    Being a first generation child automatically makes you a translator. On a side note, I always found it odd how we say te quiero to our family as opposed to te amo, when really they mean the same thing. I guess te amo is more for the lovers and partners.

    It is not easy to learn another language, especially when you are older. However, most people, with time and effort. can learn enough so they can function in ordinary circumstances. Depending on first and second generation translators is a crutch. Without these translators to rely on, individuals would be forced to learn the language. I am a native speaking of English, as an adult, I learnt to speak Spanish and Italian. During the process I lived in Spain and Italy. I purposely stayed away from anyone who spoke English. It was the "swim or sink method, " and it worked! Any native who saw I was struggling with the language and attempted to speak in English , I explained I was trying to learn their language and please speak to me in Spanish or Italian. They were always happy to comply.

    This video hits really close to home. I was brought to the US when I was 3 and learned English as soon as I was in kindergarten. My parents on the other hand, they still struggle with English even after living here for over a decade. I remember being small and being embarrassed to translate for them because my parents and my language didn't fit the white family ideal that I had internalized in school. If there's one thing I regret from my childhood is being embarrassed of who I was, who my parents were. There's not a day that goes by that I wish I hadn't bought into the lies this American society feeds immigrant children. If you're an immigrant child, please don't get angry with your parents over this language barrier. They're trying their best and just need a little help.

    • @sashanunez1766
      @sashanunez1766 7 ปีที่แล้ว +45

      I agree so much. I used to always tell my mom she was too loud. Her accent was so strong when she opened her mouth everyone would look. Now I feel very bad because I was embarrassed of my mom. Even though she was trying her best. I'm very patient with anyone who cannot speak english well. Especially where I work if I notice someone is latino and is having a hard time communicating I just switch into Spanish and they're always surprised (and thankful at the same time)!

    1:10 is extremely relatable like i swear whenever my mom has to ever call for something she needs and the person on the phone doesn't speak spanish my mom always says "I no speaka english talk with my daughter" and soon it's just her passing me the phone and putting me on the spot. I'd have no problem being a translator if only my mom didn't want me to say whole paragraphs to the person on the phone while not giving me time to translate😓

    Soy cajera y veo la "que dijo", "dile a ella... " y "cuanto es" situación todos los días. Soy afro americana y aprendí español hace pocos años. usualmente cuando me doy cuenta que los clientes no hablan inglés, respondo directamente a la persona que necesita ayuda en español y no a la traductora. Las reacciones que me dan no tiene precio 😂😂. Me encanta español y mas gringos y gringas como yo necesitan aprenderlo.
