      The 1135 was turned up...but the 354's all liked to smoke when working. The 6180 w/a 365 ci, not turned up (115 hp), will chop and not smoke. I have even chopped with the 596 (90 hp) and got along OK. In all fairness there is quite a bit of material going through with hybrid forage sorghum (a lot more tonnage than corn).

    Nice MF lineup there! I just bought a 1135 with 3200 hours on the clock, beautiful one-owner tractor.

      Thanks! Dad's 1135 is at about 4500 now and as original as possible.

    NICE little Vid on silage... Question... What is "silage" and how is it used..? Thanks, Gordon

      Silage is feed for cattle. You can chop and ensile (make silage) many different crops for the purpose of feeding cattle. We make silage as it is a very efficient way to feed cattle, sorghum silage requires minimum inputs organically, and it provides a warm/quality feed for winter time. BTW, is that a BMW R-bike in your avatar?? I own and love a K.

      Hi... I am from India and lot of Sorghum is cultivated here. I read that most farmers prefer corn silage but you are making Sorghum Silage. Also Corn Silage is harvested while corn is about 45 days old where as it seems that you are harvesting sun dried Sorghum or is it that video settings? Can you please explain me how Sorghum Silage is made in detail? Pls email me at prashamk (at) Gmail.com

      @@prashamk Just saw this comment. We allow the sorghum to fully mature. Then a couple days after a killing frost, we start chopping. The stalks on this sorghum are very thick (over an inch), and retain their moisture very well. We are going for maximum tonnage and starch (grain yield) as we mix the silage into a ration for beef cattle. You would chop sooner if you were feeding dairy! We simply press the sorghum in a trench with the tractor and allow it to ensile.

    I'm looking into doing a small stand of silage sorghum for the coming year. But I don't now much about it. Any tips on growing it I.e Harvest times, planting with corn planter or drill, and how much manure do you recommend per acre?

    • @GeigerFarm
      @GeigerFarm  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      We plant in 30" rows, population 65,000 to 75,000. Culturally, it is very similar to corn. Sorghum is a very good scavenger of nutrients and doesn't require a lot of fertility. The soil temp must be warm for good germination. On good ground, the tonnage can exceed 20t/a. Better have the forage harvester is good condition...Good luck!

      20 lbs to the acre and all the manure ya got

    Do you plant this with your kinze finger type corn planter? Or do you use cell plates?

    • @GeigerFarm
      @GeigerFarm  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Use the cell plates. There are several different sizes...just figure out seeds/lb and what your desired pop is. I even used the kinze plate to plant the cowpeas!

      @LVFFarmVlogs 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dang, I was hoping you would say that the finger units would work!

      @@GeigerFarm which cell plate would work best for strictly sudangrass? Should I go with a high volume sorghum or would a soybean plate work, or something else?

    • @GeigerFarm
      @GeigerFarm  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@farming4g I used the Kinze Red--milo high rate plates for sudangrass and then set rate at 200 thou and it works pretty good

      I would agree from the mechanical age! But my 6180 outpulls it, is more efficient, more comfortable, and has better efficiency ;)!
