  • This video is based on these instructions from instructables:
    www.instructables.com/Tin-Can...
!!! USE A LOT OF ELECTRICAL TAPE, SO IT WONT LEAVE SCRATCHES ON YOUR BELL!!!
It's not nearly as versatile as a real Harmon mute, but it works exceptionally well as a practice mute. It reduces the sound level a lot without causing too much resistance to the playing. Actually, it works better than most of the commercial practice mutes I have tried.
Sadly, I accidentally screwed up this mute by trying to push it into the bell of my pocket trumpet, which had a little different shape. After that it didn't work that well anymore in my normal B&S Challenger 3137.
Don't pay too much attention on my playing, I made this video some time ago :D

After a-lot of testing it ended up as a harmonica resonator where the sound is more focused to the microphone. I’ll get back with a video later. Thanks for interesting idea.

    Hey, thanks for the tip!
Could you please tell, what is the second tune you are playing( with the mute) ? Is it an improvisation, or existing composition?

The second song is "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?"

Very cool tutorial! I love beer! But i have a question: what did you do with the second beer can, i saw that you made a ring and put it on the first can, but then it looks like it disappeared. Where did it go? What did you do to it? Is it necessary for the mute to work?

I made the ring from a smaller beer can (0,33 l). I put it around the "slices", so that those slices stay in a good order when I shape it with the electrical tape. So you only need one big (1 l) and one small (0,33 l) can. For better instructions, check out the link in the description.
