Underrated by some, even bashed by others, this aria has such an exquisite dreamlike quality that I can’t help calling it one of Korngold‘s true gems... 💎 And as for Joseph Schmidt‘s rendition - it‘s among the very best ever, at least ranging among the top three recordings of the aria, which, in the opera, is performed by a soprano (on record by many tenors as well; later in the opera, slightly diversified, it’s picked up again in a duet). But, sorry, when you hear JS perform it, forget about the sopranos, even the best ones... he carries the soul of the aria right there in his voice... ⭐️💖⭐️ Thank you for the wonderful post, Steve! 🙏🍀
Waking up in the middle of the night I suddenly realized that I got something mixed up... Korngold himself must have been mesmerized by the melody and lyrics of what started out as „Marietta‘s Song“, but was picked up again later... So we have an aria, a duet... and an aria again with a diversified ending - „Hier gibt es kein Auferstehen“ instead of „Glaub es gibt ein Auferstehen“... Is that correct? I guess I must listen to the complete opera again to sort it out. After all, my memory has seen better days... Please excuse any confusion I may have caused... and listen to the opera! (Then let me know what you found out... 😉)
