In the winter of 1969, I was warming up for an upcoming set with Fast Eddy McNamara for a gig in the St. Mary’s Coffehouse in one of the practice rooms in the basement of the St. Mary’s College Moreau Center building. We were working out some numbers when a gentleman dressed in suit and tie heard Eddy’s banjo ( a 1928 Gibson Mastertone!) wailing and walked into our practice room. He heard us playing and since he was carrying a nylon string guitar, seemed to want to join in. HisnEnglish was nonexistent and my Spanish was of little use, so we tried communicating via music. We settled on 12 bar blues, and he enthusiastically joined in as he learned the idiom. Then he invited us upstairs to where he was the featured performer, one Carlos Montoya! He invited us to sit in the wings alongside his beautiful wife, who must have once been a flamenco dancer, because she could not keep her feet still during his performance. She was dressed in a long black dress, with black elbow length gloves and high heeled shoes/boots which tapped out the rhythms of his music. She was classically beautiful with arched eyebrows and perfectly applied makeup, and it was an experience I’ll never forget, teaching a world class musician an American musical idiom, the blues….
*THIS IS REAL FLAMENCO* ! Everyone else today is playing Fake Flamenco. Montoya, Sabicas are real. Paco Pena is close and very good, but not at this level.
To be fair, it's different Art. I love Mango, and I love Spicy Chicken.. but I don't compare them, they are both great at different times. Metal is great in soo many ways! Flamenco is equally great in many different ways! ( and in some similar ways! ) Partially subjective, I know! Peace and love to all the music fans. Life is just about being happy, while making others happy! Now it's time to get this concussion checked out! ahaha
That is an interesting combo. 520 P from Savarez and you can use the first string from D’Addario EJ49 to complete the set. Remarkably, most modern string makers now sell the equivalent- silver plated 6-4, carbon for 3 and 2 and a sweet nylon for first. Carlos used this combo to get his guitar to be sweet and bright. Those Marcelo and Arcángel guitars are dark and haunting, so he complemented this in making his preferred tone by making such string choices.
