Hi guys I'm the piano player in this. To answer some questions from below: No we aren't all together anymore but all still friends. Cody the drummer is on the road with Jamey Johnson, Mikey the bass player last I heard was in Florida with Disney running bands for them but I'm unsure now where he went, I gig part time in pickup gigs.... mostly as a guitar player,...I was always the worst one in the band and I enjoyed the years we all worked together. John is literally one of the best in the world and a super dude. He's definitely one of my heros and I'm proud to have worked for him. Thanks for all the kind words!
Wow! Back in '07-08' I flew to Nashville from California with a bud. He wanted to talk to some people "in the business". I was driving a cab and didn't know much about it. But when he asked if I wanted to go. I said heck yes! The first night we were picked up at the airport and taken to "the studio". I was astonished to see a home made into a full blown studio. It was amazing. There I met a man named Johnny. He was a large fellow with a sincere smile. I had no idea who he was. It was near dinner time. Johnny said they were going out for barbecue and would we like to come along. We accepted his gracious offer and found ourselves at what I thought was a most unique place. I don't recall the name. But they served up some smoked barbecue that is still the best I've ever had! We have it all wrong in California! They had a full stage and a band was playing that night. We talked a bit over brews and ordered our food. These were seriously down home people and I felt very welcome there. I was happy to be there relaxing and was enjoying talking to Johnny, his wife, and friends. Our food arrives and it's a spread fit for a king. That was when the band stopped and a guy went up on stage and got the mic. He announces that Johnny something or other is there and maybe we can "get him to come up and play some?" The house cheers! And the guy sitting across from me gets this big smile on his face. Then he gets up, walks up to the stage, and picks up a guitar! I'll never forget that night. How could I? I witnessed a master at work playing guitar like he invented it! Later I told Johnny I felt like smashing my guitar when I got home, hehe. I was feeling pretty humble at the moment, hehe. I'd never be as good as he is, not even close, ever. He asked me if playing made me happy. I said yes. He smiled and said, "That's all that matters. If it makes you happy. Then keep playing." So I still do, hehe :-) I smile when I think of Nashville now. Thank you for your gracious hospitality Johnny. Respect to you from Huntington Beach!
John O'Mary "He's one of the good guys." You said it brother! Your comment caught me ranting about Comey just doing his job, hehe. But now I'm smiling and thinking about listening to some of Johnny's guitar. Peace
I got to see this performance live, and Johnny absolutely blew the doors down… I was in the front row with a bunch of guitar nerds and all of our jaws were on the floor the entire time. Damn that boy can play!
I've known of Johnny for around 10 years. I've known all along what an incredible player he is but after watching this, he's just gone up another notch in my book. Incredibly clean, precise picking technique and on top of that, fantastic phrasing. This is a perfect guitar clinic. Almost every technique any guitarist has ever done, done flawlessly. The whole band is amazing. I'm so blown away that I'm rambling.
Johnny two days drive past next level, as always. He is the most flawless technical player of ANY style I believe I've ever personally witnessed. That being said, this band is precision dialed. That bass player is a bad man. Drummer is as well.
I agree. Young players could learn a lot by observing his left hand technique. Look where he keeps his thumb, kids. And look at the position of his hand and wrist. Excellent fundamentals, and great sounds that come from all of that.
The kids can also learn that he does not use his pinky the way he should many many of the old famour rock & blues guys like page clapton beck and hendrix only used every finger but the pinky- too bad they did not learn right they could have been faster and better- not just faster but better too but i guess the bottom line is who cares? i dont do you?
Johnny may be the most underrated and over-looked guitarist ever. As this video demonstrates, he can literally play and weave any style of music together without breaking a sweat. His playing has always been fantastic, but his constant smile, lack of negativity, and positive attitude despite his physical limitations is inspiring. As one of his students for a few months now, my playing has improved exponentially. A true gem of a player and person!
Johnny and the band were hitting on all cylinders on this show....nailing it! Awesome playing skills! Johnny is unbelievable. What a guitar talent! What a band!
@@jerryporter1700 Definitely, I was there as well, great show. But, as I recall he did not play this incredible hybrid rock n roll. He is a much rocking dude now tone and all. God bless U.S.A.
Country, Chicken Pickin, Blues, Rock, Rockabilly, what isn't Johnny Hiland unbelievable at? Love Johnny, what a special soul. Freakin enjoyed this a bunch!
Came hear to hear Johnnys" country twang .. opened and I thought I had inadvertantly opened a Stevie Vai video .. he's awesome ... would have to say he may well be the most versatile guitarist around ... covers most modern genres
Obviously a phenomenal musical talent, I'm happy to report that Johnny is also a really nice person. I think anyone else who has had the pleasure of meeting him will agree that he has a sweet and kind personality.
No doubt Johnny Hiland is one of the most talented guitarists in the world right now. Very few guitar players can play any style they want and be amazing at all styles.
Sorry, I never heard of Johnny Hiland before but I stumbled onto this video...I'm glad I did. This guy kicks a**! If Albert Lee and Steve Vai had a child, it would be Johnny Hiland.
I DID NOT HE COULD PLAY LIKE THIS!!! I've been in awe & have been inspired to improve my Chicken 'n' Picking but this is a completely different tangent. I'm 75 & have been "playing" rock for 60 years & I still have so much to learn - Gawd bless you Johnny! 👍😍🙏 & Thanks
There's Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton , Johnny Winter and Jeff Beck and many more . And then there is Johnny Hiland who should be near the top with any guitarist out there.
Saw Johnny like 3 times out here and man.... all the way down to last wire he was having his brother walk him out to a chair and carry his guitar to him as he sat front stage and ripped.. RIP Johnny
I’m so glad I stayed in the living room my friend was watching this on the tv. We did not care for the intro. But then the darn music kicked in! He has the chops!!!! They all do! A lot of skill and excellent live players. Johnny has his own style and sound unlike most out there right now. Loving it here in the burbs of Detroit!
Maaaaan! Johnny. I've been paying guitar for 58 years and i'm 67 now and I haven't got a glitch on you Johnny Hiland... Your awesome Johnny and i wish that i could play guitar like you m8t... :-)
Never seen two hands more meant for playing the guitar - such a relaxed natural flowing style...quite unreal....how come i only just found out about JH?
This man is amazing. I just can't get enough of his playing he can play anything. I never knew who he was till just recently & i'm glad i came across him cause he's awesome. I'll be watching him play for years to come now WOW😮👍
I wish he would just make it look even a little like what he is playing is as hard as it is. He makes it look like childs play but what comes out of the speaker is insane.
@@chopholtz4950 Yes, I've heard he has subtotal vision loss, but regardless of his vision, his talent is just in his organic makeup. It is just so effortless for him! When I watch him play, my mouth just hangs open and I stare at the screen motionless lol. He has a gift and this is one of my fav go-to guitar videos.
I'd only known Johnny as a "chickin pickin' country guitarist" (and an exceptional chicken picker!) What a surprise to discover his multi-facet playing. Even more more respect for the man!
Shawn Lane is the only other player besides Johnny that I have ever seen that seemed to have an absolute command of the fretboard! effortless! Amazing!

Is he underrated tho? i mean everybody who knows him seems to be pretty impressed! :-D
