Fascinating interpretation. It's more sparsely pedaled and brings out the polyphony to a greater degree than the other versions I'm familiar with. I suppose Gilels takes the top spot for me just for the impossible beauty of his singing legato but this is absolutely world class. And to think Ginzburg was written off by some as a "mere virtuoso"... This is phenomenal musicianship.

I also agree with the others who feel that this interpretation is unsurpassed. IMHO, Ginzburg finds something in the music that no one else does - not even Richter or Gilels. Perhaps I should change my screen name, at least for when I am on this page ;-)
Having heard only a few minutes of this one and much of the Gilels recording, I can say with confidence that I find this one way more convincing. But I wouldn't recommend the statement you have made unless you know the Tozer recording. I haven't heard his interpretation but I would expect him to be quite good on this one.
Yes, this is a magnificent interpretation, probably the best. You should also listen to the young Alexander Malofeev at Mariinsky theater. This is another memorable interpretation, recently available on TH-cam thanks to Derekborgsdorf.
I agree completely. Great Russian pianists never forgot Medtner. Of the classic pianists who've performed this (Richter, Gilels) I like this the most. Haunting, tragic, whatever word that best describes this, Ginzburg truly captures the soul of this masterpiece.
While I would like to share in the enthusiasm for Medtner I find his harmony consistently routine and unimaginative, almost textbook common practice. Rachmaninoff's harmony was far more chromatically unexpected and unconventional yet still within a totally tonal framework.
