From what I understand this song was in protest of the Vietnam War. The American Woman they are talking about is the statue of liberty. Written and recorded by The Guess Who in 1970 and reached #1 on the US Billboard charts for 3 weeks. You should check it out. The Guess Who has a lot of amazing songs.
For awhile I thought I was the only one that knew that
Totally agree with you. Was around when the Who sang it & in the 90's when Lenny sang it.
I heard Burton Cummings on the Howard Stern show say it's about the difference between Canadian (where he's from) and American women and how he'll stick with the Canadian women. Maybe I heard it wrong. The Guess Who had so many great songs and Burton sang many of them on Sterns show.
@@dianesaienni5466 I've heard Burton Cummings change stories another time, one interview he said he didn't like women anymore, another he said the opposite, that's why it's good not to lie you will tell the same thing all the time.
you're right
It Ain't Over Till It's Over is a ballad that you should listen to by Lenny Kravitz.
Yep!
Yep!!
Great song
I think it is one of his best.
Most definitely….
Asia & BJ, his "Fly Away" and "It Ain't Over 'til It's Over" are next for you!!
It's criminal that the "Guess Who" hasn't been inducted into the U.S. Music Hall of Fame. Love me some Lenny though. Great production. Carry On!
This song alone should have put The Guess Who in the rock hall!
Whole catalogs compared, the guess who were a better band than The Who. Fight me.
Only Canadian band as far as I know in the RRHF is Rush and look how long it took them! Yes, most definitely The Guess Who should be in it!
AGREE!!!
Lenny always makes me smile -- so talented! "Fly Away" and "Are you Gonna go my Way" (live)
I do not understand why LENNY KRAVITZ is not better known with the new generations, but currently there are no artists as complete and interesting as him. A rocker, multi instrumentalist, multi racial, and generally a Cool Cat. BELIVE , HEAVEN HELP and IT AIN'T OVER 'TIL IT'S OVER, they are wonderful and calmer songs, to which you can react.
Edgar...I didn't even catch on till not a long time ago and I'm 58. I think because you didn't hear him much on the radio and didn't have no. 1 songs.
Stand By My Woman, Black Girl, and Fields of Joy are all not as hard and show different sides of his voice.
The newer generations know him from the huger games just like they have no idea that Dr Dre is more than headphones
You should listen to Lenny, It ain't over til it's over
I said on their previous video I’ll never know why he wasn’t bigger than he was. He had every attribute needed to be an absolute legend.
Asia and BJ. Lenny sings a song called, LET LOVE RULE. He pays tribute to his influence from the Beatles. And showcases his voice for you.
Wow. I never knew that. Love the insight!!!
One of his best tracks for sure
Lenny did a good job on this song BUT THE Original song is killer.
Yes.. I like this but love the original Guess Who version WITH the the extended intro. A MUST listen!!
Nah after he released this it became Lenny’s song
Lenny’s mother was Mrs. Willis on the Jeffersons back in the 70’s. She was the first interracial couple on tv.
And she hooked up with a white guy in real life, giving us Lenny.
@@elbruces
Lenny then hooked up with Lisa Bonet who was the daughter on The Cosby Show and who herself was from a biracial couple, giving us Zoe.
@@elbruces a jewish lawyer from Manhatten ( his dad)
Please do the original too by The Guess Who. 1970 ( Video) ☮️💜 Lenny’s was 1999
Love that Lenny added some funk to this, made it his own..the original is a killer as well!!! Original by The Guess Who.
Lenny's mother was the late, great Roxie Roker---"Helen" on "The Jeffersons" (the one married to the white man).
Roxie and Al Roker (The Today Show weatherman) are cousins---so, Lenny Kravitz is related to Al Roker!!
Roxie Roker played Helen Willis on the Jeffersons was his mother, actress Zoe Kravitz is his daughter, Weatherman Al Roker on NBC today’s show is his cousin and Lisa Bonet who played Denice on the Cosby show. who is now married to Jason Momosa name spelled wrong was his exwife Zoe mother
I didnt know that about Al Roker!
This is a cover song. This was originally recorded by Canadian group The Guess Who in 1970. A largely misinterpreted song, it is actually a tribute to Canadian women.
I always thought it was a protest song.
You are confused about what the entire song is about ...
@@ToddSauve The song's lyrics have been the matter of debate, often interpreted as an attack on U.S. politics (especially the draft). Cummings, who composed the lyrics, said in 2013 that they had nothing to do with politics. "What was on my mind was that girls in the States seemed to get older quicker than our girls and that made them, well, dangerous. When I said 'American woman, stay away from me,' I really meant 'Canadian woman, I prefer you.' It was all a happy accident."

@@metalmark1214 I wrote a lengthy reply for Asia and BJ and it is a separate reply all by its lonesome on this Comments section. I gave them the reasoning behind the song provided by Randy Bachman, the lead guitarist for the Guess Who. He came up with the guitar parts and they applied a miserable session at the US border that they had with customs agents to the writing of the song. Apparently the version you gave is reputed to be from Burton Cummings, the lead vocalist for the band. If that is the case I'm pretty sure Burton was just pulling a joke on everyone. They even played the song at the White House in front of President Richard Nixon!
The original intent for this song written in the mid-60s / Vietnam era, was that American Woman meant the statue - Lady Liberty. ie bad feelings about the intent etc.
Lenny Kravitz - Whole Lotta Love (35th Kennedy Center Honors, Live, 2012, HD) !!! This is really good too !!!!
wasn't it The Foo Fighters first, than Kid Rock than Lenny Kravitz . I hope you got to watch the 3!That was an excellent show- they also have a performance there to honor Sting whos in audience with his wife an Bruno Mars steps out an sings " Message in a bottle" to Sting -when it was just about done alot of people in his life got up on stage and Sting an his wife were thrilled and honored you could see it in his face another excellent performance ! here on you tube
Wife here..Wow!!.More Lenny Kravitz..!!Remember when he came on the scene.., knew he was going to be a MEGA rockstar..!! I agree his voice is soooo amazing..!!Please check out "Let Love Rule"..
Leonard Albert Kravitz (born May 26, 1964) is an American singer-songwriter, record producer, multi-instrumentalist, and actor. His style incorporates elements of rock, blues, soul, R&B, funk, jazz, reggae, hard rock, psychedelic, pop, folk, and ballads.
@@badkitty4922 ...and she sang the theme song for The Jefferson's show also!!!👍
Jan'et Dubious, who played Wilnona Woods on Good Times sang theme song to the Jeffersons, not Roxie Roker.
Dubois, misspelled her last name.
@@GonRogue-85 ...crap....my bad!!! i always thought it was her!!!
@@badkitty4922 ....aghhh...apparently I was wrong on that. But I knew it was someone famous/actor on TV....my bad like I said....but yes to all you mentioned!!
Your correct "soul rock!"
Love Lenny's cover of the Guess Who's "American Woman".
There’s also a video of Lenny and Burton Cummings of the guess who performing this together. Burton Cummings said at the time American women were. a little faster than Canadian women
Fly away is one of my faves of his! This is a cover of the Guess Who's song of the same name..
Always on the Run....Lenny Kravitz and Slash..it's so amazing!!! They wrote it together. They actually went to high school together in L.A., knew who each other was, but didn't hang out til much later
I don't see how slash is British not American
@@sarahpagett9191 He's both. His father was British, his mother American. He was born in England then he and his mother moved back to the US when he was a kid. He said he's very proud of his British side.
Oh yes, that first Kravitz "Ungh!" grabs me every time. I know the original and I've heard it many times but this one, THIS one...
Not sure if anyone else has commented this but Lenny performed this with Prince at Paisley Park in 1999 and it's one of my fav performances of this song! The two of them up there just jamming to this song, it's a fun watch!
Is that the one where they come thru the crowd like boxers getting ready to jump in Ring there posse escorting them thru? Its on you tube thats how i saw it ?
@@lindaaugone382 yes!!
@@Joelyne37 That was excellent Joelyne have a great Labor day weekend!
Can’t Get You Off My Mind is my favorite slow song by Lenny Kravitz. He wrote the song for his then wife Lisa Bonet (she played Denise on the Cosby Show). It is such a beautiful song!! Asia will love it!!
P.S. Another fun fact is Lenny’s mom played Helen on The Jefferson’s
Just some suggestions. Question Mark & The Mysterians, - 96 Tears. Eric Burden and The Animals, - Monterey. Eric Burden and War, - Spill the Wine! Would love to see your reactions to these songs. 96 Tears is the first song I can remember ever grooving to it is the keyboard vibe.😉
great suggestions Sherman❣
There is a live version on youtube where he plays this same song with, Prince. Check it out.
Fields of joy is understated as an example
He was a newer one that was not main stream. It's name is Raise Vibration. The video is fabulous. Women will love it.
I can't read through all the comments so this may be redundant. The original song written and recorded by the Guess Who a Canadian band was about Canada not needing to wallow in the mire with the USA. American Woman was actually America the country. "I don't need your war machines, I don't need your ghetto scenes" was a condemnation about the US way of life.
Soul rock like Jimi Hendrix! lol. Similar swag, musical talent and good looks helps them too, The ladies love them. BTW, he and Lisa Bonet (actress) had a daughter, Zoey. Zoey is also and actress and was once the singer for a indie punk rock group (Elevator Fight). She's gorgeous just like her mother. Great looking family. Lenny and Lisa are both biracial. Lenny's mother (Roxie Roker) was an actress, too. Al Roker (cousin) is a long time national new weatherman (now on NBC).
Lisa Bonet and Lenny divorced. Lisa remarried Jason Mamoa (Games of Thrones, Aquaman) they had 2 children. Lenny was able be friends and co-parents. And just separated recently.
@@deborahtaylor3617 True.
The official video of this is really cool
The song was written by a Canadian group, The Guess Who! =D Love Lenny, great reaction, excellent suggestion Marie!
Songfacts: Randy Bachman called "American Woman" an "antiwar protest song," explaining that when they came up with it on stage, both the band and the audience had a problem with the Vietnam War. Said Bachman: "We had been touring the States. This was the late '60s, they tried to draft us, send us to Vietnam. We were back in Canada, playing in the safety of Canada where the dance is full of draft dodgers who've all left the States."
Lenny Kravitz is absolutely the deal!I'll be whatever woman he wants me to be.lol!
If I am not mistaken this song was re-recorded by Lenny for the Austin Powers 2 movie. Austin teamed up with an American agent (played by Heather Graham) who was also in Lenny's video for the song.
The song had two interpretation, but it was thought up on the spot, as the guitarists broke a string , and was tuning it and the riff developed and rest of the band joined in. You can look up the whole story, but pretty amazing. So I read that it was because they felt American women aged fast than Canadian women, and the other story it was a anti-Vietnam song.
Loved Lenny Kravitz version, and so other songs to discover, Low, We can get it all together, Superlove, Calling all Angels, Let love rule. Just a few.
Lenny is Authentic. Love all his music
You have to watch this live! You will get why she said this was for Asia.
Love me some Lenny!!! One of the sexiest men in rock!!! You can't listen to this except at HIGH volume. 😁😁
This is a cover. The original was done by a Canadian band, The Guess Who.
“It Ain’t Over Til it’s Over” harkens back to Motown, and showcases his voice beautifully.
Asia please Don't Be Insulted......American Woman is a cover song from the Rock band of the 60's, The Guess Who. And the song is talking about The Country of America.....War machines and Ghettto scenes are apart of the American Society.......He's talking about "America" or "American History," in general. Go back and listen to the song again......and yeah Lenny does do R & B or Soul music on his albums. He is classified by Music critics as, "Alternative Rock" and has been in that Classification since the 90's.
I think it’s beautiful that music transcends all other ideas about how we are different and speaks to our common human thread….thank you for highlighting this during such a tough time. Y’all are doing your part in so many ways to bring people together, I am so grateful to you for that!😘😘Americans are not so divided. Our love of country and each other will NEVER be broken. It will only strengthen with every challenge to our unity. United we stand…..I know it seems weird, but as a social scientist, I clearly see the benefits to what y’all do. 😘❤️💙💛😘🥰
Love this!! Ty for reacting!!
Our pleasure!
Mother’s Finest, the original black funk rock band 🎸
Ughhh love him ❣️
I'm pretty sure that Asia and BJ already reacted to the original song by The Guess Who if I'm not mistaken.
This was originally sing by the Canadian band “The Guess Who” and Lenny Kravitz recorded this version which was used on the soundtrack for the second Austin Powers movie, “The Spy Who Shagged Me”. In the movie, Austin Powers is blown away by the introduction of the American spy Felicity Shagwell, and this is the song playing in the background. It was fire and she was smashing baby, yeah!
Great reaction, this is a great cover. The guess who is the band that originally performed the song. But Lenny Kravitz puts a great spin on it great artist
Asia watch the original video. He is mesmerizing. This is a remake of a guess who song but he makes it feel so him
Lenny is definitely a rocker but he has some lighter music too. You should listen to It Ain't Over Til Its Over. He wrote it when him and Lisa Bonet were about to get a divorce in the early 90s. The man was hurting. That whole album called Mama Said is a whole different vibe than his rock music. It is so chill and so good.
This song was written by Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman two Canadians that were with the band called "The Guess Who" that was released in 1970. He (lenny Kravitz) was married to Lisa Bonet. It was originally a Protest song on America's Vietnam War. Although Burton Cummings said latter it was about the difference between American Women and Canadian Women. So your guess is as good as mine now. Lenny Kravitz is a little older than my younger brother. Other songs "Are You Gonna Go My Way", "Low" and "It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over". These are some of his songs. By the way He is all over the place as far as Genres are concern.
He’s got a lot of range, his R&B songs (like “Believe in me”) really hit
The original band who did this was the Guess Who and they're Canadian. What they are referring to is "America, keep your values and laws" BELOW the 49th parallel!!!
He is Fine Fine
This song is originally done by "The Guess Who", who are a Canadian Band.
Don't feel some type of way Asia Lenny loves his black women!🤣 The song is a cover. His mom is Roxie roker the actress from the Jeffersons, his ex wife is Lisa bonet from the Cosby show and his daughter is Zoe Kravitz! AL roker is his 2nd cousin too. His voice reminds people of Jimi hendrix who was in a soul group b4 the fame.
This was an anti-war or America always interfering in others countries when we have our own issues. This is the best remake of the original. Lenny Kravitz is one of the hottest sexiest rockstar ever!!! It ain’t over till it’s over, to hear his soft voice. Watch his videos to see his energy. Love you both ❤️
I believe the Guess Who were a Canadian band? Which puts another unique spin on this song...
Lenny's "It Ain't Over til It's Over" and "I Belong to You" will showcase his voice for you. His music is multifaceted, it's an experience every time.
The Chamber-Live from Paris is a great live version that gives the full Lenny experience. Really need to do that video. 😁
I'm telling you, you should listen to Lenny Kravitz song I belong to you. I believe he wrote it for his daughter. I know it's not one of his big huge monster hits but it goes straight to the heart for me.
And the song American Woman is about war, in particular America's war in Vietnam and other stuff going on that we had no business being in and sustained serious losses.
My aunt was obsessed with Lenny so back in the day she would drag us kids to his concerts. I've seen him like 4 times. That man is sexy as hell on stage 🤣 and I loved that he had a female drummer
The original artist of this song, The Guess Who, are from Canada.
Asia…..! The short hair🤌🏽 😘😘🔥
Asia, look up Fields of Joy by Lenny Kravitz for his crooner voice. Also butterfly.
*It ain't over till it's over* is more of a throw back sound that displays his vocals. He's a little bit of Jimi Hendrix and Prince in his style of singing and playing.
@Scapito...yes!!❤
It aint over Lenny K
Yum. He's so fine. Lenny Kravitz wow
Lenny's a stone cold fox! And what a talent!
This song was written by The Guess Who.
They were Canadian.
His more recent take on the original Guess Who song is just incredible!
"It Ain't Over 'Till It's Over" is a good 'gear shift' of style for Lenny! But, as always, it's all Rock; everything else is just a sub-genre of Rock&Roll!!!
👍💖A&B😘🔥
It ain't over till it's over displays Lenny Kravitz voice perfectly
IT AINT OVER 'TILL ITS OVER has gotta be your next Lenny Kravitz reaction. It's more Soul/R&B then the Rock that you're used to from Lenny.
This version has always worked for me.
Love Lenny! Some other greats by him are Fly Away,It Ain`t Over Til It`s Over and Again..Keep On Rockin'
You could do an entire week on Lenny where his music catalog is so vast. It’s a lesser known tune of his but you should check out “Fields of Joy.”
“I just can’t get you off mind mind” is what you’re looking for. Slow jam. Lenny is his own genre.😎
You too are the best reaction people on here I love watching yawls reaction to different songs. Keep the good work up.
You both should listen and react to Kylie minogue disco album and Kylie minogue become the first and only female artist to have five decades of number one albums in the British U.K. album charts
It is an anti-American song and has nothing to do with an actual girlfriend. The original song was by the Canadian band Guess Who. American Woman is a reference to the Statue of Liberty. Canadians didn't agree with American politics and the Vietnam War. "I don't need your war marchines, I don't need your ghetto scenes".
Lenny's mother was actress Roxie Roker who played Helen Willis on the sitcom " The Jeffersons" in the 60's. Good cover of the Guess Who song.💯👍👍♥️
This is cover of a Guess Who song that was basically an anti-American song. The original guitar player co-founded Bachman Turner Overdrive.
Listen to Lenny Kravitz - Again. It's a ballad
If you watch the video, there's 2 scenes you'll have to blurr out. So it won't get demonetized
Originally A Canadian rock band singing about an American women!,🇨🇦😊🇺🇸
"Sister", live at wembly arena is amazing and he can really sing!!
The music video is awesome. A young Heather Graham is in it.
Need to listen to this song by the "Guess Who". They were very poplar when I was in high school. I still have this song by them on eight track tape!
It's worth hearing the original from the Guess Who - a Canadian band.
This is another song protesting the Viet Nam war.
Great cover - he has so many good jams! Album after album. I had them!
He has other joints but one of my favorites is "Fly Away".....I'm sure you both will like it
Asia and BJ, the song is an anti-Vietnam war song from the Guess Who in 1970. The band almost got railroaded into the US army when they were crossing the US border for a tour. The border customs agents tried to get them to sign some paperwork, without the band knowing what it said, which would allow the customs officials to force them into the army. The band turned around and went back to Canada. It was a grotesquely divided society at the time, with some real, genuine scoundrels in positions of authority--like on the border. So this experience became the basis for a song about the ultra-nationalistic types champing at the bit to force people into the army so they could send them to Vietnam. There are ugly people in every society and every people. The image of the Statue of Liberty was much contested by various segments of the societal fight, but for the Guess Who they were just highlighting how ridiculous the whole affair had become. Factions had turned even a symbol of freedom into something pretentious and despicable by their actions. The Guess Who have absolutely NOTHING against American women, much as some misguided souls have tried to say they did. 🙄
I'm sure Lenny Kravitz knows the whole sordid story behind the song and is not trying to criticize American women by re-recording it either.
guess who main line up was burton cummings and randy bachmann who left the band to form bachmann-turner-overdrive
The Bachman from Bachman Turner Overdrive was the lead guitarist on the original with the Guess Who
I love the original by The Guess Who. I do think Lenny did it justice. I love both versions.
He played this song with Prince. That's a badass video
It's a political song originally written by Canadians. "American Woman" means "America". Anti-Vietnam War song. I love Lenny's remake, but the guy looks so good that I can't quite believe he wants women - metaphorical, Canadian, American or otherwise - to get away from him. Heck, I think he's hot, and I'm a widower with 2 kids, ha haha
Love Lenny but the original is awesome , Lenny opened up for Aerosmith at the MCI Center in DC when we saw them in the mid 200’s
Lenny had a broken leg and still performed great .Th Al’s for the great reaction. Good vibes and ,much love 🤗🙏❤️
