    The thing that stood out for me when I had my first Amiga (a 500) is that you had had a multitasking GUI operating system (Workbench 1.3) that booted from a single 1.44M floppy disk.

    • @heidirichter
      @heidirichter 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      880KB, not 1.44MB floppy. Amiga 500 used double density, not high density drives. So Workbench 1.3 fitted on a single 880KB disk with almost half the capacity of a 1.44MB high density floppy...

    The Amiga was very underrated it's nearest competitor in capabilities back then was not an IBM or Mac but the early work stations like Sun 3s.

  • @Patchuchan

    Actually the Amiga generally was much cheaper then an equivalent PC or Mac from the same era.
    The problem was Commodore's marketing department did not fully appreciate what they had and how far ahead of it's time it was.
    The Amiga got marketed mostly as a game machine when in fact it was the first multimedia computer.
    The OS even had preemptive multitasking when the Macs only had cooperative multitasking and most PCs were still running DOS.

    Amigas were amazing, they really messed up in the 90s. If they had run Win 3.1 and then Win 95 they would still be with us

      The Amiga OS was far superior to win3.1 why would they cripple themselves? I use to have an Amiga 500 and could run any mac software as well on it. Amigas biggest problem is it was ahead of its time.

    • @oldtwinsna8347
      @oldtwinsna8347 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      well, you could have a bridgeboard and run win 3.1 I had the 386 bridgeboard and it ended up running so well that I eventually just got a dedicated 486 winbox since I discovered the amiga software was just too limited and unrefined compared to windows offerings. the Amiga just became distasteful to use. Software mattered a heck of a whole lot. esp during the early 90s when the Internet became mainstream, the Amiga really lacked quality apps. PC hardware then became so cheap and powerful while Amiga prices rose with dated technology. Once the first generation 3D cards came out on the PC, the Amiga became a relic.

    I was so convinced at the time that the Amiga was the future.

    • @LUCKO2022
      @LUCKO2022 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It was. No one wanted to see it and Apple along with Microsoft made it that way by locking up the education and business markets so they had no chance of succeeding.
      We are only getting caught up in the last decade to what the Commodore Amiga was doing in the late 1980's and early 1990's. The Amiga was doing video editing, music creation, photo editing all the way back starting in 1985. That stuff never became popular until very recently in the early to mid 2000's with things like youtube, my space, twitch, photoshop. If the Amiga came out now it would blow away the competition no question about it.

      Jack Tramiel's unsustainable, unscrupulous methods and ultimate poor judgment caused the death and the remains to be burned of both Atari and Commodore. If someone like Jobs or Yahauchi had purchased those companies they would have had a fighting chance.

      Jack had left Commodore well prior to Amiga. It was Irving Gould who destroyed Commodore and there was nothing anyone, including Jack, who could have done anything about it as he was the majority shareholder with an iron fisted grip on the company.

    I dunno, my computer runs pretty damn fine.
    Intel i5 running at 3.2 GHz
    16 GB of Corsair Vengence RAM clocked at 1333MHz
    GigaByte Radeon 7770 HD GHz edition Superclocked
    All running on an Asus P8H67-MLX MotherBoard.
    Haven't had a problem with it since I built it. Computers are still getting better, the companies are just becoming more greedy with what they put in their own systems. That's why you build your own computer. Make it as good as you want. Then you can upgrade later. Worth every penny

    One thing that they are letting aside nowadays is the heat production and power drain. Sure those Atoms run cool, and phone CPUs too, with lots of more processing power.
    But: go back in time, and tell a i386 user to use a CPU cooler, he'll ask you why. Those didn't even use a heatsink, and nowadays CPUs that drain 65w are normal, 35w on a laptop is not uncommon.

    This is ART! With only 8Mhz, the 68000, along a very well-done kernel, runs multi-tasking! Nowadays, you can buy a $2 micro-controller, the ATMEGA8, for example, with RISC instruction set, runs at 16Mhz!
    But the awesome software by Amiga outdoes the crappy stuff we have nowadays, e.g., Microsoft!!!!! Things run like crap with GBs of RAM and GigaHertz CPUs!
    The ART of computing has been lost!

    I have had the privilege to own the A1000, A500, A2000HD and A1200. I keep the A2000HD and A1200 alive and from time to time I will turn them on to bring on some fond memories but of late I have been using mostly WinUAE because both my units I know will have to have their capacitors changed out. I keep them because they are old friends and my only hope is that when I pass my children will have the same appreciation for them particularly my son who use to beat the hell out of the A500 back in the day.

    Desktop publishing? Home productivity? MS-DOs/Intel compatible? Business machine? Creativity device? Game system? The Amiga was capable of all of these things, but confused with its versatility. It was so good, Commodore wasn't quite sure to how to market it. They sort of hoped it would sell itself. Also, they expected the Commodore 64 to have more sales longevity.

    • @oldtwinsna8347
      @oldtwinsna8347 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    software nowdays are a "bit" more complex... also you should not forget that OS-es of today have to handle wide variery of hardware... not just a specific machine. that makes coding software that requires less hardware a bit hard.
    also if you qq about your windows 7 running slow, you should update that 10 years old hardware...

    Its difficult to understand how Commodore fucked up the Amiga. The Amiga was loved by people and had the potential of an Apple Macintosh.

    • @DesperationmixtapeOrg
      @DesperationmixtapeOrg 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      i think software was the problem for amiga. and perception. it was perceived as a game machine. and it never had killer applications that became standards in the industry (like cubase on atari/mac). amiga came later than ibm, dos and mac. as atari st it tried to start a new standard (files, app, hw) but the world already went in other direction. and commodore was indeed a small company from engineering point of view. there were none of the original amiga engineers in commodore staff in 1987 as amiga was a project commodore bought from another company. commodore failed to develop to its full potential also

    • @bajan13ken
      @bajan13ken 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      They fucked up the Commodore 64 as well... from "more popular computer ever" to "killed off in its prime" rather than made into a totally household name.

    • @sluggotg
      @sluggotg 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      ***** "Had the Potential of an Apple Macintosh" ???? The Amiga was a Fully Pre-emptive Multitasking computer in 1985. The Macintosh did not achive that until 2000+ The Amiga had 4096 colors.. The Mac had "Black and White... Both Colors" at that time. The Mac was roughly $3500 at that time. (it included 9 glorious inches of Black and White Monitor). The Amiga was around $1200 with a 13 color monitor. The 4 Channel Stereo Sound Blew all the completion away! I don't understand how you believe the Amiga "Was almost a Wanna Be Mac".I agree that Irving Gould absolutely Screwed Commodore! But the Amiga was vastly superior to the Mac in the Mid to late 80's. Sluggo

    • @DesperationmixtapeOrg
      @DesperationmixtapeOrg 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      sluggotg but hardware is everything. and the hardware of amiga didn't evolve much between 1985 and the demise of commodore. because modifying the hw meant to break compatibility with applications (so competitions slowly reached the amiga). also in 1985 the amigaos really sucked (it was really buggy). The amiga was a neat machine but all the feature it had made it good for a game machine not for a business machine. Mac in 1984 was not successful despite the hype. it costed a lot, no sw, low memory. but apple worked in different way than commodore differentiating markets and applications while commodore had 8 bit still in 1990 and the amiga but without the original creators. It was the company quality and structure that made the difference. Today the mac is an excellent environment. i agree with you, the amiga was really superior in terms of hardware.

    • @Mintcar923
      @Mintcar923 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +desperation mixtape Not true because Amiga had a multitasking system very much like Windows before anyone ever heard of that.. If only they had made the right business decisions Commodore would have taken over the market completely as the C64 was the most popular and successful computer of the 80's..
