The bass and tone cut reminds me of the Rickenbacker 3000, and I don’t understand why it’s not been used more in passive applications.
The Cutlass was a Ernie Ball P bass, although Musicman did make a Cutlass back in the Leo days, but it was a Stingray with a graphite neck. The L1000 was Leo's take on the super P bass

I’ve been marathoning your videos it seems recently as I was looking for a new bass. I ended up ordering a Ray35HH, but I already want a G&L now lol. Your videos are very informative, thank you!
The "OMG" mode is basically one of the coils passing through a capacitor, which is what rolls off the trebles for that coil. This summed up with the other coil makes the tone sound like having a bass boost, but it's really one coil normal + another coil with trebles down. I absolutely love that setting, and wish I could have that in my G&L.
As a recent GL convert with a L1000 and a jb2, i have to admit I love the one great sound Lobster got with the Cutlass! Now I’m gassing for the 2 pickup version... I forget what the model name is, has a PJ setup. I prefer the sound and feel of rosewood fretboards for my Fenderish basses,so that may play into my preference for the sound of the Cutlass here. Great video, Lobster!
Oh man! Thanks for doing this! It’s wild, isolated I thought I preferred the G&L. It has so much character and definition to it... but once you were playing to the drums I much preferred the Cutlass. The Cutlass on its own feels a little more dull... but in a mix it sits just how a P bass should.
Actually the G&L SB1 is pretty rad. th-cam.com/video/B34i6xlbQFc/w-d-xo.html The bonus is that Leo's new bridge designs included side locking setscrews so once you have your intonation and action set, you can lock your saddles into place as a block.
If I understand correctly, the EBMM Cutlass does indeed feature a split single-coil pickup but I believe there are two stacked magnets for each of the four coils while a Precision Bass typically has one magnet per coil. I agree that the Cutlass sounds awesome!! I bought a Caprice partly under the influence of this review in the same Heritage Tobacco finish. The L-1000 is sweet too.
@@LowEndLobster Ya don’t say ... hmmm. The pricing makes me feel like I got very lucky to secure mine for about $1,400 two months ago given how much some of them are going for right now.
@@LowEndLobster i would recommend checking out the kiloton. Either the usa or the indonesian made. You seem to be a fan of mm basses so it would be fitting. I tried a jazz bass of this company once. It looked like a classic fender jazz bass with the warped g&l headstock. I think it cost around 500$. the build quality (me being a stickler and all....) and the tone were unreal for that money. Happy new year man.
Love my Cutlass, and I used it in the studio recently. I also love my Caprice, which is an absolutely fantastic bass. Great video, Lobster. Still waiting on the Stingray Special vs. Sterling video haha. Also, a Lobsterchat with Sterling Ball, if possible.
I think I would pick the Cutlass over the G&L. Somehow the G&L is not that appealing to me, though I get that it is a different approach compared to the Cutlass. 😉 Regards
Really nice video. Those are both great sounding basses, but I lean toward the Cutlass - tone wise. I usually play passive basses and love them for their purity. The Cutlass you have on this video is really stout. It has the kind of tone that would fit in just about any situation and hold the low end beautifully. Now I want one.
When the Tampa Bay Buccaneers got Tom Brady from the New England Patriots they won the Super Bowl with him the 1st year. Likewise, the G&L Is using the Music Man pickup and sounds better in my opinion All 3 tones "brung it!" with beautiful sonic authority! PERFECT For a band setting! Yesterday I purchased a G&L Kiloton bass & IT Rocks also!
The L-1000 is just a stingray with the pickup in the p bass location. It obviously has more switches, but are they necessary? If you want that sound could always add a stingray style humbucker to a p bass. Have an active two band for the bridge pickup with a single parallel series switch and a passive tone control for the p split coil. Get the modern sound and vintage tone in one instrument. Idk just a thought/a project I’ll take on one day.
Thanks Dean! The pickups of the Stingray and G&L are VERY different... BUT, you can buy G&L pickups direct from them... and Stingray pickup housings on Ebay.... Stay tuned ;)
I'm usually all-in for versatility, and while the G&L sounded great, imho the MM just sounded better than any of the L-1000's settings. This, combined with the neck finish and the looks (I like pickguards), makes it the winner of this round for me.
Apart from tone, the Cutlass has a much wider body shape than the G&L. Was there a noticeable difference in the way they sat in your lap? If there was, it did not seem to affect the way that you played each. Overall, as much as I love the tone of the Cutlass, I think I would prefer the L1000. The tone is a-ma-zing.
@@LowEndLobster i have an L-1000 with an empress wood body, super light. It’s very nicely contoured, and i like the smaller than a p-bass body size a lot.
Nice video. Small correction - Cutlass doesn't have the typical EBMM oil&wax finish, it has a satin poly finish on the neck. Say, which one do you prefer tonally? If only just a bit?
Great. I just watch your video about your signal chain and what you’re about. I too am a hobbyist. I’m embarrassed to say I have no experience with active basses. That’s why the L1000 and SB1 appeal to me with the MFD PUs. Did you find the signal a little hot to manage? I have read commits in forums where owners complained about controlling it. What’s your thought?
@@jamessechman8560 No need to be embarrassed! We all explore the world of bass at our own pass... pace? The MFD is a spicy pickup and OMG mode can definitely be troublesome for some amps. The amp I use in my videos has some built in compression which helps me a lot when exploring the EQs of some basses. I'm able to demonstrate the change in tone with the increase in bass/treble without overloading the amp or interface. I keep the amp EQ and settings the same for all my videos so the only real difference is the bass. OMG mode definitely commands a lighter touch too IMO
Comparing the MM cutlass with a G&L- LB100 would be interesting! Having owned an original G&L -L 1000, was a very versatile bass...regert trading it! ( bought a MM stingray-5 ). Like both basses featured, also how would the L-1000 stack-up against a MM- stingray? Excellent craftsmanship on both basses.
Its really interesting to see how Leo's evolution of the one pickup bass went. Single in the neck position to the split p. Then a humbucker in the bridge position. And finally a humbucker in the neck position. It seems that the single pup g&l was the refinement of his original '51 design. I do love g&l's, but they have never seemed to garner the same attention fenders and musicmans do. Which is sad.
Huh. Can’t believe I missed this one when it came out. I’ve actually owned both of these and ended up loving the MM and selling the L1000. For me no matter how many tone “options” I have on a single bass I end up finding the one I like and shaping EQ slightly as needed so it ends up being moot. OMG mode was fun, but too much in a live mix - maybe I didn’t give it enough of a chance. I found the G&L sounded great on its own but kind of lifeless on stage. My Cutlass is maybe the best playing bass I’ve ever owned, and on stage with a little drive it cuts perfectly through a mix without overpowering anything
Ok i loved GandL UNTIL yyou started playing Cutlass wow !!!!.... I think this is the most versatile bass tone ever developed by Leo ? Its Pbass with stingray mashed in correct ratio lol...what do you think?
Riju is correct, the Cutlass was actually not designed by Leo. It's more of an offshoot of his legacy, as there is a lot of Leo Fender influence. The L1000 was designed by Leo, but the CLF reissue does have some modern upgrades like the neck joint.
Sounds like my G&L Tribute Kiloton. I really like the MFD humbucker. Not really sure what the difference is between the G&L 1000 and the Kiloton other then pickup placement? Thank you Lobster, keep playing and giving us great content!
@@PorchBass I like thinner, jazz type necks. I have three Peavey basses if that tells you anything and I find the neck very comfortable! Hope that helps.

Hard to call the L1000 a "P Bass", since it has such different tonal characteristics besides the pickup position. Still, it always was a cool bass. I had two 5-string versions a long time ago.
LowEndLobster they were fun and sounded pretty good, though had some massive fret sprout that needed taking care of. I stopped buying G&L in the end because they had some eccentric quality control and customer service.
some other guy on YT ran his guitar around the block and found that a power transformer had a faulty shield and the power company came out and fixed it..no more noise lol
@@LowEndLobster Fun Fact: if you can hear your ballast buzzing, you can harvest energy pretty easily from your lights. I was working on a regenerative light fixture at work before I changed groups and had to build a new lab with none of those parts in it. I changed a couple components on the board; they're literally the test circuits in the data sheet, but the breakout board has footprints already populated for the circuits and what you want to do, so I just changed the values for the operation mode I wanted from the chip. Then I took 4 blank copper clad panels and combined them to make two big panels and then just held them up to a light and it started generating ~100mA of current lol www.digikey.com/catalog/en/partgroup/ltc3588-energy-harvester-breakout-board/51896
Would the G&L LB-100 be a good bass to compare to the EBMM Cutlass? In any case, as much as I like the G&L L-1000, the EBMM Cutlass gets the nod from me. I simply like the sound and playability more.
Great question Anthony! I love it. I liked it at first but after exploring it a bit I really appreciate what it is (and what it isn't). Funny enough, I feel like this bass is purpose built to play "Carry on wayward son" over and over again with its mean and meaty bass tone.... and I do.... I think i read somewhere the Caprice has a 1.5” nut Jazz bass style neck, too.(?)
Hi Lobster, they both sound great. I would go for the G&L for more versatility. Great video as always! 👍🏾🙏🏿
Thanks Trevor!
It’s really close....love both. I think I would go home with the L1000. They both sounded great but the G&L is so much more versatile.
Thanks Keith!
Oh man! Thanks for doing this! It’s wild, isolated I thought I preferred the G&L. It has so much character and definition to it... but once you were playing to the drums I much preferred the Cutlass. The Cutlass on its own feels a little more dull... but in a mix it sits just how a P bass should.
Thanks Peter :)
Awesome video! That G&L is amazing! But I still think I prefer the Musicman. Great comparison!
Thanks Roper!
thanks for checking if leo was right again 30 years after his first pbass and nobody can do better!
Thank you :)
Actually the G&L SB1 is pretty rad.
th-cam.com/video/B34i6xlbQFc/w-d-xo.html
The bonus is that Leo's new bridge designs included side locking setscrews so once you have your intonation and action set, you can lock your saddles into place as a block.
This is awesome!!!
Thanks Sam!
Real talk, I would love to see a p bass shoot out. Nothing beats the sound of the P-bass.
Thanks Lex! I think we'll be making this happen :)
Yes!!! Another video!! I litterly look for a new video from you as soon as I get home and hit the toilet lmao
XD
If I understand correctly, the EBMM Cutlass does indeed feature a split single-coil pickup but I believe there are two stacked magnets for each of the four coils while a Precision Bass typically has one magnet per coil. I agree that the Cutlass sounds awesome!! I bought a Caprice partly under the influence of this review in the same Heritage Tobacco finish. The L-1000 is sweet too.
Thanks Sam! I saw on Reverb that someone in Germany had a stock of new Caprices including a natural one.... my GAS.
@@LowEndLobster Ya don’t say ... hmmm. The pricing makes me feel like I got very lucky to secure mine for about $1,400 two months ago given how much some of them are going for right now.
Great reviews, man. You're doing something great in here, I've learnt a lot since I found your channel. Keep it awesome.
Thanks Mauro! I appreciate it :) so glad you're enjoying the videos
Like the cutlass the best
Thanks Ryan!
Waiting for more videos. Cort and Harley Benton really have it going now. G&L is on my list first. Thanks.
Thanks for the great comparison vid. That G & L sounds and looks great. The tone of that Cutlass, however, is next level and then some.
That G&L switch to single coil does it for me. Been playing bass 40 years, the hum in my ears is constant. A little bass hum is nothing...Ha
It reminded me of dusty Hill and the zz top tele bass tone! Open and grindy
Exactly! Loved it!
Thanks John :)
Cutlass does it for me!
Thanks Moises :)
Some g&l appreciation is well deserved.
Thanks Swain! Definitely going to be checking out more G&L in 2021!
Cutlass for me. I dream about it. Yamaha BB's are nice P basses as well. PJ's, actually.
Thanks Tiago! We got some BB content coming up :)
they both sound very nice. the g and l has more variation but, do we really NEED it??? The answer is yes, yes we do😁
:D Thanks Jason!
Thanks Riju! I'll make that one eventually ;). I'd LOVE to get Sterling on a Lobsterchat!
Still waiting on this one to decide if I need a Stingray Special lol
I think I would pick the Cutlass over the G&L. Somehow the G&L is not that appealing to me, though I get that it is a different approach compared to the Cutlass. 😉
Regards
Thanks Al!
They both sounded good, LowEndLobster, but I would go for the G&L I like the slimmer body and that bass looks great!!!
Thanks Guy :)
Thanks Chris! I agree, the Cutlass tone is just butttttah that can just be spread over anything.
Love them both. If I had to pick one it would be the Cutlass.
That's a plan right there! Even more versatile! G&L sell the pickup I think around £100. Turbocharged p basses for all!
Lobster, test drive for us!
Thanks Dean! The pickups of the Stingray and G&L are VERY different... BUT, you can buy G&L pickups direct from them... and Stingray pickup housings on Ebay.... Stay tuned ;)
Both sound fantastic
But gnl has more options.
MFD pickups do indeed rule🥂
Indeed! I actually snagged some pickups from G&L for some future projects :)
I'm usually all-in for versatility, and while the G&L sounded great, imho the MM just sounded better than any of the L-1000's settings. This, combined with the neck finish and the looks (I like pickguards), makes it the winner of this round for me.
G&L FTW!
Thanks abouc :)
I noticed that too, but it also appeared the Cutlass body was thinner in depth. That would be a plus in my book.
I personally found the cutlass more comfy. But the G&L was not uncomfortable by any means
Thank you! You are correct! Very impressed with that light satin poly, fooled me!... I dig the Cutlass a wee bit more ;)
Great G&L review! Do you have plans for a SB-1 review?
Thanks James! Yes, hoping to snag more G&Ls to check out including an SB-1 for an apples to apples :)
Love 'em both but that Cutlass tho!
Thanks Bass Clef!
Thanks Ralph!
Thanks James! Indeed, G&L definitely never got the same attention. I'm definitely going to have a closer look at them in 2021 :)
It sounds between a mm and a p which is straight sick.
Cutless is king for me, I'd love one 😣 G&L rocks tho
Thanks Ryan!
The G&L is SICK!!!
Ok i loved GandL UNTIL yyou started playing Cutlass wow !!!!.... I think this is the most versatile bass tone ever developed by Leo ? Its Pbass with stingray mashed in correct ratio lol...what do you think?
It wasn't developed by Leo. It was Music Man's attempt to get into the passive market that Fender commands. Still my Number 1 bass.
Riju is correct, the Cutlass was actually not designed by Leo. It's more of an offshoot of his legacy, as there is a lot of Leo Fender influence. The L1000 was designed by Leo, but the CLF reissue does have some modern upgrades like the neck joint.
Both awesome. If I had to pick it would be the G&L.
Sounds like my G&L Tribute Kiloton. I really like the MFD humbucker. Not really sure what the difference is between the G&L 1000 and the Kiloton other then pickup placement? Thank you Lobster, keep playing and giving us great content!
Does your kiloton have a wide, thick and flat neck? It's a great looking option....
@@PorchBass I like thinner, jazz type necks. I have three Peavey basses if that tells you anything and I find the neck very comfortable! Hope that helps.
Thanks Andrew! Great question. I don't think the kiloton has the same tone circuit, but I'm looking forward to checking one out
I love them both. I sure wish these were in a giveaway ; )
;P
Both sound great. I would like to see the G&L in a fretless, that would sound hot in OMG mode.
Ooooooooh, I like where your head's at!
that's a whole heap of nice bass...
Thank you!
Now you need to get your hands on an EBMM Caprice! I wanna hear what that PJ can do!
Thanks Nathan! They're definitely on my radar
I would love to see you do a review of the wolf jb4. It's from aio (all in one) guitars and what makes it special is that it's a neck through jazz bass for $450. Theres verry little material on it on youtube and I would love to see a review of it! Great video btw!
Thanks Nathan! I like those AIO folks, will check one out at some point :)
I wish the G&L pickup for this model was in the MM sweet spot
Indeed, will definitely check out the Kiloton at some point which looks to be more along those lines.... and I got some MFD pickups and some blank stingray pickup housings... we're gonna have fun ;P
Interesting .. But in Denmark , i don´t think i can get that G&L bass .. But i kan get the G&L Tribute L-2000 NT MP , but that´s a active bass ... Thinking about a hail Mary Marie Bye .
Thanks Mougaard! I'm not familiar with the international G&L market. Is importing very costly there?
@@LowEndLobster No cost importing inside EU and Thomann have free shipping .. our problem is the US and mabye UK in the future .
@@TorbenMougaard26 Ah, understood. I wish they'd do a Tribute L1k! I definitely plan on checking out the Tribute Kiloton and Fallout soon :)
@@LowEndLobster Doo you know What .. I just bought - G&L Tribute Kiloton Irish Ale
@@TorbenMougaard26 NICE! Those look awesome, they're definitely on the list to check out very soon!
The link to the schematic of the G&L is a dead link. I was hoping to look at the circuit.
I'll see if I can get a new link up!
Lobby that G&L,IS A BRUSIER!
Thanks Floyd :)
I've never played either, which is weird because I've owned over 100 basses through the years. I've been a G&L fan since 1997 but that Cutlass may be the coolest P that ever... um, Ped. 😂
Thanks Tim!
MJC Iron Works on those? great sound!
Indeed! :)
Hard to call the L1000 a "P Bass", since it has such different tonal characteristics besides the pickup position. Still, it always was a cool bass. I had two 5-string versions a long time ago.
Thanks Marc! What'd you think of the 5'ers?
LowEndLobster they were fun and sounded pretty good, though had some massive fret sprout that needed taking care of. I stopped buying G&L in the end because they had some eccentric quality control and customer service.
Do you have fluorescent lights in your room? time to swap for LED. Less noise.
some other guy on YT ran his guitar around the block and found that a power transformer had a faulty shield and the power company came out and fixed it..no more noise lol
Nope, LED and incandescent.
Then I took 4 blank copper clad panels and combined them to make two big panels and then just held them up to a light and it started generating ~100mA of current lol

Would the G&L LB-100 be a good bass to compare to the EBMM Cutlass? In any case, as much as I like the G&L L-1000, the EBMM Cutlass gets the nod from me. I simply like the sound and playability more.
It indeed would! If only I had one ;P . Thanks Sam!
The G&L SB-2 or SB-1 would smoke the Cutlass.
The second bass have warmer sound i think
Thanks Ram!
do I want a group of incrementally better sounding rigs or a full splay of possibilities?
Not saying!
;)
How do I feel about these? Extremely envious.
:)
@LowEndLobster Hey Lobster, how are you feeling about that L-1000 a few months on? Cheers.
Great question Anthony! I love it. I liked it at first but after exploring it a bit I really appreciate what it is (and what it isn't). Funny enough, I feel like this bass is purpose built to play "Carry on wayward son" over and over again with its mean and meaty bass tone.... and I do.... I do play that song over and over again on this bass. XD
Cutlass!
Thanks Pawel :)
I’d really like to hear your thoughts and playing the G&L 1000 vs a Marcus Miller M 5/7.
Thanks
