I feel like you can tell how a skater will do based on their face before the performance. Irina and Sasha both looked tense before they skated, but Shizuka looked calm throughout and like she was enjoying herself on the ice.
I felt really bad for her when she fell on the loop, as it was ALWAYS her money jump! This was the only time I'd ever seen her miss a solo triple loop in her long, illustrious career... She skated internationally on the senior level from 1995 to 2006, with this being her final competition. Looking at her overall career, it was especially impressive that she was able to recover physically after her MAJOR 2003 illness when she fairly won the World title in 2005. She even did the hardest triple-triple at that comp.. She didn't deserve any higher than bronze here with this skate, but still a wonderful skater to remember.
Is it just me, or did all the skaters in 2006 do the spiral at 3:53? And absolutely nobody except maybe Sasha Cohen actually made it look good? Such an awkward-looking move, why would anyone do it.
The same story with the spins. It wad hard to fulfill the requirements of the new scoring system, even Irina struggled. And she's always been a great spinner.
This was an odd four years in terms of ISU requirements. They needed a way to codify the spiral and make it a separator, so they required everyone to do it and included criteria for change of edge and position. So at this Olympics, it was spiral mania, but in the next rule update the spiral requirement disappeared and you never see huge spiral sequences anymore in competitive programs. A shame as they’re one of the most beautiful parts of figure skating.
She actually had excellent short programs that were lovely to watch at both the 2002 and 2006 Olympics, but both of her longs were sloppy and miserable to watch. Kinda of a shame, but I was glad when it was all over that she only matched Michelle Kwan's record at the Olympics - rather than exceeded it.
@@lflagr I agree with you about 2005 - she was fantastic. It kind of surprised me too, but I never felt she was such a great performer with the exception of nice shorts at the Olympics (02, 06) and Worlds (00) and when she won the Grand Prix with two triple triples. In 2002 when she won the Worlds it wasn't that great of a performance actually, so it was a shock to see her do so well in 2005.
It's hard to believe that the Triple Loop was her downfall in these games because that was always her best jump. 0:19 to 0:21, Irina may think that, but Sarah Hughes deserved to win. Irina didn't deserve Gold back then because she messed up her landing on the Triple Flip and she didn't perform the two triple-triple combinations she had planned that night.
Gold? She should have had bronze in Salt Lake. Her performances there were a mess. I much preferred these two programs, even if this long was awful. She should have used her 2005 lp here - that was magic.
Take the jumps out of her and there is not much left. She could spin, but there was no elegance. Her skating was always sloppy, disjointed. Here the choreography was off the music. Presentation was really poor. Shizuoka Arakawa had brilliant skating skills, she was musical and when she saw that Sacha Cohen had collapsed, she skated clean and solid. I still watch her program to this day and it gives me chills.
О какой заслуженной победе идёт речь))) сплошные недокруты и детское катание Хьюс и не держала ось. Вы я смотрю спец в фигурном катании. Не позорьтесь. Америка украла золото у России.
And Michelle Kwan should be win the 98 Olympics. Tara's artistry was far from Michelle's. Tara's flip and lutz would be called out for under rotation today.
Irina threw her bronze medal in a trash can immediately after the medal ceremony. According to John Zimmerman, who witnessed the incident, Irina was disgusted with the color of bronze.
@@mikeg8375 Well Irina was severely underscored in the SP (by 4-5 points compared to season best), and according to her they knew she could not win anyway cause Russia couldn't win in all 4 disciplines, they had to give one to somebody else.
@@simtopia2334 Even if Irina had scored 4-5 points higher in short program she would not have beaten Arakawa with this weak free skate. She would not have deserved to either... But had she skated this free skate to her capability, she still could have won. So I am not sure what your point is trying to prove.
@@mikeg4576 That is all true, except the free skate part, i don't think we would know, probably it would have been another silver for Irina even with a clean free skate given the low GOE in the short. The "Silver then Bronze" curse was passed from Kwan onto Slutskaya.
To whom was it passed from Slutskaya?
That's not fair - cause Irina actually deserved Silver then Bronze.
