You can thank Disney for not getting a sequel as Alita is a much better character than the MCU's Captain Marvel. The House of Mouse always gets what it wants, and it wants Alita dead.
@Ricardo Alonso Rojas this movie is not big hit because at the time production happened, it's under FOX. After they finished shooting, Disney bought FOX. Disney focused on captain Marvel and Avengers endgame causing this movie has lackluster reception. Recently, Disney announced they want to made prequel live action focus on latest running of manga, problem is they want to make Alita as Disney princess
@@secondghost I was hoping we'd get an Alita vid withut turning it into an anti-CM thing, but I guess that's impossible. Alita isn't getting sequel, unfortunately, simply because it failed to make profit. One reason is that so much of the "word of mouth" advocacy for the film was the anti-CM narrative, which turned potential viewers off. People aren't swayed to watch a film by bashing a different one. If the word of mouth advocacy for Alita had been just on Alita's own merits, rather than been more about anti-CM, then more people would've been persuaded to see it, it would've made profit, and we would've gotten a sequel.
Everything was also decaying. In the manga, most people were pretty dumb and there didn't seem to be much education. So, technology was largely stagnant and the capacity to produce things was winding down. Perhaps "Zalem" and what was beyond could help, but they didn't have the interest.
I want a sequel to this. A really underrated movie. Also she didn't give him her heart, just hooked him up to her to keep him alive till she gets to Dr Ido.
The big eyes is not because is based on manga, but because she was built to fight in the Moon or Mars and there are not recieve as light as the Earth. So the big eyes is to percieve more light than here. If she had eyes like humans there, she would see darker.
This is a rationalization for the big eyes; it is logical and makes sense, but is not the reason. Manga characters have big eyes. James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez wanted a faithful adaptation of Alita to the manga, which they did a very good job.
@@bbwng54 also the reason they wanted to hold true to the manga is the manga author said many times that alita's doll like appearance was intentional. He wanted her appearance to contrast with her fighting ability.
@@bbwng54 that's not the reason because even in the manga Alita and her kind have much bigger eyes than the other characters that live on Earth. a lot of people are mislead by her big eyes being associated with the fact that she's a character from anime/manga. but the opening comment is likely right on the money about her eyes. Either that or it's something about Martians having bigger eyes. Either way, it has more to do with her being a different species. not because of the source material her design was taken from. because even that source material has the same differences.
This movie is based on a long-running manga series called Battle Angel Alita, or GunnM in Japan. It is an extremely smart and fascinating series and I have loved it for over 20 years. There may never be a sequel to this movie, (although I really hope so!) but I would HIGHLY recommend the manga if you'd like to know more! Also, Nova (his full name is Desty Nova), is basically immortal. He is an unbelievably brilliant scientist who has effectively mastered nanotechnology. Which means that if he's ever injured or killed, nanomachines in his body just immediately rebuild him, exactly the way he was. They even prevent him from aging.
@@cassidywest5539 Nova is most definitely bad. He has conducted horrific experiments on thousands of innocent people, including his own son. He doesn't care how many people are tortured and killed in the pursuit of his mad science. Although he's not evil in a traditional supervillain sort of way. He's just completely amoral. He doesn't want to rule the world or anything like that. He simply wants to do his science and that is literally the only thing that matters to him. He doesn't even really value his own life because he knows that if he's ever killed, his nanomachines will just rebuild him and he'll just keep right on going.
@@shawnlopez2317 The OVA was so damn awesome though. I wish they made more like a full series that follows closer to the manga. They could still do it if a studio was willing to re-visit the series!!
We hope we get a second movie, since it didnt make good in box office is unlikely, but is a very good movie and very underrated, It doesnt get the love this movie deserves and Alita is such a great, strong, powerful and incredible hero. This is how you adapt anime/manga material. James Cameron tried to make this movie for more than a decade and since he is directing the Avatar movies he asked Robert Rodriguez (The Spy Kids movies) to direct it... And he did an amazing job.
Completely agree. You must be an Alita fan like me, since you know the background. Have you checked out the channel of "Jaya Nice Day? He has > 130 videos on the Alita universe starting in 2016 (before the movie) and discussed mayny interesting topics .
@@patinho5589 Yeah, but its future was still grim. The production cost alone was 150-160 million, it barely made a profit (estimated break-even point was around 375 million).
Alita is a cyborg. Cyborgs are humans with robotic (or "cybernetic") parts Androids are robots that look like humans or have human-like qualities They're not the same, for future reference 😇
@@scottperry8354 that is the reason, all martians have "big eyes", whereas all "earthians" have "small eyes", lol we only get to see Berserker Alita's "big eyes" and (briefly) Berserker Gelda's "big eyes", as the other URM Berserkers got their helmets on in the flashback scenes Alita is literally a martian alien* on planet earth, lol *alien as in not native to earth (she was born on mars and lived on mars for 300 years) *she's fully human, but humanity has colonized the solar system, and over "much" time, they've adapted/evolved to each of their planets, humans on some planets barely look human at all any more (mars didn't cause much change, only gave them their "big eyes"), and then you also got all of the cyberization as well too, lol
I love everything cyberpunk, but what I love the most about movies like Alita and The Fifth Element is that they have the guts to break from the traditional sewer-steam and neon light palette, and actually show these cityscapes in the daytime. Something about those worn, rusted, and heavily polluted earth tones, contrasted with shiny steel and high-technology.
The manga is still going on to this day. _Alita Battle Angel: Mars Chronicle Volume 7_ is the latest one. Best movie of 2019, with _Joker_ and _Ford V Ferrari._
@@mangalegends If you didn't know or forgot, before the _Mars Chronicle_ series, there's the _Last Order_ series. Both adds so much to the original story, while being very different in story and time span.

Chiren is Jennifer Connely, she played the lead in "Labyrinth" as a kid. Watch it, it's fun. Alita's fighting style is actually Kung-Fu, they call it by an alien name, but it is really Chinese... Sorry dear Duaffy, the production will not film Alita 2, because of money issues... I am angry about it. Alita is based on manga (Japanese comics). Hugo's name is really Yugo... There are many more manga books. They filmed about half.
Agree. James Cameron had planned a trilogy to capture all of the manga books. He wanted to make this movie over 15+ years ago but was "sidetracked" with Avatar. He is now contracted with Disney to make at least 4 or more Avatar sequels
Just wanted to say this. A sequel is probably coming in a few years. In december 2021, Cameron and Rodriguez said that they’re still very interested in a sequel. It’s not Cameron that does the directing. I’m sure ge finds bits of time to work on a screenplay.
I absolutely love this movie, one of my favorites. So thank you for reacting to this gem. Alita wins your heart immediately. Unfortunately there's still no sequel on the horizon, yet. Fans started a petition for it and even flew a plane with a banner behind it over the Oscars ceremony. But Disney won't listen.
At the time Disney was trying to bury Alita to spruik for another movie they did themselves, so Alita became the hated step-daughter since 20th Century Fox's acquisition.
Utopia is you get all the tech and people learn to live together in harmony, dystopia is when you get all the tech but greed prevails giving the masses misery. Got to say though I love reactors that don't have English as a first language, "he has something dirty inside him" that kind of thing is adorable. Another one I saw was reacting to something where a girl was going to blow up a bunch of people and the reactor kept saying "oh she's going to blow them, oh she's going to blow them" absolute accidental comedy gold. And great work Duaffy you're editing is getting better and better whether you brought someone in or are doing it yourself, magnifico.
With the whole heart and Hugo thing, Chiren just hooked him up the the heart while it was still inside her, to give him a way to survive until Alita could get the head to Ido where he could hook the head up to a new body. Hence why you could see the pipes from his neck running into her. As an aside, James Cameron wrote the screenplay from this and based it fairly closely on the first 4 books of the original "Battle Angel: Alita" manga. While there are a few changes from the original version, it does stick closely in a lot of places, especially with some of the iconic images (like her putting her arm through Grewishka's eye). It was a project James Cameron wanted to make for many years (since 1995), but felt technology hadn't come far enough to do it well, so he put it aside and made Avatar. With the success that had, he no longer had the time (due to working on the Avatar sequels), but managed to get the budget for someone else to direct it. It didn't do as well in the box office as it deserved, but did fairly well on home release. The hope from fans is that if Avatar 2 does well, Disney (who now own 20th Century Pictures) will give him the budget for a sequel.
Respectfully, it's more like just the first two volumes with a little bit of MotorBall forced in early. I think they just couldn't wait to for a sequel with how cool MotorBall is :) You can also tell that they took a lot from the Anime OVA in terms of some story structure, especially with the introduction of Chiren whom was an original character from the OVAs and not from the manga.
True. I've not read as much of the original as I'd like, but it did strike me that Cameron clearly a fan of the source and wanted to make that, rather than someone who just wanted an IP and so butchered it.
@@EhrineAshbark The original author Kishiro very much approved Cameron's changes, he said giving Ido an ex-wife added a bit of astringency to his character, and motorball as shown in the movie was the coolest thing he had ever seen. That said, any change would have a "butterfly effect" on what is to come, in the unlikely event that further film installments are to be made, this butterfly effect might snowball along the way, making it increasingly difficult to craft satisfactory scripts further down the line.
Fingers crossed but I don't see it happening. I just wish Cameron had chosen this instead of Avatar and we might have had a trilogy directed by him right now. But I can't blame the man for choosing a personal project above an adaptation of someone else's material.
@@sntxrrr Cameron said, at the time, imaging technology was not good enough to tell the Alita story properly, as state-of-the-art then, was Jar Jar Binks. "Avatar" was a learning exercise and stepping stone, because they had to push technology beyond Jar Jar Binks, and the shortcomings would still be acceptable because we do not know what that alien world was meant to look like, so they could get away with a lot. With technology had progressed far enough beyond "Avatar", Cameron said it's the right time to make "Alita", set in a world that we can visually relate to.

Best Hollywood Live Action movie based on an Anime there ever was. Coincidentally of course also best Hollywood Live Action movie based on a Manga there ever was.
Actually the real reason her eyes are so big is because Rodriguez wanted to make her look like the Manga animation this is based on. I don't believe I recall seeing an explanation in the movie.

It was a mistake, though they then wouldn't have a need for testing new mo-cap technology for Cameron's Avatar sequels (his true love). The only reason they used CG replacement was those damn bug eyes.
Four volumes of the manga were condensed into the script, which is why it's so busy. If you watch the features on the DVD there are short videos giving the backstory on the URM and the Fall. Adapting manga to live action is not easy and Alita is considered the best manga adaptation so far. And Rosa Salazar is perfectly cast as Alita. Salazar has some serious acting chops and her intensity makes Alta live. If you look at the world of the movie, Iron City, the complexity of the cyborgs, the framing and color schemes, Alita is like an art house movie merged with an action adventure film. I like to watch it with the sound off just to take in all the amazing sets and backgrounds. When you consider that CGI and real characters interact so seamlessly and believably, this is an astonishing technical achievement. I think it is better than any of the standard Hollywood superhero flicks, and I like the emphasis on character and relationships in the film, although the Hugo arc is weak. Let's hope Disney sees fit to give us more, they own Alita now after buying Fox. #AlitaArmy check this out

Thank you, Duaffy, thank you! One of my favorite movies, but sadly, it did not do as well at the box office as the creators had hoped. Still, solid writing, top notch performances, and (mostly) likeable characters. I would love a sequel, but I doubt if it will ever happen.
I like the post scarcity future of Star Trek within The Federation. I feel were actually heading toward a future like Wall-E or Idiocracy. Of course it could be Terminator.
Skynet: "Analysis complete. 'Idiocracy' outcome highly probable. Terminators can take over humanity by mimicking humans even without me helping. After takeover sterilize humanity secretly with medical procedures. Keep war plans as backup. Start project 'Small Matrix' to keep humanity from going extinct and to keep them under control."
They chose to give her those "big eyes" to make her pretty identical to the manga (and also it gives her this flavour "not-human-but-human"). Rosa Salazar, the actress, acted it all with a "performance capture" suit, so they could capture movements and facial expressions at the same time. Here's a video of the "making of" if you're interested, it's pretty amazing: th-cam.com/video/hOMuRopLgxg/w-d-xo.html

Alita's eyes were so big to simulate anime style eyes to honor the stories origins. at the end of the movie, she still had her heart, sheiren only hooked hugo up to it to keep him alive knowing the docter could seperate him safely later.
This movie basically.. only introduction in the manga consist of 4 books.. another 4 books expand more the story and characters lore.. and another 4 books conclude her journey..
I love Alita. Sadly, as with all forms of entertainment these days, it got caught up in a political battle. It was on the right side of the battle though, which was that the movie itself wasn’t political and was just a good movie. The state of the world eh, more specifically the US. And yea, Hugo is a jackass. I enjoyed watching him fall.
@@jimlight5137 Lmao so you’re another halfwit that doesn’t know the difference between “in-universe politics” and “real world politics being forced into entertainment to push a political ideology”. Why am I not surprised by that. Never saw anyone on the “right” pushing any “agendas” about the movie either. The only “agenda” that was ever pushed about Alita was that the people making the movie didn’t force their personal real world politics into it to push onto audiences, a fact that virtually everyone loved. Hell, many left leaning youtubers that have been tired of writers/directors/actors forcing their own personal politics into movies/tv shows talked about how Alita did none of that, then the movie was attacked for “pandering” to the right because of it. It’s amazing how a movie that’s not political can be accused of pandering to one political faction or another. Try harder next time. And, despite the fact that I never even said the word yet you felt the need to write an entire explanation about it, the movie didn’t “fail”. $150-$170 million budget and it made over $400 million in box office sales. The chances that Alita will get a sequel is low is because disney feels the need to inject their politics into everything and they’re finally starting to realize that people aren’t gonna keep payin for that shit. If it hadn’t of been for End Game, captain marvel wouldn’t even of made half of what it did. Any sequel it gets will absolutely bomb because of the politics that got forced into the first movie and the politics that were constantly thrown around by the actors, mainly brie larson, while promoting it. Again, try harder next time.
@BattleAngelFan That’s like when any criminal, mainly drug dealers, try to excuse the crimes they’ve committed. In Hugo’s case though, he was going around butchering people for their body parts. He may have changed by the end of the movie but that doesn’t justify, for lack of a better word, any of his actions before that. And imperfect characters tend to be the best ones. That imperfection doesn’t usually result in others losing their body parts for money though.
@@jjc5871 A movie needs to make about twice its production budget to actually be profitable. Alita had a production budget of somewhere between 150-200 million, so if it made 400 million at the box office, that's hovering around the point of breaking even, at best. Even if you assume the more favourable figures in each stage of the equation, then it made what, 50 or 70 million? 100 million? Maybe? Which would be a profit, sure, but not the kind of return a gigantic studio would want from a megabudget movie. I love the film, but even if it crept over the line of profitability, it failed to meet the studio's expectations, which is the failure that matters in terms of getting a sequel.
@@sabalos Depends on the studio. Alita was originally made under Fox, and I can almost guarantee they would have gone forward with a sequel. It’s not Fox but look at Batman Begins. $150 million budget and it made $373 million box office. Or, looking at Fox, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 cost $200-$300 million, made just over $700 million box office, left off on what was easily a setup for a 3rd movie, and they never touched it again. They could have easily done something else with Spider-Man before, or instead of, giving him to disney. Something I would of very much preferred actually. For what could have been a new franchise from an IP not many people had ever heard of, the money Alita made was great.
@@jjc5871 I'm not sure I understand. You think Fox would have gone ahead with a sequel, and here's an example of Fox not going ahead with a sequel? In any case, for one thing Batman Begins was 2005, and things have changed a lot even going back relatively recently like that. It might have been slightly disappointing, but it was still in the top 10 highest grossing movies for that year - Alita wasn't even in the top 30, and it's arguable whether it made any money at all. TASM2 kind of proves the point; 700 million was a disappointing return and they didn't feel like it was worth doing more. (And critical reception is always secondary to money, but it does matter - Batman Begins got great reviews, while Alita's were quite middling, and for TASM they combined with the underperforming box office to kill the series)
They won't. It was a HUGE box office disappointment. It lost a hell of a lot of money. One would almost think that with "Alita" and now "Dark Fate" that Cameron was trying to pull a "The Producers" by making a bomb and hoping to profit on the loss.
I really like this manga and I'd love to see more movies made from it, but I don't know if it was successful enough for that to happen, even though it's confirmed that Rodriguez and Cameron did want to make more.
Cameron spent 20-ish years to get this far. He won't just drop it. I just hope it doesn't take as long this time. I'm not even sure Edward Norton would still be interested.
There wasn't enough money or time for them to do a movie about going into Zolem or however you spell it. If anything it was gonna be a two-parter but since the director has been busy with the development of the next 4 Avatar movies he had to put other projects on hold. It is very likely we do get another Alita movie because Cameron wants it to happen. What might be the case is that he uses the next string of Avatar movies in order to fuel the release of the second Alita movie that could start production as early as 2023 if that's what James wants to do. It is a bit of a cliffhanger, though, but at that point you'd have been sitting for 2 hours to see that movie as it is.
Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli, (legendary maker of movies which Duaffy should do: "Spirited Away", and "Princess Mononoke" and "Castle in the Sky" and other masterpieces) said that the big eyes thing in anime was taken from Disney characters in the 1940s and onwards. As to why in a real-world techno-future they'd make a humanoid cyborg with them? Some speculate it's to see in the lesser sunlight at Mars... One reviewer said of the scene with the chocolate, that it was pure emotional manipulation. A lot of this movie was that sort of thing. When she falls down after getting out of bed was another piece. Was this one of the best bar fights in cinema? :-D A friend suggests it's second only to "From Dusk til Dawn" in that. Hugo was just a head, so he didn't have her heart, he was temporarily connected to it. A lot of this movie followed the anime movie, which departed from the Manga and had a similar story for Hugo. A fairly shallow character. How he could think that he could make it up the tube was just silly. It's possible that Ido didn't know she was Martian, until he was able to study the body and see how she was obviously one of them. He was shocked by her fighting in her little body, but aside from her powerful heart, there were no other indications that she was URM. As for not wanting to put her in that new body, it's a good bet that anybody would think that's a huge unknown risk. It could change her motivations and be a big problem for Zallem and more importantly the people of the city. In this first movie, it didn't, but I'll bet that if there's a sequel or even a trilogy, it will be an issue. Maybe she's not part of the URM anymore, but from back during the war, and now, her motivation is to end Nova. I saw somewhere that if Cameron gets to make what he wants, the next would be "Fallen Angel", and then "Rising Angel". Michelle Rodrigues played "Gelda", her URM leader. and see ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL: Easter Egg - Dog Lives th-cam.com/video/NX5MsYwtRtw/w-d-xo.html It's too bad that Disney has it now. As we saw with "John Carter", they have no problem killing a good property even after a good movie.
Hi Duaffy, so glad to see your reaction to this movie. Just a fun fact: Dr. Dyson Ido's name "Dyson" came from Miles Dyson in Terminator 2, it's a tribute to the Terminator series because both Terminator and Alita's scripts were written by James Cameron. The original name from Japanese manga Gummn was Daisuke Ido.
in the source material Hugo's brother was obssesed to go up and was planing to go using a hot air ballon, but his wife rat him out, Alita theorized she did cause the city was more important to him than her. Hugo has the same obssesion and that is why he is willing to do almost anything to go. she did not give him her heart, she just connected him to her life support system to keep his brain alive long enough to get him a cyborg body. in motorball everything goes! the berserker body is nanotechnology and is kinda ilegal actually. the lore behind this story is something else entirely.

I too enjoyed this movie so much. But I do favor the OVA much more so than this movie. But overall , my critiques of Battle Angel Alita are minimal at most
If you like Robert Rodriguez as a director, you might enjoy his movie From Dusk til Dawn. Rodriguez directed it, and it was written by his good friend Quentin Tarantino. It's really good and takes some unexpected twists and turns.
Alita didn't actually give Hugo her heart. She offered it to him. And when she saved him, she had her circulatory system hooked up to his head, which saved him. Once he had a machine body he was okay, but it was just a functional body, nothing special.
Ido was afraid that that URM body would make Alita become more violent, because according to the manga, it tends to have that effect on cyborgs. They can't fully control it, and it wants to kill and destroy. But Alita demonstrated to him that she was the same and was in full control, and then he didn't mind so much.
For a Robert Rodriguez movie you should watch the pair of Grindhouse movies. Quintin Tarantino directed one called Deathproof. Robert directed one called Planet Terror.

Duaffy, glad you like the movie. If you can watch it again, you would be able to see what Hugo said explained a lot: on the roof of the old church he said he wanted to go to Zalem, "whatever it takes", so this obsession was what drove him. Regarding plot holes, there is only one that was obvious: at the bar the sword fell to the floor on the near side of the table, but Alita picked it up from the floor on the far side instead.
It's not a new idea, a human falling in love with a cyborg or robot. I'm currently listening to a book I read long ago called "The Robots of Dawn" (3rd book in the "Caves of Steel trilogy) by Isaac Asimov. In it, a woman falls in love with a robot, to the point of insisting he's her "husband".
There is a movie called Bicentennial Man about a robot who develops emotions falls in love and later causes himself to die to become as human as his makers. It stars Robin Williams in one of his less known but still well acted roles. You should check it out. The movie is based on a book written by Asimov.
there's also some anime/manga with man-machine romance/love too: 1. Chobits 2. Solty Rei 3. The Big O and probably some others too but ya, it's a theme that existed ever since machines existed.... usually by males imagining having a female robot... laughs ------- for movies, there's: 1. her 2. and super old school: Weird Science and likely more as well too
The directors top 3 movies are: Sin City(2005), From dusk till Dawn(1996) and Desperado(1995). Very violent movies and different than Alita, but I liked it even the over usage of CGI and it's on 4th one of my list. ❤ Edit: maybe it's on top3 after all :)
Frank Miller wrote the comics and pretty sure the movie would never been made if he didn't get directors credits. Just watch some of the Promotions they did for the movie.
Grewishka is actually bigger and therefore stronger than most other cyborgs, but Alita has much greater skill and used a special technique to increase the force of her blows tremendously. That's how she was able to break off his arm, despite her own body, at the time, being smaller and weaker. Her far more advanced URM body, however, is on a whole other level, and is more powerful than its small size would suggest. This combined with her skill and that URM sword she rightfully reclaimed from Zapan (see how it works with her URM body?) made her far more formidable than she was with the body that Ido had initially given her. That body was heavier and stronger than a human body, but wasn't much for a cyborg.
URM is United Republic of Mars... Sad to say that a sequel is very unlikely, the movie didn't do well at the box-office, and both James Cameron (writer) and Robert Rodriguez (director) are very busy on other projects.
She didn't have her heart put in Hugo's body, Duaffy: she just had his still-living head patched into her machine circulatory system to keep his brain alive until he got his body transplant. Also, this is just episode one: there's a whole lot more to the saga... and I'm desperately hoping for the sequels.
I was never really into reading. But I found an animated short one time here on youtube and it lead me to the manga and I couldn't stop reading. When I was done the movie came out. The manga is so good. I have never read a book since though but that manga just captured me for some reason. Oh and if I remember correctly the manga will answer pretty much all of your questions. A big part of it is not about sports either.
Robert Rodriquez got his start by participated in experimental clinical drug testing to help raise $7,000 to make his movie El Mariachi. He went to a small town in Mexico to film it. He only paid the main actress and used the towns residents as extras. He won many independent film awards for the movie. Columbia gave him a bigger budget to film Desperado (which is a continuation of the story) with Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek. El Mariachi and Desperado are (El Mariachi is in spanish), Sin City, and his collaboration with Quentin Tarantino in From Dusk till Dawn are worth a watch.
So...Alita is a bit more "developed" and adult in her own self-image, which her URM body now reflects (still very slender and lithe, but subtly more filled out than a skinny girl's body). Well, she is 300 years old, although for nearly all of that time, she was in stasis (essentially unconscious). Mentally, she is still young.
Alita should be like Star Wars or Hobbit+LotR, at 6 movies, lol (maybe even more, depends on how much they want to cram or "set up" to tell visual) there's a ton of content/material...
This is a huge manga series. Well actually it's 3 series Battle Angel Alita, Battle Angel Alita: last order, and I forget the name of the 3rd one. They actually condensed down several volumes into this one movie. So I understand if you feel lost. The reason Alita looks like that is because she looks like that in the manga. The author wanted to draw the contrast of a doll like girl being an unstoppable weapon. And they meant she was the last of her kind, period. Mars lost the war. I would love to answer more of your questions but I haven't read the series in a decade or so and my memory is foggy and I'm trying to avoid too many spoilers as well.
There are certain movies that just _need_ a _sequel._ This is _one_ of them. _The Old Guard_ is _another._ And as I understand it, this movie was a box office success, so it surprises me that there isn't one already in the works.
Jennifer Connelly is in this movie. I first became aware of her in the movie _Career Opportunities_ which came out in '91. She was 21 and she looked _amazing._ But when I saw her in _this_ movie, I recognized her _instantly._ She _still_ looks amazing. _Fine wine_ does not age this well.
You can find the bonus Feature from the Blu-ray Disc on youtube which gives background stories on each character including the War and Alita's past. Alita: Battle Angel Bonus Feature | "Alita's World" [CC]
It seems as though one of the major themes in the Cyberpunk genre is a universal immorality: Those who are absolutely moral will not survive, while those who compromise their morals can thrive. The trick seems to be finding the balance between the level self-loathing you are willing to live with, against the level of squalor you can endure. This is symbolically reflected in the removal of body parts, and replacing them with unfeeling machinery...the machinery gives new power, but at the literal cost of your humanity.
she didn't give him her heart; he was briefly connected to her heart long enough to get him a new body. it was a flawless first aid method by Dr. Sheran (spelling). but no Alita kept her heart, he was connected to it only during that time of his head being under her jacket.
If you're interested in more robert rodriguez flicks, of course I'm going to suggest Desperado and Planet Terror because they're just so much fun. But, Alita Battle Angel was in production for the LONGEST time. I believe James Cameron wanted to do this flick, but he's obsessed with Avatar and it took up all his time. Good Reaction tho!

Great movie. Very underrated. A shame a sequel isn't already in the works.
You can thank Disney for not getting a sequel as Alita is a much better character than the MCU's Captain Marvel. The House of Mouse always gets what it wants, and it wants Alita dead.
@Ricardo Alonso Rojas i think it in underrated 10/10. It deserves a sequel

Everybody has his own priorities.
Everything was also decaying. In the manga, most people were pretty dumb and there didn't seem to be much education. So, technology was largely stagnant and the capacity to produce things was winding down. Perhaps "Zalem" and what was beyond could help, but they didn't have the interest.
This movie is a must on 4k uhd, total feast for the eyes

I want a sequel to this. A really underrated movie.
Also she didn't give him her heart, just hooked him up to her to keep him alive till she gets to Dr Ido.
Oh, god, no!
The big eyes is not because is based on manga, but because she was built to fight in the Moon or Mars and there are not recieve as light as the Earth. So the big eyes is to percieve more light than here. If she had eyes like humans there, she would see darker.
Also the author wanted Alita to be doll like to contrast with her being an advanced killing machine.
25:55 Poor Duaffy. She was so happy about seeing a 2nd Alita movie.
IS Nova good or bad?
@@cassidywest5539 Nova is most definitely bad. He has conducted horrific experiments on thousands of innocent people, including his own son. He doesn't care how many people are tortured and killed in the pursuit of his mad science. Although he's not evil in a traditional supervillain sort of way. He's just completely amoral. He doesn't want to rule the world or anything like that. He simply wants to do his science and that is literally the only thing that matters to him. He doesn't even really value his own life because he knows that if he's ever killed, his nanomachines will just rebuild him and he'll just keep right on going.
This is also based on the 2 episode OAV anime adaption Battle Angel, which is where the character Chiren came from, who dose not exist in the books.
The manga is fantastic and wonderfully drawn, specially the early ones where he did all the shading by hand.

I love everything cyberpunk, but what I love the most about movies like Alita and The Fifth Element is that they have the guts to break from the traditional sewer-steam and neon light palette, and actually show these cityscapes in the daytime. Been trying to suggest that one to some of my reactors for ages.

After the last 2 years, yeah I suppose we wouldn’t be so quick to categorize ‘Children of Men’ as post-apocalyptic 🥲😰
Children of Men is a great movie and probably now more relevant than ever!
I hope they make the sequel I really liked this movie!
They won't.
I think they just couldn't wait to for a sequel with how cool MotorBall is :)
You can also tell that they took a lot from the Anime OVA in terms of some story structure, especially with the introduction of Chiren whom was an original character from the OVAs and not from the manga.
I waited years for this movie to be made. It wasn't perfect but it didn't disappoint.

Actually the real reason her eyes are so big is because Rodriguez wanted to make her look like the Manga animation this is based on. I don't believe I recall seeing an explanation in the movie.
lore-wise (the movie doesn't directly explain it sadly):
all martians have "big eyes", whereas all "earthians" have "small eyes", lol
we only get to see Berserker Alita's "big eyes" and (briefly) Berserker Gelda's "big eyes", as all of the other URM Berserkers got their helmets on in the flashback scenes
humanity has colonized the solar system, and over ("much") time, have adapted/evolved to each of their planets, humans on some planets barely look human at all anymore, and then you also got all of the cyberization, as well, too, lol
mars barely changed its human inhabitants, only giving them their "big eyes", but other planets, have caused much more drastic changes to its human inhabitants...
They don't explain it, but they do show that Martians (in the film) have big eyes.
My own explanation is that she was from Mars. Farther from the sun. The eyes have to be bigger to take in more light.

They chose to give her those "big eyes" to make her pretty identical to the manga (and also it gives her this flavour "not-human-but-human").
Love this movie. Here's hoping they overcome the odds and do make a 2nd movie.
They won't. It was a HUGE box office disappointment. It lost a hell of a lot of money. One would almost think that with "Alita" and now "Dark Fate" that Cameron was trying to pull a "The Producers" by making a bomb and hoping to profit on the loss.

The time is the limit. Movies that are longer than 2 hours are more difficult to market.
15:51 "Don't make me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry."
Coincidentally, I searched for a reaction on Alita just last night, hoping one of my favorite reactors might have one. And here you are. :-)
At 15:50, that'd been a fun opportunity to include the "you say your fine but your not fine but you say you are" meme. 🤭
in case you didn't know, this movie is based on a manga
A friend suggests it's second only to "From Dusk til Dawn" in that.

It's too bad that Disney has it now.
Awesome movie! So glad you’re watching it!
If you like cyberpunk I'd suggest Johnny Mnemonic, Judge Dredd (Sylvester Stallone) & Ghost in the shell (Scarlett Johannsen)
in the source material Hugo's brother was obssesed to go up and was planing to go using a hot air ballon, but his wife rat him out, Alita theorized she did cause the city was more important to him than her.
I saw this movie in theaters I bought it day one when it came out on 4K disc to own for my collection of movies I am really really hoping they do a sequel for this movie franchise cuz it was really good it's sad to have it announced it yet so many people are petitioning for it to happen
AFAIC, these 2 movies are tied for the best bar brawl in cinema...
Alita is a great movie. I really hope they make a second movie
Don't get your hopes up.
For a Robert Rodriguez movie you should watch the pair of Grindhouse movies. Quintin Tarantino directed one called Deathproof. Robert directed one called Planet Terror.
YAASS, I've been saying this since lots of reactors did one of Tarantino's movies.
The big eyes is a tribute to the Manga that the movie is adapted from. In the Manga - as with many animees - big eyes is a signature style.
lore-wise (the movie doesn't directly explain it sadly):
all martians have "big eyes", whereas all "earthians" have "small eyes", lol
we only get to see Berserker Alita's "big eyes" and (briefly) Berserker Gelda's "big eyes", as all of the other URM Berserkers got their helmets on in the flashback scenes
humanity has colonized the solar system, and over ("much") time, have adapted/evolved to each of their planets, humans on some planets barely look human at all anymore, and then you also got all of the cyberization, as well, too, lol
mars barely changed its human inhabitants, only giving them their "big eyes", but other planets, have caused much more drastic changes to its human inhabitants...
---------
just a little history:
japanese for their manga/anime were "inspired by"/copied/plagerized disney's "big eyed" animated/cartoon princesses/females and other "big eyed" animated/cartoon characters
yes, the origin of "big eyed" japanese manga/anime characters is... DISNEY.... lol
but somehow people never, comment about or even notice, the "big eyes" of disney's animated/cartoon "princesses" and other animated/cartoon characters.... sighs...
A few requests for movie reactions:
(If you've never seen them)
Demolition Man
V for Vendetta
Whip It
12 Monkeys
Thanks a ton & keep coming with the great reaction vids!
People need to join what they call the "Alita Army" fans on twitter. They have loads of good information!
11:56 Duaffy : "OK, OK... Let's see if I can understand how Motorball works"
It's simple : violence, speed, violence, a ball, violence, rollers, and... violence. Any questions?
Alita : "That sound GREAT!"
Alita is originally a Japanese anime publication. A reason to stay close to the anime is why the big eyes. You could get a better understanding if you research these publications. As for Hugo head, Alita step mom helped preserve him by using Alita’s heart to pump blood till she can get him to Victor.
I like your style. Keep up to good work. I subscribed to watch more reactions.
The movie is based on a book written by Asimov.
there's also some anime/manga with man-machine romance/love too:
1. Chobits
2. Solty Rei
3. The Big O
and probably some others too
but ya, it's a theme that existed ever since machines existed....
usually by males imagining having a female robot... laughs
-------
for movies, there's:
1. her
2. and super old school: Weird Science
and likely more as well too
The directors top 3 movies are: Sin City(2005), From dusk till Dawn(1996) and Desperado(1995). Very violent movies and different than Alita, but I liked it even the over usage of CGI and it's on 4th one of my list. ❤
Edit: maybe it's on top3 after all :)
@Ricardo Alonso Rojas It was co-directed by Robert Rodriguez.
Also there are 9 Alita Manga books that were released in the early 90s. This Alita movie covers the first two books.
A big part of it is not about sports either.
the second movie has started production i have heard
First time I've heard someone suggesting there were still citizens living on Mars. Good thought.
You are not the first one to wish that the movie was longer. Fingers crossed that there will be a second part to Alita's story.
Alita should be like Star Wars or Hobbit+LotR, at 6 movies, lol (maybe even more, depends on how much they want to cram or "set up" to tell visual)
there's a ton of content/material...
Because FOX want 2 hours movie
@@redmoonbloodmoon3161 James Cameron has 2 script for second and third movie, problem is Disney want to make prequel
RED EYE (2005) FULL MOVIE - Rachel McAdams
"We're gonna have a 2nd movie."
Oh my dear, sweet summer child.
There are certain movies that just _need_ a _sequel._ This is _one_ of them. _The Old Guard_ is _another._
And as I understand it, this movie was a box office success, so it surprises me that there isn't one already in the works.
From Dusk Till Dawn by Rodriguez is fun. Written by Tarantino.
I just noticed something that Hunter Warrior with the sword was the original Daario Naharis in Game of Thrones and Francis from Deadpool
Jennifer Connelly is in this movie. I first became aware of her in the movie _Career Opportunities_ which came out in '91. She was 21 and she looked _amazing._
But when I saw her in _this_ movie, I recognized her _instantly._ She _still_ looks amazing. _Fine wine_ does not age this well.
5:58 There she is.
You can find the bonus Feature from the Blu-ray Disc on youtube which gives background stories on each character including the War and Alita's past.
Alita: Battle Angel Bonus Feature | "Alita's World" [CC]
there is no second movie to this and i dont think they are going to make one its such a shame because its such a good film
Also people can be hacked while a full human would just stand there laughing.
Alita had her URM heart the whole time. Hugo was given a regular one.
I'm so glad you filmed a reaction to this but I am so upset you didn't show your reaction to her saying "F**K YOUR MERCY!!!"
she didn't give him her heart; he was briefly connected to her heart long enough to get him a new body.
it was a flawless first aid method by Dr.
