    Great video, thanks! My wife was just asking me to grow some purple onions this year and your video happened to pop up in my feed. I haven't grown onions from seed so the timing was perfect.

      I began growing from seed a few years ago, having previous grown them from sets I bought at Home Depot. I much prefer doing it from seed now. Good luck!

    Good morning, from Windermere, Florida zone 9b USA 🇺🇸 🌞 🇺🇸
    We are saying goodbye to winter here in Central Florida. Our days are climbing into the 70's and 80's!
    Good luck with your channel 👍 I think you have a wonderful voice and excellent advice and presentation.

      Thank you, but please don't rub it in on how warm it is by you. :) We had three days in the 60s and 70s before it plunged to the mid-20s again last night. I don't think we're over winter just yet. Cheers!

    7a here but definitely a different part of the country in the middle Tennessee area. I'm also trying onions from seed this year, so can't wait to see how they both do!!

      I prefer growing from seeds versus sets or seedlings. Give them enough time and they'll swell right up and give you a great harvest. Cheers!

    Nice, waiting on my onion seeds to germinate myself here in N.Y zone 6a. I have them in my furnace room. Covered with glad wrap.

      They can take upwards of 3 weeks to sprout so patience is definitely a virtue! The Ailsa Craig seeds I sowed haven't sprouted yet tho the Yellow Sweet Spanish are up and running. The Ailsa Craig seed, however, is 2-3 years old and it doesn't store very well so I may not get any of those this year

      @@gardengrowngroceries I sowed only one pkg that I had. Sweet spainsh yellow Utah Jumbo from 21. Didn't know till recent research that onion seeds don't last like other seeds when it comes to germination. Tommorow will be 3 weeks. Almost time for me to give up lol.

      @@gardengrowngroceries How do you store your seeds? I store my seed packs stuffed in a tight glass jar in the fridge and freezer. No differences between freezer and fridge for me. I put one of those free desiccant packs in each jar. Get those free from pairs of new shoes and stuff like that. Even my onion seeds last a decade or so.

    NJ 7A here too. This will be my first year growing onions. This video came at the perfect time as I was wondering when I should start planting my seeds. I look forward to your updates. Thank you!

      Thank you. After the winter layover it’s good to get something growing again and onions are an easy thing to whet that hankering to get in the garden. It’s also helpful that the onions need that extra time too. Good luck and let me know how you do!

      Thank you! You spend a little more upfront making your own seed starting mix, but it quickly pays itself in no time. cheers!

    Thanks for the tips on making seed starting soil. And using the colander! Very clever!

    • @gardengrowngroceries
      @gardengrowngroceries  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! Buying the components for making your own soil costs a little bit more upfront, but over the long haul it is so much cheaper and it's not going to go bad on you, so even if you don't plant many seeds of your own, they will last you years and years. Cheers!

      Thank you! As the season heats up and more vegetables are planted, the videos will grow in length. At the end of the growing season, say when I harvest my onions, I’ll be putting together week-by-week growing guides to take you from planting all the way through harvest in one video.
      These current videos are attempting to show what you can plant and when. Thanks for watching!

    Were there updates to the onions that were sown in this video? I don't see them on the playlist. How did they turn out? Did you get a good harvest with them?

    • @gardengrowngroceries
      @gardengrowngroceries  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! Actually every week I update how my onions were growing. I actually update how all of my vegetables are doing all year long, from seed planting to harvest. You can watch their progress every step of the way. But I did have a good harvest last year. I hope to go even bigger this year! Here's last year's harvest video: th-cam.com/video/Oc_xUO4_4zY/w-d-xo.html

    Also Jersey 7a here. Started my onions indoors 2 weeks ago.. Thinking about trying to "winter sow" some as an experiment, have you tried it? Keep us posted on your progress, thanks for the good video.

    • @gardengrowngroceries
      @gardengrowngroceries  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. I have not tried winter sowing yet. TBH come October or November when the last of the fall crops have been harvested I enjoy the break from the garden. I mean it’s not a long one since I start sowing onions in January but the short respite is useful for me to recharge my batteries and allow myself to become excited at the thought of the coming spring. Let me know how your experiment goes if you try it. Cheers!

    I do my own seed mix near enough the same as you but i use Coco Coir instead of the Peat Moss, and i don't have the Vermiculite mixed in but i do use a very fine Vermiculite to sprinkle on the top.

      Welcome! And I’ve done that too in the past with vermiculite. The added advantage, particularly when planting seed outdoors, is it marks the location of your seed. Cheers!

      Each week I post an update on how all of my vegetables are doing, including the onions. When I eventually harv est them, I will compile all the clips into a single video so there will be a complete log week-by-week of how each vegetable grew.
