At least paccar finally released the software to even plug into the damn things. It took a couple years before that happened and it was just awesome to send trucks down the JX every week for check engine lights.... lol
And the thing is, they don't even have to be like that. The wiring harnesses were just designed to be quickly assembled the very first time around - a cost-saving measure for the factory that ended up being a pain in the ass for maintainers, which is bass-ackwards because maintainers are going to spend exponentially more time in that engine bay than the assemblers are. The issue is that the assemblers are there at the meeting, deciding which way the design's going to work and the maintainers probably aren't (or aren't listened to if they are there). People are just people, and they listen to the advice of those who work with them every day. It'd be an opportunity for all the licensed mechanics (because they're not going to give the unlicensed ones the time of day) to get together and actually talk to the company about it in an organized way that's hard to ignore. Griping on TH-cam means less than nothing to 'em, much as it makes us feel better.
I wouldn't complain. It runs, and it moved under it's own power. I'd never buy a new one with a computer. Like you, I want something I might be able to fix.

I had an old 88’ Volvo, and I swear to god, whom ever did the wiring on it, what very little there was, was high as a meth-kite... it made zero sense and was an absolute mess, but it ran and quite well too... I never touched and never looked at it again. Wires=trouble.
@Jay Cleaning up after a meth head wiring job is always fun. -Every used project I've ever worked on Got an '86 Honda quad right now, that wiring is all over the place but after probably an hour of testing and repairing all the wiring, it all is functional. Cleaning it up so the entire side of that quad isn't wires hanging has been the harder part. I'd never want to work on something with an advanced computer where the wiring has been molested like that.

Look up a TH-camr called Millennial Farmer(I think), he has several pieces of farming equipment that is all computer controlled, the vehicle, the attachments, vehicle speed with attachments production rates, it’s mind boggling!!
We use to have tw-30 she was a beast, I think she sending smoke signals to let people ahead now to get out way her big beautiful rear coming through. Lol
On the farm I grew up on we had a Ford 9000. Out of all the other tractors it was the one we used year round. Used it in the winter to split fire wood. We also had a 9n that we used around the yard. Mending fences. Both Ford's we used the most and had the least trouble. Now the Oliver's we had well they needed fixing every year. They were all open cab. No a/c just hot steel all around you. Spend a day in August with it 90 degrees out in the sun. I use to envy those big farms with the in closed cabs with a/c and a radio.
Love the older tractors , grew up on them and drove the newer ones also more recently but I love the old stuff 😎 another great video , keep em coming !
Westen the reason the gears are poping out is that there is a spring holding a steel ball like large bearing ball holding the gear selector in place. The spring gets fatigued and needs to be replace. It is 35 years ago I did this on my fathers Ford 9700. If memory serves me correctly, it is easily accessible from the outside on the right hand side of the transmission housing.
I would love to see some of your projects fixed all the way up and maybe even a nice paint job. I know its a lot of time and money, but I think that would be so cool. Keep up the good work!

I've been a diesel mechanic for 10+ yrs now in various fields, worked for local Kubota dealer last(3yrs) before starting my endeavor of building my own "mobile mechanic" business going out in the field and working on tractors and equipment. Your closing comment on electrical wiring and computers being a bigger issue are completely right, yes some times it is customer error but is mostly related to rodents and they can be a huge issue! Hi Wes, Drain the fuel filter (hell replace them) and see what comes out. its been sitting for a long time and may have absorbed water from condensation in the tank. Its not good to put water through the injectors especially the new ones. The water turns to steam in the injector and erodes the pin and nozzle. Check the brakes out too. Its the sort of thing you forget about until you need them and then its tooooo late. splat. A good pressure washing wouldn't hurt it either. Its a good tractor for the money. Love your videos and your sense of humour.
As a diesel mechanic for John Deere i completely agree with you on the complex systems on the newer machines. It makes the little things harder and cost much more for the customer, good luck on this old relic, she's a mean one
Every time i have work done on my 4440 or 4640, the JD mechanics always tell me. "Never get rid of these old tractors, we can't keep the new ones running"

Motor was not in trucks. That’s the other 6.6l Brazil built. Dump the fuel and try new fuel, otherwise rebuild the injectors. Just crack the lines loose individually to find the bad one.
I agree, just slacken the joints, and 16 year old diesel is not diesel any more. Also take off those extra wheels or you will be knocking walls and gate posts down.
Greets from the UK. I would definitely change all six injectors because they keep the engine running like clockwork. The last thing you want is another injector to become weak and you have to take the tractor to the shop to replace it. Once you've done all the repair work needed, you will have one of the nicest tractors that I have ever seen! Good luck with everything.
My uncle used to have 2 TW30s and 4wd TW35. I absolutely loved them. He also had 2 8000s and a 9000 open cab dually with blue mule painted on the side of the hood. I miss being on that farm every single day.. it was in Maine just outside Dover-Foxcroft about 20 years ago.
I used to use a TW35 on a cotton farm in far west New South Wales in Australia, I loved driving it only being 2wd it was great for small jobs.Keep up your videos, I love to watch them and keep up with your projects.

Yea, you can do a lot of slowing down with the throttle with these tractors, but to take it down the road, you need brakes. I have 3 older 40 series John Deeres and a ‘95 model 8400 with mechanical front. It’s absolutely amazing what the modern tractor will do in terms of applying pulling power to the ground and using wider implements and covering more ground, but years ago, in the next county my mechanic told me of one of these newer tractors being used to pull a peanut combine. The peanut debri got up in the tractor and the rodents smelled it and when they got up in it, of course they have to chew any wires they come across. Even after you clean out anything that smells of peanuts, the rodents can smell where another one went and follow the trail and find the new wiring. A real nightmare!
Yea I really like the ford/new holland tractors, we have an old one at the farm I work at, I can’t remember the model I just know it seems like a lighter duty model but it’s a diesel and has the 3 speed with 4 ranges in it and it’ll pull what we need it to.

You were talking about the gears and powershit . Small shifter is the range , high, low and reverse . The foot rocker between the clutch and brake pedals is for the Dual power and that's a hi/lo powershit in each gear.
A family friend had a fairly new tractor stuck by lightning. It didn't burn, or have any visible exterior damage. After a few months in the shop, insurance totalled it out because it was costing too much in new wiring harnesses and computers to fix it all.
There are two simpler methods for identifying a bad injector. #1, just go along the row, and crack each injector line nut open a half turn. If it changes the sound of the engine, that injector is working. Retighten the nut, and move on to the next injector. This is often easier to do at the injector instead of at the pump. It just depends on what all is in the way. #2, use an non-contact thermometer, and check for a cold cylinder on the exhaust manifold. I've never done this, but it's supposed to work well. The amount of smoke that I saw on the video didn't look horrible. Replacing injectors is fine, but I would have tried running a bunch of seafoam through the injectors, then working the snot out of it. Throw it on a manure pump or a chisel plow, and make it snort. I wouldn't be surprised if it cleaned up on its own. That tractor will just play with a 15 foot bush-hog. We've got a tw-25 2wd(20 less hp, a few years newer, but the same frame size) on a 15 foot bushhog 2615L. It's a good match-up. You will definitely want to lose the duals if bush-hogging. No sense in smashing more grass down than you have to. Set the inner wheels wider to compensate, otherwise it's going to be a bit unstable on hills.
Clean the ethanol gunk out of the carb and I bet you it'll start a lot easier. Used to have to clean the carb on my Honda push mower probably twice a year, always got gunked up. Common issue with the god awful carbs they used on the GCV160 engines, sold that mower. Good luck if you take it on, carbs are pretty fool proof on small engines.
Well got to agree with that guy. These old tractors are better built than new ones. Power wash the thing make it look better. The wiring simple to fix. It's just a cool looking tractor.
My first Tractor was a John Deere B model. Then a 766 diesel IH, Then a 1066, then a 1466. Then I got my uncles JD 4020...was in heaven. Miss my farming days
I've subscribed just to see what you do with this tractor. $700 plus injectors, you can't lose. These old tractors will be running long after the modern tractors have been sent to the scrap yard with "electrical problems". We've got MF tractors from the 1950's and 1960's, they're easy to maintain, and more importantly they're easy to troubleshoot. Greetings from Australia.
Hey bud, as a jcb tech I can say that you could get a machine going from this state it’ll just take patience and a laptop. The worst I’ve had was a js220 was submerged for about 6 months every Ecu was fried. The loom wasn’t bad, it was wet in a lot of the plugs but we got it going. All you need is powers to each ecu grounds for each ecu and canbus between them from there on out it’s just another machine really

Probably just self taught. Living on the farm, you learn to work on your own stuff. Dont have the time to wait on a mechanic. That's how I learned. Mechanic work, body work, welding and lots of other things.

Your viewer's are right about the complexity of newer tractors out there, that old turbo diesel does have circuit boards in her for the transmission under the right side power control levers. Pretty sure if its been setting long the relays on that board will need some attention, along with the main harness which feeds all the rest of its business. Rodent's as your aware, dine on the wiring jackets of electrical systems, and may well have quite a few shorts to short out. After you chase down those gremlins, pull all your grounds loose and polish those babies till they gleam, along with where they perch as poor negative chassis grounds wreak havoc on these old Ford's. Replace any bad connectors while your at it, especially in areas where heats a problem. You've gotten yourself fine piece of equipment for a song, please don't let her rot as so many others do. Your children will be using it one fine day, if she gets the care it was meant to have. Stay safe and be well my friend.
I’m gonna disagree on that part about current tractors will be hard to work on in the future. As long it has mechanical fuel injection you just need to jerry rig some starting/ cut off wires and you’ll be golden
With the minor problem that the tw-30 is bigger than every weight class available. It'd be difficult to get it within 12,000 pounds, which is usually the largest class at the pulls.

Blasting old equipment with a pressure washer is a great way to ruin the electronics, hydraulics, pneumatics, hydrostatics, compression and lights.

For an injector put some trans fluid in the fuel tank... I would put a gallon in for a half tank of fuel in that. Should clean her up

Yea, you can do a lot of slowing down with the throttle with these tractors, but to take it down the road, you need brakes. I have 3 older 40 series John Deeres and a ‘95 model 8400 with mechanical front. It’s absolutely amazing what the modern tractor will do in terms of applying pulling power to the ground and using wider implements and covering more ground, but years ago, in the next county my mechanic told me of one of these newer tractors being used to pull a peanut combine. The peanut debri got up in the tractor and the rodents smelled it and when they got up in it, of course they have to chew any wires they come across. Even after you clean out anything that smells of peanuts, the rodents can smell where another one went and follow the trail and find the new wiring. A real nightmare!

Yea I really like the ford/new holland tractors, we have an old one at the farm I work at, I can’t remember the model I just know it seems like a lighter duty model but it’s a diesel and has the 3 speed with 4 ranges in it and it’ll pull what we need it to.

You were talking about the gears and powershit . Small shifter is the range , high, low and reverse . The foot rocker between the clutch and brake pedals is for the Dual power and that's a hi/lo powershit in each gear.
Change the oil in the injection pump and it will stop smoking. I had a ford 4 cylinder with the sims injection pump

A family friend had a fairly new tractor stuck by lightning. It didn't burn, or have any visible exterior damage. After a few months in the shop, insurance totalled it out because it was costing too much in new wiring harnesses and computers to fix it all.
There are two simpler methods for identifying a bad injector.
#1, just go along the row, and crack each injector line nut open a half turn. If it changes the sound of the engine, that injector is working. Retighten the nut, and move on to the next injector. This is often easier to do at the injector instead of at the pump. It just depends on what all is in the way.
#2, use an non-contact thermometer, and check for a cold cylinder on the exhaust manifold. I've never done this, but it's supposed to work well.
The amount of smoke that I saw on the video didn't look horrible. Replacing injectors is fine, but I would have tried running a bunch of seafoam through the injectors, then working the snot out of it. Throw it on a manure pump or a chisel plow, and make it snort. I wouldn't be surprised if it cleaned up on its own.
That tractor will just play with a 15 foot bush-hog. We've got a tw-25 2wd(20 less hp, a few years newer, but the same frame size) on a 15 foot bushhog 2615L. It's a good match-up. You will definitely want to lose the duals if bush-hogging. No sense in smashing more grass down than you have to. Set the inner wheels wider to compensate, otherwise it's going to be a bit unstable on hills.

Clean the ethanol gunk out of the carb and I bet you it'll start a lot easier. Used to have to clean the carb on my Honda push mower probably twice a year, always got gunked up. Common issue with the god awful carbs they used on the GCV160 engines, sold that mower. Good luck if you take it on, carbs are pretty fool proof on small engines.

Well got to agree with that guy. These old tractors are better built than new ones. Power wash the thing make it look better. The wiring simple to fix. It's just a cool looking tractor.
My first Tractor was a John Deere B model. Then a 766 diesel IH, Then a 1066, then a 1466. Then I got my uncles JD 4020...was in heaven. Miss my farming days

I've subscribed just to see what you do with this tractor. $700 plus injectors, you can't lose. These old tractors will be running long after the modern tractors have been sent to the scrap yard with "electrical problems". We've got MF tractors from the 1950's and 1960's, they're easy to maintain, and more importantly they're easy to troubleshoot. Greetings from Australia.
Hey bud, as a jcb tech I can say that you could get a machine going from this state it’ll just take patience and a laptop. The worst I’ve had was a js220 was submerged for about 6 months every Ecu was fried. The loom wasn’t bad, it was wet in a lot of the plugs but we got it going. All you need is powers to each ecu grounds for each ecu and canbus between them from there on out it’s just another machine really

Probably just self taught. Living on the farm, you learn to work on your own stuff. Dont have the time to wait on a mechanic. That's how I learned. Mechanic work, body work, welding and lots of other things.

Maybe I should hang on to all those old Carburetors in my garage. World War 3 will definitely include EMP issues and a working carburetor could be worth a small fortune. Some of those old Breaker Point distributors could be valuable too

Your viewer's are right about the complexity of newer tractors out there, that old turbo diesel does have circuit boards in her for the transmission under the right side power control levers. Pretty sure if its been setting long the relays on that board will need some attention, along with the main harness which feeds all the rest of its business. Rodent's as your aware, dine on the wiring jackets of electrical systems, and may well have quite a few shorts to short out. After you chase down those gremlins, pull all your grounds loose and polish those babies till they gleam, along with where they perch as poor negative chassis grounds wreak havoc on these old Ford's. Replace any bad connectors while your at it, especially in areas where heats a problem. You've gotten yourself fine piece of equipment for a song, please don't let her rot as so many others do. Your children will be using it one fine day, if she gets the care it was meant to have. Stay safe and be well my friend.

Get some Techron for Diesel engines put it in the fuel. It is a injector cleaner.
I’m gonna disagree on that part about current tractors will be hard to work on in the future. As long it has mechanical fuel injection you just need to jerry rig some starting/ cut off wires and you’ll be golden

With the minor problem that the tw-30 is bigger than every weight class available. It'd be difficult to get it within 12,000 pounds, which is usually the largest class at the pulls.
