If you drive a car, you should. It could literally save your entire financial future from a lying driver in an accident. If you don't drive, then ya I can see where you're coming from :)
The power cycling when its been left for a few days may be overcurrent protection in the adaptor. My thought being that the completely drained super-capacitor will be trying to charge up as fast as possible, and that combined with the bootup load of the camera itself may well be too much for the supplied adaptor. Try it with a different one and see if that fixes it?
Good input. That makes sense. Like trying to power up an LG with a generic power supply and a dead battery. Power on then off to buffer energy. Too much at once but use quality/branded supplies and no power up, charge, or use problems ever. If this is the case software won't do much to solve this exept an auto retry or warning system. Still not practical.
I'm wondering, why more dashcam manufacturers doesn't include or even build the polarising filter right in to the lens of the camera - I mean, those filters, especially in tiny sizes like this lens, costs literally 50 cents a piece ( most likely a fraction of that, if purchased in bulk). Why don't they do this and make a nice selling feature?...
I love my YI dashcam, no issues since January. It's a $50 rectangle one with wifi. Picture is insanely clear, been through -20 to +20 C already this year. The emerg folder on my cam is full of cool cars, I see a cool car I push the cool car button lmfao!
In my car the occasional power-on power-off thing with my A118 was caused by the way the ignition cut power to the 12V. The camera detected power and started turning on, then detected power was lost during startup and shut back off. Maybe the capacitor wasn't charged enough or something... This was solved by waiting an extra few seconds with the key in and turned before actually starting the engine.
Makes sense. I think an adapter with a high load ability could fix this by "slamming" the capacitor with enough juice to keep it alive during the starter engagement (if the cord is up to it). Another idea: When you get in unplug the camera until after you start the car if it's been a while.
I really love the British roads. Beautiful area btw. We had a short family vacation in South England last year and I loved it. Driving on the "wrong" side of the road, esp. in roundabouts made me sweat a little bit but it was so much fun. A modern car where you could switch the settings from KMH to MPH helped a lot, too.
Crikey, a dash cam video. A blast from the past to be sure. I remember a time not so long ago that you would apologise for doing retro stuff instead of these. How times have changed.
Just a word of advice, I drive with a dashcam, and an audio recording app on my phone. I do this so I can read out number plates, record interactions with officers or other motorists, just things like that. It also serves as a sort of backup just incase the footage fails you have audio. If nothing happens during your drive, just delete the audio file so it doesn't take up phone space.
Nice review. You are the first to show that you can separate the camera body from the mount on this Yi model. I could live with the lower quality as the sole function of a dashcam for me is acting as an accident witness. I always put a strip of tint on the top of my windshields so only the lens portion of the body is visible. This budget camera works for me because living in the southwest part of the US, it gets very hot and kills dashcams. My first one was a pricey ($300 USD) Finevu CR-500HD and both of them only lasted a couple of years in each car. Replacing this Yi is nice and inexpensive.
I was thinking the exact opposite. I've seen these in real life, they are down right ugly. And knowing Smart (Mercedes) reliabilty, I wouldn't ever think of owning one.
Used to have a Brabus Xclusive roadster coupe, regret selling it to this day. Drove it from Norway to Italy and back in under a week, and every km was a joy. 101hp is surpisingly fun in a 700kg car.
I am using Yi Smart dahscam ,hidden by the mirror. From driver position I can´t see the display. But it isn´t problem for me, I have clear view from car (without camera and cables). And when I want to check view of camera, I use viewfinder from application :)
That dash reflection is good to know about- my non-convertible car just has a huge flat dash and massive glare from some angles. Any dashcam just needs to have the lens very close to the glass, so avoiding the glare comes down to the design of the box and where the lens comes out, on most cars. On yours, obviously blocking all that dashboard reflection would block half the road :(
I like those cars. One of my favorite top gear episodes is when they review that car and they introduce james may as another presenter. Thought it was a interesting concept, far to small for my self to fit in, but I like the looks of it.
Another great video - Glad to see you doing the tour around the Wigan area and very strange seeing my front door on video - I will wave next time !! Plus what is the audio computer code at the end of the titles?
Hi. Anyone any idea about the impact (if any) of the very recent implementation of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) on dashcam footage? BobUK. [Edit for clarity, not my terrible spelling this time!].
The problem you are facing with the camera turning on and off in a Smart car is all down to the way the Smart power cycles when the engine is cool or cold. I have the same problem on my 14 year old Smart 4-2. It would appear that when the engine is cold the car goes into an engine pre-heat mode and drops voltage below 10.2 volts on the cigarette lighter socket. As the camera detects a voltage it turns on, but immediately turns off as the voltage is below 10.2 volts. If the engine is warm enough then it will not need to drop the voltage and thus the camera starts no problem. The only way round this is to hive off a 12volt power line from the SAM unit in the passenger footwell. It has a couple of sockets free that can provide the power needed at start up without dropping the voltage.
Aa always another great video! Would love to see another review of something like the mobius where you can mount the brains separate to the actual camera lens. Seems like a rare product
I used my Yi in a tractor trailer and found that it was quite good mostly. If your truck is jiggly then you will have runs of hard accel that should put you in low earth orbit in about 10 minutes. But if your vehicle is not so shaky you'll be fine. These cameras are actually pretty damned good. I would stay with the next higher unit in the range. This economy offering is a little too little.
skilfulCOM you can do a lots of things to fix the angle, the thing is you have to bother with it, you can't just unpack the thing, stick it and drive away...
I had on idea you still had the Roadster, just bought one myself that is almost identical. Fantastic fun little car and it's always nice to see a camera actually tested in the car I would put it in.
I like the design and especially the 12v adapter, as most cameras have big adapter, which is blocking the gear shift (manual gearbox) if you attach it to the lighter in the dashboard. But the video quality is not very good, you can buy a118c from China for cheapes price with better video quality. Anyway, thanks for the review!
Hi Techmoan. Love your vids, but I have a follow up video request. A while back you reviewed th Yi M1. Since this is a software driven powerhouse of hardware, and the software finally has improved, could you do an update review? It changed quite a bit with the 3.1 update and I was wondering if now is the time to pick one up cheap.
Strange. I have a Toguard camera that looks very much like this Yi you review. Interesting with the night footage. I have a Mio camera, and for some reason when it gets dark I can’t even export it on iMovie or Final Cut. It’s like some bad file of some description?

Got myself one of these for my beginners driver time, so that im not made responsible for something im not. Now I just need a way to rip it off fast in case I really am responsible.
Just bought one two days ago, not installed yet but I only test it using cellphone charger. The problem is the date-time keeps resetting to 1-1-2018 00:00. The unit also shuts off at the time I unplug the charger. I once suspected it was the faulty battery, but you said it uses supercapacitor. Is it the (super) capacitor being faulty?
Thank you for the review; Nice convertible, reminds me a bit of of an Opel GT, I don’t know why.... just does. If not for your review I probably wouldn’t have ever found this dashcam; Thank you.
I'd love to see aftermarket car stereo manufacturers make a head unit that would allow you to add a front and rear camera that would be powered by the head unit with the memory card installed in the head unit. That way you avoid the power being supplied by the cigarette lighter. Kinda like a back up camera with the ability to record/store video on the head unit. Seems like a easy thing for them to do. Maybe this already exists but I'm not aware of it.
Sometimes capture devices don't end a file after a complete frame and switch to the new file in the middle of a frame. Most video tools will detect a broken frame and the re-sync will cause the audio drop. By binary joining the files on a file system that can handle bigger files sizes the broken frame should disappear.
Smart didn't make it here to the USA until 2008, but before that, some of the cars were unofficially imported by a company that modified them to meet federal standards. I wonder if they ever considered bringing the Roadster over? I'd buy one. A company I used to work for had a Fourtwo that we used for errands, and that thing was kind of fun to drive. I imagine that an MR version of it would be even more fun, and that's what the Roadster is.
TBustah Actually SMART was mulling the issue over but decided that the US consumers wouldn't buy these as they are "too small". I say small cars sell here, but they need to be very compelling to do so. This is just larger than a Kei class vehicle...sadly in the USA companies won't sell this size because they are afraid of liability issues.
Cool car. Yep, seems a little high in price for the issues that you mentioned. And, remember everyone, just as with a water filter in one's home: any type of water filter is better than no water filter ... because ... without a water filter, YOU are the filter. Which goes to say: any dash cam is better than none. Having said that, folks, get a dash cam of some kind. I have a dash cam for looking/recording forward ... and ... a dash cam that is attached to my rear seats head rest, which looks/records to the rear. (BTW--Techmoan, my rear of the car facing cam is one you reviews a couple of years ago.) Cheers
Could use an advice, i would like to take a car for a roadtrip on the continent from time to time, i've heard that it's possible to use a dash cam as an aid in overtaking for rhd cars in lhd traffic. What dashcams are good for that, how to set it up so it would be safe and is it even a safe solution? cheers.
I dunno, there's a 5$ difference between this one and the other one in your description. I think I'm going to buy the 50$ one since it can do 60fps video.
I absolutely adore your videos. They are so cathartic in just letting me chill and nerd out on new and old gizmos. They’ve inspired me to start tinkering with and fixing things I’ve acquired here and there. “Everything old is new again.”
I have absolutely no interest in dash cameras whatsoever.
And I’ve still watched every one of your videos 😊
Same. They just make me think of that red dwarf episode back to reality

i dont know how you can make a 20 minute video... on a cheap dash cam...
i love it, please keep doing it
Derpy Hooves that dash cam only can record 1 or 3 minutes videos at a time.
Derpy Hooves 18 minute video*
Derpy, click into the channel... All the reviews are a decent length and packed with info ;-)
Bought a Yi dashcam in 2016 and I highly recommend them. Good, cheap products
As always a superb dash cam review. You are definitely the number 1 guy for reviewing these. Thanks.
"We are the Knights that say: Yi"
It probably won't be an issue in the UK but people in hotter climates should know that 3M pad has a tendency to split apart when the car gets hot.
That is probably also the reason the supplied pad is light gray. A black pad would melt in a hot climate.
Supercapacitors are not immune to heat
No one said anything about supercapacitors
I love the Smart Roadster. Super adorable.
Crikey, a dash cam video. A blast from the past to be sure. I remember a time not so long ago that you would apologise for doing retro stuff instead of these. How times have changed.
One of the best features of a modern dashcam is that it creates wifi that the app can connect to.
I just got this one last week based on your previous reviews, it’s great for the price, my first one
I couldn't read the reg number of that horse.
How well does this thing cope in the vacuum of space? Asking this on behalf of my friend Elon.
I have a first class ticket on the number 9
You were a saint in the land of the living?
Based on what my good friend J.J Abrams has showed me, there are a lot of lens flares in space, which this camera doesn't quite seem to like.
Manny Calavera. If that supercapacitor can survive in outer space, the answer is yes
Mine works ok up here but the time is wrong for andromida

I cant be the only person who pretends you say YEEEET! every time you review a YI camera can I?
Dude, your car looks really neat for a twelve year old car. And it looks to be in great shape!
Ha ha - love the explanation about your car near the beginning. I guess you know you'd get a lot of comments about it. Very cool!
Just when I googled Yi and I saw this video saying 1 hour ago. And I really watch this channel!
....that's the coolest goddamned car I've ever seen.
how many cars have you seen? 5?
Goofy af.
I was thinking the exact opposite. I've seen these in real life, they are down right ugly. And knowing Smart (Mercedes) reliabilty, I wouldn't ever think of owning one.
don't cuss
You should try the Brabus Herbie, you'd be converted.
Ahhh. Some classic Techmo' aright here. This is what I subscribed 5 years ago for, but I've stuck around for so much more.
I always stay to the end because of that mesmerizing credits
Used to have a Brabus Xclusive roadster coupe, regret selling it to this day. Drove it from Norway to Italy and back in under a week, and every km was a joy. 101hp is surpisingly fun in a 700kg car.
Excellent review! Keep bringing more of those dashcam reviews.
5:10 am in the us, gotta make sure you watch techmoan
Tucker Dennis And here I was thinking I was the only sap in the US watching the video. ;)
George Ojeda at 5am?
Yes - its says in your remark "5:10 am in the US, gotta make sure you watch techmoan"
Luckily in my time zone in the U.S. the uploads are in the afternoon

uncannily I was considering buying this on Saturday, dodged that bullet thanks
That's a sweet car! Must be a blast to drive.
Thanks to your video reviews on dash cameras i bought 2 VIOFO 119 and they work great.
Yi must be regretting its decision.
GREAT REVIEWS...How do you auto trim the overlap when you merge a large number of dash-cam videos.
Anyone see the Turbo Gauge?😎
I just realized this channel is NOT called Techno Man!
Another great video - Glad to see you doing the tour around the Wigan area and very strange seeing my front door on video - I will wave next time !! Plus what is the audio computer code at the end of the titles?

Hi Mat, Will you be buying a HiveMapper Dashcam Miner?
I used my Yi in a tractor trailer and found that it was quite good mostly. If your truck is jiggly then you will have runs of hard accel that should put you in low earth orbit in about 10 minutes. But if your vehicle is not so shaky you'll be fine. These cameras are actually pretty damned good. I would stay with the next higher unit in the range. This economy offering is a little too little.
To fix the angle, you could use two pieces of double sided black tape with narrow wedge in between.
skilfulCOM you can do a lots of things to fix the angle, the thing is you have to bother with it, you can't just unpack the thing, stick it and drive away...
Can you do a video on your car? I would be very interested in that since I have never seen one before. Thanks!
I had on idea you still had the Roadster, just bought one myself that is almost identical. Fantastic fun little car and it's always nice to see a camera actually tested in the car I would put it in.
An other good video. I am not very interested in dash cams but love your channel and am happy to help you grow. Keep up the great work.
Wow love your little car! Do you get Daihatsu Copens in the UK? My dream car but here's so little of them in Australia.
I have found that the driving report does help with less false emergcy recordings when you go over a pothole , it may be my cam. though
Would you ever consider an MR2?
California sunsets 🤗 loving that look even though it's the UK
I like the design and especially the 12v adapter, as most cameras have big adapter, which is blocking the gear shift (manual gearbox) if you attach it to the lighter in the dashboard. I have a Ddpai m6 plus gps, I purchased it around a year ago after watching your review. Good dash cam but is there a better one you can recommend ?
are they preparing this design for future 2channel models???
Your car looks really cool I wish I had one
The power on off issue may be because when you turn your car on the power cuts out for a second.
are you going to review the new viofo camera? A129 Duo
Hi any chance you would be reviewing back up cameras or 360 ones for cars?
Hi Techmoan. Love your vids, but I have a follow up video request. A while back you reviewed th Yi M1. Since this is a software driven powerhouse of hardware, and the software finally has improved, could you do an update review?
It changed quite a bit with the 3.1 update and I was wondering if now is the time to pick one up cheap.
Strange. I have a Toguard camera that looks very much like this Yi you review. Wonder if these are all the same thing, under different name and software or really different cameras with incidental similarities! Lack of GPS is not a deal breaker for me but "Parking Mode" is. And I always look for a dedicate Parking mode that activates automatically when camera finds car is not moving anymore (With no need of intervention form drive to change the mode) and not a fake Motion Detection mode that some crocket manufacture take advantage off and call it PM!
So, what would you buy for the best all around but budget dashcam?
That’s a badass looking car! Never seen or heard of it before. Guess that’s why they aren’t made anymore. 🤣
Interesting with the night footage. I have a Mio camera, and for some reason when it gets dark I can’t even export it on iMovie or Final Cut. It’s like some bad file of some description?
Damn those cars look cool. They look like they are the size of something tiny like an mx-5 Miata (did they release a Miata in the UK?)
Nice video like always! I would like to see a review of one of those dvr car mirror dash cams. There are some with even a sim card slot. Thank you!
13:08 Collision Sensibility is a new one! At least you've set it to 'Low'.
Will that grey adhesive also be fixed with new firmware update?
Could you recommend a good dual dash camera front and rear to buy please?
Absolutely lovely car and really fun to drive (if you can cope with the gearbox).
I use a Yi something or other. "2.7" Screen Full HD 1080P60 165 Wide Angle" the amazon listing says. It works well enough. Don't leave it in my car, though. I put some industrial velcro on it and stick it to the dash.
Nice review. I feel you've done this before. I hope Yi use this information and replace those grey pads!
have any chance to review Mini 0906 dual camera?
Great review. Never saw that horse!😱
Can you review budget dashcams with reverse camera
Got myself one of these for my beginners driver time, so that im not made responsible for something im not. Now I just need a way to rip it off fast in case I really am responsible.
Just bought one two days ago, not installed yet but I only test it using cellphone charger. The problem is the date-time keeps resetting to 1-1-2018 00:00. The unit also shuts off at the time I unplug the charger. I once suspected it was the faulty battery, but you said it uses supercapacitor. Is it the (super) capacitor being faulty?
Thank you for the review; Nice convertible, reminds me a bit of of an Opel GT, I don’t know why.... just does. If not for your review I probably wouldn’t have ever found this dashcam;
Thank you.
Please I need some help. Do you still recommend the Aukey Dual Dash Cam? You still using it? Been a couple of months now any problems? Ta.

Techmoan, a few other reviews said the Yi Mini uses battery and not capacitor. Apparently, batteries are cheaper. Could you kindly verify?
Are you doing some more kitchen appliances reviews? :). Love those.
You should review the car! It's a beauty I wished was available in North America.
Hi, could you make a video on the 70mai Dashcam 😃
It's another Dashcam somehow related to Xiaomi 😍
I’m still happy with my Vicovation Opia2. 😁

I really like your car!!
I dunno, there's a 5$ difference between this one and the other one in your description. I think I'm going to buy the 50$ one since it can do 60fps video.
Your Roadster is a cutie! (Have seen a handful down here in NZ)
Antoine P it’s not a Tesla....unfortunately
Conor Grace unfortunately????????????????????
