    I didn't think she killed it because it was deformed and out of mercy towards the baby, but because she was convinced that that baby should not exist. In the scene when she is confessing with the priest, she says 'this is not God's work', to which he replies 'if it's not, then why isn't he doing anything to stop it?' and she remains silent. To me, this is the moment where she thought 'then I am going to stop it, THIS is what God put me here for, THIS is why he saved my life'. And since that moment she was determined to end with all that devilish work. That's why she burned down the lab and killed the three people responsible, because she didn't need to do all that just to escape, she had to stop it. And that's also why she killed the baby, to finally put an end to it. And the movie ends right there too.

      Well, yes. I suppose that we are forced to go through labor when giving birth to a child. But the reward is worth what little suffering women go through when bringing life into the world.
      But forced pregnancy? We aren't living in, nor have we ever lived in, a script from handmaid's tale. Forced pregnancies are a ficticious jedi mind trick that only works when debating pro-choice and any perks pro choice claims to have for women.

    I actually interpreted the ending as a continuation of the theme of "sometimes satan masquerades as an angel of light." Cecelia was strategically taking out the people who knew how the process worked and removing any components they needed for that. The baby was the last piece (and I kind of thought the rasping was less "it's a deformity" and more "that is not a baby")

  • @LateCambrian

I took the tooth falling out and her saying something along the lines of “this isn’t gods will” when the nail was peeling off to be signs that it was actually demonic. since what they’re doing would be sacrilege. and then I assumed it was like a satan baby and that’s why she killed it

    The ending felt like more of a social commentary on bodily autonomy. Cecilia did not consent to having a baby in the first place, so she terminated it. If Cecilia kills the baby because of a deformity, the subtext is less impactful. Bodily autonomy is empowering. Eugenics not so much.

    [Spoiler Alert] I think from the get-go she really doesn't like the baby and there's this scene where she told the priest that this isn't right. If you look at the ending, i think she didn't even looked at the baby until when she's about to crash it. My take was she is not feeling sad about the baby, rather angry and the last scene was an emotional catharsis for her letting go of the injustice and anger she felt

    • @siobhan98
      @siobhan98 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      Totally agree. I actually gasped when she went to the rock. I think the movie has some really radical feminist politics that ppl are overlooking. The ending is so chilling because it’s ambiguous whether the child is the 2nd coming or the anti-Christ. The way it pants seems so creepy and animal like, but at the same time Jesus was known not to cry at his birth. Realistically would Jesus not be panting like that after being born if he wasn’t crying? The baby seems to be red (like a devil) but that could also just be blood or something. Either way we can be pretty sure that she couldnt be 100% on what the baby was which makes her decision a really radical display of self-determination imo (not necessarily in a good way)

I’d also like to warn you that The First Omen is similar to immaculate but has particularly traumatizing birth scenes, one in particular was a lot more severe/body horror heavy. Personally, I loved it because it focused so much on tension building and the feeling of not knowing what’s real or not, plus the way it was shot added to the unsettling atmosphere so much. It really hits those triggers of forced pregnancy and powerlessness though.

      I feel like the insemination, the baby, or Isabelle didnt need to be over explained. IVF exists, theres so many ways to create pregnancy that doesnt require sex. I feel like the baby being demonic vs malformed is purposefully meant to be interpreted by the viewer. Isabelle wanted to be the person who would get pregnant. Insemination doesnt mean itll stick. Im sure they tried on almost all of the nuns, the older nun who called her Saint Cecilia had the crosses on her feet. Implying that she was a potential surrogate who got pregnant and tried to escape. The pregnancy probably failed. Isabelle was just on board and wanted it to be her.

    Unfortunately this entire movie was ruined for me because I was sandwiched between 2 of the WORST couples in the history of movie goers. The 2 teenage girls next to me WOULD NOT get off their damn phones the ENTIRE movie ON FULL BRIGHTNESS. AND EVERY LITTLE THING that happened they would gasp and loudly start talking/laughing, THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE MOVIE. Theres a scene where a bird hits a window and the 2 gorls were CACKLING and screaming as if it was the scariest/funnest thing to ever happen. And then during the quiet scenes of the movies they would just loudly start talking at the screen and saying things like "THERES SOMEONE BEHIND HER. BET. THERES A JUMPSCARE COMING. BET." THROUGHOUT THE WHOLEEEE MOVIEEEE. AND THEN the couple to the other side of me were these 2 old people who would NOT stop narrating the whole damn movie. There's a scene in the movie were Sidneys character throws up a tooth and the old lady next to me goes "omg! She threw up a tooth!" And then during another scene she goes "Shes walking barefoot!!" And during another scene she goes "OMG! HER WATER BROKE!" AT FULL VOLUME. LIKE WE GET IT. WE'RE WATCHING THE MOVIE TOO. WE'RE NOT BLIND. YOU DONT NEED TO NARRATE THE WHOLE MOVIE FOR US. OMGGGG It was the WORST movie experience of my life. I couldn't even focus on the damn movie. What happened to movie theater etiquette????? I was SO angry. Also at the end of the movie when sidney is doing you know what, the people I was sandwiched between were laughing uncontrollably over sidney sweenys scream.... it was insufferable.

    I honestly didn’t have too high of hopes going into this film especially as the whole nun/church tropes have been done to death at this point, however I was very pleasantly surprised with some of the choices this movie made. The music was amazing especially since they incorporated a lot of it into the movie instead of feeling that it had a soundtrack thrown on top of it. I, admittedly had not seen any of Sydney’s previous works but she was amazing in this. And the ending, I didn’t know how they were going to pull it off, I will say it was a bold choice to do what they did. Like you though, I’m glad they did it tastefully

      @@PossessedbyHorror Effectiveness of jumpscare is rather subjective. I had a guy in front of me who was clearly in his fourties and in all the predictable jumpscares he literally shaked on his seat (my feet were touching it), while I did not flinched as I saw all coming. You are clearly a seasoned spectator, most won't be. This movie was targeted towards mainstream. Were the jumpscares predictable, to me totally as I probably watched over 500 horror movies, for many they won't be ..... What is effective will significantly vary from person to person and their viewing history ......................

    • @ExaBella
      @ExaBella 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Fully agree with you, a good movie would have a combination of different types of jumpscares. For some, this will be the first horror movie they will see and they were not that bad and well executed .... For someone who watches tonnes of horror on weekly basis won't be as effective but that does not mean movies should not contain this type of jumpscares, at all...
      As why do all movie reviewers all seem to decide to hate on jumpscares, well because most humans do tend towards herd like behaviour.....

    What disturbed me most was that there was even equipment inside the convent whereby you could watch the development of the fetus on the screen. Presumably there was need to use it on the nuns fairly often.
    As for the ending, I won't say it was really that surprising. Sydney was faced with Rosemary's choice at the end of Polanski's film. It could only end either one way or the other. In any case, the ending was left unambiguous since we didn't see what happened. Maybe she changed her mind at the last moment and missed, and that left open the possibility of a sequel.

      I would agree but I don't think so. Because we know Cecilia was really involved with her faith, and this heavily did affect her decision in the final act too. Because at multiple times, she says it's not right, that it's not a work of God. That they're trying to play God. So I think with what the priest said to her about how God isn't stopping them if hasn't willed them too. That's when she realized her "purpose" wasn't to give birth to the baby. It was to put an end to all of it. To all of the suffering that the women were put through too. So she does that with killing the people responsible. And then the baby, because it is 1. obviously in pain and 2. to her, it's not a work of God, it shouldn't exist.

While it likely in reality wasn’t her face being touched like it was so oddly in the dream, she does fall pregnant after passing out that night, so it could very well have been her mind typing to come up with an odd coping nightmare of what happened during her being unconscious.

    Hello there. In real life, I am an unbelievable Nun (religious sister). I stopped mentioning it online years ago because people just wouldn’t believe me, based on my profile picture (and possibly my subscriptions)? Definitely not my uploads, because those fit. It made me sad.
    Stereotypes can be exhausting and it’s insulting to other sisters when people say one is “too pretty to be a nun”. It implies that a person needs to be plain to work for God or that a more traditionally attractive woman can’t have a spiritual calling or should prioritise being available for sex. A very male view.
    You are correct, not all Nuns (or religious sisters) start out old. There is usually, in fact, a maximum age for joining, so that being a nun (or a monk, which is the male version of the same thing) doesn’t become just a retirement alternative. Still, the majority of nuns in the UK (and in the USA where I assume you are) are very old, and convents and monasteries are simply dying off. That is why young people today associate being a nun with being old. Most are now, in those places. If you watch older movies (A Nuns story, Black Narcissus, The Bells of Saint Mary’s ) that wasn’t always the case. In several countries, it still isn’t.
