Does the New Testament Lie About Prophecy?

There are several prophecies about Jesus in the New Testament, but when we look at them in the Old Testament we encounter problems, as many are not really prophecies at all. How do we respond to this?

“The Old Testament is in the New revealed; the New Testament is in the Old concealed.” (The Spirit and the Letter, 5)
- St. Augustine of Hippo (354-430 AD)
The Old Testament, while not always explicitly prophetic, contains types and shadows that find their full meaning in Christ.
Well said. Such a good way to put it!
Kudos on providing the source as well! ❤

Thank you for this, this is one of the polemics I’ve had the hardest time with
this is the one that I see a lot but not many address. thank you.
same, guys like Pete enns made it really tough for me
Well done, Michael!
In addition, I’d add that there were Messianic prophetic traditions (inspired by the scriptures) that pre-date Christianity that match well with Jesus more than anyone else, although the original scriptural authorial context was not Messianic.
For example, the Targum Jonathan preserves a Messianic interpretation of the fourth servant song (Isaiah 53) that pre-dates Christianity. The Qumran Escene Jews made many similar predictions of a Divine Messiah inspired by the scriptures (11QMelch, The expansions to 1 Enoch, the Son of God text, etc.)
So for me, the predictive power comes with the reception history of the Hebrew Scriptures. Not the original text’s meaning. It’s perfectly normal to adopt things to suit our own purposes (like the US anthem originally being a poem, or the purpose of giving birth to children vs. their own purposes they find in life).
So Psalm 110 might not have *originally* meant the Messiah was to be called divine from the order of Melchizidek, but 2nd Temple Jews anticipated this kind of “priestly” “Messiach Ben Yosef,” and it was not uncommon to thoughts of Jews during Jesus’ time. 2nd Temple Messianism was incredibly diverse because of this.
I’d also argue there are clear prophetic indications in the scriptures of worship of the Israelite God spreading to the gentiles, the Lord appearing before others, a new heavens/new earth, and a new covenant.
Nevertheless, typology is an important category of Messianic prophecy when it comes to this argument that Christians need to consider, and so I’m grateful videos like this that forward the discussion.
I’m also working on a video on Messianic prophecy too, hopefully to come out midway through this year.
this is all very good, but to play devil's advocate,
if the jews had an idea of what the messiah would be like why not the death and resurrection part? i remember arguments being used by michael that the jews didn't expect a dying and rising messiah in the middle of time. i know i'm treating them like a hivemind but i distinctly remember it being a big deal that they had no expectation of that. a lot of this typology stuff would raise red flags to a skeptic because of how "in-collusion" it feels rather than unexpected.
@@ChevySamk Yeah, that's a fair point. I would say regardless that in light of Messianic predictions being incredibly diverse just amongst Jews, I think we are in a good position, regardless, to propose the disciples, who weren't experts or scribes of the Hebrew scriptures, didn't expect a death and resurrection of a Messiah, but they were still isolated concepts foretold earlier in scriptures they didn't understand.
For example, 2 Baruch 30:1 and 4 Ezra 7::29-30 speak of a dying Messiah. However, the Messiah dies after a successful earthly reign, not as an atonement for sins. Both a dying Messiah and atonement were concepts that existed in pre-Christian 2nd Temple Judaism, but only Christianity puts them together, and a few other concepts like a divine Messiah, resurrection, and more.
I really like Dr. Ruben Buhner's phrase that Christian theology was still "within reach" of the Jewish messianic discourse.
TLDR, Messianic prophecy would add a "contextual force," indications of divine intervention among the Jewish people, traditions, and scriptures. It's evidence for the resurrection, but not sufficient to explain it wholesale without the appearances to the unexpectant disciples.

"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to FULFILL them."
That alone should be a reason to think twice if one thinks there's a problem with fulfilling other things.
So Jesus saying that the laws of Moses are STILL in effect INCLUDING the stupid and evil laws about slavery, rape, and genocide, and what foods you are allowed to eat (which doesn’t include bacon 🥓 by the way.) are somehow proof that he supposedly “fulfilled” Old Testament scripture??? Are you sure you want to defend THAT stuffed turkey? 😒👉🦃 (which you’re also not allowed to eat also.)

I think prophesies can be a very powerful argument for Christianity and I wish apologists used them more, but the trick is, you have to show that it is unlikely the authors just wrote it in afterward. I kind of wish there was a video or book that faced that question head on.
yes, if anyone else in the comments recommends a book I would love to see it
Why would they do that? Would they really spend hours upon hours scowering the Old Testament for prophecy, knowing they would get persecuted and killed...and get nothing out of it? You can't just twist the scriptures like that and get away with it.
@Grandmaster_Dragonborn I'm not skeptical about it. I think that they saw things that reminded them of Jesus and applied it to him, but critical scholars want to assume that they just tried to fabricate things whole cloth. So, I think it's best to just face these criticisms head on.
@@jackricky5453 I know and agree. I'm just trying to steelman those scholars and ask: "Why would they do that?"
@@jackricky5453 i 100% believe they fabricated it. jesus didnt do any of the actual old testament prophecies so they found some random out of context quotes
Great! Now, how to stop Muslims from saying "we are saying this about the prophecies of Muhammad in the Bible!"
IP could you also do a video on aspects of "failed prophecy" such as eternal sacrifices, David never having his throne vacant, levites offering sacrifices forever, etc? I get that Christians can say this are metaphorical and/or fulfilled in Jesus, but in the historical context of their revelation, it seems to make more sense to interpret these literally. I'd love to hear cases against this.
@ip i aggree this may be a curious topic to cover
People who point this out do not understand levels of understanding.
They don't understand the nature of prophecies in many cases. One event foreshadowing another. They think nobody was wise enough to have realized there was a deeper meaning. Typology is very much used. Some foreshadow, many foretell. And prophecy can have a horatory meaning as well
This was incredible thank you
Nailed it ! Fulfillment is not simply completion of prophecy , it’s to bring to fruition all aspects of scripture!
Good explanation!
Thanks IP! This video is awesome and something I've thought about for a long time, especially as I am a fantasy writer and use prophecies as a huge argument for Christ.
For me, there are four pieces that come together to undeniably prove the divinity of Christ, and the fourth is the fulfillment of prophecy in Christ. The first three are the scientifically proven existence of the Old Testament before Christ, the historically backed up person of Christ by contemporary historians, and the reliable eye-witness testimony of writers in the New Testament.
Put prophecy into that and you have evidence of the divine in a way only God can bring about; evidence that goes beyond personal miracles. With how many Old Testament authors there are and how well their prophecies (even unknowing ones like Psalm 22, my personal favourite) are fulfilled, they can't be anything but divinely inspired. It speaks to me of faith in the word of God and how trusting his promises is counted as righteousness because those promises were pointing to Christ, making that trust faith in Him for Old Testament figures.
Could you please tell us where you got that list of all the prophecies at the start? That chart is incredible! I'd love to use it as a source.

I just finished reading the epistle of barnabas and it has so much typology it feels like a stretch at times. It's a great letter to read but I can tell why it didn't make the canon cut.
Great explanation. I hope you will do more videos about biblical prophecies in the future, they’re one of my favorite topics about the Bible
You read the Scriptures to find the eternal life but those speaks of Me (Christ).
All the Scriptures, so even when David wrote about Judah.
Well done 🎉
We also need to remember that many things that happened in Jesus’ ministry and life have parallels to Old Testament stories and references to those stories.
Awesome 🤩

Thank you for this informative video, btw did you take my suggestion or did you already plan to make a video on this?

Why would they caption this like that? There was mostly foretelling and less typology concerning Christ or Yeshuah Hamashiach. And this is exemplified in the New Testament as well, and shown to be the case. Moses foreshadowing Yeshuah, the old and new covenants. ( In fact, the Abrahamic covenant as well )

Jesus is the true Israel similar to how the church is the new Israel( Galatians 6:16), that's why Mathew applies something about Israel to Jesus.
Luke 24, 25 Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: 26 Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? 27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. ... 44 And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. 45 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, 46 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: 47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 And ye are witnesses of these things. 49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high. 50 And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them. 51 And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven. 52 And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy: 53 And were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen.

nothing here. same old arguments that have already gotten a fair response on line.
He pretty much does the mental gymnastics that every apologist does.. and seem to work only on the people that already agree with him before watching the video.. lol the first step for this video to work is that Luke really wrote Luke ( most likely not) that the accounts of what Jesus said are true ( again most likely not).. and also that the people how need this video are desperate for something that can confirm the bias of their dogma ..
I don’t see how you even come to your conclusion at 5:35 after reading all the stuff you read. Yeah the New Testament authors just wrote stuff about Jesus that sounded like the Old Testament but it does make it fit together, it’s like the Book of Mormon to the Old Testament
Hello Micheal, I know that it is unlikely that you see this, because of how much work you put into your amazing ministry, but I have a question that is very important. I have a female friend who doesnt believe. She feels like there is some kind of thing out there so how can i help her understand that it is our LORD Jesus? She understands that its a valid historical document but is hesitant to believe that the miracles actually happened. How can I help her realise that the resurrection happened and that it is proof that Jesus is the messiah and our God and that his death and resurrection saved us. Are there any historical documents, or historical texts that I can quote that are Christian or non Christian texts so I am able to help her realise that even people who didnt believe knew that it was true and that Jesus resurrected? She is an amazing friend to me and I want her to be saved. She is an amazing friend of mine and I hope to help the spirit enter and save her. This question isnt just for Micheal, its for anyone reading who has anything to help her. I also request that people pray for her. Her name is Sophie. Thank you
I appreciate this video for recognizing authorial intent.
However, according to this reinterpretation of prophecy, the New Testament authors could pull from anywhere in Scripture that would support what they already believed. This forces us to reconsider God’s role in scripture, considering that His omnipotence is not necessary for this kind of prophecy. I’m curious if you do have evidence for God’s role in scripture, or if this is an assumption based on your own faith experience.
Also, I find it ironic that by taking context into account, you’re avoiding this same cherry-picking issue. That means you acknowledge that it’s mot the best way to read a text while rationalizing it as part of your argument.
i know this isn’t what the video’s about, but i had to mention how i kept seeing Magnetic Aura by Takeshi Mizuki in comments everywhere. curiosity got the better of me, and i finally read it. it’s wild how much it changes your mindset and the way you come across to others. it’s not about pretending to be confident-it’s about genuinely building that energy so it shows naturally. definitely worth all the buzz it’s been getting.

i know this isn’t related to the video, but i’ve been seeing Magnetic Aura by Takeshi Mizuki mentioned in so many comment sections lately. i thought it was just hype until i finally gave it a shot. honestly, the book blew me away. it’s all about understanding your energy and how to naturally draw people and opportunities toward you. it’s not some overnight fix, but you start to notice little shifts in how people respond to you, and it just builds from there.
Seems like a scam when so many people randomly recommend the same book with almost the same words

Unfortunately, I do not have any "credentials", so my comment will be ignored again. This explanation is good but incomplete. If all of this is just typology it means that authors of NT were adding some new and foreign content to original text, which is not good. "You must be careful to do everything I am commanding you. Do not ADD to it or subtract from it!" - De 12:32. The truth is that the authors themselves provided hints that the text could (should) have another and more important meaning. Think about Hosea 11:1. How many times in the book Israel nation was called na‛ar? How many times the prophet refers to the nation as HIM? How many times the prophet calls Israel son? (singular!) More importantly: " When Balaam looked up and saw Israel encamped tribe by tribe, the Spirit of God came upon him, and he lifted up an oracle, saying:
“This is the prophecy of Balaam son of Beor,
the prophecy of a man whose eyes are open,
the prophecy of one who hears the words of God,
who sees a vision from the Almighty
who bows down with eyes wide open... His king will be greater than Agag,
and his kingdom will be exalted.
God brought HIM out of Egypt
with strength like a wild ox" ... Anyway, if you cannot see what Apostle Matthew had seen check out videos of ONE FOR ISRAEL! They have credentials. At least, listen to them...
