- Today, we will be taking a look at the final resting place of Robert Pershing Wadlow, who was the tallest man in recorded history. When Robert died aged 22 in 1940, he weighed 439 pounds, was buried in a 10-foot-long 1,000 pound casket and was 8' 11.1" tall.

Thank you for your nice and respectful video. My mother (1926 - 2019) grew up a few blocks away from Robert Wadlow's home in Upper Alton and knew him. Mom told me that he always had a moment to say Hello and chat with her. He was never treated as a freak in his home town and was a well-respected gentleman.
That is incredible! Robert Wadlow visited my hometown during one of his courtesy tours for the shoe company and there’s many neat photos of when he came through town. He truly was a gentle giant!

@@Buisness1 Hello Bill. Robert Wadlow's shoes were custom made by International Shoe Company in St Louis. Both my father and my paternal grandfather worked there. International Shoe made a variety of shoe brand names including Peters, Florsheim, Poll Parrott and Red Goose. International Shoe diversified out of the shoe business and became Interco. I don't believe it still exists although its headquarters building is still there at 1501 Washington Avenue in St Louis. My understanding is that Robert Wadlow served in a promotional capacity for International Shoe. The forms used in making his shoes still exist but I am not sure where they are. One set may be at the Alton History Museum in Alton Illinois.

Robert Wadlow was unfortunately the victim of his times. His great height was caused by a pituitary gland disorder. At the time, brain surgery was considered highly risky, so this disorder was not corrected. The fatal infection he contracted would also be easily remedied today with antibiotics.

The actual spot he is laid to rest is raised up taller than the surrounding area too. His vault was very long and reinforced and you can tell it just by looking at the ground where he is buried.

To have a size 37 shoes custom made for you and then to travel to show the excellent quality of the shoes I am sure was exciting to you. I am glad I heard about you Robert. As a man standing 6' 6".5 inches tall, I was made to feel like a freak all of my life. I can't even imagine how this poor guy was made to feel. A full 2.5 feet taller than myself...what torment he must have felt. RIP Mr. Wadlow.

Thank you for adding that he was buried in a vault. I was looking online at pictures of his grave and noticed that the earth outlining where his coffin is was a little bit more raised than his other family members. Now i know why
And he died of a metal brace to support his ankle that turned into a infecyion

From what I understand his shoe size went from 37 to 40 at the time of his death. He was also 9 ft tall at the time of his death as he kept growing. He is on my family tree.

@@TheAutisticBrony Robert Wadlow is on my family tree. The information on my family tree says he was measured at 8'11.1 and right after he died they measured him at 9'0. How accurate that is I am not sure of. From what I understand he did not stop growing.

Wow a Very Tall Young Lad . And My Brother thinks He has big Feet at size 12 .'Think Young Lad had an Amazing Growth Hormone . That refused to Let Him Stop Growing . In this I truly find it very sad for this Young Lad . I know of a Young Lad from when I was a School Supervisor . He was 14 years old . He stood 6 feet tall . It really brothered him . He would come to our Store and Talk with me about How scared he was . Of being so very tall and so young .

What really astounded me was that you can see how large the actual vault is as well, just by looking at his grave itself. The ground is raised up in the area he was laid to rest, I’m assuming due to his vault being reinforced.
