You made some good points but... probably good to clarify a few things. Autopilot makes you much more relaxed during a road trip (and in heavy traffic) than driving a car without it even as you need to stay engaged because you are monitoring rather than having to make multiple/constant adjustments per minute to acceleration, braking, and steering which wears on you after a while. Also, what you referred to as "next level of Autopilot." is called FSD beta. FYI, FSD beta is amazing and improving every few weeks. It has improved to the point that in many drives it is also relaxing and can almost feel like you have a "chauffeur mode" although one definitely needs to monitor and stay engaged. Also, 250 kW chargers are not limiting the charge rate to your car if you have someone parked next to you. Your car has a charging curve which peaks near 250 kW rate (when using a 250kW charger) when the car's battery is at a low state of charge. The charging rate then gradually drops until it is a lot slower as the battery gets full. So if you drive into a supercharger with 40% charge you will not see the 250kW rate. If you drive in with 2% you will.

I just completed a 5,531 mile US road trip in my 2021 Model 3 SR+
Over 13 days of driving (July 10 through July 31, 2022, with time in Kentucky) from Sacramento CA to Louisville KY and back (with numerous side trips), I drove nearly half what I drive in a year.
Shortest daily distance ~300 miles. Longest drive in a day: 650+ miles. Average daily drive ~425 miles.
The final analysis: Wow. This is definitely a road warrior vehicle, despite so-called “conventional wisdom.”
I am still plugging in metrics and numbers, but I estimate about 60 (57 exactly) charging stops. In all those stops, I only had ONE 5 minute wait, at Glenwood Springs, CO. One. For 5 minutes. I’ve waited longer in a grocery store line.
I drove through and charged in major cities (LA, Amarillo, OK City, Little Rock, Memphis, Nashville, St. Louis, Kansas City, Denver, Salt Lake City) and countless small towns and wide spots in the road. Typically, I was either the only one there or one of two Teslas. My typical stop was 20-25 minutes. Enough time to have a short walk about, use the bathroom, grab a bottle of water, and then get back on the road (the breaks, and auto pilot, assured I’d be rested and relaxed after hours of travel).
I charged on weekdays, weekends, rush hour, nighttime, huge supercharger (50+) or small (4), on the interstate or off some small blue highway… I drove and charged through them all. No cherry picking. (Consider also the local catastrophic climate issues in Kentucky and St. Louis during my trip home, July 26-31.)
    ~60 (57) superchargers. 6,000 (5,531) miles. 13 days of driving. In July 2022. One wait. 5 minutes.
And 5,531 miles of supercharging cost me $600.00. ($522.00, actually.) More than charging at home. But far less than the ICE equivalent (2021 330i, RWD BMW), at ~33 hwy mpg, premium gas. With no maintenance cost other than wear/tear on tires.
I can’t speak for others. But I’d say that’s a complete success in my book.

I did that once from SF to LA never again in my model 3 performance. It adds 2 extra hours to your trip give or take and the next me goes faster than 70 mph the less battery one has and that’s not using A/C which is why a lot of Tesla owner go slow on the freeways or highways or on long trips. If I would use my Honda 4 cylinder I could get there in 1 gas tank going over 70-80+ no problem in 5 hours vs. 7+ hours. I love my M3 performance, but not for these kinds of trips.

Love my Tesla S. Pros, handling, acceleration, interior and looks. I commute 149 miles a day (Central Valley to the Bay Area)Cons, charging times or finding a place to charge and waiting. Price? Most people wont be able to purchase a $40k -$100k EV. Most will get a Honda Civic for sub $20k. Tires wear a lot quicker on these heavy cars. With that said, California is introducing legislation to charge by weight for registration. So will see how that goes and the added fees will be forced to pay. All in all the pros outweighs the cons, but I really don’t see the average American charging a car from their apartment or dwellings. Here in California , we’re still waiting on the multi billion dollar bullet train that was a promised early in 2020 is nothing more than a scam.

Last time we drove our ICE vehicle from SF to LA, we had to still factor in stopping for gas at some point. And usually a stop to grab food, and/or use the restroom (especially with a kid). The only difference with the Tesla is that we stop to charge instead of refuel, and there are usually nicer bathrooms than at the rest stops, and sometimes we can grab something to eat while we charge (can't refuel and grab a meal, unless you're into gas station hot dogs).

    • @drumflip1253

@@danielleg5045 I can gas up and go in 5 minutes. How long to charge? Also assuming you can find a charge station. A lot of desert trips I take I don’t see charging stations for hundreds of miles. Infrastructure isn’t there to make it convenient or quick.

Let's see ... it cost $14.43 to add 162 miles of range. In an ICE car getting let's say 25MPG it would need 6.5 gallons of gas. Say gas in Kettleman City is $4.50 per gallon which may be generous in California. Then that 6.5 gallons would have cost $29.25. So driving the Tesla saved $14.82. Not bad. To get an equivalent ICE cost vs the EV, gas would have to cost $2.22 per gallon: $14.43 / 6.5 = $2.22. I haven't seen that price here since 1969 (paraphrasing the Eagles line in Hotel California).

Yep, I'll keep my ICE vehicles until EVs become commodities. I just went to a convenience store today that had Tesla chargers with ALL spots filled mostly by ICE vehicles because the parking lot was FULL. Most of the gasoline pumps were available however. They fill your tank in about 8 minutes.
