I have a TRM Atom and to me it’s worth the $200 I paid for it. I think it holds its own against my Spyderco knives in that price range. I spent about an hour and a half on my phone chasing it on drop day, it’s not something I need so it’s not that big of a deal to me. I enjoy it much more than my small Sebenza 21... Just scored a Neutron 1 on EBay so we’ll see. Almost all of the knives I’ve purchased in the last few years have been based on internet reviews, most knives are difficult to find to handle in person especially in the over $100 range.... I enjoyed hearing your point of view. Subscribed
Comparing the TRM to the Kershaw in this way is like comparing a high end watch to a $40 watch from amazon. Yes they both tell time. You might even like the way the cheap watch looks and think high end watches are pointless, and I would agree. For people who collect high-end items, we don't care about the cheap ones. The TRM Neutron is a fashion accessory that happens to cut things and I think it's fills that role well.
I'm about 2 years late in my response but I can at least offer my thoughts on this. You're right in a lot of areas. First, the price. Thing is you won't be able to find this knife at $125. You won't be able to find it at its true price anymore. This is a knife that has actually appreciated in value (some knives can do that). I overpaid like hell to get it :P I paid $290. Sometimes I'll pay to have it. Another example of a knife that appreciated in value is the Titanium F5.5. Can you find that at $269? I couldn't. Everyone is selling that for much more. So on a pricepoint I agree with you. It's overpriced and it's going up in value like Amazon stock. On youtuber influence, yes! But the thing is the person who had me interested is Cedric. Cedric's tests are objective. You see him cutting 500 ropes. Or 1000 ropes. Lot of his videos are just straight up facts. If you see a knife cutting 575 ropes. It's not so much an opinion, it's data. I've watched all his videos and I've studied his preferences. His current EDC is now the Neutron 2, which has replaced his Spyderco. That speaks volumes to me. That tells me there's something here. There was another reviewer, Knife Nerdery and he has a LOT of different knives. But in the end he mentioned his top EDCs were the Waypoint (which I have and agree with) and the Neutron 2. Truth be told I'm set to get the Neutron 2 this Monday. But I'm skeptical if it'll even beat out a Civivi Altus. But I definitely will put it through its paces and will compare it to knives I have, ie Civivi Altus, QC Waypoint, Seb Small, etc. But overall I'm glad that you've put out this vid because I thought the same way as well. Sometimes hype overtakes the real thing. It's honestly....indirectly..why I actually think my Civivi Altus is better flat-out better than every Benchmade Bugout. It's not a popular opinion. But similar to you, it's what I learned from comparison.
20 CV is in a whole different class than VG10. I’m no steel snob but that’s not a fair comparison and of course adds to the price point. Another big difference is TRM is more of a boutique mom and pop shop rather than a big box store like Kershaw. Hype is hype for sure spawned by reviewers but it’s more for knife enthusiasts who love chasing limited drops and playing small batch lottos than ppl just looking for a tool.
I just compare vg-10 because it is a common knife steel, it has nothing to do with TRM. I don't think TRM is a mom and pop store. They are a subsidiary of a bigger company with lots and lots of machinery. I think it is ridiculous that they have these shortages.
TRM will heat treat using Peter's, one of the best in the biz. They heat treat to 61hrc which is higher than all the other brands. Independent cut testing shows that it will out cut most steels in this price range. 300-320ft cut of cardboard on a 1" section. VG 10 does about 120ft cut of cardboard on a 1" section. Let's also compare other 20cv and m390... They cut around 150-200ft cut. So most 20cv is poorly heat treated. The Kershaw and benchmade dont even come close to the performance of the TRM. Nick shabaz doesn't know a thing about steel and testing. He is a influencer who is basically selling knives or hyping them up. Thin is good because it makes it easy to slice through things. Like cardboard. Its not a heavy use knife. Thin is rare in pocket knives.
You price recommendation is 125 bucks? Well show me another knife for 125 dollars with full carbon scales ,20cv, titanium liners and same level of customer service.
Just sold my Neutron 2 about 15 minutes ago. Its excellent, but just not for me. I prefer more fidgetable knives that are also comfortable to hold & use, like my Malibus, Bugouts, & 940s. I am definitely interested in checking out the TRM Shadow when I can get a hold of one, though.
I got my 2 TRMs (so far) not based on any hype and I don't listen to Shabazz. He's just a guy with an OPINION...and I take it for a grain of salt. I bought my TRMs because of the Made in America angle. I try to support companies that employ Americans & manufacture here. After getting it, loved it! My first was a lightly used Atom. Absolutely love it! Excellent slicer & slim profile. It gets the jobs done that I need done. I solved your issue with the holding comfort with contoured scales. The flat scales ARE a bad thing and are annoying but I got both flat and contoured scales on my Atom. BIG difference. Then I got my Newtron 2. LOVE IT! Basically identical except the size of the Atom. Another thing I dig about TRM knives is the amount of things u can modify on them. Soooo many different scales of different materials and shapes! They also sell gaskets making the stud more deploy friendly! So, aside from performance, accessories, and the other things I mentioned...I LOVE THE customer service! They go above and beyond to help you and I've even seen cases where someone lost thier knife and they actually replaced it. I have never meet a nicer set of company owners...in ANY consumer product field! U touched on the price, my opinion is its not bad and on par with the quality. I also factor in that they make thier products HERE & are dedicated to giving thier employees great wages. So the price is more than right imo. They could easily take the design and make it in china for pennies on the dollar and lower the prices drastically but they won't and im glad they won't! Sorry for the long response. New subscriber here!
How many points taken off for the carbon fiber scales that you chose, with lots of alternatives available? I think you mentioned it in three of your five categories at least. Tip too pointy? And lol at your value rating. For these materials with this fit and finish from a small operation with great customer service is cheap and you know it. Manufactured salty clickbait review. I'm embarrassed I fell for it.
I carry an atom as my main edc and love it. I will admit that I’m from Massachusetts and love that I can carry a knife made in my state and made by a company with wonderful customer service. I do, however, think that the atom and neutron are some of the most overrated knives on the market. This is not because they aren’t wonderful (as I feel that they are amazing knives) but I 100% agree that TH-cam influencers drove the popularity of the knife up to a large extent.
I like your video and agree with several of your ideas. I think the knife collecting world is somewhat fad oriented and keeps going in cycles. i remember when there was no online community or shopping and most people carried 'gent's knives'; a buck 110 was a large pocket knife and would raise eyebrows. Being honest with myself about expensive knives I have found that there is actually little cutting that I 'need' to do on a daily basis. I used to have a small schrade knife that met most daily needs and a Delica that I carried less because it was bigger. Your needs may vary esp. depending on your job. I use a utility knife for boxes. Anyway having owned hundreds of knives I find what i like is mostly personal tastes in materials design, looks etc. I wound up liking Seki City knives a lot. Things are worth what I will pay on a scale of utility vs novelty. I also like the feeling of having even a small weapon for self defense although I would prob. never use a knife in reality. It's hard for me to pay over 200 for a cutting tool unless I'm reselling it; what if it gets scratched?
Thanks. I agree, $25.00 knife will open a box the same as a $500 knife. But that is not really the point. There is a collectibility to these knives as well as utility. I liked what you said about the Seki City knives. I have a video planned on them this year.
If you just need "A knife" then go ahead and buy the dividend. The Neutron and other TRM knives are indeed worth the extra coin. They are rare, different, effective cutters. A Kershaw dividend is a great knife, but nowhere near the TRM. The feeling I get from acquiring one is not the same as a Kershaw. TRM knives are special. Kershaw are great mass-produced tools. Resale on these is amazing. Because they are rare, they will most likely appreciate in value. You can't say that for the "stamp-it-out" Kershaw. This is more of an art piece, with titanium liners, sexy and mostly bare blade, and very high quality scales. Some might say why would you buy this and not use it, but then again doing just that might be good financial advice! These knives are for collectors and knife nerds and we know it.
The dividend isn't even close to a TRM. By your logic, no one should by a ZT either when Kershaw makes a cheaper version of nearly every knife. Its not about being on a bandwagon. I think the dividend is a great knife and may be a little stronger built but I wouldn't use either of those for that hard of use anyway. I own Kershaw, ZT and TRM. In my opinion, you are comparing apples and oranges
Alot of people like TRM and the Neutron. And I admitted in the video, it is a very good knife. But, I did not think the knife was worth the price and I think the wait list on this knife is F'N ridiculous. But that's my opinion and part of the theme to that video was that people can have different opinions about that knife. Thanks for the comment.
@@bladeinsider8997 I dont think anyone likes the wait. But that's part of the knife. Itd not like the dividend being cranked out of a factory where each individual knife is passed through actual hands that inspect it throughout the process. The knife is framed in titanium not steel or aluminum. There are knives from spyderco that are comparable in price that are g10 steel and s30v or s35v. TRM uses a nicely heat treated 20cv. And it does have a thin blade but 20cv can take a beating. Check the video where the guy tried to break an 0055. So considering premium frame material is titanium, the scales are better than g10, and using premium super steel I would say the value is there. Yes, thats my opinion, but the points you made against it weren't portrayed against the dividend or other production knives that are around the same price range. If they amped up production too much the quality control would go down. I think they would prefer to grow production a rate that they can keep their quality control up to their expectations. Because opinion about anything else set aside, there is absolutely no comparison in the fit and finish of a Kershaw next to any TRM
I own all the knives in this video and dozens more. The video ignores the reality that people that purchase these kind of knives have a passion for knives and typically own more knives than they could ever use in 10 lifetimes. We have different criteria for knife purchases than folks that are happy to buy a knife at a gas station or Walmart. If you are not into knives as a hobby then don't spend more than $50 on a knife at most, ever. If you are into knives then everything in this video is clearly irrelevant. With a name like blade insider you must know this and are presumably just trying to stir up some TH-cam drama because views and comments. Will buy every knife in the trm range - great value, great knives, great people. Also bought collections of Spyderco, CS, Kershaw, CRKT........
You forgot a couple things, hot spot at the end of the scales because they didn't bother to round the ends and the thumb studs murder your thumbs after any long period of use. But you're right about Shabazz, ain't trusting him anymore.
I don't know man, seems a lot like personal preference. Also, if you got the neutron 2 in micarta instead of carbon fiber, a lot of your nit-picks would not be valid. Seems like you picked the wrong material handle for your personal preference. I would agree, however on the price and availability concerns. This is a smaller American manufacturer and not mass produced however, so a higher price and lower availability is somewhat understandable. The demand seems to be there, so if people are willing to pay it, I guess they priced them right. It is not really my cup of tea either at that price, but seems like a really nice blade.
I agree with you on this and other items that are basically are made "Trendy" do to a particular reviews. I was interested at first and as soon as I signed up for Facebook notifications my phone was blowing up. I had to turn off the notifications because it was excessive. I can only truly describe it like a bunch of preteen girls trying to get their sold out boy band tickets. I will pass on these for now. I recently have made it more important to buy us manufactured products. I thought it would be nice to try a TRM but there are others that are as good or better IMO so that is my take on situations like this and instead of stressing about a particular knife focus on something else that is easier to aquire. BTW I really enjoy your channel and have subscribed.
No doubt it’s a good knife but way too much hype about certain knives on YT..Some knives will give up ergos for ease of carry. I like my Spyderco Chapparel Raffir Noble (much cheaper) but it suffers from the same problem, probably worse. I’m a city guy but let’s face it, most of us don’t use our knives hard. 95% of knives I see on big YT sales are like new. If I had a job where I was cutting cardboard all day, I’d be using a box cutter and not a $300 MT Socom Elite. What drives me nuts is many knife people look at steel type before anything. I always hear they ‘want to try out a certain steel’. WTF does that even mean ? Design, ergos, lock type, quality, overall F&F etc come way before steel type for me. Also, fully stainless but I do own a few that are not. I have many high end steels (20CV, ZDP189, Elmax, M390, CTSXHP, M4 etc) but on good knives..The steel type hasn’t made my life any better/easier. I’m still fine with VG10, N690 etc on quality knives. But, I’m more careful what I buy now due to resale value. The availability thing just pisses me off. I’ve stopped chasing sprints or any other knife around a long time ago.
Steel type is important when collecting knives. But a good mid-grade steel works just fine. That's why I compare most knife steels to VG-10. Because I don't think people realize that is a really good all around knife steel.
Its funny how I see these guys on the gram and youtube changing scales and buy exclusively Higher end blade steels and change out the hardware and dont even use the knife. They carry a second knife(beater) to do work with... just silliness going on in this community
I feel that it was deserving of knife of the year . I don't understand you saying that it was slippery and complaining about the edge hurting your hand. But hand strength does vary . The atom did change the grip a little . Great company, great product great warrantee. It's one of the best made usa knives going . As a business man I understand that they have have contracts to make parts . It might a large portion of their income . One other thing 20cv steel is tough stuff . I don't think that tip is fragile at all. Only reeve makes a better made knife
Thanks for the comment. I agree that 20CV is a great steel. I just have a fear with knifes that come to a pointy end. And in the video, I mentioned that they had great customer service. The carbon fiber was slippery and not the best. In the Neutron 2.0, they do offer a more textured carbon fiber that may cure this. The thinness of the scales leads to it having sharper edges on the scales than other knives. Everybody has an opinion, I think the Neutron is a good knife. It's thin, light and slicey. It's very pocketable. But I don't agree with other reviewers that it was the knife of the year. Especially for the price. I think the role of you tube and the shortages in producing the knife that led to its cult like status.
@@bladeinsider8997 I believe you should try a 940. I don't think that the tip is fragile on them .Another is the Manix2. Another I think is worth a try is the Ritter Hogue. It's 20cv and has a somewhat improved lock over the standard Benchmade.
over priced! the secondary market lends to price gouging via limited factory drops and inflated pricing off face book and e bay biding frenzy .Quality is excellent as is customer service. The hype from product reviewers fuels the buying dynamic. The Face book group TRM (TiCOONS Really Matter) is a group that embellishes the product infatuation and interacts on with the owner making this a marketing success. If supply ever meets or exceeds demand the hope would be to continue with brand loyalty.
Thanks for this thoughtful video - subscribed. Neutron is a good knife but not worth clicking on refresh for *hours* to try to get in on a drop. What's your time worth? This one is costing you $200 + X hours of time. Get a Sebenza instead. Yes, it's more expensive but usually readily available, better built, will be supported for and last you a lifetime.
awesome video... I agree with your assessments
Great video! Stumbled upon this and happy I did
Glad you enjoyed it!

I have a couple of 940 and I love those knives. I also did a video on the Mannix. I have not picked up a Houge yet, but maybe this month?
@@bladeinsider8997 I beleive they are a buy. I bought the small one , should gotten the large.
@@garyjacobs2789 I have both sizes...and both sizes of the Griptilian....and can tell you that Ritter is a way better knife for sure.
They're so many excellent knives for 100 or less. The fact that it's hard to get really drives up the price.
I agree. Good knife at $125.00.
Dumb words here. You can't offer a heat treat like this on 20cv for a small volume manufacturer for that cheap. Use common sense.
@@tacticalcenter8658 thank you vault of knowledge forgive the dumb words
over priced! the secondary market lends to price gouging via limited factory drops and inflated pricing off face book and e bay biding frenzy .Quality is excellent as is customer service.
Totally agree
Best video yet BI....and sick burn RW.
Thanks.
Thanks for the kind words.
Idk, I scored one on the first try and I spent like 10min tops refreshing the site.
