You playing the PAFs almost brought tears it sounded so heartfelt and beautiful and the PAFs were perfect for this in both positions even though I love old 50s p90s for balls to the wall raucous sound. I wish I could compare those two
The advantages to P90 pickups is they generally have more high end and low end. Most people would probably assume this isn't the case but it absolutely is. P90 pickups cover more of the audio spectrum than humbuckers and they also stay a lot cleaner and more precise in terms of their tone. try a comparison with a lot of gain.. then you will see what one shines.
They are both gorgeous sounding, loving the clean tones you are getting out of them. P90s for me out of the two, love the Pelham Blue finish. Would say that it would be the humbuckers in the Les Paul though - maybe because it has more wood?
Glad I can finally hear these played by someone with a good tone setup. Most guitar review/playthrough videos are people playing with the most awful high gain low distortion sounds
Thank you Sasha! Thank you for this video, beautiful playing! I think they both sound awesome though so I'm still undecided but I do like the sg special. Take care and thank you
Thanks for the great demonstration. P90 ~ I heard warmer smoothed over sound. Sort of farther way~ Pick-up height? Humbucker ~ I heard edgier, sharper focused range of tone. More present or immediate. I'm wondering if you meter-tested the output from them to compare. Did you have to change the guitars' volume to get the same loudness out of the amplifier? (You probably left the amp' controls exactly the same throughout.) I like the P90 for clean.
I never played a guitar (a Gibson) with P90s until around 2013. Up 'til then, it was all humbuckers. For me, it's one of those things.... I appreciate the tones from both. But if I had to choose one, it would have to be P90s. They sound warmer to my ears while being a little "grittier" at the same time.
Great demo! Impossible to choose which one is better. I'm a p90 fan but this humbucker sound great! If I can, probably, I choose a 64 ones (Aesthetic reason only)
Curious how a Les Paul junior holds up to a Les Paul standard. I never see anybody contrasting it, specifically the one p90, and emulating the various humbuckers positions by way of volume/tone control.
Absolutely beautiful sounds! You are a fantastic player and evidently know how to present an instruments characteristics to the world. Very nice bro, I just subscribed
Good review. One of the very few guys who understands that in such a comparison it is not that interesting to play super distorted sounds. Good job of demoing what the pickups are capable of!
This video is made for me! I bought a Gibson SG Special in blue much like the Custom Shop one here, only mine is just a humble US factory model. There are a few slight differences, chief of which, is the bridge P90 on mine - for reasons known only to...some prick at Gibson! - is set far closer to the bridge. It's visibly noticeable so much so that your whole guitar looks alien and misshapen to me. That is only because I'm used to seeing mine. So that's a visual difference...what about tonally? Night & day! My bridge p90 was so thwacky that I swapped it for a Lollar minihumbucker. Now it's not just thwacky, but it's chirpy aswell! 🤦♂️ Yours on the hand, sounds glorious! And, of course, that is what we think of when we think of P90 tone, is the great rock tones from the bridge. To pour salt into the wound, I now have noticed that the Epiphone version - a model that weighs in at not a fifth the price I paid for my Gibson - has the bridge P90 placed the same as the Custom Shop. So the cheapest and the most expensive SG Specials both got it right...it's the middle guy, who got screwed, for reasons still just.. inexplicable to me..0 P.S. I actually still love my SG. Even with this disappointing discovery about the bridge , it's still the nicest, most expensive and just gorgeous guitar I have ever owned. The neck P90 is that good, it's worth it for that alone. And with some tweaking, you can get some ok humbucker tones from the bridge - if a little chirpy. BTW.. I like the HH SG best. The Special is fun, but to really sink my teeth into rock, the Standard is the standard!
Man.....you're fortunate person and I think you don't know it. Special "standard" has the same distance between bridge and bridge PU than the SG. Junior......so.......really, you've got an SG Junior, with all the spank and twang from the Juniors, AND also a neck pickup. Meanwhile, the Customs and Squiers, are more similar in distance between bridge and PU like humbucker types...sweeter. Also...it depends a lot about your picking and attack style. You can profit A LOT your bridge PU. Go on!!!!! You've got an AMAZING piece of art!!!!
This model Special (with the longer distance between bridge and the bridge P.U.) is MY ultimate guitar. There are other "SG Specials" (with the wraparound closer to the P.U.) which don't sound very special. FWIW Distance between the bridge and the P.U. dictates the voicing of an electric guitar. The closer the P.U. is to the bridge, the brighter it sounds.
Same here and to add Pelham Blue...wonderful. Several years ago - I wanted to trade all of my guitars for a 2009 Standard Custom shop w/ Humbuckers with Maestro however. It played and looked as nice as a friends 1964 Standard with Sideways vibrato too. $3500 was just too steep though!
I just bought a Gibson SG standard Heritage Cherry with humbucking pickups in it. Now I'm debating whether or not I should buy one that has P90s in it? Decisions decisions
Why is it so hard for the regular Gibson factory to get the bevels right on the SG? These Gibson Customs are exactly how the bevels are supposed to be.
To me p90s always win, there is a certain clarity and fatness that p90s have and pushed with overdrive they just sound far more massive. I’ve been trying to get my hands on a p90 iommi special for a hot minute since Gibson released an affordable version.
I say that are both sweet as a baby's smile. Need my address? I WOULD like to have a push/pull tone knob to put one PUP out -of-phase with the other ... Some original SG Specials came OOP. Mighty shiny hardware for a CS SG Standard ... As usual, very nice application of phalanges upon those stringy things.
great sounds for this demo. Must be your playing! humbuckers just sound warmer. I had an SG with the vibrola bridge. If You looked at it wrong, the guitar would go out of tune. forget using it outside your house.
You playing the PAFs almost brought tears it sounded so heartfelt and beautiful and the PAFs were perfect for this in both positions even though I love old 50s p90s for balls to the wall raucous sound. I wish I could compare those two
I love guitars with a humbucker in the bridge and a P90 in the neck, get best of both worlds
I was thinking of doing this to make the neck pickup a little more pronounced.
Want a good neck humbucker, get something with an alnico 4 magnet
Good idea!! I couldn't make up my mind which was best

What a playing! Bravo!

High end guitars with someone who knows how to play. Its a sales trap!!! Haha. Love the tone from both guitars. Well played!
P90s are the most underrated pickups ever
Special all the way!
Mini humbuckers?
WHO IS UNDER RATING ALL THESE THINGS.STOP IT...NOTHING IS UNDER RATED.
@@pepuletrz the underrating is overrated...😀
Glad I can finally hear these played by someone with a good tone setup. Most guitar review/playthrough videos are people playing with the most awful high gain low distortion sounds
Great video before going to sleep x))
Beautiful sound !
Thank you Sasha! Thank you for this video, beautiful playing! I think they both sound awesome though so I'm still undecided but I do like the sg special. Take care and thank you
I love P-90's but Humbucker SG sounds incredible!! More clarity. Great playing!
Thanks for the great demonstration.

As soon as you played the first note on that special I thought... it's sabbath, I'm gonna get one of these bad boys, like the colour too
The wraparound bridge is the best sounding bridge Gibson has. It’s hard to dial it in right but when you do, it sings.
I guarantee you could never pick it out if you were blindfolded and someone played 4 SG's, one with wrap around and 3 with standard. Never.
Great demo! Impossible to choose which one is better. I'm a p90 fan but this humbucker sound great! If I can, probably, I choose a 64 ones (Aesthetic reason only)
Beautiful! I think I prefer the warmth of a p90 af a rhythm player. But humbuckers rock too!
Very nice playing! I dig the p90 more but you make both sound fantastic.
Great, great stuff !
Slight leaning to the humbuckers for me.
Curious how a Les Paul junior holds up to a Les Paul standard. I never see anybody contrasting it, specifically the one p90, and emulating the various humbuckers positions by way of volume/tone control.

Hi, both are great sounding pickups on there own, tasty playing too ! great demo !
have both .. P90's just have a special magic ...the SG Modern gives you both ...
been playin humbuckers for years. got my first p90 guitar and i love it
This video is made for me!

You’re an amazing player. Finally, somebody who can actually play music.
This model Special (with the longer distance between bridge and the bridge P.U.) is MY ultimate guitar.

I’m partial to Specials, wrap bridges, and P90s, but to me this Standard w Maestro sounded better.

Keep the standard, then find a 2000ish SG Classic with P-90s. They are around a grand.
You’re an excellent player bro. I’ve been looking at the P-90, but no one has one. Do you? In Pelham Blue?
fingers crossed, hope you find one! ...awesome guitar ...have the pelham blue and its one of my favorite guitar ...bridge p90 sounds incredible ;)
Just picked one up from Sweetwater, lefty. Hope you found yours!
P90s seems darker and more on the mids. Humbuckers, however, seems to have more gain, and it sings and shines on the hi-mids/highs.
soundwise the p90s but i think the guitar looks wrong without the bridge/stopbar combo. colour is to die for, though. great playing!
im looking for a second electric guitar to my telecaster. the p90 sg is so alluring
Txs! And nice play!
Why is it so hard for the regular Gibson factory to get the bevels right on the SG? These Gibson Customs are exactly how the bevels are supposed to be.
Because they want you to spend more money for the custom shop guitar.
Do you by chance listen to God Speed You! Black Emperor? lol :)
To me p90s always win, there is a certain clarity and fatness that p90s have and pushed with overdrive they just sound far more massive. I’ve been trying to get my hands on a p90 iommi special for a hot minute since Gibson released an affordable version.

Although I am a big fan of P90s, with this amp settings the humbuckers sound a little softer and spongier to my ears. Also colorwise the red SG wins.
What effect is he using at 3:56?
THIS GUY PLAYSSS PERFECT BTW VERY SOULFUL!
The P90's have a smoother sound but sometimes you want to let 'er rip with humbuckers so you need at least one guitar with each.
P-90s
what amp is this
Plug into a Hiwatt and jam out The Who.
Which Song Is It?
Where can I find a ledt handed Gibson SG Special?
In Ned Flanders' store 🙃
I preferred the p90's
Hmmm, I'll have to try the neck wave vibrato.....strange...
I never noticed I did this until I saw Chris Buck do it.
The key is to just buy a guitar with P-90s, not swap them out with another guitar. The SG is a great candidate for a P-90 guitar!
it's the wood. p90s love solid mahogany. and SG has to be solid mahogany to even BE an SG. i'm pretty sure they have NEVER been any other wood.
nice tone but P90 more sexy
😍
The humbuckers are shrill compared to the P 90s
chino moreno is that you
Why are P90s so good…
Amazing that Gibson Had that nailed very early on! Agreed, my fav pickups!
You need more gain.
P90s
