One of the funniest lines I ever heard came from Tex. When Howard Cossell said he was going to stop doing boxing because of the Holmes - Cobb fight, Tex said, “if Howard would agree to stop doing football, I would fight Holmes again”.
I met the guy in Philly a few times, and with his stories he could put on a one-man show on Broadway. Favorite line (out of dozens): he says he was never knocked down in a boxing or kick-boxing match, but he was knocked out cold in a bar fight by a Mexican bantamweight. How? "Two of my friends were swinging him around by his ankles at the time."
A lot of boxers back then had amazing personalities… Great interviews. This is why he also made movies. Johnny was the absolutely greatest ever at bringing out the best from his guests, no matter who they were or what they did.

That's right. He was the Bounty Hunter in Raising Arizona with Nicolas Cage, and he always played a similar role in Jim Carrey's movie Ace Ventura Pet Detective.
A hidden gem of a movie. I have to watch it every time it comes on. Nicolas Cage as H.I. was great, I loved the fight in the trailer with John Goodman (Gale). When H.I. was about to strike him two handed from above and scraped his hands on the low roof and screamed in pain. LOL Or the line from William Forsyth (Etyl) "We released ourselves on our own recognizance" after him and Gale escaped prison. Eytl to elderly southern store keeper "Do these balloons blow up into funny shapes?" Storekeeper replies, "Well, no, unless round is funny." Was it his DipTet?
I remember he had one of the funniest lines when being interviewed by Joan Rivers. She asked him if he had any brothers and who was the biggest. He looked at her and said that would depend on where you measured us.

I remember watching an interview with Larry Holmes soon after the fight where the interviewer asked him "What was the biggest contributor to your victory?" and Holmes answered something like ... "The fact that Tex doesn't know how to box". He didn't mean it as an insult, he was pointing out that if Tex knew how to throw a punch as good as he could take one he'd have been unstoppable.

Howard somehow managed to be everywhere in sports coverage and loved to talk about Howard. Randall sounds too smart to listen to John Madden as well. Funny thing is; John Madden earned a Super Bowl Ring as HC of the Raiders. So how does someone that knowledgeable about (American) football manage to waste so much time talking about so little? I'll say this for Madden and others, I went from watching too much football to watching no sports at all. I should thank them.

I became acquainted with Randall when he was training/fighting in Springfield, MO over the course of several months of 1987. The hotel lounge (Merlins) of the Hilton he was staying in was my club of choice. He had seen me in the club several times, and eventually asked me about restaurants I liked in Springfield. Several nights later he asked if I would dance with his lady friend, as he was tired from training all day, and she was much younger, and ready to dance. The DJ at Merlin's spun the best dance songs. Randall was generous, witty, and one of the most intelligent athletes I've met in person. He was my hero before he started making hit movies.
I saw Tex Cobb at a dinner with Larry Holmes on video. Tex was very funny and had Larry laughing about everything that happened before, during and after the fight.

I remember working with this man. He "as big of a man as he was" was always so kind to everybody. It didn't matter what you position in life was, you placed everybody high up on a capital, as if he was waiting to learn from you and he would listen intently. Such a super kind man, and he truly enjoyed speaking with people, even people he did know, or people who didn't know him or of his various fighting events and types or movies he was involved in.. I have to mention this, If he was poor broke, and you all were at the chuck wagon line or today's as it is know, "The Roach Coach" for lunch, and you forgot your wallet, or were poor yourself, he would make an excuse for himself, and say, "Ah, I am just not in the mood to eat this stuff today, it is good stuff, but I have had it every day this month, I am gonna head back an heat up a frozen pizza" and you give you his $1.75 for get your food and drink. And you would never know that he would just skip his meal so you could eat. Now granted, $1.75 for food back then, was like $14 bucks today for lunch.. pending where you are at in the nation. He always had something not only soft or pleasant to say about any and all situations, but, would actually know of a story or experience that would be so perfectly fitting to help you see a positive in life that the person could relate to and you actually would feel up-lifted. He was natural at doing that. I wonder if there is a documentary of his life out there, as I think I would enjoy reading that. perhaps, maybe a documentary in the film format? Either way, I wonder if he still has an agent that would allow an old tier to have a chat with him. It is very likely that I wouldn't be remembered, as I really didn't have anything memorable to offer a man of such a high caliber of kindness, but, I would enjoy telling him, how much I always respected his kind nature to everybody. I can tell you, to see some of the TV and movie roles he would play, often times he would play the "bad guy or villain" and beings I knew how he was in real life, "A super nice guy" it was hard to watch those gigs...lol... He wouldn't punch a guy for no reason and then throw hi through the front window...lol.. Yes, I know, it is just acting.. but, just odd to see that portrayal from a nice guy. You know what, someone like him, it wouldn't shock me, if he might not remember your name, but, with a little bit of back story, from 40 plus years ago, that he would then say "OH YA, I remember you know" and then start rapping off the subject matters in which we had talked about and the days before, during and after.. He just seems like that is likely with his nature... ?
This guy is a complete stud. Humble, honest and genuinely talented in front of the camera. … watch “ Uncommon Valor.” If he was boxing in the first half of the last century … he would have earned a bunch of wins in the ring with his guts and jaw. As it is… he was never a quitter and would take a load of punishment just in principle. That alone is pretty scarce these days. I was in New York on business some years back and recognized him walking by and asked him if he was Mr. Cobb . He grinned that signature smile, stuck out his hand and said” hell no, I’m Randall. I am not a little guy ( 6’4” and about 240 at the time) but he had the hands of a gorilla and a handshake I will not forget. Everything about him exhumed power at that moment and a gentle good humor as well. A special man.
I never knew he was a boxer before an actor. The first time I saw him was in "Uncommon Valor" when I was little. He looked and sounded so much like my mom's brother that he was my instant favorite. I loved him in "Raising Arizona!" 😊

What a great interview. Tex was the real deal. Tough as leather and a huge heart to go with it.
Took a lot of control not to use his martial arts training but he took everything he dished out one tough guy
What a guest, what a host. Damn I miss them both.
Cobb is not dead. He's still here with the rest of us.
One of the funniest lines I ever heard came from Tex. When Howard Cossell said he was going to stop doing boxing because of the Holmes - Cobb fight, Tex said, “if Howard would agree to stop doing football, I would fight Holmes again”.
Hi George how are you doing😊
Damn it George she asked how are you doing? You have left her hanging for 11 days now. At least give her an I'm good or just good. Sorry Maria.
Well over a month now George.

Randall "Tex" Cob is Intelligent, Tuff as nails, Extremely talented and such a great sense of humor!
I've Always loved him! 😃 🙏
😂🤣
What a great story,love it.😂😂😂😂
i used to run into him (and his wife) at some bars or in the streets in philky center city. he so down to earth and funny. i wish him well
LoL
Lol
A lot of boxers back then had amazing personalities… Great interviews. This is why he also made movies. Johnny was the absolutely greatest ever at bringing out the best from his guests, no matter who they were or what they did.
Absolutely miss Johnny we need another one like him
Yes, agreed. But there really just aren't many, really any funny, nice midwesterners like John Carson (Nebraska) or Bob Newhart (here from Chicago ) in the entertainment world. I can't think of many/any now.
Holmes said no rematch because he threw everything at him and he just kept on coming.Hes gotta be one of the toughest men,if not the toughest man ever to lace up the gloves.A true gentleman
Agreed, and had he started boxing at a younger age, like 95% of other boxers, he would have been champion!
@@gregieboy Hes just a real man.He might have been a late bloomer. You never know in life but Mr. Cobb gave it his all.I have a lot of admiration for that
Seems like a great guy but he could have gone 100 rounds against Holmes and not won one of them.
@@johanberggren5844 The Holmes jab, there wasnt a lot of defence against that
Holmes paid attention to Apollo's trainer in Rocky II.
Tex Cobb's description, explanation is hysterical and so candid. I dig this guy and remember his classic acting job in Raising Arizona.
Thanks, I was trying to remember what movie that was.
That Sumbitch!!!
LOL
Or the line from William Forsyth (Etyl) "We released ourselves on our own recognizance" after him and Gale escaped prison.
Eytl to elderly southern store keeper "Do these balloons blow up into funny shapes?" Storekeeper replies, "Well, no, unless round is funny."
Was it his DipTet?
I remember he had one of the funniest lines when being interviewed by Joan Rivers. She asked him if he had any brothers and who was the biggest. He looked at her and said that would depend on where you measured us.
I gotta Google that interview!!
Cobb was also a heavyweight kick boxing champ. He is the best live interview character in boxing. The man has a great sense of humor.
Tex Cobb is a classic! He was great on this show!
He was in Raising Arizona with Nick Cage, I never knew he was a boxer, ...
He's actually got a great sense of humor.
He's able to laugh at himself and that is a good trait not many ppl have..
Good for him.!
Hi Frank how are you doing😊
You got flies!!
In truth, Tex Cob was one of the all around toughest guys you could ever hope to meet.
He’s a winner ! Anybody that can stand up to Larry Holmes is a winner
Tyson knocked his equilidrin off
@@dennisscott6501 Tyson vs Holmes in their primes would have been a great fight. Tyson still wins with a KO, but it would have been fun to watch.
@@davemccreary9184 At his best I have Holmes beating Tyson, he was just too good
@@davemccreary9184 Holmes was an absolute beast. Way past his prime in the Tyson fight. A great champion. I’m not sure Tyson with his limited skill set would have won it. Tysons brutality and aura of invincibility in his early days was his style. Opponents were beaten before the bell usually. It would have been a great fight for sure.
@@dennisscott6501 What's an "equilidrin" ?
Actually one of the kindest and funniest man I’ve ever meet ,
I remember watching an interview with Larry Holmes soon after the fight where the interviewer asked him "What was the biggest contributor to your victory?" and Holmes answered something like ... "The fact that Tex doesn't know how to box".
He didn't mean it as an insult, he was pointing out that if Tex knew how to throw a punch as good as he could take one he'd have been unstoppable.
I recognized this guy as an actor but never knew he was a professional boxer. His boxing record was 42-7-1, which is quite good.
Especially considering his opposition
Indubidubly 🙂
He's a hysterically funny, intelligent, and witty interview. One of the best and most unexpected I've ever heard.
I am so glad these presentations are still available. Never saw before but what a brilliant guy this boxer is
Hi John how are you doing😊
Johnny Carson! There will never be another like him! I’m glad I lived in a time to watch him
A sharp mind to go with a rock solid jaw. A lot of class and humor. Refreshing to hear him engage after the beating he took from Holmes.
I met Randall on a trolley in West Philly. What a nice guy and a class act. Could not be more friendly and personable.
Hey West Philly!👍
The real humor originates in the formulation of his sentences. That's why people like George Carlin were so funny. A wordsmith! Thank you Randall!

Good stuff
I just sprayed my milk with his "His eyes are brown" comment about the doctor's comment about the brutality of boxing.

"One of the most expensive things is to know Don King" Randall Tex .That quote is gospel to fighters who associated with Don King💯
This is one of the toughest men in the world in my opinion..and his sense of humor is absolutely awesome!!!
Wow ! Tex Cobb is so intelligent and what a sense of humor . There will never be a talk show host even close to as good as Carson . Miss you Johnny .
Randall "Tex" Cobb - Born May 7, 1950 - 74 years today - Happy Birthday!! ❤❤❤
He was born December 10,1953
Nobody was better at late night television than Jonny Carson! He was and always will be the man.
It wasn't until I was out of high school, and was staying with my grandparents (spring & summer 1968), that I discovered Johnny Carson. My grandmother would stay up almost every night to watch his show.😄 And I got hooked too.😊
I thought it was in this interview, but he was once asked about Howard Cosell saying after seeing that fight he would never do another boxing match. Tex replied "Hell I'd fight Holmes again if it would make him quit Monday Night Football!"
Probably on Late Night with David Letterman.
I should thank them.
i loved cosells weekly recap
Love Johnny’s ability to bring out the absolute best and most entertaining in interviews. Also adore his sarcastic sense of humour. We need way more like him, what a class act for Late Nite. No wonder he is the king. Love this interview. Hilarious. ❤ ♥️ 😂😆🤣
Extremely well spoken quick witted and hilarious he was a gem for sure
So underrated, what a great human being, and love his sense of humour.
And a Texan had his day in the Sun.
We are real proud of this one.
He is amazing! Wished the interview was longer.😄
This guy is smart. Eloquent. I can’t say I ever heard him speak before. Amazed.
I saw Tex Cobb at a dinner with Larry Holmes on video. Tex was very funny and had Larry laughing about everything that happened before, during and after the fight.
That is a hilarious and raw tribute to Holmes by Tex. Tex did not hold back. Tex is just an amazing human being with a personality as big as Texas.
Tex is HILARIOUS.
I did not know that.
Never knew how hilarious he is. Imagine taking that head-beating for 15 rounds and still being this quick and funny.
To bad there are not shows like the Carson show anymore, that entertained us with quality guest like Tex and many others, thank God for clips like this great laugh with few tears of joy once mixed when becomes incredibly hilarious!!!!!!
Tex Cobb had one of the best chins in boxing history. His sense of humor is second to none.
Is there an uncensored version of this interview?
Great sense of humor 👏, a good man. Even ignored the guest sitting next to him laughing when it was not called for. Good guy Randall.
First time listening to a Tex Cobb interview. What a nice humble man he is
I remember working with this man.
Class act Johnny Carson. Interview was nice and smooth and every enticing!
Today, it looks a little strange to see someone sitting quiet long enough to t let a guy like tex have his say.
Johnny was an ace.
Truly funny man. Definitely not the stereotypical punch drunk fighter. Quick wit and self depreciating.
And tough as nails.

"Well, one of the most expensive things you can do is know Don King."
This is so great on so many levels.
Loved Tex Cobb in "Raising Arizona." Great casting.
Tex is wonderful, his sense of humor is a bright spot.....
Why is it that when I see these old clips on TH-cam I can't help but think how much better out TV, movies and sports stars were back then. I'm getting old
Never knew he was a fighter, only knew him as an actor !
Funny guy, really laid back, hilariously subtle...
I have a great deal of RESPECT for Randall Cobbs.
How can you not love a guy who can get in the ring with Larry Holmes, survive 15 rounds (which isn't done anymore), get beat and have that sense of humor?
What an entertaining and awesome interview. Randall has a fantastic and witty personality!
I remember Randall in the 1983 movie "Uncommon Valor". He was great in the movie!
