Hello, im mexican and i just found your channel. If you are still in México here are some advices: the "policia municipal", like the local police, HAS NOT the jurisdiction to stop any car or be around transit or traffic problems. You can be pulled over only by "policia de tránsito", "policia estatal", "federal de caminos" and "guardia nacional". They have the jurisdiction to stop you and get you a ticket, arrest you or take your car away, depending on the fault. The "policia municipal", the ones that stoped you, only control civil problems not related to cars or driving. What they did is illegal, unfortunatelly in México we have a lot of corrupt police that only want to scare people and ask for money to "let you go". They saw that you didnt scare and that you were willing to cooperate, thats why they "let you go". Simply there was no fault to persue. Only on the right line? Thats absurd. Another tip: If you get pulled over, ALWAYS check online the amount of money for the fault they give you, i know is kind of hard because it is in spanish but it will help you, information is power. Im telling you this because sometimes they show you like a $1000 ticket in their books or screens, and say: if you give me $500 now I let you go, and online you can find out that the ticket is for only $150 or so, sooo please be carefull and stay safe out there. (btw sorry if i get some words bad spell, im trying my best). Enjoy México!! There are lots of good people out, willing to give yoy a hand if you need. Somos más los buenos. Bienvenidos!! ❤
I remember you said in 2021 to bring copies of the docs. Good move! So glad that he let you go with a warning. With all that is going on in the world, I am so glad that you guys were able to avoid any further issue. My heart stopped when you put pulled over in title of video!
Just found your channel, and I'll probably start a binge watch. You seem like the kind of folks I could hang out with and enjoy. Like your work and sorry about the crossing. Good luck and best wishes on this trip!!
Wow sorry you had a rough start getting into Mexico. I was just there last month and I also crossed the Border at Mexicali East. Note i filled the form out online and printed it out so glad I did and when I go back again next year I’ll do the online form. I also caravan with 5 other vans and pretty sure we stayed in the middle lane driving out of Mexicali. So if I go back by myself next year will definitely be in the right lane.
Crazy that you had to go to another border crossing to get a FMM card. And to get pulled over! Omg! Glad everything worked out and you are on your way to an amazing time in Baja! Next time we are coming with you guys!
Right! Apparently they got FMM forms an hour or two later (someone messaged us on instagram saying they got through just fine), bad timing! That be so fun!
Omg I still cant believe they sent you to the other crossing ! We had to of crossed only a little after you guys and they had the papers! Hope the rest of Baja is treating you well and hopefully our paths will cross at some point !
We got the FMM online and it saved us a lot of back and forth at the border, but we have a wireless printer in the van to make copies and print documents. We were also pulled over in Mexicali for having our front wheels on the stop line. Same story, he’d follow us to the magistrate, blah, blah, $80 fine, blah, blah, supervisor coming. When we asked if we could pay the fine right there, he said yes, $40. When we offered $20, he said, “but there are two of us”. Clearly looking out for themselves. We protested that we were elderly and on a fixed income, he accepted $20 USD. Leaves a very bad taste, but we won’t let it spoil our trip and neither should you.
Bummer they were looking for a bribe. We were told to go to police station and pay the ticket… which we were ready to do…I think that’s why he just gave us the warning and didn’t want to waste time.
Your reflecting sunglasses were an issue back in the 80s. You would have been required to remove them while speaking to an Officer. Of course that was back when there were real laws and common sense!!!
I got pulled over just 1 mile from the border for having my dog in the passenger seat. I was frisked spread eagle out the back of my van and it was very traumatic. I produced a letter from Baja Bound Insurance in Spanish stating that I was not giving any money and I know the law. As soon as they read the letter, they said I could go. I am in Baja now, and met at least a dozen people pulled over for various reasons. It’s a shame the cops target Americans who are coming here to support the economy. Don’t let it spoil your trip . Baja is amazing!!!
Geesh so sorry to hear about that, thankfully our experience was relatively easy and low stress. It’s good to know what to do when you get pulled over 👍🏻 having that letter certainly helps!!!! Safe travels we love Baja!
That was a shake down from the police. Well, at least they tried. I’m glad you didn’t give them any money since that was the end goal of the STOP I’m from Argentina and this is very common practice. Have a good journey.
Wow, I just went exactly the same way in October and it couldn't have been smoother. So sorry you had so many challenges. I hope you got all your weird karma out of the way and have a fantastic time from here on. See ya next week! ¡Vaya con dios!
Well seems like it went better than the cross country trip, lol! Silver linnings. Seriously though, I am so scared to drive my van down to Mexico, but I want to so bad. I don't have a 4x4 though... I feel like I would get stuck and be by myself with no way out! I hope you guys have fun!
Not the ideal experience but it'll make you both even more seasoned travelers. I travel international all the time and you can only plan things things out to a certain degree. Heck, I was born and raised in Vietnam and I have issues sometimes still when I visit. Glad it worked out. Thanks for the video and insight. Have a safe and happy trip! P.s. I graduated nursing school recently and I'm seriously considering travel nursing. I've been watching you both for a while now and it'll be helpful if I decide to pick up the van life.

You experienced what is a routine occurrence in Mexico....A "Mexican Mordita" given by the Policia.... Welcome to Mexico!! You usually have to pay "dinero"on the spot or it's off to jail....😂
Oh geez. Like a dark cloud. He seemed professional. Crazy they almost made you go to the station. Glad that was only a warning. ‼️ Yikes I am sure it puts a damper on the day. Shake it off and have a cold beverage.
He was very kind and professional, you actually want to go to the station to pay the ticket that’s the process so you commit to it instead of doing any bribe or whatever. I said ok I’ll follow you without hesitation which is maybe why I got the warning? The officers were kind and respectable so cannot complain at all
@@MathersOnTheMap yeah i agree it’s probably a good thing to review the process. We drove in greece in crete and that was also an experience. Hahah and a lot of cars were manual. While I know i was rusty. People drive on the shoulder for some reason. Strange. Thats what makes the memories.
I live in the Phoenix area and my wife an I have had a home in Puerto Penasco for more than 10 years. The rules on the FMM's have changed a lot over the years and websites are never updated with current info. Every tourist entering Mexico is suppose to get an FMM, REGARDLESS of the number of days you are in the country. It is free if its issued for 7 days or less. Even if you got the FMM online, you would still need to get it stamped at the border so it doesn't save any time. This is assuming you didnt land on one of the many scam sites that offer them and overcharge you. If you ever get pulled over by mexican police, never volunteer anything and give them anything until they ask for it. If they are giving you a ticket for anything, never give them money on the street, always say, let's go to the station. Mexicali police are known for stopping americans for BS tickets and payoffs.
Appreciate the insight, good to know about FMM, that’s a great point you still have to get it stamped and it’s expensive now, $45! We handed over our photo copies of our licenses for that reason which the officer was ok with
@@MathersOnTheMap i think it may be more expensive because the exchange rate has moved against you and more in favor of Mexico since your last trip. They may have raised the fee too, but I would bet its more exchange rate related.
