Hah! We must have had the exact same experience. I also remember the first person view on this map. I believe they had the demo 1 disc running and this was the one playable track!
Rally games could be good comparison. Back in the day, i preferred V-Rally to sega rally, I think as a kid spending 30-40£ on a game v-rally felt like better value for money, or at least that's what the magazine's had me believe! But playing them recently, SR must feels and plays so much better.

The first wipeout had very unforgiving collision physics, you lost a lot of speed if you even lightly touched the walls.
