    I’ll keep adding updates to the description as we get more information. I did edit the title to remove outdated information that was incorrectly reported by the news the first two days (that the ship collided with an unknown object, it has been confirmed as a massive hull failure)

    @SwampDog-w8i หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Given the age of the ship, the possible deterioration of the hull metal would account for the severity of the damage . However , it doesn't explain the "how" of what happened to cause this fracture .
    That said , even a thirteen foot crack in the hull is repairable . Look at the patch in the starboard bow of the Saginaw .
    I spent ten years working in a shipyard , and we made several repairs to boats with hull damage .
    Michipicoten can still have several years of productive service . But, it is up to the owners now .

    • @jonathanellsworth21
      @jonathanellsworth21  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Perhaps, but think about how big the lake is, and where they sail. Probably unusual that current would take a huge tree out to the center of the lake. It would more likely go out a bit, then get swept back in the next seiche. And consider the effect ice has on hulls, doesn’t take a whole lot to punch a hole if the ship is going at speed, and it’s not too different density wise from wood

      However I’m fairly hopeful, this sort of thing isn’t as uncommon as you’d think, the only factor that sets this particular incident apart is the apparent size of hole and the fact that it nearly capsized the ship.
      That said if it was caused by aging hull plating falling apart when it shouldn’t have, then it would be a much larger issue that would affect the whole ship. In that case, maybe she won’t sail again. Impossible to say for certain at this point

      @@davidcampbell1899 perhaps, but Great Lakes shipyards can work wonders. Many of these ships have been cut apart, gutted, and put back together multiple times now. If she’s salvageable, they’ll get her safe again. If she can’t be then they won’t let her sail.

      @@RobertSwickard-o1w I'm a navy veteran. Three of my cousins sailed the Lake Boats for a few decades.. The eldest one was working the Lakes when the Edmond Fitzgerald went down and also when Lightfoot wrote that and he, a professional mariner REALLY liked that song and considered it to be an homage to his mates.
      No disrespect is there.
      Lightfoot's song is hardly a "one hit wonder"
      Now that, is disrespectful and not at all knowledgeable.

      Highly likely a hull failure after divers inspected her. Thirteen feet long, and news reports seem to indicate the crew heard a bang during the voyage, which would indicate a brittle fracture (thankfully one that didn't extend very far, relative to other incidents I know).
