I mentioned this when you posted the last beak filing video, but if you periodically spray the nails and break with water as you do this it will drastically reduce the accumulation of heat that’s contributing to the pain he experiences when filing. Just spray water on the nails every 5-10 seconds of filings. Less dust accumulation too. Easy solution ☺️. Even though the nails are keratin based, the speed of the file creates a lot of heat that can most definitely hurt. They can feel through their nails and beak for sure.
Agreed, the friction from the dremel causes a lot of heat. I find using a nail clipper to shorten the nail before using the dremel is faster and less stressful for the animal . I always dremel after clipping to remove sharp edges.
@@blip-2024 As a person with sensitive fingers, I assure you that the pressure of the clippers bending my nail is significantly more painful 😵💫 Also the files have adjustable speed, nails do not feel heat to the same extent as skin does and I never file long enough for that either. Lots of breaks and filing it down over several days. With treats and scritches afterwards! Also offering a warm bath beforehand can soak the beak nicely n make it softer. My boy never says no when presented with a nice container with warm water!
I know obviously that animal keepers being able and educated to provide long-term care for their animal is the ideal, but seeing a keeper that acknowledges they're not able to provide said care and re-home to a more suitable place should definitely be appreciated. I worry that people feel shame when this has to happen, but there's no shame in it - it's making a hard choice that is ultimately best for the long-term care of the animal, and that should be applauded instead of fostering a sticking-it-out attitude, or thinking 'I'm sure I'll have more time soon'. My own beardie came from a decent home that simply could not give her the time and attention needed, due to multiple small children and other, more hands-on animals. She's been with me for most of her life now, and I'm always grateful that her previous family decided she needed to be rehomed - she's so important to me and I wish I could tell them that. 💚
The fact that at the end you can see just how much more he can open his mouth just speaks for itself....thank you for all the hard work you put in to caring for these amazing creatures
I feel like you missed the opportunity to name the little dude Perry😅 As always, I really appreciate the care you all show, both towards the animals and to people who ended up in sad situations and had to surrender their animals. Also, I find it hilarious that box turtles seem to be bitey.
Excellent camera work! I loved being able to see the careful dremeling. “Ducky” must feel so much better. It will be nice to see how he improves in the next few months. Thank you, Garden State Tortoise! Your posts are so educational and inspiring. I have never been lucky enough to see a wild Box Turtle, they are rare in my part of Michigan but I do get some Blanding’s now and then and it’s exciting every time.
Chris, you are always so gentle and sensitive with the turtles that come into your care after being improperly cared for. Already you have given Ducky a new lease on life, and he will only improve with time and proper nutrition. The way you hold him, and reassure him as you reshape such vital parts of his anatomy causes him not to fight you too hard. The education you give your viewers at the same time is without price, and will save so many turtles and tortoises from similar conditions in future. You are such a needed voice for those who want to live with these amazing animals…keep it coming, and using your sad examples as teaching experiences for those wishing to learn, thank you.🖤🇨🇦
It seems like it might have been the owner couldn't care for him towards the end. The shell would have been in a lot worse shape if this had been happening it's whole life.
@@tammycampbell112 oh damn. Thanks for letting me know. I'm still wondering if the owner was sick for years but I'm not excusing what happened to this little guy at all.
It seems as though if you used large nail clippers first to remove a portion of the nail and then use the nail grinder to finish and smooth the nail, it might be less stressful for the turtle.
Thank you for helping him. Just recently, my painted turtle passed away. She had a wound on her hand from being rough. We did everything we could to treat it, but ultimately she stopped eating.
I recently took on a male Hermann's (6 years of age, roughly) who was in potentially even worse shape than this... We called him Bucky, after Buck-Beak
I LOVED this video!! So informative! And Casey!! Girl, you kill me. 🤣😂. "Let him bite you." 😆. Keep up the great work, love you guys. XO from Monmouth County.
I took in one probably ten years ago from an old couple who had a pair. The female was in better shape. The male, we named Ducky too. He was in awful shape. It took quite a lot of time to reverse that damage.
Poor little chap, Ducky looks far better now he's had a trim. Our 3 E. Hermanns don't like the beak trimmer either, but we offer some food afterwards; hopefully they then realise we are helping them..
We've had a lot of fun observing the box turtles go in and out of our yard during the summer months. We see them most often in the morning hours particularly if it has rained recently. Last time we spotted one he had a big old fat caterpillar hanging out of his mouth.
I had a moment of panic that I needed to trim my turtle's nails, but then I remembered he's a red eared slider 💅 Ducky got the full spa treatment and I hope he feels bonita because he looks bonita!
I love your box turtles. I have a few box turtles myself. And some of them I’ve had since I was a kid I have three Florida box turtles and two eastern box turtles and a red footed tortoise and a desert tortoise.
I hope he feels better. I have 6 adult turtles that walk freely in my backyard. All but one have correct nails. Someone brought him to me with very short nails. That was at lest 3 years and they still aren’t long enough.
Oh poor Ducky, but boy isn’t he adorable! He’s got some spunk too! On another note, that T-Shirt Chris is wearing is from Matt Patterson’s Stone Ridge Art Studio isn’t it??
He definitely wanted some Chris burger. He will have many more years to live as a normal turtle thanks to you. You definitely took one for the team on that one, Ouch.
I am glad the guy saw that the tortoise needed more care than he could provide and surrendered it.
Technically a turtle (w/tortoise-like ways) Just sayin’.
Thank you. It will be a joy to see Ducky enjoy his new home.
The way he was staring at you when you first started trimming his nails was priceless. Pure hatred. 😂
I like how the person who surrendered Ducky had the self awareness to admit they weren’t the best thing for the pet and found someone who was
😢

As someone who gets their nails dremeled regularly I can confirm the heat gets CRAZY after only a few seconds, depending on how coarse the grit is
He's a Lucky Ducky to have found his way to Garden State Tortoise and their loving care.

That guy wasn't the original owner, anyway.
Ducky is lucky to have come to you. Hope to carry on following his story in episodes to come.
Ducky is so lucky to have made it here, best care ever
Great job! Thank you! Hope to see another progress video or two as to how Ducky is doing. Give our best to Otis and all of his friends!
Do turtles give side eye? Because it looked like Ducky was giving some serious side eye in his closeup.
😂😂
The fact that at the end you can see just how much more he can open his mouth just speaks for itself....thank you for all the hard work you put in to caring for these amazing creatures
Ducky looks SO much better, and will feel better the first time he eats w/o that overgrown beak.
Casey: “Let him bite you”
Chris: “Ok…OUCH!”
Casey: “I like him. He’s cute.”
Lmao!!🐢🐢❤️
I look forward to watching Ducky thrive! Thank you for sharing.I appreciate GST's hard work & passion...
Yes more footage of Al's place! He needs a youtube channel so we can see more of those Sulcatas!

Really love turtles and tortoises..so what you are doing is amazing.Thank you
He's definitely cute with that duck-face, but I'm glad he's got the care he needs.
And the GST HERO strikes again... Thank you so much... I really enjoy the stories & my heart thanks you for your kindness...
Well done! Didn’t realize turtles could glare, lol.
@Garden State Tortoise - You two are such a cute❤ couple 😊

I am so happy for Lucky Ducky. He was surrounded to the best person and place in the world. I was glad to see he has a lot of spunk.
love and blessings! Thank you for caring for sweet grumpy Duckie! He is adorable!
Our pleasure!
Never seen a beak on a turtle quite like that, wow! Glad the guy surrendered it to you to get it the proper care it requires.
It seems like it might have been the owner couldn't care for him towards the end. The shell would have been in a lot worse shape if this had been happening it's whole life.
It takes years for their beak to get like that.
@@tammycampbell112 oh damn. Thanks for letting me know. I'm still wondering if the owner was sick for years but I'm not excusing what happened to this little guy at all.
Yeah, I've seen one with similar condition look like a lil sombrero. He at least had some proper diet if I had to guess
Over the next few months, Dukkee plots his revenge ...
Great job guys! He looks so much better.😮😊
I am so happy that ducky got a home with you.

Thank you for helping him. Just recently, my painted turtle passed away. She had a wound on her hand from being rough. We did everything we could to treat it, but ultimately she stopped eating.

I love the collabs with you and Al.
I recently took on a male Hermann's (6 years of age, roughly) who was in potentially even worse shape than this... We called him Bucky, after Buck-Beak
I've had my Desert Ornate Boxturtle since he was hatched in 1991, have to keep up on that beak and nails, also diet, supplements, exercise
Du machst das sehr gut❤🐢🙏🙏🙏

They have so beautiful eyes... Like Otis.
Ducky. Reminds me of the character the late David McCallum played.
Is that Land before time? Cause I recall the voice actor was a little girl
@@kennethsatria6607 No it was NCIS
My heart goes out to sweet Ducky😻
Casey i think you enjoyed Chris getting bitten a lil 😂🤣 Thank goodness Ducky found his way to you 👌🏻🤗
What a sweet fellow ❤

Well done. But definitely watch you back. He took names and made a list. 😉
Really great stuff, I was amazed how different he looked at end. Love this channel and all you do.❤😮🎉

Thats an absolutely amazing transformation. Suggestion for a slightly alternative name? Lucky Ducky. 😊 I'll see myself out.

Thanks!
Wow thank you so much!!
Excellent work. He looks great!
That deformed beak is most likely because of a nutritional deficiency. He needs vitamins and minerals to help it grow back into the correct shape.
I saw,a nice turtle,two months ago,next door,the Tuttle walked,on the front neighbor's yard,and disappeared in the bushes.i try to pet it.
I moved a box turtle across our road last fall. He spent the entire trip trying to nail me. Yeah, that seemed like it would really hurt 😮
The look of indignation and fury on his face. … it must have felt so weird having your face filed down.
O my gosh he adorable 😍
He's so cute! ❤
Jimmy Durante of the turtle world.😂

I LOVE the new shirt ur wearing- Can I get one???

Shout out to the dude for surrendering ducky. It takes a lot of self awareness to admit you aren’t what an animal needs.
Where can I get that wood turtle shirt !!??
Keep up the great work !
Lucky Ducky.
I can't find an Eastern male for nothing, but people give him 4 adults 😅
