addicts within this domain may pursue other extreme lifestyles as a way of compensating for their perceived loss.
The other kind of boredom is the one that I have experienced and is less bittersweet. It is a genuine boredom, not brought on by lack of stimulation but by lack of purpose. It exists because alcohol has hollowed out your life and left a cavernous altar with only itself at the centre.
Here, alcoholism is an all encompassing belief structure like buddhism, hinduism or nihilism. And now, by miracle, dumb luck or sheer determination, you have broken free of the toxic dogma. The paralytic idol has crumbled to dust and left you feeling lighter, more aware. In this state, the assertion that everything is better with alcohol seems as absurd to you as the assertion that God is in everything seems to an atheist.
All you know now is that your obsession has melted everything else away and left only you, the present, and the future. This is a beautiful boredom; it is an invitation from the universe to start living your life.
    Have fun with it!

I used to consistently show up to work hungover, tired, sleep deprived, etc. etc., until finally I had enough and decided to grow up. I love waking up ready to take on the day. I am a lot more productive at work and that entails fatter checks!

Thank you so much for this. I have had a similar experience with alcohol. I always get to the point where I binge/black out & it’s dangerous. I’ve quit for short spurts before but it always creeps back into my life and bad things happen. I had another bad night last night and I’m just horrified that I let it happen again. I’ve sugar coated my issue with alcohol for years, but finally admitted to myself that I have a problem. And I’m not someone who can just have an occasional drink. I can go months where I don’t overdo it, but eventually I always always get back to this point. A night of black out, getting sick, feeling shame. I’m vowing to make this change in my life. I don’t want to be a slave to this poison anymore.

Fellow "Timothy" here. I'm 56 and haven't had a drink in 33 years. I went the treatment/AA route, but I certainly don't insist that it's the only way for everyone. What DOES have to happen is to get totally honest with oneself, about everything. I still struggle with anxiety and depression sometimes, but that's just par for the course. I accept it. Life can either be difficult or impossible. I'll take difficult any day of the week.

@Aprende Billar I was like that for several years until I finally broke free of the cycle. It was really hard, especially the first few weeks when I had physical withdrawls and a very strong "urge" to drink. One thing that helped me was keeping a cup filled with a mix of water and gatorade. Mixing the ingredients and sipping on it satisfied that habit of making and sipping on an alcoholic drink. It helped reduce the anxiety, and got me hydrated. Good luck to you. One last thing, depending on how much alcohol you drink in a day, you may need to slowly ramp down your intake before quitting entirely (I had to do this). Alcohol withdrawl can be fatal. It is always recommended to do it with medical guidance, but that has all kinds of bad stigma associated with it and in many cases backfires for a number of reasons. It can be done on your own like I did, but just be careful

When I announced my new choice, my buddy from childhood told me, "You'll never make it without going to AA." I scoffed at that notion and NEVER attended a meeting . I think you're the first person I've ever heard talk about this! Thank you! ❤️ My bestie of 30+ years struggles with drinking. She was sober for over a year once, and the being bored part was SUPER HARD for her! We were together all the time, and it usually involved drinking. So when she decided to get sober, I started doing non-alcohol-related things like showing up at her house with fancy snacks and a ridiculous '80s Richard Simmons workout video, because I knew we would laugh our asses off doing it. And we'd go outside and blow bubbles into the street for all of the passers by, which made us both feel so good. She rediscovered her love for baking and went to school to get her pastry and baking certificate. It's definitely a transition. And people need to KNOW that it'll take time, but that they will have fun again! Thank you for talking about this! ❤️

How does sobriety (from alcohol) benefit society as a whole? The only way I can see it being of benefit is that it would decrease the number of people who drive under the influence. As long as people who drink (or use other substances) don't drive while intoxicated, then they're not harming society, they are only harming themselves.
Edit: Actually, I thought of one more thing besides decreasing driving under the influence, and that is decreasing public urination and other inappropriate public displays. Anyone who has been to Manhattan knows that public urination is a definite issue there. There are way too many bars and liquor stores and not enough public bathrooms.

@@skiddybipbop6844 You make a lot of good points. It can be tricky to correlate how much the consumption of alcohol/other substances affects the productivity of a society. For example, the United States and Japan are both major consumers of alcohol and yet both American and Japanese citizens are consistently ranked as taking the lowest number of vacation days per year compared to other developed nations. I wonder which comes first, the chicken or the egg? Is widespread alcohol/substance consumption responsible for a large number of problems in society? Or are a large number of problems in society responsible for widespread alcohol/substance consumption? It's personally easier for me to make a case for the latter. I'm doubtful that we would see many drastic changes in society if more people starting practicing sobriety. I think the problems that lead people to drink in the first place would still exist, and I imagine most people would simply seek new forms of escapism to replace the alcohol. (As a side note, I'll add that I don't think alcohol benefits society either. I'm mainly questioning what in society would change/improve if alcohol consumption decreased.)

this is important stuff. When you're still drinking, you aren't able to internalize the fact that you will feel better after you have quit long enough. You have to "just trust" that your physical & mental health will dramatically improve and you'll feel great, and that's hard to do. You have thoughts like "well, HOW much better will I feel? And how soon? Can I get an exact number of days?" But, after you've gotten your health and well-being back on track enough, those ways of thinking quietly fall away and they're gone and replaced by a more accurate picture of reality and more positive mindframe before you even know it has happened. Hope that makes sense! Great video!

@@dylskyh4439 each of us is different. I was a "weekend warrior" who didn't touch a drop during the work week, then got knock-an-elephant-out life-debilitatingly drunk on Friday evening/night--at home, alone --and spent the absolute entire weekend nursing the hangover (they last 2 days instead of just one when you reach a certain age, haha). But, I had had HAD to have that one weekly drunkenness session. I felt like I couldn't get through the rest of the week--really, ultimately, couldn't get through *life*--without knowing I had the Friday Night Blowout to look forward to. I think that regardless of the time frames of the drinking, it simply is going to be about getting over that hump; you feel like you're summoning up all the strength you have and the feeling of uncertainty that it will pay off is what makes it such a difficult hump. But, you can get over it. You can totally do it, man! In my opinion, it probably should not take years or even a year to get your brain and body into a noticeably better place (like some might scare you into believing). More like a couple/few months, or maybe even weeks is probably closer to the common reality, it just feels like longer... though, again, everyone is different. If you are consciously going in the direction of improving your life in general, like health, fitness, mental health, etc., that helps a lot (in fact, I have a bit of trouble seeing the point in quitting drinking just to quit drinking. You quit because you want a better life, right?) Good luck brother!

I’ve been sober going on 3 years. I honestly have zero desire to start again. Since I’m a musician my focus turned to music. Going headlong into my music was more satisfying to me than drinking. That combined with confronting my inner demons and ptsd made me a better person and a much better musician. My ability as a drummer suffered as a result of my drinking. Once I was sober long enough to have a clear head I realized just how much a better drummer I am as a sober musician. I’m definitely not bored, my life is WAY more exciting now. Best of luck to all of you. 🙏🏼

Stick with it, it's really the perfect drug other than perhaps the cognitive impairments it might cause, but that isn't a problem for most people.

But in the sense of "How useless are you if you can't have fun or even bother trying to enjoy youself without using alcohol? You're disabled, with your ability to have fun crippled. It's sad. And pathetic."

This is the best f**n sober video I've ever seen. Dude just gives it to us straight.
One thing drinking does is it numbs physical and emotional pain. And that might hit you HARD. Like a semi. Seek therapy if you need help and support during this, because you sometimes need to learn how to cope with LIFE again, without a substance.
And trust me, life that's more even-keel without super highs and super lows, DOES feel great. I didn't think I could be this happy when I stopped drinking. But after a month or so, I really did feel energized and happy, just like I thought I felt when I was drinking.
