    Notice how Harold's son is the only child not happy or smiling because his father won't accept he's dead and as a result his son doesn't have closure.

      I still cry to this scene till this day!! For us fans that been with Mulder since the beginning and his exhausting search for Samantha, there’s been cases like the clones but they weren’t the actual Samantha, when this episode aired (this might sound cheesy) i can say that this scene wasn’t just weight off of Mulder’s shoulder, but all of us too....

    The Moby song was perfect for this episode. You can faintly hear children laughing and playing in the background of the song. This episode always makes me cry. He finally knew what happened to his sister and got to see her one last time. And the idea of the walk ins coming in before the child dies is a comfort I wish was real. That no innocent child's spirit had to suffer the pain of their own death. Due to whatever or whomever caused it.

      It was literally a scene that crept up on you, there was the mystery leading up to it and then they (the producers, writers) made it so nuanced, so relatable you knew what happened to the children. And we all will be touched by it at some point, because we'll have children, or even not having children we know that vulnerability of being a child and cry out of love and hope that they are safe somewhere.

    This episode hits hard for me. Oh, man, does it ever hit hard. I lost two younger sisters at different times, both to mysterious circumstances, while in my 20's (I'm currently 32). It's like they just vanished from my life. The most beautiful little sisters an older brother could have - gone. They were two of my best friends. Even with my partner I often feel lost and alone without my sisters. Not a day goes by when I don't think of them. By no means am I a religious man, yet I wait for the day I see my sisters again, just to know they're finally at peace. Will it happen? I'm unsure. Still, I want to believe. 🖤

      I'll be honest with you and say that I kind of totally agree with you, as long as they could have swapped out some of the genius episodes which remain in season 7 (which I always though of as a kind of renaissance for the X Files, in it's overall superiority to season 6) with some of the duffers from season 5 and 6...then yes this would have been a good place to end it..especially if this had had been right at the end of season 7 and maybe slightly extended.
      Then that's where it should have STOPPED..
      I cannot bear to even think about the travesty thay seasons 10 and 11 are, and I'm not much of a fan of 8 & 9 either.😢

      I 100% agree. I love writing/Tv shows and X-Files I definitely in my top 3. For 7 seasons we didn’t know if Samantha was alive and we saw the pain it caused Mulder. It was very emotional watching this scene, I also felt the closure Mulder felt. Carrying all that weight for 7 seasons and it all just came out at once seeing his sister. Amazing. 😁

    I saw this scene when I was young, in the middle of the night, alone in my room. The music by Moby, the scenes ambiance, everything. It messed me up. Like a kind of scared to death... but calming feeling. I remember it stuck with me for years until the Internet/Google/TH-cam existed where I could finally look it up and see it again. This scene means something to me. And I don't know why. This may be the greatest piece of film for a TV series every made. Everything about it is perfect. Every. Single. Thing.

    I only decided to watch the X-files properly from the start because I remembered it being really scary as a kid and wanted to appreciate the series. I had NO idea about the main story arc or the journey of Fox Mulder and the quest to find his missing sister Samantha. Watching this scene, knowing everything he'd been through up to that point, years of uncertainty and doubt, lies and betrayal, to see him FINALLY reunited with his long lost sister .... I was completely overwhelmed with sadness at the realisation of her tragic fate, but at the same time happiness knowing she was truly at peace. The way she looks up to Fox and says, "I'm okay, you can let go" without actually saying it, brought me to tears 🥲

    It still annoys me to this day that she's been dead the whole time. There's so much misdirection through the whole series, so many times Mulder is told she is still alive. Carter has admitted this episode was a retcon on Samantha because they felt this idea was so powerful, and they didn't know of any other way to resolve Samantha. Mulder searching for Samantha represented the backbone of the X-Files for me.
    Despite all that, this scene is heartbreaking yet does also provide 'closure' for Mulder, with the music of Moby to accompany it, it's perfect.

      Nope. Mulder was never told his sister was alive, they just showed him clones and nothing else. Also, Chris Carter didn't want to give Mulder a happy ending with Samantha's story and that was decided from the start. He just didn't know what was going to happen to her.

    • @thenomad014
      @thenomad014 8 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      A couple of times they did tell she was alive though not definitely. The alien bounty hunter told Mulder she was alive and in the Blessing Way episode ghost of Mulder's father told her she was not here in dead-land implying she was alive. Not very credible sources but it seems the scenarists thought of her as alive.

      Well technically this episode said the children didn't die but we're transported away to a safe place in starlight, the nurse who met samantha said she was in the room one moment then men came to get her and the next moment she was gone, so there's some consolation in that, somewhere his sister is still out there but for all purposes she's gone so it's good he had closure.

    • @Jerbsinator
      @Jerbsinator 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I mean, it's pretty obvious from the beginning that Samatha was never going to be found alive....the real Samantha anyway. Honestly the most annoying thing I found about this scene is that they used the wrong actor for Samantha at the end...this person here isn't Samantha, at least not the ones in the pictures Mulder has. I'm assuming they couldn't get the actor so they had to compromise, that's fine I guess but just a nitpick that annoyed me.

    I felt that this Mulder's "sister abduction" story arc deserved a better ending and better explanation than what was eventually presented. Seven years of build up and then they give some obscure explanation and just tell that Samantha has become a "starchild" and was taken by the "walk-ins". This really didn't make any sense actually. Yes, it was beautiful and touching when Mulder hugged his sister's spirit, but it was a rather limp way to end this huge saga on which the entire X-Files mythology was built on. No aliens and no conspiracy, that's not how it was supposed to end. It didn't offer any real closure, not to me at least.

      I'll have to disagree. I thought it was perfect and it touches on the central theme of the show, which is belief and truth and how they arent always the same thing. Mulder believed so hard that his sister was still alive that he became obsessed and it was ruining his life. Only until he finally found the truth, he could finally let go... which is something the man searching for his son in this episode refused to do because he still believed. This was a cathartic moment for Mulder and a huge capstone to his story arc, even if it didn't have a perfectly happy ending.

    • @DarknessIsThePath
      @DarknessIsThePath 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It doesn't erase her abduction at all, it all happened but it was most likely The Smoking Man in her case rather than aliens just like he did with Scully. He gave the order for the experiments like with Jeffrey and she managed to escape at last when she was 14. But for all her courage, she was already doomed to suffer, most of her memories were stolen/erased, subjected to horrible experiments for at least 5 years and she was going to be hunted down by him forever, the only option left for her in order to be happy was to die, and in this case turned to Starlight by these unknown forces. So in essence it doesn't take away his memories of her abduction but it is safe to say that unlike the rest of the Syndicate's families, Samantha was abducted by the Smoking Man.

      It's got something to do with David Duchovny wanting to leave the show. His departure; I think sort of forced the writers hands. I'm not saying it's his fault it went this way, but it wasn't planned for him to leave at this point. I think they probably had something else in mind. Shows these days might just put a different actor in there to play the same character for the sake of the story, I think that would have been equally disappointing, if not more so. The show definitely has a decline with David Duchovny's exit.

    How is it possible that out of all days, you posted this on this day...
    My girlfriend queued up this episode on Netflix tonight, I had no recollection of the episode (nor its significance), though I had watched some of the series when I was a lot younger.
    The song played early on, and I recognized it, but couldn't place where I knew it from. I could feel that it was powerfully important, I even vocalized, "I know this song.... wheres it from??". I had searched for it before, but since I couldn't make out the lyrics nor recall where I'd heard it, I had no place to begin...
    The episode continued on, while I was none the wiser, until this scene began... It all came back to me on a freight train of feels. This was the exact place that I knew the song from, I recalled everything about the scene as it unfolded; the peaking of the music as Mulder sees her, the song quieting as he returns to Scully and the Psychic, Mulder telling him about his son and his denial, I remembered it all, a long lost memory, after like 15+ years...
    I finally remembered where I'd heard the song and why it was so powerful. And now I know the Name

    • @jeffersonadams8711
      @jeffersonadams8711 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think she was filmed for this episode but her shots were ultimately not used. Notice how the kids seem happy here, but Jennette describes them wanting her to look sad or scared. The shot of the girl at 1:07 looks like the close-up shot Jennette describes in her book, but in this one the girl is happy. I think the director shot close-ups of different actors looking sad, happy, etc. and decided which one to use in the editing room. I guess they decided not to use Jennette's shots because they wanted the final scene to be a "happy" one.

    • @jeffersonadams8711

      Also, it is eerie that, in this episode of _The X-files_ , this scene is showing kids who were turned into celestial beings in order to spare them lives of misery and suffering on Earth. A lot of Jennette's early acting roles were so ironic, considering what was going on in her home at the time.
