'A top experience': 107-year-old Wisconsin WWII veteran at 80th D-Day Anniversary

- A Wisconsin World War Two veteran is in Normandy France to commemorate a remarkable moment in history - the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
Lighthouse reporter Charles Benson first introduced us to 107-year-old Reynolds Tomter and his journey to this historical event.
Reynolds Tomter not only witnessed history - but he's also now helping us remember it. He is not a D-Day veteran, but he played a role in the war as a U.S. Merchant Marine.
Tomter was invited to the 80th anniversary with 60 other World War II heroes from around the county - thanks to the Old Glory Honor Flight organization.
It's a moment in history Reynolds Tomter hopes the world will never forget. All week, the oldest living Merchant Marine was celebrated in France by a grateful nation.
“It has been a top experience in my life and I'm so fortunate,” said Tomter.

You`d better remember how France cowardly capitulated 6 weeks after the German invasion. Thanks to Stalin and Truman you are the great(?!) power. Ha-ha . You are good fighting with bare-assed in the jungles? but not always successfully , to tell the truth.

The Greatest Generation has such good values.
But they are leaving each year.
Wonder how many will still be here for the next Anniversary
You do realize there are a few 97-year-old "KIDS", among the 80th anniversary boys. We might see a 90th anniversary veteran going back one more time! -- THAT WILL BE INSANE if we have 1 left in 10 years.

When I was 20, back in 1969, I met a sailor who had been in the merchant marine and was sunk 4 times crossing the Atlantic I did not realize what this meant then, but now I do.❤
Sir, we owe you and all the others a debt that we can not ever pay back. You stood tyranny and oppression in the eye, and said "This ends...Here."

Good man, great soldier. Them merchant marines were the backbone of the seas theh were the first line of defense against all the uboats and plnes attacking our allies ships full of goods nd people neccisary for us to of won that war. My grandfather was 101st airborn 41 to 45 belgium holland france and germany. He was taken back by a organization to every place he helped liberate, the concentration camps that he and his guys were the first to see and confirm as a real thing and not a myth, they gave him the whole ceramonies like they did this amazing man and treated my grandfather like a celebrity across the entirety of europe he couldent of paid for a beer or meal if he wanted to. It was a real highlight and the first time he had been back to those place since he fought there. Really greatfull for the organizations who do these things for those men.

My friend Frank served as British merchant navy I work with him in the 70s he told me once you took the lifeboat they stopped their pay. He was sung three times. One time he spent weeks on a lifeboat. his mother knew something was wrong when they stopped her allotment., they lost half their crew , the Arctic convoys were the worst to Murmansk Russia
