Revolution: the Video Toaster and the Amiga computer (Part 1)

  • The original VHS videotape demo from NewTek, released to promote the Video Toaster card for the Amiga computer. Lots of nostalgic references for every Amiga user, from the "sexy" Kiki Stockhammer to the Babylon 5 Lightwave renderings. First part from 1991.
    My Christmas present for all those Amigamaniacs still around the world (are you there guys?).
    And at last a tribute to the Amiga, the best home computer ever made (and to the Toaster card too).

    In 1991 my father bought a Video Toaster system. I was 15 years old at the time and began using Lightwave 3D. I learned that system in and out and we began producing video work for many clients. This lead to an early internship with a major TV network which kick started my career in broadcast design. Today I’m an art director for a major sports network and if it wasn’t for the Video Toaster, perhaps my life might be very different today. This video takes me back to a very special time when I was hungry for broadcast design knowledge and fascinated by the power of the Amiga computer that sat in my room for many years. Thank you for posting.

    In the 90's i acquired the Amiga 4000, Video Toaster, and Flyer card. I ran a computer graphics/video business out of the basement of a video store. It was fun and i loved Lightwave 3D.

      6:25 - “I can start up my own production company” - “yeah, you can” I’m buying one to implement this old school style into new content. All content on social media and online is over saturated with the same garbage content, that everybody copies each other from. No originality or artistic touch. This video roaster tech is something gods dream of 👀

    That's some 90's greatness right there. Started using a Toaster in college and now I produce videos for a gaming TH-cam channel. Amazing how far we've come since '91 - and it'll be amazing to see where we go in another 17 years.

    I remember a friend of the family talking about how the Mac was the Premier Video Editing Computer... because the Mac had this "New Thing Called the Video Toaster"... Newtek released an Amiga 2000, (with some upgrades), and an Appletalk card and a Video Toaster Card installed. This allowed a Mac to interface with an Amiga with the Toaster... The Mac Fans Cheered about how the Mac invented Desktop Video Editing. My Brother Inlaw, (extreeme Mac guy back then), Called me and informed me how the Mac now allowes us to edit Video on a Desktop.... he said " APPLE has INVENTED THIS NEW THING CALLED A VIDEO TOASTER.... IT ALLOWS MACS TO EDIT VIDEO"... Obviously he was your standard confused MAC owner... The "Video Toaster" he was commenting about was in fact an Amiga 2000 with a video Toaster installed... they put a sticker over the Amiga 2000 logo that said... "Video Toaster". I told my brother Inlaw to pull up the sticker over the Amiga 2000 logo... He was not amused.. we never had another Amiga VS MAC debate....

    Wow, we still have two pristine, fully functional DPS Perception Animation Recorders complete with Daughter capture cards, utilizing Lightwave 3D on Windows NT machines, purchased at the time when Lightwave took center-stage and before DPS tech was sold off to leitch. I'm thinking of offering a PAR video-conversion service for anyone who might still have old .PVR and .PVD files and no way to convert them. For the sentimental archivalist. I might still have my Toaster 4000 pack-ratted away somewhere. Thanks for the blast from the past :)

    This was the holy grail of video editing if you were working in public access television. Better funded stations only could afford one. I worked with one back in '92 and '93. Most people only used a fraction of the capabilities seen here.

    My dad used to work for Newtek way back, but during the recession in the 2000's they had to lay a lot of people off, my dad being one of them, but he's always been friends with the guys who founded it. He would let me play with a tricaster with a few cameras plugged in when I was younger and I thought it was the coolest thing ever.

      It's for linear video editing, i.e. you still need an A/B editor and TBCs to sync the sources. The Video Toaster Flyer upgrade that came out later was a fully non-linear editing system, more similar to what people use today.

    Hey guys... a non related comment. Back in the day.. a company came out with the "Emplant" board for the Amiga. Its first function was to allow the Amiga to run Mac Software.. by putting Mac ROMS in the board. The board was designed to support many, many OS's. The 16mhz Amiga Computer... absolutely Trounced the 25mhz Mac on Mac software benchmarks. The response was so intense.... that Apple told any dealership... they would be eliminated if they sold any Mac ROMS to Amiga Owners... You young people may not know the importance of this... The Amiga.. Emulating the Mac.. was clocked at only 16mhz.. the Real Mac was 25mhz... That was a HUGE difference in clock speed.. but the Amiga Trounced the Mac... even with the speed difference... The Mac never recovered.. they always lied about performance since then!

    • @MrRoboto1963
      @MrRoboto1963 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I remember that board, and how the silly brainwashed mac fanatics cried

    • @wirelessmikedj7784
      @wirelessmikedj7784 ปีที่แล้ว

      I started in IT back then working on Macs and still doing Video on an Amiga. I worked at a local PBS station that had an Alpha Toaster card and I was asked to integrate it into their video production system. I had my own Amiga 2000 at home as well as that was my computer of choice. I had this Emplant board and I also had Mac II ROMS from a defunct and broken Mac II. I signed up to be a beta tester. This card was amazing and highly accurate in it's "emulation", but it really was a Mac system on a card. The Amiga platform was truly ahead of it's time.

      This is not a demo program so you can't expect to have Amiga's four channel sound output. This audio is part of the Video Toaster VHS demo tape. The video digitizer took only the left channel linear track (not even the Hi-Fi track). This is VHS, don't expect miracles my friend :)
