- New video demonstrating a Guar Gum recipe: • How to Make Giant Bubb...
I had more fun making this video than any I can remember in the recent past. Making giant bubbles may turn into an ongoing hobby. Some of my younger cousins have certainly enjoyed it as well! The bubbles seen in this video all used the three part bubble mix that I show being made.
24 oz Dishwashing Liquid
1 tbsp J-Lube (The most important part for giant bubbles)
3 US gal Water
After filming all the shots used in this video I started experimenting with baking powder and found that 3 tbsp added to the above mix improves the longevity and durability of the bubbles significantly. The ones in the video may have been large, but I have since been able to make them much larger! As I mention at the end of the video, the size increases greatly as you learn.
Here is a source for J-Lube as promised (one bottle makes hundreds of gallons of bubble mix): www.amazon.com/...
For those outside of the USA it may be difficult to find J-Lube. An alternative giant bubble mix uses Guar Gum instead, and quite effectively. Guar Gum is common worldwide. More info about bubble mixes using Guar Gum and where it is usually available for purchase can be found here: soapbubble.wiki...
For my bubble wand I use two fishing poles similar to this model: www.amazon.com/...
The fishing poles come in four sections, but I removed the last section because it was too flimsy to support the heavy wet rope. The tri string loop is attached to the end of the third section of each pole. As shown in the video, I use carabiners as an easy way of taking loops on and off, though a loop could just as easily be taped directly to the pole.
The rope I use for my tri string loop is 100% cotton clothes line with the core removed as demonstrated. Removing the core allows the rope to absorb significantly more bubble mix which allows much larger bubbles to be made. For more information about making a tri string wand (it's not a difficult thing to figure out on your own) you can do more reading here (there are also listed a number of other wand types that may be of interest): soapbubble.wiki...
Thank you for being one of the proud few who read video descriptions! If you would really like to help me out I would love it if you would share this video on Facebook, Twitter, or whatever else the kids are using these days. Thanks for watching! #NightHawkInLight

I used your video to create giant bubbles many times in the last few months. I'd like to thank you! It became one of my hobbies because of you :-). I'm from Israel and i did few bubble show in the street of Europe and Tel Aviv to raise money to buy equipment for the children in Gaza during the war. So THX again!
Awesome! It's really addicting isn't it? Very cool that you're using it for a good cause. I'd love to see a video.
Hi Yair, I'm trying to find this powder in Israel. Can you please tell me where i can find J-lube or Guar-gum here? Thanks !!
you can find it on eBay (J LUBE) with a worldwide shipment.
YOU ARE AWESOME,,! The world needs more of u❤️יאיר קור
So you kill the children in Gaza, then raise money to help some of the survivors of your war and occupation?
Never before has my life been as complete until i saw this... i love bubbles.....
Right..I just spent last 2 weeks hiding my bubble lab from my kid experimenting trying to get the perfect solution and I finally did it and boy oh boy I'm soooo happy so excited to show my kid today. I made 2 5 gallon buckets filled with it too so this should last a while. Granted I did fail another 10gallons in my experiments, lol. Ingredients are fragile and you have to add precise amounts, only thing that doesn't totally ruin it with too much is the dawn soap. Anything else, completely destroys entire bubble solution if you add too much.
You just refined what a big bubble is! Very original!
Just wait, I filmed some at night under artificial lights. The colors are jaw dropping. Soon as I have the footage in order I'll have a new video up.
nice
Spongebob would be proud:D
Why would SB be proud
Ashton Metzger Because he blows bubbles?
You literally read my mind
Lol xD
It's a giraffe!
If I never watched this I would have never heard of TKOR. Thank you 8yrs later and thank you for continuing to sharing useful content. You are held dear.
We just tried the recipe & built our own fishing rod bubble wands! I am hooked! I'm pretty sure I'm going to be known as the bubble lady at our local beach from now on.
It certainly is an addicting hobby!
tina davis hey Tina! I was thinking about making this for a family vacation in Florida, but wasn't sure how it would be on the beach. Did it work well for you?
Have you ever tried putting a small outdoor heater behind you when making bubbles? Just curious if it would cause them to rise after blown on a cool day.
Honestly I can't think of anything more pure than making giant bubbles with my nephews.
I've used this advice and blown many people's minds. Thanks for doing what you do!
This is the nicest comment section I've seen in awhile :D
Rocky I agree....why is it that people so often want to talk filth and trash in these comments?
We don't talk about CopperCab, it brings bad karma :P

This worked so well and a huge hit for kids and adults! Used the baking soda. Made some large adult ones with broom sticks and small ones for the kids with 2 foot dowels and 7 feet rope. Had some rope burn pulling the nylon from 125 feet of rope. Made hours of fun camping. Adult sticks bubbles popped quickly when it became a hot 30 degrees Celsius outside. Used up all 6 gallons of mixture in a day.
What is your resipe with baking soda please? It's difficult to order J lube in Greece.
@@TziMmys79 the baking soda is used with the J Lube. It wouldn't work without JLube, go to a vet and ask for powdered Lube, there is likely something similar there.
i share this on your INSTRUCTABLES page but noticed that there have no comments in 10 months...so i am posting this comment here in the hopes that you see it... you, and your willingness to share this, have inspired me, but more importantly, my daughter! and that means everything to me!
i wanted to share a story about my 7yr old daughter, myself and our dear friend, peter, who after a day of blowing bubbles and watching mayah innocently destroy them, screamed out "STOP!!!! (he is in his 80's) please, there is a whole world in there. and you're killing them all!" he showed her how to get right up under them and gently blow on them to see how long she could keep them floating...it was an exercise in slowing down, and it worked! so a few weeks later, she and i were camping, deep in the woods but with plenty of little clearings for the sunlight to peak through the trees. this time, she was the bubble blower and it was i who stood under them and blew gently to try and keep them from crashing down...right at that moment i noticed something quite extraordinary that i had overlooked most of my life. it was right then that peter's voice flooded my memory, "there is a whole world in there!" and indeed there was! our reflected planet was being seen, for the first time, by my eyes, in every single bubble that was blown from that point on!
after seeing your video and showing it to my little girl, we were both brought back to a beautiful summer we shared with our friend peter! so thank you!
Aww that was really touching :') its nice to see comments like these :D
plus we ordered the supplies to make giant bubbles!!! we can't wait!
Yeah I wanna make them too for my graduation photo haha idk if that is clichè but it'll be alright. Have fun with yours!
Got the J-lube in the mail today and tried your exact recipe with the 3 tbsp of baking powder. It works like a charm and it makes a ton. That J-lube is worth the $20 and the amount you use is literally only 50 cents worth. After the initial cost of the lube it only costs about $3 every session which consists of $2.50 for the dawn. 10 cents for the amount of baking powder and about 50 cents worth of J-lube (probably even less that that) This recipe is well worth it, just by the J-lube.
Cool so I just need to buy some rope and lube then :) no don't worry its just for making bubbles.
Oh i get it you are not going to lube your switches on your keyboard very original 😁
Thank you! So much fun for the kids. Taking them to the beach next week. People everywhere love them and I always send them to your video
My nephews are going to LOVE this. I am going to do this with them when we go on holiday this christmas! Thanks for the tutorial!
Did the bubbles at the family pig roast last night. It worked like a charm
and entertained kids and adults alike for hours until all 3 gallons were
gone. Got the cotton line from Tractor Supply and had to remove the nylon core.
J-Lube from Amazon. Used the 3 tbsp of baking soda recommended. Connected the line ends with a random knot and put it at the bottom of the loop. Used overhand knots on a bight and zip ties to connect the line to the fishing poles. Got some good 20' long bubbles going as well as a lot of 3-4' roundish ones. I used Dawn (non anti-bacterial).
Very cool! Yeah you can go through three gallons pretty quickly. Next time try baking powder instead of baking soda, that's what I use. They're similar but not altogether the same.
You're right, I meant baking powder. My brother mixed up another batch Saturday for a graduation party. Giant bubbles are a winner. Too bad I left all my stripped rope in Ohio. For the rope, I used small crochet hooks to pull the nylon out in a few spots along the way and then cut and pulled smaller sections of nylon leaving the cotton rope in tact.
do this in below zero temps. the bubbles freeze and collapse into themselves.
I made enough of these bubbles last year for the last day of school for 3 classrooms of kids and they worked perfectly!!! What a fun year-end activity!
I'm going to a big Italian Club picnic tomorrow and thought I'd make another batch. I'm a bit worried they might not work this time, though (I tried the 1/2 in. puddle left in the bottom of the bucket after I filled my jugs). Here's what I noticed this time:
- white sediment on bottom of bucket after letting sit overnight (maybe it was there last time, but I didn't notice)
- I tried remixing this sediment into the bubble solution before filling the jugs (does it need to re-settle again in the jugs?)
- before remixing the sediment, the solution seemed slimy (J-Lube seems to have mixed in), so I think it might have been the baking powder that settled at the bottom
- when using the wand (same wands as first time), the pre-bubble seems weaker (breaks more easily before becoming a bubble), but it does not seem "too" watery (still slimy)
- I can't seem to open the wands as widely without the pre-bubble breaking
- I'm able to make large"ish" bubbles with great care, but not the giant ones like last time
- it was hot outside (about 29ºC) with a gentle breeze.... calling for 30ºC tomorrow when I want to use this solution
Questions:
(1) Is the white sediment normal (baking powder old?)?
(2) Should the sediment be mixed back in (as it will likely settle again now that the solution is in jugs)?
(3) Is there anything I should/can do, or just hope for the best at the picnic?
Thank you SO much for sharing this recipe!
Sandra
The sediment is corn starch from the baking powder which is normal. It should not be mixed back in. It's hard to make giant bubbles when it's so hot out.
Fantastic video!! Ordered my J Lube for a bubble weekend 🙏🏼
J-Lube or guar gum. One or the other is necessary for bubbles this large or larger. If all you want are small bubbles there are other mixes you can use, but nothing else for this size.
Best bubble mix recipe on TH-cam !!!
Many thanks for the video upload and recipe.
I made the mix as you suggested here in Hong Kong. I'm taking the kids out later to see how it goes. Hot and humid here so hopefully it's a winner.
For all Hong Kongers, you can but this at "Market place."
🔸1 large heaped table spoon Guar Gum (HKD108-00 large bottle from TJ Garden plus South Lantau) it's a gardening supply store and health shop.

I'll try taking some pictures this time with my soapy hands 😀
Thanks for all you great advice.
Rich
I made a quick stand with the bubble mix at the top with a hole in it. Out of the hole I had 2 strings that were constantly making bubbles without the need to dip it. It was so easy to use that I had some kids play with it and it was great fun for them. I will make a video soon about how I made it. I have a short video now on my channel that shows it in action. Thanks for the inspiration. Let me know what you think of it.
Those colours look amazing.
Hey! I just saw your video on giant bubbles on Science Channel's 'Outrageous Acts of Science'! Congrats man!
Very cool. I forget if I gave them permission to do that or not...Oh well, hope they made it look good.
Yes, this works!!! Thank you for sharing 😀 2 years later, still the best bubble mix!
Am I the only one thinking that watching giant bubbles in slow motion is like seeing a part of the 4th dimension? Or into it somehow? The giant bubble at 3:52 for example, looks like there's an fiery explosion around near the middle.
that's just the clouded out sun's reflection
You are not the only one. I am thoroughly entertained.
Youre not the only one bro , im fuckin shook personally. Its beautiful. Its like an acid trip inside that bubble hahaha
Y'all are just high 😂
My wife bought me a Klutz brand bubble maker many years ago that had a bubble recipe that included glycerine. It worked fantastically and I entertained the kids in the neighborhood many evenings in the summertime. My favorite thing to do was make a bubble just as a thermal was forming, close it off and let it float upward with the kids counting for how long it lasted. I will have to try getting the contraption out and making the mixture with J-lube instead.
AHAHAHA HAHAHA! IT'S A GIRAFFE!
Thanks for sharing! Very impressed that you raised the bar on such large bubbles! Great job!
Quick question...is the bubble mix harmful for the environment? In other words, does it kill the grass? I don't want to do this in a park and find out later that I've killed the grass. :(
Recycled By Skattur It shouldn't hurt the grass, I've never had a problem with that.
NightHawkInLight Thanks...I'll give it a try then :)
Recycled By Skattur What are you!! Environmentalist. No Offense, I am nature too my friend.
Geometry Dash: Proton hehe I asked because I think it'd be really cool to do this for kids at a party. We have a lot of family birthday parties for the kids and I'd hate to do this at someone else's house and find out later I killed their grass! :p
Recycled By Skattur Good thing you asked! well actually you cannot harm a grass if that dishwashing liquid has natural formulas.
Followed the instructions and it worked great. Even a little of the J-Lube makes a big difference. Ended up needing more water than the recipe called for, I used a five gallon bucket and 6ft tomato steaks for the poles and a third of the recipe. Pulling the core out of the rope makes for a great wick.
Aurora borealis at this time of year at this time of day in this part of the country localized entirely within your kitchen? - Yes.
BEST BUBBLES EVER !!!
The children had sooooo much fun.... That the adults couldn't stand it any longer, and had to join in !!
Put bubble mix on their arms, allowing them to carry bubbles, and to put their arms inside the bubbles.
How long is the string you used?
Until you can't find it anymore
that's great. I've never heard of using "j-lube before. I'll have to try it. The best formula I came across involved using glycerine along with dishwashing liquid+water. Your bubbles look way better than mine. Here is an idea for you to try. Using a tractor tire cut in half as a basin to hold solution, use a ring of flexible electrical conduit (ribbed) to dip in and raise out to lift a big bubble people can stand in. It works great I have done it successfully!
Sometimes you realize just how magical the world really is..
This looks so much simpler than the mix wit corn starch etc. Will be giving this a try when I can get some J-Lube. thanks so much.
I NEED TO DO THIS!
The fact that you started with the good stuff has made me subscribe. Thank you for not starting with a six-minute intro.
Break some glow sticks open and put them into your bubble solution. Glow in the Dark Giant Bubbles!
Adam Bochart can anyone confirm this?
Next Level! Hell Yeah Glow in The Dark!! Everything!!
I made several smaller wands for my daughter's first birthday this weekend. Can't wait to try this!
would be cool to find a way to mix some glow sticks in there and make a giant glow in the dark bubble.
well all you have to do is cut the glow stixs and add it to the mixture.. we've done this before at campsites while camping with the family and it's pretty neat.
shawn170204
I hope you enjoyed your toxic soap shower.
Thanks iliasasdf but nothing like that has ever happened and we've been doing it for years lol... you can buy the bubble blowers with the long handles .. you don't need to come into contact with it and most of the bubbles pop when they fly away.. stop being so paranoid life is passing you by!!
Dish wash liquid is about the most soap friendly formula for the environment there is! Really!
I think he's referring to the glow stick liquid.. you can buy 1's that are non toxic.. he just doesn't know this.
It's been suggested by a few other people. It's a cool idea, but the film of a bubble wall is so thin I doubt it would hold enough to glow very brightly under black light. I could be wrong though. I may try it small scale and see what happens.
I prefer squirtle's bubble beam
Been lurking for awhile and I got sat, his recipe is great! Thank you!
spongebob is that you?
Garcia come home.
This works so well!I did this yesterday after my sons soccer tournament and it was awesome. Thank you so much for posting these instructions!
DAMN DUDE
This is fantastic. For those who might need something more portable (and little enough for kids to use), a miniature version can be created with cotton ribbon, attached to a three foot pole.
I hadn't seen this formula before, awesome. I've been using baking powder, Dawn, and corn syrup. Can't wait to try guar gum!
Cool
I made this solution yesterday. (I wanted to try it out last night, but my son said, "Mom, I think the neighbors will think we're either on something or crazy if we go outside blowing giant bubbles at midnight!") My sister and I tried it out a little while ago!!!! These 60+ year-old grandmas had a blast!!! This stuff is P-H-E-N-O-M-E-N-A-L!!!! It's super goopy and it makes the biggest, best bubbles! I live on the Gulf Coast and its super humid. I think if we had a wind today, we could have made bubbles at least 20 ft long!!! we got some that just wouldn't end and some bubble orbs that were at least 3-4 ft in diameter!!!
I had a hard time finding 100% cotton string. I read where 100% bulky acrylic yarn would work and it did! Really great saturation!
As a child I had a toy similar to this. It was a plastic tube with a slider that would run the length of the tube to open and close it. The cotton line was thin but wide like tape and had little holes woven in it to hold bubble solution. I also found that dawn detergent worked best but never used J lube.
I've never tried it. Check the link about guar gum in the video description. I think I remember something being said about xanthan gum there.
can't get enough of this, some of the shots look so unreal! great!
Bubbles are generally thought to be entertainment for kids, but they really are beautiful things to look at that anyone from anywhere can enjoy (especially ones this big)
Tried this with a mop handle and scaled it down down a bit. It was great! I used a quarter bottle washing liquid, a quarter litre bubble liquid and then half a litre of water and it worked pretty well as well.
Wow those bubbles are so cool! you can never be to old for bubbles!
somebody film this in 4K!!! all the colors and bubble edges would make a great TV demo for a store
I've been making and producing giant bubbles using Fairy, and Glycerine with purified or distilled water for a fair few years. I've only just heard of J-Lube, or Guar, and having taken delivery of both, am excited to see how much better my bubbles will be. Thanks for posting this video. More power to your upper arms! Blimey! They ache after a while don't they!? :D
Glycerin makes no significant improvement in J-Lube based bubble mixes. I did plenty of experimentation with it myself and others have backed up my results. Glycerin helps in mixes that use only soap and water as the other ingredients, but in more modern recipes using lubricants that already retain water there's nothing it can add to the equation.
Merlin's beard Harry! It's perfect!
Great video.
Yes, and as an added bonus you can use the bubbles as traps!~
Even watching them burst in slow motion is pretty awesome.
I cannot wait to try this....In Scotland we have so much wind, so the challenge will be to get the recipe right.....the wind will do the rest. Thank you
Of course! Check the video description.
I live in AZ also and I didn't have much success in this dry climate, I believe the lack of moisture in the air was a HUGE factor as I went to Carlsbad, CA on vacation and had incredible results!!
Great tutorial, It was very informative. I plan on trying to make this in the next few weeks as the weather gets warmer.
I was just wondering whether you (or others) had better success with the Guar gum recipe or the J-Lube recipe.
Also about how many feet of cord did you use for the single giant loop?
I appreciate anybody's input!
A few people have told me that guar gum recipes are better for beginners, and also better in low humidity, but I'm yet to try for myself. Both seem to work quite well. I used maybe 7 or 8 feet of rope for each side of the triangle. I have smaller loops too that work very well and are easier to control.
NightHawkInLight I might try the guar gum recipe over the summer then. I'll reply in the future about how successful it ends up being. I'll also try making fire-wool at some point. Love your videos, they're always giving me neat projects to do.
NightHawkInLight I just tried this today and it worked great! I ended up using the J-lube recipe instead of guar gum. I also used about 10 feet of cotton rope and 2 dowel rods. Thanks again for the help!
This is so amazing. I saw this in Mexico and had fun making bubbles all evening. The kids loved it.
YO! j-lube friggen ROCKS!!!
before i was just doing 1 cup dawn soap + 1 cup sugar + 1 gallon of hot water, which worked well.
I am hooked! I love the zen like experience as well, of blowing these beautiful bubbles.
Thank you. I never had more fun with bubbles. A giant crowd gathered and had a blast. Jules Hernadi
Thank you SO much for this! We had about sixty 6-8 year olds making these giant bubbles on the playground the last day of school! There was a ton of juice left over so we blew bubbles as a Canada 150 family celebration! Best Canada Day ever!
Glad it worked!
This worked well. Thanks for spreading the good vibes. This puts people in awe and makes people pull their cars over to see what's going on
Fantastic result.
J-Lube makes a huge difference.
I made my poles out of 1ft sections of PVC pipe and connectors. I put a cap on two of the pieces that I had drilled a hole in and placed a eye bolt through which was held in place with a locking nut. By building it this way I was about to store all the pieces, including J-lube and dish soap, in a 5 gallon bucket and make bubbles anywhere I had access to running water.
This video was filmed in my back yard, but it does attract a lot of attention in the park.
Love the disc golf basket in the background.
This is so cool the intro was amazing the giant bubble look like a rainbow on the ground
Hey, I chose your experiement as my school fair project. I just tried it out in my the parking lot outside my complex. It was....AMAZINGLY-AWESOME!!!
Careful using glycerine outdoors. It has been known to scorch or yellow the grass, if you dont rinse down the area around your buckets well, after bubbling.
Looking forward to trying your recipe this weekend! Massive bubble enthusiast here and experimenting with different formulae.
I used 6cups water, 1 1/3 cup of non ultra dawn dish liquid and a little more than a tablespoon of glycerine. Works decent:)
It's truly an epic....The bubbles were magnificent but that don't last for seconds I guess some ingredients like baking soda or something needed for longer durability....Overall it's truly an awesome idea....
Seems like I have found a perfectly safe and fun experiment that don't require any flameable or explosive materials :D
Just wondering do you know how long the solution last after making it? Also I've heard it's best to make the Bubble solution a day before use...is that correct? Thanks for this great video. Can't wait to start.
+27kjh I've noticed that bubbles are even better the second day, using up the leftover solution. I think you heard right.
Thank you so much for sharing your technique!!! I cannot wait to go and get my parts tomorrow to make this bubble maker!!!! Thank you again!!!
Def excited to do this with my daughter and the other kids in the family this summer. A+ project! Thank you!
Oh yaa you just gave me brilliant ideas for the giant wands possibilities, oh this is fun. It took me 2 weeks to perfect my solution and now that i got that down, theres no limit to whats possible.
This solution works incredibly well. I haven't tried any other mixtures but I feel like I don't need to. 10/10.
I used biodegradable soap but I am curious. Is J-Lube biodegradable/safe for the environment?
Yes it should be
That is AWESOME!! Now I have to show your video to my husband so he will make it! Thanks for the idea!!
A square knot or a bowline would do fine...There are a lot of knot tutorials on TH-cam that show how better than I can in text.
Hawkin, Thank you. You're absolutely right, other substitute mixture cause a lot of frustration, money wasting and large dead patches of grass. I managed in the end with Glucose syrup but now thanks to J Lube, your video and it's description, New Zealand can have fail safe massive wicked bubbles. Just don't let the J Lube leak in to your peritoneal cavity... I ordered 3 bottles from the U S of A on ebay. Churr bey!!!
This is wonderful! I made mine with 4" pieces of bamboo since the longer wands and weight of so much string/soap was too tiring on my ancient arms. I have two questions: after leaving the solution out overnight I noticed a sticky precipitate (on which I used a kitchen whisk to stir back in) and wondered if that was normal? Secondly, does the mixture lose strength or change its nature over time if stored, say, at room temperature? Thanks - New Subscriber
The precipitate is likely corn starch that is mixed into the baking powder, it shouldn't cause issues. I've had no trouble storing the mix for any amount of time.
I used to do this for my kids 30 yrs ago now with my grandchildren. Good job sir
I tried it with cheaper and more common ingredient , I searched for the j-lube content and found it consists of polyethylene glycol and suger with ratio 1:3 , PEG is found in constipation drugs like : movicol, movilax , miralax, macrogol and softlax , I bought it and mixed it with table sugar , grind and GOT IT! It worked! basically but needs some practice and proper measurements and costed me 10 EGP L.E = less than 1.5 $ ! I'll keep trying to improve and let you know , thanks :)
I was in NYC this past MAY and seen a dude in Central Park making giant bubbles, I'm back in Portland Oregon now and wanna do this here b4 summer's end.
Using PVA as j-lube in my solution, but consistency is very thick. And surplus of the solution
trickling down a rope interferes with bubble formation. And bubbles become to heavy, if you do not wait until the mixture drains. But there is about 3-4 degrees above 0 on the street, and i think it would be better with warm weather. Thank you for this video!
