pay has not gone up because they let illegals in, willing to work for 5 bucks an hour. in 1980, you could be a JANITOR, and pay rent. now you gotta be a janitor AND put in 20 hours at walmart, for the same pay. on top of that, all the illegals will undercut and be willing to work cheaper than any american. so now, jobs 'americans did not want [before 1990]' go to illegals. hate to tell the media, in 1970, janitors, apple pickers, maids, barbacks, orange pickers, etc all were americans.
Wojak Feels one county over from Sacramento. I rented an apartment in 2001 for 550 I moved. In 2009 that same apartment was 850, I moved. That same place is 1,650 in 2019.
This is one of the most disgusting things going on in our society today. When i was growing up, even addicts that worked an honest 40 hr a week tax paying job could afford some kind of apt or at the very least a furnished room or kitchenette. And stop saying that it's addicts and alcoholics fault when back then although they had their addiction, they still lived some semblance of a normal life and even looked like your average next door neighbor. The only homeless i saw around were those with family problems or other issues and occasional hobos in search of a drink. My father was a mere laborer in a factory and we lived in a nice clean apt, bills always paid, and never went without food. At the end of the month he even had enough to treat us to a movie or some Chinese takeout. Unbelievably, he even put a few dollars away in the bank. So clearly the problem goes beyond alcoholism, addiction, mental health, and whatnot. Right now there are homeless people who have none of these problems yet can't even afford a hole in a wall but are so ashamed and prideful they keep to themselves and do their best not to advertise their homelessness. Wake up and start to see the real root of our problems because things are going to get worse before they get better.
I traveled to Asia and did not see homeless people. Why? Because in third world countries, what I saw instead were communities of people who are permitted to salvage used - discarded materials such as corrugated metal or pieces of plywood and tarps and cobble togather their own hovels without permits on government land that is not being used. They are allowed to carve out their own little niches where they exist and appear to cooperate with each other keeping things somewhat orderly . Not here though.
In many parts of Asia outside of the bigger cities people can still find affordable housing. I live in Hanoi Vietnam and pay 225 dollars to rent a room in a house with my friend and his family. If I wanted I could find my own room for 200 dollars or many times schools will pay you and give u affordable housing as well. Now the US is in the middle of a crisis and isn't prepared for it. Many people are struggling just for a basic roof over their head.
@@dennissaunders5247 Philippines. Noticed all over Cebu that poor people apparently are allowed to cobble together whatever makeshift shelters they can from various materials under bridges along waterways, railroad tracks and other public lands. No officials coming around and tearing down their hovels / forcing them to leave. Yes there are poor people on the streets, but any who can manage to scare up materials and build their shacks, are left alone by officials. (Unlike here in the west)
Difference is the "American" homeless can easily find a job where they ignore any past criminal charges, but they decide to stay on the streets doing drugs. So the American wants to not be homeless, and they have all the possibilities to do so, but they don't want to WORK. Any illegal immigrant comes to the US, not to do drugs or live off food stamps, but to work.
Terry Bardy Sadly, this is true but the reason why these “Illegals” hey ahead unlike us Americans is because they learn the system and stick together. They share information, they don’t hate on one another and this takes place long before they even enter the United States. If only we were as smart. They have tugged on our heart strings for far too long. Like I said in my other post above Americans need to become more creative and take risk. I can’t think of anything more risky than living out in the open around near drug infestation and waiting on a miracle. I can give a myriad of ideas for those in these circumstances to get out of them if they want to. Will it be easy ??? Not at all. Comfortable ??? No. But certainly better crying about help that may come too late is certainly not a better option. I say these things with love not judgement.
@@laidback20 Earl Frazier which one of the homeless interviewed said that? I'm super curious how you came to that conclusion watching the same exact video I did. I heard substance abuse. And I heard mental illness. But not a single one of the homeless said high rents. And even more importantly, if you know how TV and film works, you know what isn't said is more important than the footage they edited together of what they did say. If it was rents that would have been edited in there so well that it was clear these people were economic victims forced to the streets because of an insufficient income. But this video couldn't even find one homeless person who said that. And again, if you know anything about TV and film, you know that they interview several, and even dozens of people and then take the footage from the interviews that best reflect the story being told. So quit pushing the reason you want it to be, and start listening to the real reason these people are on the streets so that we can start finding actual solutions
@@chrisparkhurst5158 if they want to not claim that people are not being forced out of their apartments and people are in denial that's on them. The facts are that people are being issued no fault evictions. Senior citizens are told to vacate along with entire families. Homelessness has always been here. Drug abuse and alcohol abuse has always been here. More and more people that work are forced out of their homes. Ca. ha enacted rent Controls to keep people from exorbitant rent hikes. Some apartments are sold and the entire tenants are being evicted. People are on tv crying because they have nowhere to go. They're not drug addicts and no one should suggest that the reason all of these people are homeless is because they're addicts. People move into another area with deeper pockets and they're being accommodated at other people's expense.
@@laidback20 You are describing my exact and current circumstances: apartment building sold, all tenants received 60 day vacate notice bc "the new owners are excited to start extension renovations!" The no cause evictions is how landlords will work around the new rent increase law, it's BS. I'm FT employed, not an addict, no subsidized benefits, model tenant. The housing displacement in Sac (and other places) is disgusting, as well as these politicians rhetoric on the subject.
What a shame! So many people in this country that came over never worked in their whole life but yet they are being provided with a place to live, food and health care. What a sad sad world.
What kind of monster are you? You don't want people to have a roof over their head? That's indirect violence, if I've ever seen it. As someone who has worked, and been homeless in Sacramento, I can tell you most of these homeless people do not have EBT, or healthcare, or, half the time, even a legal ID. Even if you're getting free food at churches and FNB trucks, you have to walk all the way across town and back for one meal. Have some compassion for your fellow human beings
Also, most homeless people in Sacramento come from the greater Sacramento area or in the counties around it. I have met homeless people from out of state but they're not as common as homebums, as you would expect.
I left Sacramento in 2007 and didn't realize how bad it had become. This is a huge embarrassment on a national level. Sacramento isn't alone. Advocate for affordable housing.
I LOVE how homeless people get to have dogs, but I can't have one because I work too many hours and am not ok with leaving a dog unattended while I work 12 plus hours.
They talk about upwards of $40 million dollars for the homeless, but exactly how is this money spent on them? You could essentially give each one a check for $10,0000 and still have money leftover, and then they have a real chance at turning their life around. They could get a rental, some new clothes, plenty of food, and clean up enough to go job hunting to maintain a standard of life.
The blue filter makes it look colder than it actually is in Sac. Yes, it does get cold but seldom below freezing. And the rest of the year the temp is great or hotter than 100 degrees cuz of the California sun. But this is a tremendous problem that kinda spilled over from SF and CA being so expensive in general. I hope we can pass legislation to stop this in its track before it becomes exponentially worse.
I remember my first one bedroom apartment in 2010 On Marconi ave. In Sacramento I was a single working mother. Rent was $500. No credit checks, I brought the manager the money and she gave me the keys. Soon after that things changed and then rent has been rising since and you have to have excellent credit and make 3 times rent. That same one bedroom apartment is $1,500. Now but our wages haven’t gone up to match. It use to be more of the quote unquote typical homeless, the addicts and mentally ill but now it is working people, families with children. I don’t know how our mayor and governor can sleep at night knowing there are children and elderly without food and a place to sleep in their city. Why affordable housing isn’t being built by the masses is beyond me.
Every year the USA LEGALLY immigrates millions upon millions of the “poorest of the poor” into the country. How about a complete moratorium on immigration so we can start helping the US citizens who already live here?
They have no money and cops give them tickets. Cops can take them to jail feed them there. US government has to solve this problem. At least provide them a shelter so they can have places to live.
Note to the homeless drug addicts get off drugs so people want to help you and clean up after yourselves plz! Stop acting like a victim! Be accountable!
I understand what that woman was talking about. I was homeless for close to a year and I know how difficult it is to live among citizens of Sacramento and walk by you and pretend you are not there or invisible. I worked for a shelter and many homeless didn't want any responsibility of a job, paying rent and other bills, and preferred to stay homeless.
Because once you're down there its like being in a pit, also many are in debt and that job would mean losing more than half the paycheck to taxes and debt. Maybe some sort of debt forgiveness and/or a break on taxes for a few years while they get back on their feet, idk
There are lots of alcoholics who have housing. Alcoholism is only one problem. If there was cheap housing, even the alcoholics could be off the streets.
These people aren't homeless because of the housing crisis. They are homeless because of untreated mental illness and drug addiction. No one wants to criminalize the homeless but when they trash everywhere they go, damage the levees, and start fires the general public gets sick of it. We need to bring back institutionalization and mandatory treatment on people that can't function in society and need help.
I'm working and rent is too high and we are losing our apartment. I have no mental issues. The o es that are on the street that you see are on dope. There are plenty of normal looking people sleeping in their cars.

Bay area peeps are taking our homes and clogging our roadways! -Sac residents. But in all seriousness, you've got housing ordinances over there that prevent the building of multi story structures so the view of the bay could be preserved for those affluent enough to own property there. In the mean time here we are competing against Silicon Valley pay checks and foreign investors paying cash. If you're a veteran don't even think of bringing your POS VA loan to the bargaining table. Sellers will always avoid these because of the extra hoops they have to jump through. Either that or be ready to pay way above market value. Thank you for your service indeed...
Sacramento is burning in flames 🔥 I remember Kst mall use to be active. Downtown Sacramento use to be alive. Now there is a dark cloud over Sacramento. Sacramento has lost its titled of being THE CAPITAL OF CALIFORNIA.
3/4 of the people should be in live-in mental facilities. We allowed the government to put all those poor sick people on the street with no place to go. Did they think closing the hospitals would erase the mental illness? This is inhumane!
Brother, the mayors salary wouldn't be nearly enough to even put a dent in the problem...The federal government funding is the biggest potential source of help and it needs to be increased on an exponential level, in my opinion. While i don't know all the facts, my guess is the federal government has enough money to fix the problem, but they won't...but more than money, we need faith in God to sustain our needs so that we can love and serve each other - God will meet all of our needs one way or another, whether it be through increased funding or faith based organizations or people of faith doing what they can to help...Many blessings to you
The candidates in the next presidential election do not talk about this why not ! A little bit of the war funds to fund idiot wars, just a fraction would address this problem; but when you work in live in a neoliberal society of rent seeking and extraction it will just become a bigger problem! The problem is here because you do not have federal governments spending into the economy on things that matter!
There are so many who have serious mental illness. I see them everyday. The talkers or screamers. These people need immediate attention. Psychiatric care. Meds. Then there are people like this woman who need shelter and food. There are very large open spaces in this video that could be managed by the city. Micro apts. Box car apts. Small geodesic domes. This area is just north of downtown. Food wagons could be brought in daily with free food. There are no grocery stores in this area. Transportation could be provided. Free. Near loaves and fishes too.

Lifelong Sacramento resident here, while many homeless people are simply just down on their luck and are very kind and respect full, the majority of what I see doesn’t agree with that. These homeless people create little tent cities and absolutely trashed the area. The Amount of trash they leave around their areas is absolutely unacceptable. If you drive along I 80, 50, and I five, you’ll just see what appears to be landfills everywhere. Many of these people have absolutely no respect for where they are staying and will literally ruin an area
I know people that can't find affordable housing. People that lived in apartments for years received 60 days notices to vacate. A lot of them have no place to go. Not enought affordable housing. That may or said 100 beds but that's only a trickle of what's needed. Democrats aren't really trying to fix this problem in Ca. and the effects are devasting. It's craziness. They make a big scene about vaccinations and leave all of these people without shelter? What diseases can come from this? Rodents multiplying wherever there's homeless people. They tell Trump how to run the country but they can't do much about the homeless problem. They need to solve this problem that they seem to do a lot of talk and very little action. If the will is there, the means will be there.
So if you're homeless, don't work and all your valuables are in a shopping cart- why do these idiot cops ticket them? If I have nothing, that means I can give you nothing.
WHO who!! Who is homeless and who is homeFREE is question number 1. HomeFREE people, they don’t want a house/apt so They CHOOSE to live in a van/RV. Homeless people due to lack of money WANT a house/ apt to live in but can’t afford it. State government needs to find affordable housing for people on drugs, mental illness, disable., seniors and low income people . For homefree people, government need to set aside safe overnight parking spaces

pay has not gone up because they let illegals in, willing to work for 5 bucks an hour. in 1980, you could be a JANITOR, and pay rent. now you gotta be a janitor AND put in 20 hours at walmart, for the same pay. on top of that, all the illegals will undercut and be willing to work cheaper than any american. so now, jobs 'americans did not want [before 1990]' go to illegals. hate to tell the media, in 1970, janitors, apple pickers, maids, barbacks, orange pickers, etc all were americans.
Wojak Feels one county over from Sacramento. I rented an apartment in 2001 for 550 I moved. In 2009 that same apartment was 850, I moved. That same place is 1,650 in 2019.
Reduce housing costs for the love of God!!
They ONLY need drogs, rent is not budgeted!
The Rich won't allow that.
I grew up in Sacto and now live in the foothills and when I visit sacto it is hard to believe it is the same place I grew up....
A well-done, beautifully shot segment on an important local issue. I would like to see you do an even more -in-depth follow up piece.
I've been to Sacramento many times, it is getting worst & worst now and the homeless is spreading from downtown to South Sac.
lol, good, sounds like it is spreading BOTH directions.
Scumento!
Here in North Sacramento county it's been horrible! North Highlands is beyond bad.
@@MsMst12 your absent father must be from SACRAMENTO!!
David Bowman i can tell you are from Scumento!
Good point! Are WE becoming a 3rd world country? It kinda looks like it...
Starting to look like India
Where in asia were you at
@@dennissaunders5247 Philippines.
Yet they try to shelter people who are from different countries and can't even take care of the homeless they have.
People from the bay area are moving to my hometown in San Joaquin County and driving prices up and causing alot of people to live in cars.
Sacramento should be ashamed of itself letting the rent get so freaking high. After 40 yrs we just moved to Ohio in Feb 2019.
How do you like Ohio.?
Ohio sucks and the pay wage is trash
none of these people on the streets said that rent costs was the reason y they were on the streets
The reason that a lot of them are on the streets because of the influx of people from the Bay Area. They don't have affordable housing.
TENT IS UNNAFORDABLE and you know it. No way on minimum wage can anyone afford rent
Advocate for affordable housing.
i can understand getting rid of some of these encampments
a lot of the homless turn there camps in to garbage dumps
I LOVE how homeless people get to have dogs, but I can't have one because I work too many hours and am not ok with leaving a dog unattended while I work 12 plus hours.
Thank you people for your effort. Thank you, Joe, for your effort.
Sad, I wish I could build all the homeless a home to live
How many folks are dealing with substance abuse?
Many. But mental illness issues are far more.

There is no real help unless u get lucky people don't know how hard it can be to be homeless with nothing
There is way more than 3600 homeless around sac
I know all those locations, just moved here a few years ago, there are STILL so many homeless EVERYWHERE it’s so sad
This is getting worse by the minute. Stockton is also in crisis
I think turning motels into permanent housing is a great idea! I am homeless and am in one right now cause of covid!
That is fine to advocate for the homeless, but when the homeless create an extreme health hazard to the entire public, then we have a serious problem.
Every year the USA LEGALLY immigrates millions upon millions of the “poorest of the poor” into the country. How about a complete moratorium on immigration so we can start helping the US citizens who already live here?
This issue has not been resolved getting worse? Why?
Because they really don't care!
Use the closed Correctional Facilities to house the homeless
I understand what that woman was talking about. I was homeless for close to a year and I know how difficult it is to live among citizens of Sacramento and walk by you and pretend you are not there or invisible. I worked for a shelter and many homeless didn't want any responsibility of a job, paying rent and other bills, and preferred to stay homeless.
Because once you're down there its like being in a pit, also many are in debt and that job would mean losing more than half the paycheck to taxes and debt. Maybe some sort of debt forgiveness and/or a break on taxes for a few years while they get back on their feet, idk
My friend lost his job then his house than his car then he killed himself cause he said He couldn’t live like this

Its not how much you care that will solve the problem, its the laws you lay down and enforce that solves the problem.
I hate seeing this happen to my city and my fellow humans. Man what a moral and sociological issue, and I don't even know where to begin to help ...
so alcohol not high rents or available housing is the problem
There are lots of alcoholics who have housing. Alcoholism is only one problem. If there was cheap housing, even the alcoholics could be off the streets.
@@bookmagicroe9553 no they wouldn't. Addicts can't and won't make responsible choices and pay their bills they are incapable of that.

The mayor of sac needs to take a pay cut and donate some of his extremely high salary
The problem is here because you do not have federal governments spending into the economy on things that matter!
a vehicle can really help if your homeless, unfortunately after this upgrade people and laws try to make that harder and harder
Free. Soon , commifornia will look like Alexandria Egypt. One of the poorest cities I’ve ever been in.
I’m sure trash is the last thing on their mind I mean is the city going to provide trash bins?
