    Most musicians and experts agree that this song meets all the criteria to actually be the first disco song.
    In style, composition
    And musical cadence.

    • @mickdenis6630

      Still wasn't a song, in the disco era.

  • @thomastimlin1724
    @thomastimlin1724 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    "Rock the Boat" is considered one of the earliest disco songs. Some authorities proclaim it to be the first disco song to hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, while others give that distinction to "Love's Theme" by Love Unlimited Orchestra or "TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)" by MFSB, both chart-toppers from earlier in 1974. The song became a gold record.

    Like others here I was a kid in the seventies too and like they said there was no internet, nada. No cable television. No telephone answering machines. No vcr's. No personal computers. What there was were books, newspapers, magazines, vinyl records, eight-track tapes, and a handful of broadcast television stations depending on the size of the city you lived in, with some still broadcasting in black and white, and maybe two dozen radio stations on the AM and FM radio bands. Some FM stations broadcast in stereo with higher audio quality that sounded pretty good on a relatively inexpensive stereo system with two ten or twelve inch speakers. The audio equipment available today is incredible in contrast, but it developed from that last generation of analog tech. Anyway. I probably spent more time as a kid playing games outside, riding bicycles around the neighborhood, and getting into trouble than consuming media. But the radio delivered music and music is content you can listen to while doing other things. So songs like "Rock the Boat" remain etched in my mind from hearing them on the radio over the course of several years. The Temptations definitely inspired the style of the song, but they inspired the style of a lot of songs in the seventies. Check out The O'Jays "Use Ta Be My Girl" from 1978 or Earth, Wind & Fire "Shining Star" from 1975. But for a song nearer in time to "Rock the Boat", check out George McCrae "Rock Your Baby" from 1974 or Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose "Too Late To Turn Back Now" from 1972 or back to The O'Jays with "Love Train" from 1972.

      That's not true, the disco era hadn't even started yet. This was an R & B song from the 70s. The first disco song to hit the top spot in era was Johnny Taylor's Disco Lady. Wikipedia is alway trying to rewrite history and tell us who were there how it was (but it wasn't)...

    • @StatisticsJason
      @StatisticsJason 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@mickdenis6630 I didn't get that info from Wikipedia. Casey Kasem mentioned it several times over the years on his countdown show. Also everything I have read says 1974 not 1976, was the start of the disco era. Gloria Gaynor's disco version of "Never Can Say Goodbye" was 1974 and Van McCoy's "The Hustle" was 1975.

    • @StatisticsJason
      @StatisticsJason 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@mickdenis6630 "Disco Lady" was the first #1 song with the word disco in the title but disco was in full swing by then. I remember, I was alive back then and listening to it.

    • @mickdenis6630
      @mickdenis6630 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@StatisticsJason Well what you read and being there, are 2 different things.. the disco era is from 75-80. I though Disco Lady was 75, my bad (top of 76). If you want to get official, the disco charts began in September of 1974, Gloria Gaynor was the first #1 on the disco chart, the song never went #1 on the pop charts (#9). Rock the Boat and Rock Your Baby (George McCrae) precede September of 74. The Hustle was a dance of the era, and I have heard it mention before, but then again, come to think of it, Labelle's Lady Marmalade hit #1 at the end of March 75. I disagree that disco era was in full swing in 76, it was in full swing in 77/78, set off by SNF in 77, and that is when all the dance shows starting popping up on tv, Club 747 etc and later Dance Fever.

    "Hues Corporation"... Howard Hughes was the most notorious, bizarre, reclusive super rich guy of this era.

    I think this song was in the movie "The Martian". Great song. Classic. Catchy.

    Angela - are you still taking suggestions? My sure fire 5 is “Lovin’ is Really My Game” by Brainstorm. (1978) I think you would love it! 😍

    Hi Angela,
    I believe this was the first number one of the Disco era. It’s a huge hit. And you chair-danced just fine!❤
    I’m going to give you a suggestion when the dancing is over. I have a contender for Her Voice!, this is my nominee. Amazingly it’s a Carpenters cover! Who’d a thunk it? Someone covering Karen being a contender for the title. Well here ya go. The song is We’ve Only Just Begun. The nominee it Tori Holub, she’s 20 the same age as Karen in the same song. I’m confident if you see this you’ll put her in the Her Voice! Class. Wings of Pegasus analyzed her and found no autotune, no pitch correction. Just a normal clean voice. His episode on Tori has passed 250K views. So, I’m not alone.
    Thank you for your time Angela. The link is below.
