Dixie was an awesome actress with the delivery of her lines. This scene and the scene where she puts the current beauty pageant winner who was criticizing her sister, in her place, goes down as my top two favorites!

I cannot believe this is true, but I just read that the show/actors were nominated 14 times, but the only Emmy Designing Women ever won was for hair styling.
"Killing All the Right People" will always be one of my all time favorite episodes. Linda Bloodworth-Thomason wrote this after her mother died from contracting AIDS through a blood transfusion. She said, it brought her enlightened interest of how people with AIDS were treated with prejudice especially towards the gay community. She definitely used her platform to show ignorance at its finest and that is beyond commendable! And in my opinion, she should have won the Emmy for writing this. 👏❤💜💙💛💚👏
Ryan White did a lot to break the "gay cancer" stigma. He too contracted it during a blood transfusion, something that thankfully doesn't happen anymore, at least not in developed nations.
She was visiting her mother in the hospital--someone had written on the wall in the women's room "AIDS is Killing All the Right People." I had the chance to meet Linda B-T and shared with her the effect this episode had I me (and still does).
I worked for a major Texas conservative corporation during this time. I ran the division in Boston. One of the staff, a male, contracted AIDS. I called Dallas and asked what we could do. I was pleasantly shocked when they said, tell him he will get full disability and his hospitalization paid for the duration. He did have to leave the work place as folks were scared and we did not know much about contagion of it back then. He was surprised and gracious and passed a few months later. I was proud of my company.
My uncle died from AIDS in 1985, and it was That Bad. As a pwa ( Person With Aids ) and even before knowing that I carried the virus I found this episode rather enthralling because when Julia got " all fired up " the true truth came out and the facts began to fly freely and thereby let the hoity toidy kvetch know where her place was . Then of course telling that snooty heifer about going to the free clinic was in my mind just the icing with red roses on the cake :) .
@@julieporter7805I love it too! It’s hilarious that Bernice basically admitting that she might be a bit out of her mind at times but at least she still has what counts the most for a person: Compassion and acceptance of those who need it the most.

Nobody ever says much about it but I also applaud Camilla Carr, the actress who played Imogene Salinger, for being brave enough to play such an unsympathetic part in this episode.
Patrick Heath Yeah that could not have been easy to say those vile things and she probably got a lot of crap in the streets and while I said I would knock her out I know Its the character not the actress some people however cannot so I hope she did not get abuse in her real life for it Someone had to do it she has guts
@@aprilgosa5779 I agree. That could not have been an easy role to play, but it was necessary to get the point apart about why this disease was so bad. It wasn't just the disease itself, it was the stigma caused by the ignorance about the disease. I really admired Tony Goldwyn's character in this scene. He didn't respond to Imogene with anger, even though he would have been justified in doing so.
That's so cold and vicious. Telling someone with a horrible disease that they deserve to die. Wtf?! I'm so glad Julia ripped that hateful witch apart. Regardless of your religious or personal beliefs, what Imogene said was evil and heartless. Way out of line. Get her, Julia!
I never saw the show but when I first watched this clip I was shocked and disgusted what she said about God sending HIV/AIDS as punishment to homosexuals. How dare that bitch said that. Nobody asks to get HIV/AIDS wether they're gay or straight, anybody can get it. I'm no Catholic but I do not need to be cause I know and believe that the Holy Mother loves her children the way they are, people created bigotry by abusing her book cause they didn't like what she wrote, all her children are pure no matter who they are. For those who are abusing the Bible with evil and committing bigotry against homosexuals, unmarried mothers and any others on your hatred list in front of God I'm going to put this in her book: "Those who judge shall be punished by Hell"
I'm a christian and Heterosexual and i think this is bad what that lady is saying about the LGBT community. Us straight people can get AIDS too just like the LGBT people. This episode was amazing and this show is my grandma's favorite show.
this scene still makes me cry, years after I first heard it because for years I told myself it was a punishment. and it took a lot of work to realize that mentality was toxic.
As hateful as the red-headed villain woman is, it is still a very shocking line of dialogue from her (at least for what this show is). More shocking still is how many people today still hold the same attitudes.
I always felt Julia Sugarbaker and Clair Huxtuble were the black and white versions of each other. Would read you down, and leave you standing there with your mouth open.
Yeah .. no one but Julia S could so tactfully and gracefully kick someone out of her home.... again, Dixie... you were the best... rest in peace, dear lady...
One thought to ponder: Julia Sugarbaker could tell someone off like no one else. But when the mood strikes her, I think Dorothy Zbornak could give her a run for her money. I can think of a couple of scenes where she told someone off something fierce. But that is only my opinion
20 / 25 years later they don't make television shows comedies that tackle social issues...shows like Designing Women and others will never come around in this day in age....great television is totally missed
Just discovered this gem 💎 the day after 2922 midterm elections! 😉. Designing Women was a groundbreaker! Suzanne was my favorite and here she is looking so much like Elizabeth Taylor, who was such a champion in fight against AIDS, standing up to a self righteous 😡 😤 bigot! 🏆. And JULIA 🏆 ♥ as always 🌹 ROSE to the challenge! Loved another episode when Julia called a prepresidential Donald Trump!!!💋. LORD we need this show NOW! 🏆👍 💎
Dennis Garcia I totally understand where your coming from I am. 62 year old woman and I have never seen the country in such a divided condition. This isn't about party lines anymore.this is just plain ugly hate.
MrReasonablethinker, I am terribly sorry but I am going to have to ask you to move your car. The only thing that bothers us about the current President is that he was elected because of and with the help of Putin. You know that horrible man in Russia? And just for the record the MANY of you who loathed the previous administration mostly certainly did not accept it and absolutely positively did not make the best of it. You all acted the fool. So perhaps you should take your own advice and seek out a new country. Might we suggest Russia.
Mitch Gray maybe you’re right and maybe you’re wrong but it’s not about that anymore. All politics are about is trying to get everyone on their side. Tell me, how many people are in this country alone? U think everyone will all go one way 100%? Everyone is republican or everyone is democrat? NO! That will NEVER happen! And instead of trying to work together all you wanna do is waste time by pointing out the other sides flaws and negatives. It’s disgusting. I think you’d save a lot of time and energy if you just all got on a field and stand at opposite ends of the field, face each other, run at each other with pitchforks and just fight to the death. And I don’t mean till one side remains I mean one PERSON remains! Either that or get a hobby! ALL POLITICS ARE SHADY AND ALL HAVE SKELETONS IN THE CLOSET!
Hey, that's Tony Goldwyn!! I used to watch this show faithfully and never realized that was him until just now. Granted, he wasn't nearly as famous then.
I agree. I admired how Kendall responded to her in a calm, rational manner. "Actually nobody knows how it got started. Gays were just the first group of people it showed up in". I don't know if I would have been that calm if that was me.
Most of my favorite moments in this show were the times when Julia would SNAP and let someone have it! RIP my favorite Designing Woman. Thanks for all the good times.👍
Whenever Julia stood up and said "THAT'S IT!" you knew someone was about to get told off. One of my favorites was when Julia told off that beauty queen who was making fun of Suzanne. "And that....just so you will know....and your children will some day know....was the night....the lights....went out...in GEORGIA!" She got all up in that woman's face.
Dark days. A diagnosis at this time was still largely a death sentence for many people. Also, I don't get the joke at the end when she is yelling out the door about "all A's" and "P.E.". Running gag from earlier in the episode?
+Clint Guidry Earlier in the episode, Ima Jean was boasting to Julia how her son was doing so well at college. Julia decided to down play her own son's wonderful grades at school as something of a birthday present to Ima Jean by telling her he was failing chemistry. Julia explained at one point that telling that lie was a much better present for Ima Jean than buying her a scarf. The episode is posted here on TH-cam so you can see the whole scene.
Not just a great actress, Dixie Carter was one of the finest people I ever knew. And look at a young Tony Goldwyn -- also a fine man and fine actor. I miss this show!
That's what I like about Julia Sugarbaker: She doesn't take any crap from anyone. And when push comes to shove, she keeps her composure while being blunt towards the truly stupid people of the world. What she has said in this clip shows.
I read more about that episode. The line about "killing all the right people" was something Linda bloodworth -Thomason heard while she was caring for her mom, who died of AIDS. She wrote the episode.
The Ima Jean characters did more damage to many folks coming out. The Julia character would be great in the 1980s Middle America, but that didn't happen. Meanwhile the Ima Jean relics are the ones to be leery of.
“Then how come lesbians get it less?” I love this line because it also links to another episode where she actually makes friends with a lesbian called I think Linda, I’m not sure if that episode came before this one but it’s a nice thing I just noticed
When this aired, it took my breath away to see support for us. Absolutely still love this today and always. Btw she was a force and I would NOT wanna be on Julia's bad side! 😂

Bernice cracks me up. When she taps her chest and says "neither are you"
I love that she implied that Imogene was heartless.
@@julieporter7805I love it too! It’s hilarious that Bernice basically admitting that she might be a bit out of her mind at times but at least she still has what counts the most for a person: Compassion and acceptance of those who need it the most.
The courage of the whole production team and the conviction of the actresses to take such a stance during such a tumultuous time…that took guts.
*"...including... P. EEEEEEEE.!!!!"*
LMAO!
That's my favorite part of the whole thing. 🤣
Including P. EEEEEEEEE.!!!!!!!
The most magnificent temper to ever grace the small screen.
The girls want Julia to get fired up and they get a little more than they bargained for.
"And another thing...my son has an "A" in chemistry! In fact, he has an "A" in everything! Including P.EEEEEEEEEE!!!" I love this scene!
R.I.P Dixie Carter, I miss you & Julia! and all the cast of DW!
I love this scene. I am an HIV survivor since 1995. All of my friends from then are dead..
I'm sorry to. Hear that. Blessings to your continued health.
I didnt know about this scene or show. Watchmojo took me here. Im so glad it did. What a powerful scene
Nobody ever says much about it but I also applaud Camilla Carr, the actress who played Imogene Salinger, for being brave enough to play such an unsympathetic part in this episode.
Especially when most actors are loath to take on such a role, as it could typecast them their whole career.
Patrick Heath Yeah that could not have been easy to say those vile things and she probably got a lot of crap in the streets and while I said I would knock her out I know Its the character not the actress some people however cannot so I hope she did not get abuse in her real life for it Someone had to do it she has guts
I am thinking the same thing.
He didn't respond to Imogene with anger, even though
he would have been justified in doing so.
Actors act. That's what they do.
Those Sugarbaker sisters were NO JOKE!
Love them
I'm a christian and Heterosexual and i think this is bad what that lady is saying about the LGBT community. Us straight people can get AIDS too just like the LGBT people. This episode was amazing and this show is my grandma's favorite show.
this scene still makes me cry, years after I first heard it
because for years I told myself it was a punishment. and it took a lot of work to realize that mentality was toxic.
I love how this show said this at a time where not much was known about HIV/AIDS.
“…..including P.EEEEEEEEEEEE.!!!” *slams door then awkward silence*
“Well, she….finally got fired up.”
Lmao 😂
As hateful as the red-headed villain woman is, it is still a very shocking line of dialogue from her (at least for what this show is). More shocking still is how many people today still hold the same attitudes.
1:00 to 1:14 is the best part!
theiran lmao i so agree
theiran ohhhhhhhhhhh😎
I always felt Julia Sugarbaker and Clair Huxtuble were the black and white versions of each other. Would read you down, and leave you standing there with your mouth open.
What gets me is when Julia adds, “And so would the rest of us.”
We would all be at the free clinic....LOVE JULIA!
Yeah .. no one but Julia S could so tactfully and gracefully kick someone out of her home.... again, Dixie... you were the best... rest in peace, dear lady...
Is it bad that I've watched this so many times I pretty much have all the dialogue memorized?
One thought to ponder: Julia Sugarbaker could tell someone off like no one else. But when the mood strikes her, I think Dorothy Zbornak could give her a run for her money. I can think of a couple of scenes where she told someone off something fierce. But that is only my opinion
20 / 25 years later they don't make television shows comedies that tackle social issues...shows like Designing Women and others will never come around in this day in age....great television is totally missed
I'd like to take a moment and shout-out young Tony Goldwyn for playing the brave and beautiful character that was the subject of this scene!
That's before we all had to hate him for killing Patrick Swayze in Ghost, right?
Just discovered this gem 💎 the day after 2922 midterm elections! 😉. Designing Women was a groundbreaker! Suzanne was my favorite and here she is looking so much like Elizabeth Taylor, who was such a champion in fight against AIDS, standing up to a self righteous 😡 😤 bigot! 🏆. And JULIA 🏆 ♥ as always 🌹 ROSE to the challenge! Loved another episode when Julia called a prepresidential Donald Trump!!!💋. LORD we need this show NOW! 🏆👍 💎
One of the shows most powerful and emotional episodes. Cheers to the cast and crew of Designing Women; a show never to be forgotten.
Julia Sugarbaker, the world still needs you.
“Getting A’s in everything! Including P.E.!!!!!!” Lmfao
Today I cried more deeply rewatching this scene hoping that this backwards mentality won't go back as the culture of hate has been inaugurated. :\
Dixie & Hal Holbrook tighter again in heaven surely missed
She shut down that homophobe quicker than you can say homophobe. 😂🤩
I've only started to discover this show, and I'm shocked it didn't win any Emmys for writing or acting!!
COME ON, PEOPLE!!
I never realized. I wonder why?
I was 5 - Julia Sugarbaker was already fighting for my rights ❤
0:18 - Experts now believe that poachers in Africa most likely started it by contracting it from their primate prey.
Hey, that's Tony Goldwyn!! I used to watch this show faithfully and never realized that was him until just now. Granted, he wasn't nearly as famous then.
No, but just as GORGEOUS!
Julia Sugarbaker would make a great Minister preaching from the pulpit
“No but they’re the ones who started it”
Damn this line makes me so pissed.
I agree. I admired how Kendall responded to her in a calm, rational manner. "Actually nobody knows how it got started. Gays were just the first group of people it showed up in". I don't know if I would have been that calm if that was me.
All these years later it still makes me cry
Most of my favorite moments in this show were the times when Julia would SNAP and let someone have it!
RIP my favorite Designing Woman.
Thanks for all the good times.👍
Whenever Julia stood up and said "THAT'S IT!" you knew someone was about to get told off. One of my favorites was when Julia told off that beauty queen who was making fun of Suzanne. "And that....just so you will know....and your children will some day know....was the night....the lights....went out...in GEORGIA!" She got all up in that woman's face.
I always loved the scenes when Julia got fired up. It meant she was going to rip into someone who had it coming to them.
First time I saw this I cried. Good job
I love Dizie!! She is the true Southern lady!!
“Imogene, I’m terribly sorry, I’m gonna have to ask you to move your car.”
“Why?”
“Because you’re leaving.”
Translation: GET THE HELL OUT OF MY HOUSE!
SweptAway529 Cool, thanks!
They need to show the entire series again from the first episode to the final episode...
I'm watching it now on prime. Commercial free.
“My son has an A in chemistry, in fact he’s making all A’s in everything, including P-Eeeeeeeeeee!” *door slam*
*Including P.EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!*
I love that so much
I read more about that episode. The line about "killing all the right people" was something Linda bloodworth -Thomason heard while she was caring for her mom, who died of AIDS. She wrote the episode.
Friend of mine mentioned this scene to me today. And I entered the words and the magic happened
Julia is the most savage woman I’ve ever seen
They call her “ the terminator” for a reason. When she roasted Shannon Gibbs
The Golden Girls and Designing women was ahead of the time how each and everyone of them stood up for what was right
Can we give Bernice the credit she deserves?
You would never see scenes like this anymore.
Because conservatives would cry about it.
Every time I watch this I cry, stigma then, stigma still
When this show hit its stride...it shot to the moon ...one of the best casts ever!!!
It came in the fourth season this was the first or 2nd season
When this aired, it took my breath away to see support for us. Absolutely still love this today and always. Btw she was a force and I would NOT wanna be on Julia's bad side! 😂
My God, Tony Goldwyn was SO beautiful!
Hell hath no fury when Julia sugarbaker is scorned!!!!
1:23 Probably not the smartest thing to say to someone who was in an episode of Tales From The Darkside.
I remember that episode of "Tales from the Darkside". It was unusual to see Alice Ghostley play such an evil character.
@@gemini2012100 And she did a really great job in it too.
If God was giving out sexually transmitted diseases to people as a punishment for sinning..Then You would be at the free clinic ALL THE TIME!!
I better save that line for someone like Imogene
This will ALWAYS be one of my favorite "Designing Women" episodes!
This country desperately needs a President Julia....desperately
I'm here after SNL did a sketch about Julia and I had no idea who she was so thank you SNL
Swell said Julia...you are a legend
There was a scene in The Golden Girls that touched his subject too and it was just as powerful!
Yes, I think I remember. Are you talking about Sister of the Bride season 6 of the Golden Girls ? When Sophia and Blanche were discussing about gay people ?
