5 Steps to Design Your Van Build Layout
One of the first steps when thinking about turning a van in to a camper is coming up with the layout. In fact, this step needs to be considered before even buying a van. So today we are going to run through how we design our van layouts, whilst designing the layout for this very van.

I totally get your "planning in squares" its like the graph paper we used back in the old days of school. Great layout ideas, excited to see how different or close the final build is to your initial ideas. Have a helluva good time in Morocco, be safe. Love & light!

Gosh those tips were so useful! I think as well, don't go too fast, because most things you can adapt and their measurements affect the next thing you build. Probably nobody's van ends up the way they first planned! Thank you both xx

What about weight distribution across axles and payload ? What things weigh and where you put them affect braking steering, clutch burn out etc.

We're at this stage deciding a layout (although we'll need someone to build it for us).
I love the really practical and simple ways you've explained this. The squares make 100% sense simplistically, especially as I feared we'd need some special software to even start. You explained the additional space considerations really well too, like wheel arches. Nic, you sounds like such a pro at this. I remember seeing some of your early videos too and know you have loads of experience and confidence.

Hi Mark, thank you so much for your kind words. I'm so glad all of this made sense, sometimes it's hard to explain things without visuals but you definitely don't need any special software, but if you want to give it a go, Sketch Up is a free website that lets you draw 3D designs up 😊

Nic 😂 There are some standardised symbols for things in your layout- get yourself an architect’s pocket guide or something girl! Will make your life easier and your drawings more readable. Solid start and concepts for designing your layout though X
That would be lovely but probably too much for me to learn amongst building the van, creating these videos and running my business 😂. Plus, this shows you really don’t need any skills to build a van, I did my last van off a sketch I did on my phone notes 😂. Maybe one day though and you’ll be oh so impressed 🫶🏼
have you ever thought about putting you plans out in a space out of the van and building a mock up out of cardboard boxes they do this when planning house extensions on tv programm i watch. would give you a picture of what your going to get and space.you could get dimetions of thing you would like to put in van build out box see out it looks plus it will save on money and mistakes dam i might build one woooooo.

Curious about your escape hatch assuming it's that rectangle in your other van. Have you tested escaping through it with people by age? I just know those who are not as agile if renting may have difficulty when climbing over a kitchen. This was fascinating to watch and informative.
Thank you so much 🙏🏼. Unfortunately we aren’t able to accommodate everyone, I wish we could but from our 4 years living in a van and never having an issue on the road, we felt like we could give a little on the escape hatch ☺️
Also think, what you will use most during every day. If you only use a bed 8 hrs day then it could be a murphy unit and fold away. But if you use the bed 12+ hrs day, then it should be fixed. etc etc etc Plus , where is the entertainment area ? if needed ?
As your talking about the W/C , did the Murphy shower not work ?? As for the skylight, go a marine shop, you'll be able to get a large sky light.
Absolutely! That’s why we didn’t have a shower in the build we live in as I never really used it in my first one 😆. But we want a wet room in this one, if it fits, as it’s for renting so would like it to be as little hassle as possible. I imagine not all renters will have experience in a van and there is already a lot to learn 😊
How do you deal with condensation?
Also heating? Some vehicles I have seen have small burners and a chimney out through the roof.
We will be going for a diesel heater in here 🤗. I knew I’d miss something important. Condensation is whole other topic but in my opinion it’s about good ventilation. It’s more than likely you’ll get some and for me it’s important that if I do it sticks on the windows as you can then gather it up in the morning. I don’t rec shaving foam on the windows or anything that stops it building up as if it is in the air it will find somewhere else to go like soft furnishings which then causes mold 🙃. Hope this helps but I will try cover it in more detail when it comes to ventilating the space 👍🏼

@@nicroams Had I seen you earlier I would have said hi. I had to get back to my car as the dogs were on their own and my pointer gets stressed if I disappear for too long. She's a rescue dog from Greece and was found abandoned with a broken leg. She's ok now but doesn't like being away from me. ( my wife passed away in August so now I take them every where).
