  • Comedian Jerrod Carmichael sat down with Ebro in the Morning to have a great conversation on his decision to announce that he was gay to the world for the first time, the reaction from his family, cancel culture, comedians who get personal, and even shared a new film he is working on.
    His stand-up special 'Rothaniel' is streaming now on HBO Max.

    In terms of comedy evolving: The problem is the art form is so niche with so many different people liking different kinds of humor. What it lacks is "Genres". There's raunchy, clean, story-telling, physical, improv, etc. It's similar to music, but no one is talking about it. None of the networks like Comedy Central or HBO has helped set up these necessary genres when it comes to comedy specials. I have a hunch that they enjoy the divisiveness of it all.

At 23:03 he explains how art is a creative objective form but then later tries to undercut the creativity behind Dave’s objective artistic points. Like should his subject matter really matter that much? It’s art. That’s it. Dave’s discontent with people’s response to his comedy is that they don’t treat it like an art form, but instead treat it like a stage to bash people from. That’s too personal. The greatest comedians always talk about current events. That doesn’t make it dangerous.

      THANK YOU. Getting that critique from a fellow-comic is like if a rapper went out of his way to comment on how Eminem “took some music too far”. It’s surreal to watch comics feel the need to draw parameters on another comic’s chosen expression that is CLEARLY resonating. Dave has made a career of putting words to uncomfortable subjects, THE subject we have arbitrarily decided can NOT be dissected of this generation is this fairly new phenomenon of a group that is above any reproach or discussing outside of purely applauding for simply existing. That is why Chappelle resonates.

    TO Dave Chappelle CRITIC especially to Rosenberg and Jerrod! Dave is a social commentary comedian . Dave jokes about EVERYBODY . The people who are saying Dave ONLY jokes about LGBT or only focus on his LGBT jokes , those are Dave Chappelle critics who are LGBT allies or LGBT themselves. To Jerrod, dude cut the holy comedians act and why did you fall for the trap to say something bad about Dave.. A comedian job is joking about people that includes family and friend not themselves.

    Love Jerrod's comedy. His sitcom was one of my favorite at the time. However, I think they're (intentionally) missing the mark on the "controversial comedy" conversation. I rarely see comedians super upset when their jokes aren't perceived as funny or when someone expresses that the joke was hurtful to them. Unfortunately, what happens more and more in this era is comedians get labelled as ___phobic by whatever group feels they're the butt of the joke. At that point, I understand why someone would feel the need to correct them (or even protect their brand).

      The thing with chapelle (I’m assuming what it’s abt) is that his most recent special had large parts where he said some shitty stuff abt trans ppl AND didn’t have a punchline. So if he’s saying shitty stuff and not telling jokes, what am I supposed to call him???
      Also with “sticks and stones” (his 2nd to last one), the jokes were just unoriginal. Like I saw the same trans jokes on Reddit in 2013. Now, if he was some hack open mike, I’d call him unfunny. But he’s Dave chappelle. If he’s really sacrificing his talent to tell unfunny trans jokes, I gotta believe there’s some transphobia there

    • @44yup
      @44yup 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@roshana110 My statement was a larger point about comedy (and society) in general, and the casual labeling of individuals as transphobic, xenophobic, homophobic, misogynistic, etc based solely on them being the butt of a joke (or a series of jokes) they didn't enjoy. I'm simply stating that the labelling is what prompts the defensive response from the comedian/comedienne, not that someone didn't enjoy the special or didn't find a joke funny. That labelling is a fair (and oftentimes necessary) thing to be defensive about.

      It’s not about necessity. It’s about freedom to openly be yourself. When you know there are people who will cast judgement on you for those choices, there’s some level of fear for most people.
      Is it necessary to question people for openly and proudly being themselves?

      It's about being comfortable in your own skin and identity. And It's not him or people in the LGBT community that made it something difference and of needing to be adressed. Adressing it is a form of freedom with the cost of possibly losing relationships, especially being from a community still filled with prejudice toward sexuality. That's why it's considered brave. He could've chosen to keep it a secret, but he chose to speak out for himself and for those who are like him but still scared of the repercussions.

      But the thing is I don't want to know what you like unless I ask you and even then I probably don't care. Being free and open is not an excuse for telling everyone your business. It's like attention whoring on a different level. That said, I don't think anyone should be oppressed or dismissed because of their sexuality aside from pedos. They get no love.
