Thanks again for inviting me on this trip! The Madison area has a special place in my heart from the two years I spent there after college. It was really nice to pass by a lot of old haunts, and then to bike through the Driftless Region, which I’d first heard about here on your channel! This was Day 2 of my first tour ever. I took Amtrak from my home in Chicago to Milwaukee, and from Milwaukee I biked my way across Wisconsin to Minneapolis. After splitting off from you guys, I took the routes you and Jeff recommended. Hwy T to Hwy 23 to get to Reedsburg, and Hwy 61 in Minnesota to get from Winona to Hastings. And from Reedsburg to Perrot State Park, I completed my first century too! Also, at minute 53 of the video, I’m pretty sure those bike campers you passed were the ones who camped across the way from me at Sandhill Station! Super nice people! We chatted a bunch in the evening, and in the morning they gave me a map of bike routes in the area since I’d mentioned that I wasn’t sure of my route for the next day. I really appreciate all the kindness and generosity that you, Jeff, and everyone else on the trip shared with me. Running into you and tagging along for the day was part of the magic that really made the trip special.
Raul meeting Bike Farmer in the wild and then going on a little side bike camping trip. What a legend! Great to hear about the rest of your trip. I hope you get to enjoy more adventures like this.
Raul, in 2015, I came the opposite direction you did, from Minneapolis to Hastings, then crossed into Wisconsin to ride south. Crossed again into Wabasha, south on 61 to Winona. It was a Thing I decided to do to mark 45 years on this marble. Great memories, riding through the Driftless.
I enjoyed the build series but the best was this video. How cool to randomly meet someone traveling on his bike loaded with packs and have him say "Hey you're the Bike Farmer". Your fame is spreading far and wide. Just goes to show how tight the bike community is. Love your videos, learn something from almost all of them.
I end up "consuming" a lot of bike content. High production value, sponsored, latest greatest most expensive bike stuff, etc etc. But this video beats all of that. Thanks for taking us along.
Meeting someone you've never met and having them come-along. That's not something you'd typically do in a car. Very cool. Not sure how I feel about paying to use a bike trail. They want us out of our cars but the fees go to trail maintenance so there's that. And those trails you ride are beautiful. O-K, going for a ride in the dusty, dirty hills after watching this one. Another good one here. Cheers. One more, thing; could the wobble be fork geometry? I really don't know. I ride motorcycles too and wobble is a really bad thing on those. Whew. Cheers again.
@@bkefrmr I know you're fixated on Q, but they're Guinea Fowl, they are noisy as hell, (Sound like strangling babies) but great for training dogs, as they don't fly well. More than you wanted to know, I know. In a previous stage of evolution, they may have been related to the DinoDuckie.
Just wish these types of videos made aware of the more entry level bags/ systems to get our foot in the door. I totally understand buy once cry once, but sometimes we on lesser budgets have to buy 2-4 times before sucking it up, but it got us out there.
This video made me smile. Until Raul left…. then I was kinda sad. I would miss him on the rest of this bike camp trip I wasn’t on. I do hope he made the rest of his trip safe and had a good time. Looked like a nice bunch of folks. Bike of the year goes to Revo Cycle owners ride. That is amazing. If I ever make my way to that part of the country I’ll need to stop there and get one of those water bottles.
I loved this series. The one thing about the Surley corner bars: if I ever got some, I think I'd put bar-end reverse break levers on the tops, and bar-end gear shifters on the bottoms. I looked around the net, and I haven't seen anyone try it, so maybe that's because it wouldn't work well, but in my mind's eye it would be a perfect setup for those bars.
I think the reason you don't see it is because the bars are meant to use trigger shifters and mimic a drop bar setup. most people if they have bar end they would just use a drop bar. That said I don't see a reason why that would not work, you could even use bar end shifters on the nubs to mimic shifter on the hoods.
It's always worth it to try things. Sometimes they stay on the bike for a while, sometimes it's like 2 blocks and nope. I switched over some bar shifters from regular drop bars to some outswept bars just because they were already there and I'd say the main complaint is that in that configuration I'm often bumping the shifters on stuff and starting off with the chain on one cog and the derailleur in some other gear.
One word describes what you and your bike channel mean to me. Edifying. Raul, I wish you the very best on your journeys. May they all be safe and better than you expected. Harv
I've been watching for several months, I enjoy all the content but this one was my favourite. The infrastructure in the US seems light years ahead of the UK. I commute to work on my bike and I want to spend more leisure time riding but where I live there is nothing like the cycle routes you guys were using, I'm so jealous. Great video bike farmer and I love the new bike.
Awesome adventure! Than you for sharing. Recently discovered your channel, and so appreciate the knowledge you are imparting, the work you put into it, and the stoke you bring. Cheers from Canada!
I have watched this Series from start to finish. There’s one word that springs to mind “Fabulous!” Well done Andy, fabulous achievement in building the bike that’s ‘Good Enough for Who It’s For’ (GefWif) and Well done on what I consider to be Fabulous content and presentation. Thank You 🫵👍
What an amazing video. I'm so happy and proud of you. Beautiful day, awesome ride, amazing people and all these with a bike that you built from scratch. You're the man!
Absolutely love this content. The build series was great and the maiden voyage series really brought it all together. This is everything that is good and right about bicycling, as a profession, a hobby, where bikes can take you, and the stories we gain from our adventures. Inspiring. Outstanding!
I do like your kind of down to earth biking thing (or whatever you call it) - very practical, maybe a bit too obsessed with low end bikes. I think there is a good middle of the road well below the European superbikes but still above your approach on cycling. You talk a lot about the "most practical" everyday/every person bike .. but i have yet to see one of THE best everyday bikes in your videos ... the classic Dutch bike. I cannot think of a more comfortable everyday bike than the classic Dutch. Low step through and indestructible frames. Might be a European thing, but there certainly are accesoires that you neve seem to touch .. that i consider absolutely essential: - you never install internal gear hubs, despite them being MUCH more reliable, needing a lot less maintenance and being more than sufficient for everyday usage. Certainly much better than detrailieurs. So why no Pinion gears - even the lower end ones. - you never install axle dynamos it seems. Living in a very wet country .. those things beat rim dynamos any time. Along with capacitor lights .. they are much more reliable than any other light system. - you also never (or have you?) install disc brakes? .. I would have expected you to install disc breaks on your hiking bike with all the added weight. Objectively - they are much more reliable, are they not? Other than that, it seems like a nice cycling community you have there. The roads appear a bit dangerous .. with the cars driving by without physical separation .. but at least they seem to take care.
The bike looks beautiful with the tan walled tires, sounds like it rides as great as it looks. It's always nice to see the calmer size of the US, you live in a really stunning place.
Old Man Mountain racks and Robert Axle Project skewers both made in same building in Bend, OR. And both will share a booth at Made show in PDX in 2 weeks p.
I was looking forward to this video and it did not disappoint! I loved the scenery, bikes, and overall journey. And I'm glad your new bike turned out well for its intended purpose! Thanks for effort in sharing this wonderful video :).
Thank you for posting your build series and bikepacking for beginners videos. They're wonderful. I noticed you are using a Brooks Flyer saddle. I have one of those on my Long Haul Truck, it's great. I particularly like the like your phases "Way More Better" & "Good Enough For Who It's For." I've given you credit for those phases several times, now they are mind too.
Greetings from Ireland Mr Farmer Sir!! Trails look spectacular in your area. Just wanted to say a big Thank You for the super content you put out. Fair play and keep it up!
The birds on the road are guinea fowl. Not the brightest of animals. You live in a beautiful part of the world Andy. I'd love to do some cycle touring somewhere around there. Quite different from where I live in Western Australia.
In Fitchburg/Madison the five points / the five corners Signage now officially says the “Dunn’s marsh bicycle roundabout” (and some basic mountain bike trails right at that intersection = with a trail pass credit card machine daily/yearly available right there. More technical mountain bike trails just 2 miles or so south and west on the military ridge State Trail)!🎉
Wow! What a great series!! I am so glad you are happy with your bike build. And this last video makes me want to get up early tmrw morning and ride my local trail. You are so fortunate to have such a good network of trails. And glad you get a nice tailwind. Here in Central FL, there is hardly such a thing. Seems like no matter what direction I ride, I have a headwind!! Thank you so much for your videos. Please keep making them. Keep pedaling!!
Andy, that was a superb video. I never knew that there were so many trails in your part of Wisconsin. I lived for 20 years way North of you in Houghton, MI. It's a shame that the cycling opportunities in both areas are not that well publicised better. Thanks for sharing.😀👍
What a great video, just like being there. That bike is awesome. With those dropouts, would it make an amazing single-speed? That means another bike build for bike-packing maybe..? 😂 Great job BikeFarmer, had to watch it a second time I enjoyed it so much. Thanks!

Great memories, riding through the Driftless.
That's nuts! Don't you love when some happenstance throws off your plans in a good way!!
Tip of the Bike Cap to you Raul for saying hello and thanking the Bike Farmer.
Great first ride, sir.
Man, that is some fantastic bicycle infrastructure! I'm jealous.
Me too. Where I live in California isn't terrible but we can't hold a candle to your neck of the woods...
Funny that if you took the bike track, you wouldn't have met Raúl all this little things
Way to go, Raul!🎉
I love that you roped a random tourer into the group!
I end up "consuming" a lot of bike content. High production value, sponsored, latest greatest most expensive bike stuff, etc etc. But this video beats all of that. Thanks for taking us along.
One of your best videos!
Thanks for saying that! It was a tough edit! Still learning the new camera and mic setup but I’m getting there! ✌️❤️🚴🏼♂️
Bikefarmer watching “bikefarmer” = nice🎉😂
Thanks for bringing us along Andy!!!
Looks like a nice trip. I did spy the Dead Kennedys sticker on the bottle. 👍
I love the stealth electric dude.

Absolutely envious of your biking infrastructure and I don't even ride.
Wow, what an amazing place to ride a bike. I’m so jealous. One of my favorite videos ever. Thanks
Love the DK sticker!
What a great build and a great series! The birds are guinea fowl - Livestock for the poultry farmer that doesn't think chickens are loud enough.
Those are guinea fowl I ran into the same batch the other day on the way to Madison
Quinea Fowl! Amazing! I thought they were Dinoduckies!

Hell yeah! Raoul rules. Way to represent all the cities of the north midwest by bike tour and train no less! Doesn't get better than that in my book!
Awesome video. Love camping and biking. Didn’t consider both at the same time. Have to give it a try. Looks like a great time.
My Grandma used to say "now were cookin' with gas'. Looks like a really great time on the bike.
Nice video you finished in my hometown, across the river is Gloucester point and 6 miles too my house.
Enjoyed the video.
The maiden flight!! I've been looking forward to this 🇳🇴
Hell yes! Thanks for the awesome series! I’m glad the bike came out good enough.👍🏼
“I smoke roadies in sandals, with a 30 pack of beer up here…”
Love it. Hella stealth.
God I hate cycling hippies
Enjoyed it. All those bike trails were made well after my time in Madison in the 60s, but it felt like a bike friendly place even back then.
Bike Farmer watching Bike Farmer. My first thought was that scene in Spaceballs where they were watching Spaceballs.
I've been watching for several months, I enjoy all the content but this one was my favourite. The infrastructure in the US seems light years ahead of the UK. man, I need to do more weekend bike backing trips. This was awesome!
Hey Bike Farmer. 71 now but your video reminded me of doing the MS-150 years ago. Thanks for filming while riding. Enjoyed your video!!
What a great series! Thank You Mr. Farmer.👍
Only 4 minutes in, but loving this encounter with Raul. Also love love love seeing all-city space horses in the wild (Even if it's just on a video).
I love my space horse, never selling it (unless someone wants to trade for a disk one…
Very cool - Next summer I'm doing a tour in Michigan. So many great trails up here
Just a fantastic documentary. Enjoyed watching it and it's also inspiring me to do the same.
What a great series! I'm really jealous of your infrastructure! It's pretty amazing.
I'll never forget seeing Jeff's Salsa parked outside of the bank in Madison in 1997. Glad it's still on the road.
Thanks for this. Next time maybe ya meet up with them Genosack boys ha!
What a beautiful place!
Awesome adventure! Than you for sharing. Recently discovered your channel, and so appreciate the knowledge you are imparting, the work you put into it, and the stoke you bring. Cheers from Canada!
Would love for you to show and review one of those Rohloff hubs Raoul is using.
Great conclusion to a great series. Looks like beautiful riding around where you live
Enjoy a beer and a burger!
What a wonderful bookend to this epic of a series.
That group shot was perfect. Loved this series. Thank you!

That was an awesome adventure!! Definitely a proper build!! Thanks for taking us with 😀
Great story telling with this shake-out biking/camping trip.
Great video. It really shows the great trails in this part of the state. The bike looks awesome too!
Very well done! Thank you for this and all your wholesome content.
Thank you for taking us along
What an amazing video. I'm so happy and proud of you. Beautiful day, awesome ride, amazing people and all these with a bike that you built from scratch. You're the man!

Looks like a lot of fun. I gotta tell you though, salt water is where it is at. You just have to fight to keep everything clean.
@16:20 You are absolutely correct, that is a pretty bike. The horizontal top tube and the bare metal finish really make it!
Super bike lanes round you - wish we had them in the uk!
Wisconsin does have some of the best riding in the Midwest. I was able to ride the Sparta Elroy trail earlier this spring I enjoy your touring videos.
Really great end to the bike build series. I know you were frustrated at times but the whole thing came together.
Am I the only one that thinks Raul has et on the front of his bike ? This is a great story, cheers Andy, look out for the bridge trolls !
“History For Granite” is actually a super interesting channel! 😂

Might have been the best looking bike on the trip!
Loved every minute. So relaxing. And I‘ll be taking a page from your book regarding your setup. Thanks, mate!
Best video so far. I loved the packing and loading information. Too bad it took a month to get around to watch!
"What the hell are those things?"... ROFLMAO!!! Brilliant
Guinea Fowl! Guineas eat bunches of bugs!
Thanks for the escape.
Great video. Military Ridge is one of my favorites. I'll be taking a ride out to Dodgeville from Verona one of these days

This is marvelous. I'm moving to Madison in a few days. I'd love to meet up with you guys when I get settled.
Audio is on point keep me rolling Bikeguy Thank you, Mike from Southern California 🎉🎉
My favorite video possibly that you've ever done. Had to watch it on the big screen

so good, corner bars that are wider than surly and the 31.8mm dia have extended my riding life shoulder wise
CONGRATULATIONS!!! GREAT JOB WITH THE BUILD!! THANKS FOR ANOTHER GREAT VID!
Thank you very much.
Great video love from the UK .
What a great video, just like being there. That bike is awesome. With those dropouts, would it make an amazing single-speed? That means another bike build for bike-packing maybe..? 😂 Great job BikeFarmer, had to watch it a second time I enjoyed it so much. Thanks!
And I thought it was me you watched!!😊
