What to Focus On as a New BJJ Blue Belt (Technical Buffet Line)

  • What you I focus on as a Blue Belt? This was the BJJ question I received from Twitter. Recently one of the viewers received his BJJ Blue Belt and he's not wondering "What now?" What should he focus on to progress.
As I share in this video. Ultimately, it would be wise to consult your Brazilian Jiujitsu coach or instructor to determine their requirement for the belt. Because they may be different than mine.
One of the beautiful things about BJJ is that it's treated in many cases like an art form. With certain, at times unwritten, rules that govern the system and a self-regulatory aspect to fakers. But ultimately, we are free to sort of go about it as we please.
With that said, there is no standardization amongst the whole of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu coaches about what each belt should be exactly.
A lot is left to interpretation.
But if you were one of my Bjj Blue Belts, as I say in the video, I would jump on the technical buffet line.
Now that you have a strong foundation that you built as a BJJ White Belt, it's time to experiment and see the different things that could work for you. Instead of being focused solely on surviving, as is often the objective of white belt.
You can now test out all the stuff that's out there. Keep the things you want and discard the options that don't seem to be for you. Which will set you up nicely as a BJJ Purple Belt. Which is where I think people begin to specialize to some degree. The only way you'll know what to specialize in is to test out as much as possible.
Also, be careful not to be too worried about the newly acquired target on your back as a Blue Belt. It's no secret that when we roll with higher belts. We judge ourselves partly based on our performance with this higher ranks.
So as a new Blue Belt, BJJ White Belts are going to be pushing themselves to do well against you. Make sure you don't get too wrapped up in the need to always win against your jr training partners. Because in order to develop new weapons and test out all of the options. You've got to become ok with failing and making mistakes. It's simply how it is.
There's more information about my thoughts as a BJJ Blue Belt in the video.
I hope the video is useful to you. And Thomas, thanks for the question brother!

Just got my blue belt after class yesterday! It’s kind of crazy to me because I know I’ve been improving, but I didn’t expect to get to blue this soon. I won all three of my matches at my first tournament this past weekend and my coaches were really proud of me. Tomorrow will be my first class as a blue belt and I suppose I’ll have that target on my back. Yikes. There are a ton of new white belts at my gym and recently, even as a more advanced white belt, I’ve been helping some of them out with simple techniques. It’s pretty cool sharing what I know, and now I think the new people will look up to me more, but also they’ll probably try that much harder to destroy me haha.

Great advice and what I have been trying to do. As soon as you decide you aren't worried about not losing to lower experienced people, you begin to try new things. Hard to let that go. Also, as an older person in our group at 52, I have acknowledged that less experienced, but younger and more athletic people will beat me a fair amount of the time. I just work on my game and try to improve. Basically compete with yourself.

I'm a new blue belt (been blue for about 2 months). One of my biggest obvious weakness (of many) is my poor guard game. Against weaker opponents I try to get to closed guard and work. Against higher level dudes, I will try to get to a guard passing position (I think a relative strength of mine). From there I have a decent game from side control. I do feel exactly what youre refering to, especially when I get my guard passed by white belts but trying to keep my ego in check and most importantly, learn and improve.

This is exactly how I’ve been going about it as a blue belt (got it around a year ago). I very much have an A game (guard)… and a “pretty much everything else game”. When I roll with white belts that I know I can get the better of, I still try and get them but I just really try to focus on getting them with my everything else game. I try not to spend as much time on bottom and try to pass a lot more and stay on and finish on top. When it comes to really tough white belts or people of my skill level and beyond, I go to my A game. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.

When you first start BJJ you're so hungry to learn and experiment and submit and all this that its overwhelming. You want to do all these things but we all realized real quick that we didn't have the necessary mat time. We didn't have the experience or the skill. So what did we all use to compensate for our lack of skill: brute strength! We all go through the same process to some degree. It takes many hours to develop the finesse and start working proper angles. Just remember to tap easy; tap often. if you know he's gonna crank the shit out of your shoulder don't give it to him. Shut him down. But if it persists, and you feel that your safety is an issue then tell him that he's a cranker and that you refuse to roll with him. Straight up.

    • @Chewjitsu
      @Chewjitsu  7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

Tap early and often to avoid injury.
From there if you don't want to roll with someone for fear of them being unsafe, you can always decline.

I would sometimes get pissed when a white belt uses his strength against me and goes nuts, but take it as a learning experience. Especially when they're grabbing your esophagus with their fingers in your guard. This is partially what it would be like in a real fight. If you can chill and stop it without effort, you know you've come a long way.

Just got my blue belt about 3 weeks ago. When I started Bjj I felt that each belt not only reflects my skills and capabilities as a jiujitsu practitioner but also as a human. I told myself when I become a blue belt in bjj, I also wanted to become a blue belt in life. What does that mean to me? It means there's a level of responsibility, I now have made many mistakes and learned from them and I feel it is my duty in Bjj (and life) to move away from my bad habits, mistakes, and tendencies set forth in my white belt days. Im committed to becoming the best possible bjj athlete I can be and also the best human I can be. I've started a page @theprocess222 on instagram if anyone on here wants to see what it takes to be a champion, follow me and watch my process to human evolution. Thanks Chewie. Just chill with that attitude bro .. it's a white belt thing when you advance that will change by then you'll be harbouring a few injurys and won't wanna roll like a feral cat anymore... You will want to improve your game and to do that you won't be rolling at 💯 %strength...if it's a strongman comp you want go lift weights and armwrestle ... And trust me ur probably not the most popular guy at your gym ... And besides all that the blue belts are probably just trying new techniques on you because if they turned it up to 💯% you'd be tapping within a few seconds and you'd probably get the shits and sook about it

Im 30 years old with a family and work construction, injury isnt an option for me. My goal at the end of a roll is to not be tired. I go very light, and if i win it's through technique. That comment was satirical and hyperbolic, which is obvious to people with not so big of an ego.

don´t spend money on anything less than 3rd degree black belt unless he is a champion in competion. ask your instructor, what have you won? if nothing, he is a no one. don´t spend money on a joke.
