    Thanks again for inviting me on this trip! The Madison area has a special place in my heart from the two years I spent there after college. It was really nice to pass by a lot of old haunts, and then to bike through the Driftless Region, which I’d first heard about here on your channel!
    This was Day 2 of my first tour ever. I took Amtrak from my home in Chicago to Milwaukee, and from Milwaukee I biked my way across Wisconsin to Minneapolis. After splitting off from you guys, I took the routes you and Jeff recommended. Hwy T to Hwy 23 to get to Reedsburg, and Hwy 61 in Minnesota to get from Winona to Hastings. And from Reedsburg to Perrot State Park, I completed my first century too!
    Also, at minute 53 of the video, I’m pretty sure those bike campers you passed were the ones who camped across the way from me at Sandhill Station! Super nice people! We chatted a bunch in the evening, and in the morning they gave me a map of bike routes in the area since I’d mentioned that I wasn’t sure of my route for the next day.
    I really appreciate all the kindness and generosity that you, Jeff, and everyone else on the trip shared with me. Running into you and tagging along for the day was part of the magic that really made the trip special.

      Raul meeting Bike Farmer in the wild and then going on a little side bike camping trip. What a legend! Great to hear about the rest of your trip. I hope you get to enjoy more adventures like this.

      Raul, in 2015, I came the opposite direction you did, from Minneapolis to Hastings, then crossed into Wisconsin to ride south. Crossed again into Wabasha, south on 61 to Winona. It was a Thing I decided to do to mark 45 years on this marble.
      Great memories, riding through the Driftless.

    I enjoyed the build series but the best was this video. How cool to randomly meet someone traveling on his bike loaded with packs and have him say "Hey you're the Bike Farmer". Your fame is spreading far and wide. Just goes to show how tight the bike community is. Love your videos, learn something from almost all of them.

    Meeting someone you've never met and having them come-along. That's not something you'd typically do in a car. Very cool. Not sure how I feel about paying to use a bike trail. They want us out of our cars but the fees go to trail maintenance so there's that. And those trails you ride are beautiful. O-K, going for a ride in the dusty, dirty hills after watching this one. Another good one here. Cheers.
    One more, thing; could the wobble be fork geometry? I really don't know. I ride motorcycles too and wobble is a really bad thing on those. Whew. Cheers again.

    Just wish these types of videos made aware of the more entry level bags/ systems to get our foot in the door. I totally understand buy once cry once, but sometimes we on lesser budgets have to buy 2-4 times before sucking it up, but it got us out there.

    I loved this series. The one thing about the Surley corner bars: if I ever got some, I think I'd put bar-end reverse break levers on the tops, and bar-end gear shifters on the bottoms. I looked around the net, and I haven't seen anyone try it, so maybe that's because it wouldn't work well, but in my mind's eye it would be a perfect setup for those bars.

    • @electrocit673
      @electrocit673 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I think the reason you don't see it is because the bars are meant to use trigger shifters and mimic a drop bar setup. most people if they have bar end they would just use a drop bar. That said I don't see a reason why that would not work, you could even use bar end shifters on the nubs to mimic shifter on the hoods.

    • @fallenshallrise
      @fallenshallrise 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's always worth it to try things. Sometimes they stay on the bike for a while, sometimes it's like 2 blocks and nope. I switched over some bar shifters from regular drop bars to some outswept bars just because they were already there and I'd say the main complaint is that in that configuration I'm often bumping the shifters on stuff and starting off with the chain on one cog and the derailleur in some other gear.

    I do like your kind of down to earth biking thing (or whatever you call it) - very practical, maybe a bit too obsessed with low end bikes. I think there is a good middle of the road well below the European superbikes but still above your approach on cycling.
    You talk a lot about the "most practical" everyday/every person bike .. but i have yet to see one of THE best everyday bikes in your videos ... the classic Dutch bike. I cannot think of a more comfortable everyday bike than the classic Dutch. Low step through and indestructible frames. Might be a European thing, but there certainly are accesoires that you neve seem to touch .. that i consider absolutely essential:
    - you never install internal gear hubs, despite them being MUCH more reliable, needing a lot less maintenance and being more than sufficient for everyday usage. Certainly much better than detrailieurs. So why no Pinion gears - even the lower end ones.
    - you never install axle dynamos it seems. Living in a very wet country .. those things beat rim dynamos any time. Along with capacitor lights .. they are much more reliable than any other light system.
    - you also never (or have you?) install disc brakes? .. I would have expected you to install disc breaks on your hiking bike with all the added weight. Objectively - they are much more reliable, are they not?
    Other than that, it seems like a nice cycling community you have there. The roads appear a bit dangerous .. with the cars driving by without physical separation .. but at least they seem to take care.
