    It's hard to explain my respect and admiration for Conan O'Obrien. How he survived and blossomed after the Tonight Show fiasco is one of television's greatest comebacks ever.

    What a fantastic interview. This is a side of Conan I didn't know existed; and Guralnick, of course, provided so much insight into Elvis Presley. For any Elvis fan, this is more than worth your time.

    Nice to come across this in the feed. Great interview filled with insightful tidbits. Elvis and Sam Phillips flung the doors wide open. I read Last Train to Memphis last summer and need to read the second volume Careless Love. I think knowing what's to come makes it a hard read. He truly burned himself out. The sad fact is you can't save one from oneself. He had so much left to offer and it would have been fantastic to see his continued accomplishments. Elvis' voice is truly one for the ages. We saw him at the Astrodome when I was little. He was magnetic despite the cavernous size of the Astrodome. I'm glad I was on the planet during Elvis' lifetime.

    I find it interesting that Conan mentions that he had once interviewed David Halberstam and mentioned Halberstam's book, "The Fifties" in this interview at the 4:07 mark. If you don't know who David Halberstam is, he is a Pulitzer Prize winning writer, reporter, journalist, author and historian who at one time wrote for The Tennessean newspaper in Nashville, TN and later wrote for The New York Times. I'd be curious to know if Conan knows that Elvis met David Halberstam on March 21, 1960 in Nashville while Halberstam was a reporter / writer for The Tennessean. There's a photo of the two of them together walking near the train that Elvis would leave on to head to Miami Beach, Florida to tape an ABC television special with Frank Sinatra, Nancy Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop. You also see Bitsy Mott in the photo as well. Elvis had just completed a recording session in Nashville the night before in which he recorded "Make Me Know It," "Soldier Boy," "Stuck On You," "Fame And Fortune," "A Mess Of Blues," and "It Feels So Right." I'd like to know if Halberstam ever mentioned to Conan that he had once met Elvis.

    Peter Guralnick is in my opinion without a doubt the gold standard in music-centric biographers. I have all of his books, among my approximately 150-book library of musician/band bios. His Elvis books have no agenda, but to give us a glimpse into and understanding of the artist and the boy/man. Peter is a brilliant and thorough writer. And Conan - What a great and insightful interview!

    The authorities might have wanted to put Elvis back in his box, but he was the expression of his times.
    When someone comes along and through their talent becomes the focal point of a generation, a figure that expresses the aspirations of an unheard segment of the population, that person becomes an unstoppable social force.
    That, in my opinion is why Elvis was drafted into the Army. Ricky Nelson wasn't drafted, Eddie Cochran wasn't drafted neither was Pat Boone or Buddy Holly or Chuck Berry. Only Elvis. They wanted him out of the way. It worked for a little while, but only until the Beatles and Stones were able to pick up where Elvis left off.

    I’m an Australian and renowned for my love of music and artists prior to my generation….which was ultimately the late 70s and 80s (being born in 1965). Among my favourite all time artists are Elvis, Cooke, Bobby Darin and Diamond. It’s also a fact that these artists don’t ‘fit into a box’, and connect through their voice on a level which is phenomenal. I’ve often wondered why we’ve never seen a photo of Elvis and Cooke together. In fact, the amount of footage of Sam Cooke available is dismal.
    Had Elvis ‘survived’ beyond 1977, I believe we’d have seen him produce more gospel/blues albums. I’ve read that he spent many evenings singing gospel in private and travelled with a gospel pianist.

Within the past week oft June 15th there had been Capital Cities, New Politics, Houndmouth, Jr Jr, some band that the lead singer of Spoon did, and that duo that Emily Deschanel is/was in. But maybe they filmed this three weeks or months prior. You know Marina and the Diamonds performed the month prior I'm gonna choose to believe he was talking about her

    L'intervista è molto interessante, per l'autorevolezza dell'intervistato e per la professionalità dell'intervistatore.Ho letto, naturalmente i due volumi di Guralnick e li sto rileggendo .Sono arrivata a metà del secondo. Come dice Conan non è facile comprendere a fondo tutto per i molti personaggi trattati, i dettagli minuziosi , e, mi perdoni l'autore, per le sue numerose e lunghe parentesi Vorrei pregare Vali-Tere e tutti quelli che se la sentono di tradurre questa intervista in italiano.Sarebbe una grande fatica , ma un'opera meritoria.Parlano molto in fretta e non ho potuto seguire tutti i loro discorsi. Una cosa so, con tutto il rispetto per Guralnick ,al cui confronto,pur avendo letto molto su Elvis & company,non sono nessuno, non condivido i suoi giudizi super positivii su l Colonello, seconda fase. Rese Elvis (e se steso) ricco e famoso ma gli impedì di realizzare i suoi sogn e realizzare i suoi nuovi obiettivi artisticii. Gli ha domandato Conan perchè Elvis fu così passivo e non impose la sua volontà, e ancora lui ha giustificato tutte le decisioni di Parker. Ma ,credo sia noto che negli ultimi anni Elvis non si fidava più di lui e aveva deciso di licenziarlo definitivamente nel mese di settembre. E lui morì in agosto..

    I think Conan kind of misses the whole idea of Elvis getting out of the army. The US government drafted Elvis because he was a threat to civilization; a white man singing black music, his pelvis, rock 'n roll recklessness, etc. The Elvis that came out of the army was a completely different person than the one who went in. He was sanitized, sanctified, his wings were clipped, and he was non-threatening. Elvis was a very complex human being: handsome, a good singer, stylish and with vision, and enough charisma for ten people. Elvis was the very first Rock Star, and he left an indelible mark on all who came after him, including the Beatles. But also, Elvis needed teams of songwriters and great musicians around him to be as good as he was (something the Beatles did not need--they were self contained: good players, great songwriters, attractive, stylish, funny, and full of youthful enthusiasm and charisma). Elvis getting drafted worked for the US government. He was completely defanged, and in a lot of ways he died a broken man. If the Establishment could have done that to the Beatles too they would have. Rock and Roll was very threatening.

    • @katgirlblue
      @katgirlblue 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Absolutely right, but it wasn't only the government that did it. "Colonel" Parker did way more damage to Elvis by sanitizing him almost to death. His goal was to make him a lasting entertainer that appealed to the parents as well as their teenagers, and why not include the little kids too. There's a reason his first gig after the army was with Frank Sinatra. Fortunately Elvis overcame that temporarily when he did the 68 special and went back to performing live. I wish he had stood up for himself more often and told Parker where to go.
